Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen have been style icons for years, so here at Sephora, we couldn’t be more excited to be the exclusive retailer of their new scent—make that scents. The sisters became so enthralled with fragrance that they created two perfumes, both for women, Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Elizabeth and James Nirvana White. Meant to be worn alone or layered together, the two blends embody the same sense of duality inherent in their partnership and approach to designing Elizabeth and James. The Sephora Glossy caught up with Ashley and Mary-Kate to learn more. HOLLY SIEGEL

The traditional definition of Nirvana is a state free of care, pain, and external reality. What’s your personal definition of Nirvana?
MARY-KATE OLSEN: Fragrance is incredibly personal and intimate. We began this process thinking about those special, intimate moments that make everything else in our lives more exciting—nirvana moments. Everyone wants to experience nirvana and as modern women, we all define it differently.

Why did you decide to create two fragrances? Are they designed to be worn together?
ASHLEY OLSEN: We thought about the modern woman and what she wants in life. She wants it all: independence, career, love, great friends, etc. We created two fragrances to give her options and to reflect Elizabeth and James’s signature duality—striking a balance between masculine and feminine, sexy and sophisticated. Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black is dark and rich with notes of sandalwood, vanilla, and violet. Elizabeth and James Nirvana White is a lighter blend of peony, musk, and muguet. We didn’t create Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Elizabeth and James Nirvana White with layering in mind, but they’re actually quite beautiful together.

Why did you decide to launch these fragrances at Sephora?
MKO:
Elizabeth and James apparel, handbags, eyewear, and jewelry are for the fun, modern customer. Ashley and I wanted to partner with a retailer who understands and speaks to our girl. Sephora is amazing at connecting with their client and creating an environment that encourages her to explore and find new ways to express herself. It was a natural fit to launch Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Elizabeth and James Nirvana White exclusively with Sephora.

Are designing apparel and accessories at all like designing a fragrance? Do you now find yourself wanting to create an entire fragrance wardrobe?
MKO: We’re already thinking about ways we can expand our Elizabeth and James fragrance world but for now, we’re excited about this launch. It’s been an amazing two-year process and we’re so excited to finally share Elizabeth and James Nirvana with Sephora clients.

You don’t always want to get your hair wet. Perhaps it’s freezing outside, or you’ve got no time, or your gym has the worst shampoo ever (try our minis!), or your arm is sore from blow-drying yesterday. No need to make excuses—here are seven ways to freshen up your look, no towel-turban required. HOLLY SIEGEL

1. DE-FRIZZ AND ADD SHINE WITH AGAVE HEALING OIL TREATMENT
Second-day strands can get frizzy and lackluster, especially when you’re already prone to dryness. Condition and smooth thirsty ends with a dab of this lightweight plant-based oil.

2. ADD VOLUME WITH BUMBLE AND BUMBLE THICKENING DRYSPUN FINISH
Yesterday your look may have been va-va-voom, but today it’s a little deflated. Spray on a root pick-me-up and all-over fullness with this silky formula.

3. REFRESH CURLS WITH DEVACURL MIST-ER RIGHT
Somehow scents like smog, smoke, and food seem to get just a bit more tangled up in curls. Deposit a dose of lavender fragrance while bringing them back to buoyant.

4. SOAK UP OIL WITH DRYBAR DETOX DRY SHAMPOO
Got a perfect blowout and want to keep it going? The micro powder in this product absorbs oil, sans residue, while extending the life of your style in one fine mist.

5. ADD TEXTURE WITH LIVING PROOF AMP2 INSTANT TEXTURE VOLUMIZER
Great for short styles, a dime-sized amount of this silicone- and oil-free formula gives hair shape for 48 hours. Yes—that means third-day hair.

6. HOLD IT TOGETHER WITH LIVING PROOF FLEX SHAPING HAIRSPRAY
This ultra-touchable spray gives hair some hold without weighing it down. Perfect when you want to change up your look without adding build-up.

