notes | So I’m starting to get in the holiday spirit and I went to a hockey game last night and the scarf part popped into my mind, so you get this. Hope you enjoy!

It’s Iris’s idea to go to the botanical garden’s annual light show the day before Christmas Eve. Ever a lover of their holiday displays, she’d bought the tickets weeks ago, insisting that they’d all need something to get them into the holiday spirit, claiming that with their busy lives (jobs and meta humans and the myriad of related disasters that seem to come with the territory) they’d be too distracted otherwise. She is, of course, completely right—so much so that they barely make the final minutes that it’s open, but they do: Caitlin pulls them into the lot (all still tugging on more weather appropriate clothes) about five minutes before the ticket counter closes (Barry’s pretty sure he’s still bleeding somewhere, but had decided against mentioning it, when he’d seen Iris looking anxiously prepared to be disappointed, and Caitlin standing with her coat over her arm).

That was half an hour ago, before the temperature seemed to drop substantially, leaving them on the far end of the gardens, wandering slowly as they take in the lights and chatter in little groups. Iris is tugging Eddie along at the front of their group, eager to see everything and snap an occasional picture, completely missing the adoration on her fiancé’s face as he sneaks in shots of his own, Iris’s smile lit in Christmas lights, wide eyed and completely happy. A little ways behind, giving them space, trail Cisco and Joe, trying to brainstorm ways to trick out Joe’s front yard (at least on Cisco’s side, Joe’s mostly just humoring him).

Barry and Caitlin are a little father back yet, strolling quietly through the displays and commenting here and there about what they find particularly well put together. Or at least, that’s ostensibly what they’re doing—Barry at least is also sneaking occasional looks at Caitlin, enjoying the way she smiles slightly at the simpler arrangements, unassuming and typically full of meaning. Eventually, he realizes his distraction and shakes loose enough to notice more than the curve of her lips and the lingering directions of her gaze.

The Slithering Ink Holiday Writing Contest!

Yeah, you read that title correctly. In order to celebrate the upcoming holidays and the amount of support I’ve received for this blog, I’m forcing you guys to don your thinking helmets, grab your massive pen-swords and duke it out in a no-holds-bar writing death match where there can only be one!

Okay, that’s not entirely true, there will be more than one winner:

  • First Place.
  • Second Place.
  • Third Place.
  • Runner Up x2.

With the prize of fabulous stories selected by Mel from My Bibliophile Side and I:

  • 11/22/63 by Stephen King
  • The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
  • The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth
  • Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore
  • Storm Front by Jim Butcher
  • Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet

The First, Second, and Third Place Winners will be allowed to selected one book (new, physical copy) from the list as their prize. The First Place Winner having the first choice, and so forth. All winners will be published in separate posts on this blog showcasing their entries. Runners Up will just be published.

So, you’re probably wondering what you have to do to win awesome books! Well the contest is pretty simple. You may either write a poem in any format (this includes songs), or a short story with a minimum of 500 words to a maximum of 2k words.

The entries must contain these four things and they may be included however you’d like (as part of the title, in a description, a piece of dialogue, a main story element, etc):

  • A present (as in a gift).
  • A pen/pencil or another writing tool.
  • Ink.
  • And a dragon.

Please submit your work to: slitheringink@gmail.com in a readable format (.txt, .pdf, .doc, .docx, .odf, or in the body of your e-mail). Do not, do not, do not, send me any entries via the Tumblr ask box or submission page on the blog. I will not accept them unless they are sitting in my e-mail box.

DEADLINE:

Because I know that some of you are busy with National Novel Writing Month, the deadline for this contest is FEBRUARY 2ND @ 11:59 PM EST. I figured that would give you guys enough time to work on something and maybe get rid of the New Years hangover.

Mel and I will be doing the judging so here are some things to keep in mind with your entries:

  • Be sure to include all four elements. Entries that do not will be set aside no matter how awesome they are.

  • Please take the time to edit your entries for grammar and other errors. Messy entries reflect carelessness and we’re not going to waste time sifting through them.

  • All entries will be judged objectively and on their own merits.

  • Your entry may be in any genre.

  • This contest is open to followers of this blog ONLY. I will be checking so please include your Tumblr username in the subject line of your e-mail.

On another note, before you enter, be sure that you have a valid shipping address and you are comfortable/allowed to give it to me in case you win. I will ship internationally.

After the deadline, the time for judging may be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the number of entries. I’ll announce a date to reveal the winners once I have a better idea.

Good luck and happy writing.

-Morgan

Happy Thorsday!

Hello everyone! I’m a day late for Rennsday, but today is a pretty fabulous day as well. I’m going to a Thor marathon leading up to The Dark World premiere, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Back on topic, I hope to update the directory sometime in the near future, and I apologize for my absence with it lately.

