Tuskegee Airmen Monument, Low Country Regional Airport (formerly Walterboro Army Airfield), Walterboro, SC.
Though named for their origins at Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute, the pilots of the famed 332nd Fighter Group actually completed final training at Walterboro Army Airfield. Over 500 African-American pilots faced discrimination and segregation while stationed here between April 1944 and October 1945.
If you’ve been here a while, you know I love Star Wars - especially this guy. So when I saw this, I was thrilled: artist Arturo Delgado (and member of the cosplay organization 501st Legion) made this Dieselpunk Stormtrooper helmet in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen. I’m honestly not sure if it gets cooler than this.