7. MULTITASK WITH BUMBLE AND BUMBLE PRÊT-À-POWDER
This three-in-one translucent powder grants extra grip to undone buns, braids, and ponytails. Read more about it HERE ▸

When Tarte founder Maureen Kelly created the first Cheek Stain in her one-bedroom apartment in 1999, so began a love affair between women everywhere and the fastest-ever way to flush. “When the Cheek Stains launched, they were so different from any blush on the market. The gel formula in a chubby push-up stick was revolutionary,” says Kelly. “I personally love them most for being so easy-to-use and lasting for a minimum of 12 hours. Tartelettes also love that they are chock-full of healthy super fruits like maracuja, acai, and acerola making them a healthy treat for your skin.”

So there may have been a few panic attacks when the Cheek Stains recently went out of stock to make way for a new, updated version: “It’s the same great formula and amount, but in a more convenient, eco-friendly push-up stick,” explains Kelly. “We also decided that the most iconic product in our line could use a makeover—it’s been fifteen years!”

Each shade, which now matches up to a shade of LipSurgence Power Pigments of the same name, now has a different bold pattern on the packaging. “Each one is like a collector’s item! And you never have to guess which lip color looks great with which blush.” HOLLY SIEGEL

It’s an exciting time over in the skincare department at Sephora. From beauty oils to peels, we’ve tried so many new products that strangers are complimenting our skin (true story). Our latest obsession? Essences. We caught up with Jamie Anderson, Senior Brand Strategist, to learn more. HOLLY SIEGEL

THE GIST
“Essences are the ‘frosting on top’ that you would include as the step after cleansing—the first step in your moisturizing routine,” explains Anderson. “They easily absorb into the skin, and add a softness you will feel immediately.”

THE BENEFITS
“The hydration from most essences is very long-lasting. Skin is plumped and softened all day. I’ve never gotten more compliments on my skin than when I’ve included this step in my beauty routine. They’re easy: you don’t need to stand around waiting for them to dry. Plus, most have great scents!”

HOW TO PICK AN ESSENCE
“Unlike other skincare categories, essences work for anybody. It’s a great way to hydrate and moisturize your skin without a fear of clogging pores. They all offer a base benefit of cushiony softness, but from product to product the long-term benefits range. I suggest using Skincare IQ combined with the expertise of a cast member in one of our stores.”

THE EDIT
Below, some favorites:

FRESH BLACK TEA AGE-DELAY INSTANT INFUSION
“The black tea has a calming effect, so it infuses your skin with antioxidants. If you like Fresh’s Black Tea Mask, here’s a way to incorporate those benefits in your daily routine.”

LANCÔME ÉNERGIE DE VIE
“This energizing tonic provides hydration while revving up the skin’s radiance and glow.”

FIRST AID BEAUTY ULTRA REPAIR LIQUID RECOVERY
“Great for sensitive skin. The liquid oil-free formula is great hydration for oily skin types, or as an extra layer of hydration under a moisturizer for the driest of skin.”

Like fruit, haircuts, and boyfriends, beauty products have expiration dates—but there’s no easy way to find out what they are. “The risk of using old products is, first and foremost, bacteria,” says Sephora PRO Erik Soto. “If you’re acne-prone, they will cause breakouts.” And of course, the secondary risk is having makeup that goes on wonky and skincare that plain doesn’t work (a big risk, when you consider SPF is one of the most expiration-prone products). We picked Soto’s brain for the best ways to know whether to give your goods the kiss off. HOLLY SIEGEL

DO A SMELL TEST
“When you first get the product, see what it smells like, because you want to be sure it maintains that same consistency,” says Soto. “Check it at 30, 60, and 90 days to see if it’s changed. If any skincare or product has a sour or waxy smell, it’s an indicator that it may be going bad. I’d toss it and get a new one.”

CHECK YOUR BEAUTY BAG
“I’ve seen people take a label maker to their makeup!” says Soto. A less sticky option? Check “My Beauty Bag” on Sephora.com—you’ll be able to see when you purchased things to know how long they’ve been sitting pretty.

WATCH FOR HIGH-RISK MAKEUP:
MASCARA

“Mascara lasts only about six weeks from when it was opened,” says Soto, adding that resisting the urge to pump your wand is a good idea (the extra air also causes the product to dry out faster). “If you feel bad throwing it away, use it for another purpose: in your brows for texture or to touch up your roots if you have dark hair.”