I’m also thinking about doing another fanfiction contest like we held last spring for the holidays, open to Jeremy or any of his characters. I do have a few things around that could be used as prizes, and I’m playing around with a few more ideas, but I’d like to open up the door for ideas from you guys.

Any suggestions for items that relate to Jeremy or his characters? Not including the movies themselves of course.

Also, would having a prompt of yours filled appeal as a prize? And would anyone be interested in writing prompt fills for contest winners? I could try my hand at it too, but I don’t know that anyone would want that!

Feel free to hit up my askbox or email your thoughts to jrfrustration@gmail.com.

I have a question about the holiday contest : When you say use 'Present (Noun)' which means the period of time now occurring, do you have to use the word 'present'? (For example: "And now, onto present times.") (That's also a really bad example. I apologise.)

Ack! I don’t think my brain was working when I wrote that. Apologies.

I just modified it in the main post but by present I meant a gift (as a noun can be a person, place, thing, animal or idea). It is easiest to use a physical object, however you can get creative and use something a bit less concrete, like a concept or an idea if you’d like. The point is to give something to someone, being it’s the holiday season and all. :)

It’s broad to let you guys be creative, but thank you for your question. I hope that clarifies things.

10

Each picture depicts a different person. Each of these people has been acting in at least one musical in Finland during the year 2012. Each of these photos has been featured, in some form, in Fuck Yeah, Finnish Musical Theatre!.

Since I’ve a feeling no theatre is going to sponsor this contest by giving us a ticket to their spring hit musical, the prize is, apart from the nice feeling of accomplishment, a picture of your favourite Finnish musical star drawn by me [Starlene here in Tumblr]. Take a peek at my art here to know what you might be getting.

How to enter:

  • Send your guesses, and the name of your favourite Finnish musical actor, to the blog ask box.
  • Don’t send anonymous messages if you have a Tumblr account, and include at least your first name if you don’t.
  • Enter by December 24th.

Choosing the winner:

  • The winner will be whoever gets the most actors right.
  • If many people get the same number of them right, one winner will be picked at random among them.
  • The winner will be announced after Christmas, and the drawing will follow right when I get it done.
  • I will also raffle a sketch completely at random, taking everyone who’s entered into account – so you might still win a sketch, even if you don’t get anyone right.

Have fun guessing!

Quiz Time XV

Feeling up for some jolly old games? Want to try your luck and win a contest? Both of those after the break.

Last time, I asked if anyone knows the name of Tails’ plane. And the winners are…
sharkman-arcanum
AND
bucketlistmod
The answers I was looking for were: Tornado and Tornado II. Unless there have been any inconsistencies in the main video game universe, the first Tornado is a red biplane, and the second Tornado is a blue biplane.

One more game before Christmas Hiatus? Okay, but only because I know you’ve all been good boys and girls this years.

QUIZ TIME!!!

There sure was a lot of Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, Zero Gravity, and Free Riders. Can you name me some? Multiple winners again this time~.
AND FOR BONUS POINTS…
For those staying up late, I’ll be making the final changes to the front page of the blog at Midnight, US Central Time. What did I change exactly? Do you like it?

Well, no questions today, but I need to make a very important announcement before I go…

CONTEST REMINDER:
TOMORROW IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SUBMIT YOUR “SHARING SONIC” STORIES!!

There’s not much I can do this year. If you hit the Ask Button and share your Sonic stories with me, and I’ll share them on this blog just before Christmas. However, I’ve been meaning to ask you all a question…

Would you like a chance to win REAL Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise?

I couldn’t do that this year, but if there’s enough interest, and maybe if enough people start submitting their stories, I’ll make next year’s holiday season a special one to remember!
Next year, three lucky people could have a chance to win FREE SONIC STUFF, and one of those winners could be YOU!!!

What do you think? Sounds interesting? Click the Ask Button and tell us what you think. If there is enough interest, then I’ll definitely work hard to make that happen next year!
For now, enter this year’s contest while you can, because the deadline is DECEMBER 22, 11:55 PM.
More information is right here.

EDIT: Contest is over. See you all next year!

Well, that’s it for tonight. Didn’t get a lot of questions today, but keep your spirits high and the music playing, and maybe you’ll get the gifts that keep on giving.

Keep the beats pumpin’.
-Samurai Echidna.

Contest Winners!

Holiday Contest is over! Using Random.org, I raffled the two people whose favourite Finnish musical actor I will draw…

Four people got 9/9 (Chike Ohanwe, Thérèse Karlsson, Esko Roine, Eriikka Väliahde, Jyri Lahtinen, Mira Luoti, Sören Lillkung, Maria Ylipää, Tuukka Leppänen), and out of them, nyanizm is the winner! She’ll get a drawing of Samuel Harjanne.

Out of all of the participants, no matter what their score was, lilyluna87 wins and gets a drawing of Anna-Maija Tuokko!

Keep an eye on this blog, the pictures will be released here when finished. Thanks for participating and congrats to the winners! And have a fun last week of 2012! :D
