holiday-celebration

Here’s the Cartoon Network schedule from Monday, May 29 (aka Memorial Day) to Sunday, June 4.

Celebrating a holiday with a Teen Titans Go! marathon is so common it doesn’t really shock me anymore. At least the movie selection that day is decent. A LEGO DC Super Hero Girls special airs super early, too. Repeats on Saturday.

Steven Universe getting FOUR new episodes, which is rad. The reruns from Tues-Thurs are the Wanted episodes airing again.

A lot of Gumball and Teen Titans Go! on the weekend, not exactly sure why. But dear god look at that movie premiere on Sunday. Dear god.

New episodes/specials/movies this week:

  • LEGO DC Super Hero Girls: Galactic Wonder - Monday at 8:00a
  • Teen Titans Go! - “Special” episode - Monday at 6:00p
  • Ben 10 - “Special” episode - Monday at 6:15p (knowing CN, it might air directly after TTG with no commercial break)
  • Steven Universe: Wanted - FOUR new episodes - Monday at 7:00p
  • Surf’s Up - Friday at 4:15p
  • Transformers: Robots in Disguise - Saturday at 6:30a
  • Justice League Action - TWO new episodes - Saturday at 7:30a
  • The Powerpuff Girls - Sunday at 5:30p
  • Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania - Sunday at 5:45p

Top 3 shows:

Teen Titans Go! - 144 - 46%

The Amazing World of Gumball - 87 - 28%

Ben 10 - 43 - 14%

The top 3 shows are 88% of the schedule. Uh oh.

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day? Shortly after the Civil War, a group of Union veterans called for a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers on May 30. The date was perhaps selected because flowers were in bloom all across the U.S. by late May.

In 1888, Congress declared Decoration Day a federal holiday in the District of Columbia so that veterans in federal employ could honor their fallen comrades and not lose a day’s pay. Decoration Day gradually became known as Memorial Day as the holiday expanded to commemorate veterans of all wars.

In 1968, Congress passed a law that named and moved several federal holidays. Included in H.R. 15951 was the official declaration of Memorial Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.

H.R. 15851, 05/10/1968, Records of the U.S. Senate

ahhhh i realized that somewhere in the distant future when i’m done with the conversion process and maybe have friends, i can invite people to celebrate holidays w me? i don’t have to be alone every time just cause no one in my family shares my faith

More Humans are Weird

Because this hash tag is SO FUN and thought-provoking.

GENDER:
No one can keep up with humans and gender. There are no easy signs to tell who is what, not clothing, not body morphology, not how they paint themselves or their grooming or vestigal hair. The humans themselves argue about how many genders there are. Eventually they quit trying and refer to all humans as ‘they’. Most humans are fine with that, even compliment them on their support (?) and progressive views (??). A few humans are offended, but are shouted down by their other humans. The other beings of the galaxy officially give up.

SEX:
Some humans want to have sex all the time. Others barely can stand to be touched at all, even casually. Some will have sex with their own gender, which does not produce offspring and is confusing to many. Some will have sex only with certain people, some will have sex with anyone. SOME will have sex with other species, occasionally challenging their own safety and everyone else’s. None of this is considered strange. Anyone saying it is strange is again shouted down and shamed into silence. The other beings of the galaxy officially give up.

CATS:
Humans adopt small predators as pets and kiss their “widdle faces” and giggle over their clawed toes (???) and fuss and are thrilled when the predators sleep with them (isn’t that UNSAFE? IT IS FULL OF POINTY BITS) and often sport scratches and bite marks inflicted when the animal was ‘playing’.
“When were these ‘cats’ domesticated?”
“Oh, we never really domesticated them. We just let them move into the house with us. Aren’t they CUUUUUTE? Come here, baby.” -kissy noises-
The other beings of the galaxy again give up.

RELIGION:
Wars fought. Millions - probably billions, through history - killed. Crew members huffy with each other. Various holidays celebrated, none of which make sense, some of them celebrating events that are physically impossible and could not have happened. All for something that can’t be proved.
The other beings of the galaxy would think this was all an elaborate prank if it wasn’t for the body count.

GERMS:
Humans get INFECTED and act as if it is a personal affront, and cuss about it. They confine themselves to quarters so they don’t infect the rest of the crew - very kind, in that respect - and otherwise wrap themselves in bedding and bitch about it for three days while doing their work by remote - “It’s fine, just a cold.” followed by horrifying noises they call ‘coughing’ and ‘sneezing’ -  and HOW. HOW DO THEY EVEN.
The other beings of the galaxy, for whom infection is always life-threatening, boggle from a safe distance. With respirators on.