FOUNDATION
“If it comes out of the tube separated, it’s been sitting too long in one place. You want to shake it up, because foundations do separate naturally—but if you know it’s more than six months old or smells funny, toss it.”

LIPSTICK AND LIP GLOSS
“Lip gloss is susceptible to bacteria because it’s gooey. It’s easy to tell when a lipstick is going bad because it starts to smell really waxy.”

OTHER LIQUIDS
The more water content a product has, the more chance the formula has to be compromised or worse, germy. “Liquid eyeliners and cream blushes can get old,” says Soto, adding, “if your compact has a sponge in it, make sure the sponge is completely dry before you put it back in the compact.”

…AND DON’T SHARE
Mom was right. “Don’t share makeup!” says Soto. “Especially mascara. That’s why we makeup artists use disposable mascara wands and other tools like brushes to apply mascara!”

CAMEO: MARC JACOBS X SOFIA COPPOLA TALK DAISY DREAM

The designer and director duo got together in NYC for the launch of the new fragrance Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream.

A huge group of international press convened on New York City’s West Side last month to fête the launch of Marc Jacobs’s new scent, Daisy Dream. The charming, romantic take on the original Daisy perfume is floral and fruity, spiked with notes of blackberry, jasmine, musk, and coconut water (which also is an ingredient in some Marc Jacobs Beauty products). Behind a giant indoor MJ-shaped hedge, Jacobs and his close friend, the filmmaker Sofia Coppola—who directed the TV commercial for the Daisy Dream campaign—discussed all things Daisy. Read on for an excerpt. HOLLY SIEGEL

ON THE DAISY GIRL
MARC JACOBS: I think it’s a characteristic that exists in a lot of people, maybe in Sofia. A lot of Sofia’s work and the way she portrays women—there’s a bit of strength, vulnerability, and virility—is in line with the Daisy girl. There’s that Daisy quality, although there’s the dark side perhaps.

ON THE COLLABORATION
SOFIA COPPOLA: I was really happy when Marc said they wanted to create some short film commercials for Daisy Dream. It was great because I had complete freedom to make something pretty that I hoped captured the feeling that Marc wanted to portray. So for me, it was a great pleasure to create something beautiful that I hoped Marc would like. I think because we have similar tastes, it was easy for me … I felt that we like the same kinds of things.

ON THE COMMERCIAL
SC: I guess because it was Daisy Dream, we wanted it to feel dreamy. Fragrance is so abstract so how you convey it—you know the feeling that you want or the girl—it matters. I do like to think of things as a memory, or an impression.

ON DREAMING IN SCENT
MJ: I think that sense, that olfactory sense, does take you somewhere. I mean you always go back to a memory. I think certain things evoke certain places you’ve been … a certain feeling you get. We always talked about this when we were making the fragrance: Does it have this kind of freshness, does it have a sparkle, is there a lightness to it? With Daisy Dream, we wanted to create something that was more ethereal, a sophisticated version of this Daisy girl that we first started making.

“I do up to ten smoky eyes a day!” says Lawrence Lim, a senior artist at Sephora Powell Street in San Francisco, who created the look shown here. His first step? “I explain that it’s called a smoky eye because of what actual smoke from a fire looks like: it’s darker at the base and lightly transitions up. And a lot of the time, clients get confused and think it’s just liner on the top and liner on the bottom, and it just looks…dark.” Follow the steps below to your desired intensity for a classic smoky eye—and if it continues to elude you, sign up for one of our Day-To-Night Smoky Eye classes, free for Beauty Insiders. HOLLY SIEGEL

STEP ONE
Prep lids with primer all the way up to the brow. “If the client is on the oily side, I like Too Faced Shadow Insurance eye primer because it is humidity-resistant,” says Lim. “The Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion is another favorite.”

STEP TWO
Apply a neutral tone that complements your eye color across your lids, avoiding the very center to create a highlight. For our model Tara, Lim used an orange-tinged shade to work with her blue eyes, adding that browner shades work for other eye colors.

