Rival Poker Players AU. Guys, you know what inspired this. Modern AU, but with a kind of Captain Wench flavor. Rivals to Lovers. Heavily influenced by the 1994 movie Maverick, but you don’t need to know anything about the movie or really very much about poker to hang with this.
Rating: T for this chapter (mostly due to language), but M for the next part and I’m not chickening out this time
Summary: Emma Swan, poker hustler with more than just card tricks up her sleeve, meets Killian Jones, a fellow gambler, at a shady little casino down south. After a memorable first encounter, they seem to keep finding each other, but are they really ready to gamble with their hearts? Emma just doesn’t know if she can deal with it.
Emma hates this place. Over her years of hustling poker, she’s become accustomed to the bleeps, dings and 8-bit digital “music” (sarcastic quotation marks very much intended) that make up the constant, mind-numbing background noise in a casino. She can handle the smell of stale cigarette smoke and human bodies that could use a break from gambling to, you know, actually shower or something. Even the watered down cocktails don’t bother her. Hell, those are probably a blessing in disguise - keeps her mind sharp without her having to order something non-alcoholic which might tip off her marks.
But this piddly-dink river casino hotel on the outskirts of Nowheresville, Louisiana? Really bringing her down. Maybe it’s the general air of despair and decay. Maybe it’s the humidity. She’s already regretting not putting her hair up. It’s starting to do that weird wavy thing it does sometimes, a few tendrils sticking to her neck. Not to mention her skinny jeans - great for attracting a mark, but not exactly comfort wear - are clinging unpleasantly to her legs, making her want to squirm. Or maybe she’s just still pissed that she nearly broke the heel off of her favorite pair of fuck-me pumps on a ripped spot in the tacky patterned carpet. It’s all just so irritating and depressing.
She could’ve gone someplace nicer, true. Then she’d be spending too much of the money she’s trying to win off these poor bastards to pay for her lodgings. Or she could sleep in her car. Again. On this wet, drizzling mess of a night. Yeah, no. Fuck that.
That’s right. This is a serial webtoon. Does it need something to end the episode? That’s right! Something should happen to the lead character. An incident which can be the ending scene. An incident. What kind of incident though?

Basically what's happened to Once Upon a Time: (Probably gonna get some hate for this)
*Swan Queen sexual tension through whole series*
*Swan Queen becomes a popular ship*
Swan Queen... "She's not dying"
*Emma saves Regina from the Wraith, sacrificing herself*
"Shit!! we need a distraction! Quick throw Emma through that portal for no apparent reason. Hold up, throw Snow through too. We'll force some bonding, to distract them from how Emma put her life on the line for Regina: )"
*Swan Queen is still popular*
"Something should be done, but what? Brilliant idea time!! We'll bring Hook in and have him flirt with Emma and take some tension off Swan Queen"
"We'll show Emma's Baby Daddy. It'll take some tension of Swan Queen."
"We'll make Emma and Regina fight, it'll help this whole Swan Queen situation"
"This is getting out of hand. Brilliant idea time!!! We'll make Emma's Baby Daddy Rumple's son and bring him back to Storybrooke. It'll take some tension off Swan Queen. This is so gonna work this time:)"
"We're going to have to do something about this, you just wait till next season, we'll sort this out"
Season 3 (A)
*Swan Queen is still the most popular ship*
"We'll bring Tinkerbell in to show Regina her true love"
yeah, okay, you just carry on there.
"There he is Regina, your true love"
*yawns & files nails*
"The man with the lion tattoo is your true love"
Emma has a lion (lyon) tattoo, you complete and utter idiots. Lol armatures
"This thing with Regina's true love is going to work this time, we know it will, it has to"
*completely doesn't work*
*sing song voice* Swan Queeeeeeeeen
"Quick we need a new distraction!! Emma go kiss Hook for no apparent reason.
can u not
"This is gonna work. We can feel it"
"We'll make Neal and Hook fight over Emma, that will take the spotlight off
*sighs* oh for god sake. This is getting beyond a joke -__-
3x11 - "Regina! Regina!!!" "Emma?"
aww look at Emma being all concerned for Regina. *coughs* Swan Queen
"Hook get over there and say something to Emma that is pointless and slightly creepy"
ha ha you tried Hook, it's okay. You did your best *tries to keep a straight face*
"My gift to you is good memories. You'll have the life you've always wanted"
IT'S LOVE!! SWANQUEEN BITCH!!