ALPHA PREDATOR…?
They come from a death planet, these naked apes with no armor, no fangs, no speed. They have the ability to conquer the galaxy, if they only agreed with each other long enough that it was their goal. Instead they poke their noses into other death worlds, ‘exploring’, they call it, adopting horrifying creatures and making friends with other predatory beings, brewing poisonous beverages from whatever they can scrounge, which they then drink for fun. The rest of the galaxy is relieved. If humans had an attention span, they would truly be in trouble.

No one wants to know what a ‘shark’ is. Humans seem to be afraid of them, and if it frightens the humans, the rest of the galaxy is, to a being, terrified.

Cinco de Mayo is an outstanding holiday that celebrates the triumph of a small army over an imperialist force, a source of pride for the people of Pueblo as well as Mexicans north of the border (especially after the brutal American land grab in 1848). But nobody is living it up in the club or at the frat houses honoring Pueblo or raising a glass for the Union and against the French.

Cinco de Mayo is simply a way for Americans to continue to render Mexicans invisible while honoring what they can consume: food, booze, and stereotypes.

Laurel’s Guide to Grimoires

A while back I made a post about how I organize my Grimoire/Book of Shadows and for a long time since then I’ve wanted to a sort of 101 for creating a Grimoire/Book of Shadows. Be warned, this will be a long post! As always, this is merely my opinion, my word is not law.

-The Grimoire Basics-

What is a Grimoire?

As my own personal definition, a Grimoire is simply any book used by a witch in his/her/their own personal practice. There is no limit as to what a Grimoire can or cannot be, as each one is as unique as the witch who wrote it.

How do I use a Grimoire?

A grimoire is used to document, or keep track of, any magickal information that is relevant to the practitioner. It serves to log everything you need to know in your own personal craft.

-Types of Grimoires-

These are my own personal “styles” of grimoires that I have made over the years. These are not the only “kinds” of grimoires, merely suggestions.

- “Textbook” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that is set up to serve as a reference book, a book strictly for spiritual or magickal information.

- “Practical” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that can serve a practical purpose, such as a recipe or spell book. Often more portable than a standard grimoire.

- “Inspirational” Grimoire: These are often called inspiration journals. They are filled with spiritual images, quotes and writings to serve as a sort of “bible.”

- “Memory Keeping” or “Journal” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that serves to be a personal record of thoughts and feelings pertaining to spiritual activity in your life.

-Grimoire Keeping Methods-

- Blank bound or spiral bound Notebooks
    - I’ve actually seen someone tape composition notebooks together to get             a “thick” book.
- Recycled or used hard/soft cover books
- Binders
- OneNote/Tumblr/Internet
- Computer Folder/Flash Drive/Memory Card

-How to make a Grimoire-

I recommend that if you are starting a grimoire or are a relatively new witch, don’t even bother buying a nice, expensive, fancy journal. Most of the time (unless you’ve already done one or two grimoires before and you know exactly what you’ll be putting in this grimoire), that book will sit on a shelf and collect dust. Many new witches get excited to have a “fancy” grimoire and then become terrified of “messing up” in it which results in that book never being used. We’ve all been there, done that.

That being said, here are the basic steps I followed when making my “permanent” grimoire.

- Decide on your Grimoire Keeping Method
 - Gather the information that you would like to put into your grimoire (this can sometimes take a very long time, it took me years), although if the “write as you go” method is more comfortable for you, then go ahead.
- Organize your information. If you’re a perfectionist like me, this might take a bit. It’s also completely natural to change up your organization style later on.
- Protect/Consecrate your Grimoire. This is completely optional, but it can also be a fun “witchy” way to bond with your grimoire.
- Put all your information in your book in anyway that you desire. I found it useful to “plan” out the book before I started writing in all the information. This way I knew exactly what pages were going where.
- Decorate your Grimoire. Also, completely optional. Some people like decorating with flowers and ribbons and pictures and stickers. Other people prefer straight to the point text. Either way works perfectly fine.

A quick note for those who suffer from the perfectionist complex: don’t sweat it. We all want our books to be “perfect” but after writing about six grimoires I’ve learned that grimoires really don’t ever become “permanent” because our preferences change as we grow. If you’re worried about it being perfect, starting “planning” pages in a cheap journal. Take note of any mistakes or things you want to change. You can always create another grimoire later. Don’t let that pesky perfectionism hold you back. And if you make mistakes, try to work with them and turn them into something else instead of scrapping your book to start over.