STEP THREE
Add a gray shadow to the crease with a brush that isn’t flat to avoid harsh lines. Lim likes SEPHORA COLLECTION Pro Crease Brush #10.

STEP FOUR
With a darker color, shade the outer two-thirds of the lid, concentrating the color underneath the crease.

STEP FIVE
Add depth to the upper lash line by drawing small strokes with the side of the pencil tip, lightly blending upwards. “It’s going to look messy at first,” warns Lim. “Blend it out before it sets with a small flat shadow brush.” Go over this line with black shadow and blend more.

STEP SIX
Highlight the center of the lid, inner tear duct, and undereye area with a light and/or metallic shade. Follow with concealer. “I like using it after I do the eye, so I can fix any mistakes first,” explains Lim. Yes, even a master makes mistakes!

Picture it, year 2000: you got your first cell phone. You love boy bands. And your hair is painstakingly blown-out and flat-ironed to submission. Bumble and bumble was there to help prolong that look with their original Hair Powder, an oil-absorbing volumizer. “Dry shampoo had been around for quite a long time. When we launched our original Hair Powders, hair stylist Laurent Philippon was inspired by the traditional French hair powders. Back then, dry shampoos were a bottom-shelf item at drugstores and were nothing like what our stylists were looking for,” explains Tim Rush, Bumble and bumble’s Vice President of Global Communications and Fashion Relations. Here, how the haircare brand that started as a salon got to their latest and greatest hair powder launch, Prêt-à-Powder—available today. HOLLY SIEGEL

2000: Original Hair Powder
Available in four shades—white, red, brown, and black—this formula came in a plastic bottle that let you tap it directly onto roots (hence the shades) or in a poof of powder for dry-cleansing, grit, grip, and volume. “Exactly what you need if you want to create an updo or even a braid or ponytail,” adds Rush.

2006: Original Hair Powder in A Bit of Blondish
The brand heard the cries of the highlighted masses and created a fifth shade of original Hair Powder, A Bit of Blondish.

2006: Aerosol Hair Powders
“Turning our Hair Powder into an aerosol spray allowed for easier—and cleaner—use. And we’ve just launched our latest formulas, which include a little less pigment for more buildable, even, effortless application.”

2014: Prêt-à-Powder
“Prêt-à-Powder is equal parts dry shampoo, style extender, and volume in a pinch. It’s translucent, so provides an alternative for people who don’t want added color. We found that loose powders perform best for oil absorption, so we chose that format to create a perfect balance of all three benefits. It also uses our latest technology to create an incredibly finely milled formula that is nearly invisible in the hair. It’s great when you want to skip a shampoo to sleep in an extra few minutes.” He said it, not us.

This month, Josie Maran adds another argan-based wonder product to her lineup: Argan Milk, an intensive hydrating treatment that plumps skin and gives it a fresh, radiant look. We caught up with Maran to hear the details. MELISSA LANE & HOLLY SIEGEL

THE STAR PERFORMER
“Argan oil is my first love, so I’m always asking myself what’s possible when it comes to this amazing ingredient,” says Maran. “I think it has a lot more to offer the beauty world!”

THE INSPIRATION
“I was inspired by my own experience as a mom giving my daughters the most perfect food for their little growing bodies. I thought, what if I could make the perfect food for the skin? I worked with our chemists to create Pure Argan Milk, and the planets aligned! Turns out that what your skin really needs is similar to what is in actual milk, which is oil and water. And when we created the product, it had this gorgeous, white, milky texture. The name was meant to be!”

THE BREAKTHROUGH
“I love the analogy of prunes and plums. Your skin cells should look like plums, but throughout your life they start to lose water, and turn into prunes. You need water to plump them back up, and oil to prevent them from shriveling up again. Milk brings the two ingredients together, so your skin cells are plumped and happy even in the deep-down layers of your skin.”

THE USAGE
“Argan Milk is a serum meant to be used under Argan Oil or Argan Oil Light, which seals in that deep down moisture, preventing water loss. I use three to five drops right after I cleanse my skin every morning or night, before my oil.”