"Shit!! What have we done?!? It's not Swan Queen we swear!!
whatever, looked a lot like Swan Queen to me. Did you see their faces?!? Unintentional my arse!!
"ffs, separate Regina and Emma now!!"
*Hook kisses Emma at her door* (more like sexual harassment but let's not go there)
lol Hook. You tried and failed yet again (haha)
Season 3 (B)
"We've got it this time! Bring Robin Hood in and have him flirt with Regina, he's only known her 5 minutes but that doesn't matter!! Flirt now!!! Also we'll give Emma yet another forced love interest. We'll make him a flying monkey though so that Captain Swan makes slightly more sense"
what has this show even come to? Just give us Swan Queen and be done with it!!
"Brilliant idea time again!! Have Emma mention Neal and make Hook look sad, it will gain sympathy for Hook!! This is gonna work!! This time!! THIS TIME!!
*Regina and Emma have a fake/staged fight*
look at our babies!! Faking fights and working together!! Swan Queen has entered the building. Deal with it bitch.
"Shit!! Cut to Fairytale Land. Robin get over there and stalk Regina"
*Emma and Regina in the Mayors office* *romantic zoom on Regina's face after Emma says she trusts her*
SWANQUEEN OMG IT'S LOVE!! LOVE BITCH!! VIVA LA SWANQUEEN!!
"Fuck fuck fuck!! Cut to Outlaw Queen and make Robin Hood feebly flirt with Regina!! Robin do it now!! Distract them from the fact that Regina is completely in love with Emma"
okay, you just carry on, we'll just play along and pretend we're interested -____-
*Emma and Regina on a stake out*
Hell yea!! Regina and Emma in the looooovvveee bug!! Swan Queen is back in business.
"Shit!! Distraction time!! Tell them that The Wicked Witch is Regina's half sister now!!"
completely didn't see that one coming, especially with all the mentions of blood magic and all. Mind blown!! Completely unexpected. Just get back to Swan Queen now please.
*intense Swan-Mills family feels*
AWW Emma, Regina and Henry are reunited! The perfect little family!!
"Charming, Hook, get in there, break the Swan Queen tension!!"
And okay before I actually get off, let me talk some more about something I loved: the all-kinds-of-awkward (in all the best ways) Hook/Belle brotp. It takes Emma a single “okay hubby” glance for Hook to know exactly what she wants. Emma informs Belle that Hook will protect her, Hook is like WAIT I WILL??…. oh yes… er…. wifey said so so…. eehehehe…. that was one time… okay twice… BUT WE’RE FRANS NOW RIGHT???? /look at me how charming i am i’m really charming like charming who’s my mate crap she isn’t buying this dammit
I loved that he announced he was good at research (we DO know he’s a reader and has a huge vocabulary). I loved that Belle informed him to be careful with her books and he was all, well I do have a hook. I loved that when there was something that might actually be a threat, he wasted no time drawing his sword and running at her side to protect her, no second thoughts, no snark, just ready to do his job. I loved that the entire scene was included for the sole purpose of showing how much he has changed. I loved that he, Mr. I-Never-Apologize, said “sorry” within two seconds of a glance from Emma instructing him he was doing so.
hi! so i love your fics and you probs get asked this a lot but i thought i'd ask you for some fic recs since you also seem to read a lot and know of the underrated ones. if that's cool :D.. i'm looking for stuff from the old cs fics, if you read a lot of those? cause i'm interested to read the fics from the early days of cs and idk where to start. I've read SSTTR, Path that Moonbeams Make, The Daring and The Devious and love them all. Heaven Disturbed,I'm reading next. Any others you can rec? :D
Dude, I never pass up on a chance to go digging back through early days fic. I love you for giving me the excuse, I went a little wild with it to be honest. I actually had to make myself stop at things first published a year ago, AKA around when ‘In The Name of the Brother’ aired, because the list was getting too long. (Except I did also throw a couple of my faves in just because.)
