Here are some photos of the Hoopoe, Israel’s national bird, for Dinokkah!

Some fun facts about the Hoopoe (I can’t write a full factfile, don’t worry, that’ll come on October 28, 2021):

- Hoopoe, Upupa, and epops, three names for this bird, are named for the cry it makes!
- Hoopoes are monogamous, though the pair bond only last for a single season
- Incubating/brooding females produce a foul smelling liquid, as do the nestlings. It is rubbed into the plumage and smells like rotten meat, which deters predators.
- The birds will often fight each other, and often stab each other with their long bills. This can even blind rivals.
- Hoopoes sunbathe by spreading out their wings and tail low against the ground and tilting up their heads!
- They enjoy taking dust and sand baths

So the Hoopoe is a really cool bird, and a great one to be the national bird of Israel! Happy Chanukah!

Gosh, been a while since I’ve posted Art art here, eh? To celebrate finally having my hands on a screen which displays trustworthy colors, SOME BIRBS.

These are based on my doodles for Inktober, which themselves are based on Farid Ud-Din Attar’s Conference of the Birds, a long allegorical epic poem about birds getting over their stupid problems so they can go meet the bird king.

I might do some second passes on some of the other birds I drew (so many birds) but I’m pretty happy with these four.

Here he is, finally, in all of his feathery Hoopoe glory! I had quite a bit of fun working on him, which is why it’s surprising he took as long as he did.

Desert x Grasslander hybrid, belonging to @shikanome!

Winsor and Newton watercolors, Caran d'Ache Supracolor watercolor pencils, and gouache on Fabriano Artistico 140 lb hot press watercolor paper, 10.5 x 15 inches (26.67 x 38 cm). Lettering done using Nikko comic nib and Daler Rowney FW sepia acrylic ink.

(Apologies for the large file size being butchered by tumblr’s image constraints!)

Since I’ll have to draw a lot of Hoopoes for my Plume project I thought it might be nice if I could get a bit more confortable at drawing this bird.
After the first page of sketches done from photorefs, I had to draw myself a clear reference of the plumage pattern because it was like if this bird was WEARING HELL AS A COAT and I really needed to understand how to arrange all these stripes on opened and folded wings… =3=

Hoopoe are soooooo pretty~ ♥

One of my favorite blogs to follow is @omegafrisk. It’s a really fun story, and the mod there is so much fun! @everyone-needs-a-hoopoe is the mod, and she goes by Mel. I’m so happy that I met her because she somewhat helped me conquer my fear of talking to larger content creators. She really brings her characters to life and it’s fun being her scream friend. <3