THE BENEFITS
“Pure Argan Milk is safe for all skin types, but my customers with really dry or sensitive skin types—those with eczema or psoriasis—are going to especially love it. Since it plumps up skin, it’s my new secret for aging beautifully.”

Consider yourself lucky if you haven’t been snowed in, frozen out, or sleeping in airports over the past month. The Polar Vortex has the majority of the country out cold—and from what we hear, has left their skin parched and chapped. Below, some food for thaw. HOLLY SIEGEL

THE DREAM CREAM
Caudalie Premier Cru la Crème Riche features the same active ingredients as the brand’s popular Premier Cru la Crème, with the addition of three deeply nourishing plant waxes: jojoba, mimosa, and sunflower. The buttery texture will soften your winter skin for up to 24 hours while providing benefits for fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and dullness. Plus, a little goes a long way, and the scent—derived from rose petals infused in an oak barrel—will give you a taste of springtime.

THE OVERNIGHT DELIGHT
Boscia Tsubaki Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask softens while you slumber. Using a blend of tsubaki (camellia) oil, rice bran oil, wakame (Japanese sea kelp), and the protein-rich amino acid serine, it seals in moisture while protecting against free radicals and reducing visible redness. Go ahead: hydrate while you hibernate.

THE BRIGHT EYE
GLAMGLOW BRIGHTMUD Eye Treatment is a tap-on, wipe-off eye mask that hydrates the eye area and helps absorb toxins—perfect after a late night at the airport or just to get rid of that bleary-eyed cold-weather look.

THE SOFTENING SERUM
During this time of year, those with oily or blemish-prone skin often have trouble finding a product to hydrate dry-winter skin without breaking them out. And ignoring the problem can actually lead to more oil production. Kate Somerville Quench Oil Free Hydrating Face Serum delivers antiaging and moisturizing benefits without clogging pores.

THE LIP LOCK
Dry lips are one of the most chronic winter-skin problems. Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment keeps them soft for up to 24 hours thanks to the natural humectants in sugar and other key ingredients such as vitamins C and E. You’ll be lip gloss-ready in no time.

Tory Burch, known for her wearable but chic clothing and accessories, has just debuted her first fragrance—but clearly, has always harbored a passion for perfume. “I remember playing with my mother’s perfume bottles when I was young, spraying on many different scents at the same time and then being thrown into a bath,” she says. Luckily, the opportunity to create her own presented itself, and she no longer has to improvise. Below, Burch takes us through some of the key elements of her first fragrance. HOLLY SIEGEL

THE INSPIRATION
“I find inspiration in many different places, but my parents have been the greatest source of inspiration for our fragrance,” says Burch. “It is anchored by vetiver, my father’s signature scent, which we balanced with floral and citrus notes. The bottle was inspired by my mother. She had an incredible tray filled with vintage atomizers when I was growing up, and we wanted something that would look beautiful on top of a vanity.”

THE BOTTLE
“I have always been inspired by my parents,” she says. “Fretwork was very much a part of [my parents’] design sensibility. It was a part of their vernacular, and now it’s become a signature of the brand, and the perfect accent for the fragrance.”

THE NOTES
Citrus and fruit notes such as crisp grapefruit, mandarin, sweet bergamot, neroli, and cassis provide brightness and reflect Burch’s optimistic spirit, while florals such as pink peony add femininity and cedar and sandalwood ground the scent.

THE FASHION TIE-IN
“It’s similar to the clothes and accessories we design—sophisticated but down-to-earth, combining disparate ideas you don’t usually see together. The fragrance is the same way. There’s a brightness to the scent when you first smell it, and then you realize that it’s more complex.”