I used to dream of having a huge, Charmed-like Grimoire, and now I prefer the small, sloppy, scrap book, messy-writing kind of grimoire. Don’t sweat it.

How to organize your Grimoire

This post details my own personal Grimoire Index. However the best way to organize your grimoire would be whatever works best for you. I personally like having everything divided into matching sections. However, if you write spells a lot, you may want spell writing notes in the front, while correspondences would be better in the back. It’s all up to personal preference.

Other Grimoire Tips

- Intention Cheat Sheets. When you want to write a spell, nothing sucks more than having to flip back and forth all over your grimoire to find the information you need. My advice is to make “cheat sheets” for each of your intentions. Pick an intention, such as Money, and write down anything that corresponds to that (colors, herbs, moon phases or zodiac signs, crystals, incense, etc) this way the next time you want to do a spell for Money, you can just flip to your cheat sheet and be done. (UPDATED 4/24/17)

- Incognito Grimoire: Find a generic book that you like at a Goodwill or second hand shop. Write your witchcraft notes/correspondences in the margins and spacing. Use markers or crayons to draw pictures and symbols. You can also glue blank pages into the book so you have more space to write anything you want. This way your Grimoire can sit in plain sight on your bookshelf when you have company over and no one will be the wiser.

- So You Don’t Think You Can Grimoire: Tips and ideas for witches who struggle with the “My handwriting is terrible and I can’t draw” complex. (UPDATED 4/24/17)

- Scrapbook Altars

- Create a Magickal Memories Folder

This post will probably be a “masterpost” of sorts that I’ll continue to add to as the inspiration strikes. If anyone has any ideas or grimoire-related topics they’d like to see, feel free to share!

Remember, just because you once went to a quinceañera or traveled to Cabo for spring break doesn’t mean you understand the Mexican culture and it gives you absolutely no right to use the culture as a costume.

And look, I totally get it — Cinco de Mayo is a perfect excuse to unwind during the week and drink with friends, but just take a little time to learn more about the culture and holiday you’re celebrating. Read more (Opinion)

anonymous asked:

Hello! These blogs are so super helpful, and yours is here just in time for me to begin writing my story! So thank you so much for your help in advance. I'm writing a story about a soldier that was captured during war. Part of the story is him struggling to trust his therapist enough to open up about what happened. During this time where he refuses to talk to anyone, how would PTSD affect his everyday actions, his thoughts, etc.? Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Have a great weekend!!!

Hooboy. I’m going to just list several symptoms of PTSD and explain how they would each drain his energy and limit his ability to do things and how to include these in your writing.

1. Hyper-Arousal

  • Hyper-vigilance: Every little sound and shadow is going to make his brain go into overdrive. It is going to kick his fight-or-flight mode on high and its almost never going to calm down. This is EXTREMELY draining. His brain and body is going to be a coiled spring, ready for danger, at all times. This is physically exhausting and drains spoons incredibly quickly.
    • Some ways this will change his daily life - he won’t be able to spend as much time in crowds or even just outside his house because there is too much stimulation for him to handle for to long. He probably won’t sleep well because again, all those little noises houses make at night is going to make him panic and lose more spoons - he could combat this by getting a white noise machine.
  • Emotional Outbursts: Many individuals with PTSD may experience unstable emotional states.
    • It wouldn’t be odd for him to suddenly feel very angry or irritable with no recognizable reason or target. He may also swing the other way and start crying without any warning. These episodes are extremely draining and there frequency may prevent your character from getting things done.
  • Lack of Concentration: High levels of distraction, the hyper-vigilance, the adrenaline constantly running through his body is going to make if difficult for your character to concentration for an extended period of time.
    • This lack of concentration may make it difficult for your character to work, attend school, do homework or fill out things like medical forms for doctors appointments. This could lead to him pushing such appointments back because he is unable to prepare for them.