I’ll divvy by oneshots/shorts and longer fic. Shorter comes first:
Important Information - There is an information sheet in Granny’s diner where people post important information; it’s hijacked by some personal conversations. This is really funny, and short so no reason not to read.
A Worthy Gamble - Emma makes a deal with Hook to learn about his knowledge of Regina’s plans. I’m unreasonably fond of this little oneshot for some reason.
Longer plottier ones are below. Since a rather high proportion of these haven’t been updated any time recently, I’m going to put a bold star (✮) next to all the ones that haven’t been updated in more than three months. Two stars for ones that haven’t been updated in over six months, just so you know what you’re getting into.
At A Disadvantage - Set after arriving back in Storybrooke, I’m not even sure how to describe it… There’s conflicts and alliances and battles, Emma, Hook, Cora, Rumple, Neal, some world-jumping, flying monkeys - it’s super awesome, okay. ✮✮
Bested Thrice - Emma resorts to using her feminine wiles to beat Hook in their fight by the lake; things sort of spiral from there. ✮
Straight On Til Morning - There’s an extra spell on the bracer Hook gives Emma. This one’s fantastic, you should definitely check it out.
Fortune Favors The Brave - EF AU where Emma is Robin Hood. She starts off stealing from Hook, but ends up working with him before too long. ✮✮
The End Has Just Begun - Killian Jones is Emma’s boyfriend at the beginning of the series. Suuuuuuper awesome, just read it.
The Secret of Drowning - When Hook catches Aurora’s heart at the lake, he overbalances and falls through the portal… taking Emma with him. One of my all-time favorites. ✮
God Only Knows - When Emma falls through the portal after the wraith, Snow doesn’t follow in time. Emma ends up alone in the EF, where she soon meets Hook. Another absolute favorite.
Backlash - Emma is cursed, and Hook visits her in the hospital. This fic is actually an exception to a general rule of mine about a certain trope in this fandom. ✮✮
Screw Destiny - Emma finds out Hook is her True Love when she TLKs him out of a curse. She’s not exactly happy about this. (I don’t usually like those but this is a pretty good exception.)
Forget Me Not - Hook follows Emma after she leaves him on the beanstalk. Through a series of events, they end up in Neverland together.
Beautiful Tragic Love Affair - Emma goes back for Hook on the beanstalk, a choice which changes everything. To be completely honest I don’t remember too much about this one, guess I’ll have to reread it. But I’m pretty sure I remember liking it a lot, so.
I'm just not feeling Zelena after her stupid comment at seeing Hook again. I was like shut up Zelena. He has more then earned his right to be there and part of the group since s2 / 3. It's odd seeing her in the group. But a better character then RH
Here’s my question with Zelena.
In the sneak peek one, Regina says she wants to rip Hook’s throat out.
Why not her lovely sister who is the one who gave Hades everything he needed, including her trust, her sister’s trust and the baby, that set up Robin’s death?
Oh, yeah, she wants to kill Hook because that would hurt Emma. Her best friend.
I would really like to see what it would be like if Emma and Hook were already dating when Emma found Neal in NY with Gold and Henry and maybe Neal's reaction when they get back to Storybrooke?
OK. So to do this, I had to change a lot of the story. So, I guess imagine that they spent a little more time in Storybrooke before going to NY. Also, let’s say Hook didn’t shoot Belle or kidnap Archie or any of that jazz, because then a relationship between him and Emma would be harder to write. He also didn’t follow them to New York or try to kill Rumple. May get confusing, because that’s basically his whole season 2 plot, but whatever.
It was surreal. When she signed up for this road trip, given she owed Gold a favor, she imagined she would just find his son, reunite long lost father and son, and then head back home. But no, that would be too easy for her. She thought her life was complicated before she came to Storybrooke.
It was Neal. Of course it was. The one man she hoped to never see again, that she lied about to Henry, was the one person she came to New York to find. It was so typical that fate would kick her in the ass like this. Of all the people for her to fall in love with too young, get pregnant, and then abandoned in jail, was Rumplestiltskin’s son.