A handwritten note from Marc Jacobs made its way to the Kendo offices at Sephora HQ a couple of weeks ago, previewing the muted, dreamy color palette at the designer’s Fall 2014 runway show. The request? As many shades of his Enamored Nail Lacquer as possible to match the included swatches—an admittedly tall order. “[Marc] had a vision of the nails tonally matching the girls’ clothes,” explains Sylvie Rouaix, VP, Marketing and Product Development for Kendo. “And of course, his love of shine never wavers!” In the end, the total look was a study in color: models’ hair was tinted to muted beiges, makeup included touches of brown and grey, and the nails, of course, included five neutral shade variations you’ll be able to get your hands on this Fall, only at Sephora. Much of the A-list has hair genius Chris McMillan on speed-dial, and for good reason: the industry vet knows how to weather any storm—literally. “There was 65% humidity today in Los Angeles,” he whispered into the phone just as the lights were coming up on Hollywood’s biggest show. “I’ve been watching the news since 5:30 this morning—are the tents up? Are they down? I was freaking out!” His Best Supporting Products for the night? “Living Proof Prime and Satin saved my life! They just repel moisture.” Here, some other tips from McMillan on ensuring any big day is a Perfect Hair Day. HOLLY SIEGEL

#1 Start with fresh, clean hair.
“Most of my celebrity clients greet me at the door with a towel on their head,” says McMillan. “They’re often making scrambled eggs or going about their day!”

#2 Take your time.
Whether it’s because your arms are getting tired or because your stylist wants to get you into your dress as quickly as possible, resist the urge to rush. “Make sure the style is perfect. In fact, if you’re going to an event, always make your hair a little bigger at first because inevitably, it will settle into itself. Make your curls extra tight and your blowout extra big. And don’t touch your hair too much!”

# 3 Be prepared.
“I make sure my kit is organized beforehand. If my client is blonde, I make sure I have blonde hairpins. Since it was raining, I had Living Proof Prime Style Extender in there.”

#4 Build a look to last.
“My clients’ hair is going to look great when she leaves me, but I need to know that it’s going to hold up all night. Tonight, I used Prime on wet hair and blew it out with a round brush, then used Satin on the ends, then set the look with [Living Proof] Flex hairspray.”

#5 If all else fails…
The remedy for a style that seems to be going south? “Brush it out and start over as best you can. A low ponytail or bun is a good standby!”

For the Fall 2014 Opening Ceremony fashion show, the makeup look was created by our own Artistry Ambassador Aaron de Mey using the Sephora+Pantone Universe Color of the Year collection, starring the versatile and feminine Radiant Orchid (and a chocolate wall—really). The Sephora Glossy caught up with Opening Ceremony’s visionary founders, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, to hear how they got inspired by the shade. HOLLY SIEGEL

What do you find inspiring about Radiant Orchid?
HUMBERTO LEON & CAROL LIM: We love that while it is bold, there is an effortlessness to wearing it. The rich, saturated color makes you feel vibrant.

You used Radiant Orchid not only in beauty, but also in your fashion collection. Tell us about how they complement each other.
CL: It was natural for us to “think” in this color and incorporate it into our collection, as it translates well into the color palette. Radiant Orchid looks and feels very rich in the fabrics and techniques we used to bring our clothing to life.

How was it collaborating with Sephora’s Artistry Ambassador Aaron de Mey?
HL: We love collaborating with Aaron, he is both a visionary and an inspirational partner. Aaron is able to interpret the mood we want to create into polished, exciting looks and always exceeds our expectations!

How did you strike a balance of the color on different features—eyes, cheeks, lips, nails?
CL: We always look at the entire picture and see where we want the focus to be. From there, we work with the other features to enhance that focus. For our show, Radiant Orchid is featured on the cheeks of all our models—the rouge appears as a very natural, beautiful flush. We loved that it had such a feminine effect on the look. The rest of the makeup look is a bit softer in contrast.

Bumble and bumble is doing the hair. How did their styling enhance the beauty vibe?
CL: We have worked with Bumble before, and they have always been incredible at working with us to create the right mood for the hair. It is always a three-way dialogue among us, Aaron, and [stylist] Anthony [Turner]. We work together to ensure that one element doesn’t overpower, but rather enhances, the other.

Carol, how would you take this beauty look from the runway and make it your own?
CL: For me, I love taking one of the elements and incorporating it into my look: one day it might be the sheer balm on the lips, another day it might be a bolder shadow on the eyes. There are a lot of elements to play with.

Did you learn any beauty tips or tricks to recreate this look?
CL: Yes…to always start by making sure all the basics are covered! An even skintone, good eyebrows to frame the face, and moisturized skin!