2. Avoidance

  • Situational Avoidance: Your character is going to try to avoid any situation that might remind him of his trauma.
    • If he was in a tank that was bombed, he may go out of his way to avoid driving. If something happened in a wooded area, he may take a longer route to avoid a similar area because it reminds him of his trauma. This could make your character miss deadlines, appointment times, or cause a significant amount of time to be dedicated to this avoidance which means other things will not get done.
  • Social Isolation: Another type of avoidance is social avoidance - this means your character may avoid his family and friends, either because he doesn’t have the energy to be social or being around other people cause him to panic. Being forced into these situations would drain his energy very quickly.
    • This may cause him to avoid things like birthday celebrations, holiday parties, any type of gathering. These events are going to be extremely exhausting as your character is already tired and the amount of people and noise are going to exhaust him.
    • Something else that might influence his social isolation is his PTSD influencing his view of other people - he may begin to mistrust others and feel as if the world is a dangerous place. This mindset is extraordinarily draining and would significantly impact his energy levels.
  • Triggers: Triggers are sights, sounds, smells, situations, items; pretty much anything that reminds your character of his trauma.
    • Before he is aware of his triggers, he will most likely stumble upon many of them and suffer from flashbacks or anxiety attacks, which is extremely exhausting.
    • When he knows his triggers, he is going to try his best to avoid them, which may mean changing his routine, getting up earlier to go shopping when it is quieter, not going to fun events like fairs or the movies because he doesn’t want to fun into a trigger.
    • Triggers are often unavoidable or unexpected, prompting exhausting anxiety attacks or flashbacks multiple times a day, eating up time to get things done and exhausting your character.
      • Consider what his trauma consists of - does it involve guns? If so, it might not be just real guns that can trigger an anxiety attack or flashback. Plastic guns, guns in movies or TV shows, sounds that are similar like a car backfiring or fireworks, the smell of gunpowder, even just something that shoots something, like a Nerf Gun. Think through his potential triggers and then think about all the situations those could be found in - he is going to have to schedule his entire day around avoiding these triggers, especially when he is not actively working with his therapist on his trauma at this point.

3. Flashbacks/Remembering the Trauma

  • Nightmares: When he does fall asleep, he is most likely going to have nightmares.
    • He may or may not remember the specifics of the nightmare, but he will most likely wake up in a panic, shaking, sweating. It’s going to take him a long time to fall back to sleep, if he even does. If he does fall back to sleep, it may be a very tense sleep, waking up frequently and not allowing his body to relax - this means he is going to wake up in the morning already exhausted, anxious, and running on panic.
  • Flashbacks: Flashbacks are often one of the stereotypical symptoms of PTSD, however they are extremely common. Flashbacks may happen multiple times a day, at varying severity each time.
    • One type of flashback is an emotional flashback - these flashbacks only affect the individuals emotional state, not their senses. So if your character is triggered and reminded of his trauma, his emotional state may quickly move to match the emotional state during the trauma - so intense fear, adrenaline, anger, sadness. These intense episodes that may come at anytime, last up to an hour, and are extremely exhausting.
    • The common type of flashbacks you see in media are sometimes called ‘full flashbacks’ or ‘psychological flashbacks’. This is when the brain believes that it is back during the traumatic event, and the individuals senses - sight, hearing, smell, taste - are going to be taken back to the moment of the trauma. Your character will not be fully in reality at the time and any attempts to touch or otherwise break the individual out of the flashback could result in a negative or fearful reaction. These flashbacks can also last a significant amount of time and be draining.

Now, you said that this was before your character began working with his therapist, but these symptoms won’t go away suddenly. As your character begins to work through his trauma and develop coping skills, these symptoms may decrease in severity or disappear all together eventually. However, some PTSD sufferers will always have some of these symptoms and have to cope with them.

I hope this helps!

새해 복 많이 받으세요!~

Happy Lunar New Year Everyone!~

Today, let’s take the time to learn about Korean culture on this widely celebrated holiday!~

Here are 6 things you should know about 설날 (Lunar New Year’s Day in Korea):

1. 설날 (seol-lal):

설날 is one of the biggest holidays for Koreans! Just like the New Years for us ‘Muricans, 설날 is a momentous time of the year for families to come together and celebrate with lots of love, laughs, warmth, and of course, wonderful food!

2. 차례 (cha rye)

차례 is an ancestral rite performed on 설날. Traditional foods are specifically arranged and set on a ritual table where families bow to ‘greet’ ancestral spirits to express gratitude and pray for the family’s wellbeing throughout the upcoming year.

3. 세배 (sae bae)

세배 is a deep traditional bow often performed in respect to one’s seniors. In my family, we all gather and bow to our eldest grandparents and receive their wisdom and wishes for us!

4. 새해 복 많이 받으세요!~

This phrase is used especially when bowing to an elder. It means: “I wish you many blessings (much luck) this year!”