And now, here she was, confused as all hell, on a plane heading back to Maine. She sat next to Gold, while Henry and Neal sat on the other side of the isle, catching up. Neither of the boys wanted to sit with their parent. Henry was furious with her, so angry that she lied about his father. She thought she wasprotecting him, but perhaps she was only protecting himself.
Soon enough they were driving back into Storybrooke, and the car stayed silent the whole time. It was awkward, and all she wanted right now was her bed. They made their way to Granny’s, so Neal could pay for a room, and her parents said they would be there, too.
“So, how was the trip?” Mary Margaret after hugging Emma when she entered the diner. Emma grinned and walked past her to sit at the bar. “I need a drink.”
Henry sat with David at the booth, as they went through the storybook, again. Now that he knew his father was Baelfire, Henry chose to reread all of his stories in the book. Neal came from the inn and sat next to him, telling him more tales about his time in the Enchanted Forest, and how he got to the world.
She was happy that Henry was happy, for sure. And a part of her was proud that Neal, despite what he did to her in the past, was willing to pick up being a father so willingly. She had to give him credit for that.
Summary: In order to prevent Hook from going after Gold’s dagger, Cora turns Hook into a child. An adorable little three-year-old child. What’s Emma to do? (Set in S2, after Hook leaves the hospital but before Emma goes to New York.)
“Mother?” Regina asks warily, still not quite sure what to make of the admittedly adorable little three-year-old who is clinging onto her pant leg for dear life.
“What?” Cora replies. “You said you wanted children and he was getting annoying.”
“But…I have a child. Henry. And this isn’t a child. This is Hook.”
The little boy in question raises his head at the name, but there doesn’t seem to be any real recognition in his wide blue eyes. Only fear.
Cora huffs, and rolls her eyes at her daughter. “Technically…”
Regina shakes her head, causing the little boy’s thumb to disengage from his mouth. He wraps his wet, chubby hand around her even tighter and does his best to hide from the older woman. Regina absolutely does not feel the slightest bit of tenderness for him in the gesture. “Fine. He’s a child. But what are we going to do with him? I’m not watching him.”
“Toss him out on the street then, what are you worried about?” Cora waves her hand impatiently.
Regina might be a lot of things, but when it comes to children, ever since Henry, she’s not completely heartless. But Hook can’t stay here, not with Cora. Not with the way he’s already wiggling his way into her heart. No.
He needs someone who can look after him and keep him out of the way. Someone who likes children underfoot. Someone like…
She sighs and turns to her mother. “I’m taking him to the Sheriff’s station. They can deal with him there.”
“If you must,” Cora replies.
Hook whimpers a little at the sharpness of the women’s voices, but Regina can’t afford to drop the cold act until she has him away from her mother. Grabbing the hand that isn’t in his mouth, she marches him to the door. Cora doesn’t even bother to look up from the papers she is studying, and Regina once more ignores the bad taste she has in her mouth whenever she spends time with her mother.
As they walk down the street, Regina softens a little, even swinging the boy’s hand in hers and talking to him about the weather. What else can she say? Clearly, he doesn’t have any of Hook’s old memories and it’s not like she wants to get to know the kid. Still, he’s a little lost child, not the infamous pirate captain and she can hardly fault him for his sins when he can’t even tie his shoes yet.
“Are you my mam?” Is the first thing he says to her.
She nears chokes on her own spit. “No!” She says far too hastily, and besides her the boy flinches. In an attempt to soften the blow, she adds, “I’m not your mother. She’s…not here. But I’m taking you to some very nice people who will look after you. Okay?”
He tilts his stormy blue eyes up at her and frowns. For a brief moment, she almost just forgets the whole thing and takes him back home. Henry would want a brother, right? Then she remembers exactly why that is such a bad idea. Her mother is there.
Henry is strong. He’s smart and talented. With Cora’s tutelage, he would make a fine king to rule this land someday. But this… mini-Hook, he’s just a frightened little boy. And Cora would eat him alive. No. This is best.
Besides, it’s still Hook. And she just can’t.