5. 세뱃돈 (sae baet don)

세뱃돈 is the New Year’s “gift of money”. After children perform the 세배 to family elders, they often receive some money (세뱃돈) as well as the wishes and wisdom that the elders impart on them. Korean 세뱃돈 can be likened to the money given in Chinese custom, 红包. (恭喜发财、红包拿来 hahaha)

6. 떡국 (tteok guk)

떡국 is a Korean traditional soup that is made and eaten with the family.

Interesting facts~

구정 and 신정: Korea has two New Year’s celebrations! On January 1st, the celebration of the solar new year is called 신정 (shin jeong), and the lunar new year celebrated in late January / early February is called 구정 (gu jeong)!

Hope this helps and happy studying!~

‘  you are endlessly,  implausibly fascinating.  ’
‘  you are like hot chocolate,  you make my insides warm.  ’
‘  you are more beautiful than my favorite songs.  ’
‘  you fascinate me.  ’
‘  you make me feel safe.  ’
‘  you make me feel how i never thought i could.  ’
‘  you make me understand lyrics to cheesy love songs.  ’
‘  you make my heart feel light as a feather yet heavy as bricks all at once.  ’
‘  you,  my dear,  have the voice of an angel.  ’
‘  your  ‘ i love you ’  has turned into my favorite lullaby.  ’
‘  your arms are home to me.  ’
‘  your eyes make me think about stormy skies in a different way,  your smile makes me blush just thinking about it  &  i think i am totally in love with you.  ’
‘  your hands are my favorite hands to touch  &  to hold.  ’
‘  your hands are so warm  &  your hair is so soft  &  i want to touch you forever  &  ever.  ’
‘  your love for me reminds me to love myself.  ’
‘  your smile is the most beautiful sight on this earth.  ’
‘  you’re the highlight of my day.  ’
‘  you’re the only person who can make me feel this way.  ’

Okay here’s why gentiles celebrating Jewish holidays is fundamentally wrong

here are some of our holiday: passover (escaping slavery), channukkah (resisting assimilation under threat of genocide), purim (escaping genocide). See a pattern? Most of jewish history is about being punted around from place to place because no one wants us between pogroms, ghettoes and shtetls.

When you celebrate a Jewish holiday as a non-Jew, you take our history of suffering and turn it into your little party and then happily step out of it. You play dress up as a Jew with no care for the suffering of actual Jews, historical and modern.

Now this is ESPECIALLY bad when Christians do it. Lots of times it was Christians instigating pogroms, confining us to ghettoes and trying as hard as they could to destroy our cultures. You don’t get to profit off of 2,000 years of systematic destruction and then pretend you’re Jewish.

While we’re here. Messanic Jews ARENT jews.

a lot of the stuff I see about celebrating Jewish holidays (particularly passover) is that you all want to do what Jesus did. How ever, please consider:

1) Jesus was Jewish. He was born a Jew and died a Jew

2) you are not Jewish

Most Jewish families LOVE to share their holidays and culture. If you’re interested in learning, there are networks to help people find seders. But above all remember you are a guest. Eating someone else’s food in someone else’s house and having someone else’s culture graciously shared with you.

and if you REALLY need to celebrate Jewish holidays yourself, consider why and maybe look into conversion.

[361]  こどものひ  |  kodomo no hi  |  children’s day

Children’s Day (こどものひ) is a Japanese national holiday which takes place annually on May 5 to celebrate children’s happiness.
On this day, families raise the carp-shaped koinobori flags, with one carp for the father, one for the mother, and one carp for each child.
The day was originally called Tango no Sekku and was known as Boys’ Day while Girls’ Day (Hinamatsuri) was celebrated on March 3.
In 1948, the government decreed this day to be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children so it was renamed Kodomo no Hi.

Hey Jude

A/N: This is my really late submission for @percussiongirl2017 ‘s birthday challenge! Hopefully it was worth the wait. I had the prompt, “You can’t tell me how to live my life. You’re not my mother.” & my song is “Hey Jude” – The Beatles. The pairing is Dean x Sister!Reader however there is some Sam in there as well. The reader is the oldest sibling.

Dean x Sister!Reader   Sam x Sister!Reader

“Take care of Sam and Dean.”

That was your motto. You were eight years old when your mother died in the fire that turned your life upside down. You could remember the heat, the fear you felt, and how you had never gripped Dean’s hand or held onto Sammy so tightly then you did that night when you brought them out of the burning house.

Ever since then your father gave you one task, to take care of Sam and Dean. It wasn’t something that was foreign to you; it was something that you had loved helping your mother do. She had always lovingly referred to you as the mini mama because you enjoyed it so much.

So that’s what you did.
