The Door closes
As he supposes
One day they return
With a love unspurned.
What he fears.
A man wrangling
With feelings that keep tangling.
Whilst he rages
A Weed gathers
As she rathers
A life lived
Without emotions sieved.
I’ve been working in AutoCAD for about 10 weeks, and I love it. Sure, it was a pain in the ass to learn, but my course kind of threw us in the water and expected us to swim. Which, while did not work when I was 6 and my mom took me to the local pool to join a swim team, worked for me in AutoCAD. (You ever heard of sink like a stone? Yup. Me.)
Today I completed my floorpan, my exterior side elevation, front elevation and my 3 kitchen wall elevations despite working 35-40 hours a week and going to school part time, as well as still manage small parts of The Publishing House and That Kind of Woman. Also, hello, my social life.
What in gods green earth am I doing? Well, honestly I’m doing better than I have in a while. I feel challenge at something I don’t have interest in. Well, maybe thats not fair. I am interested in the fact that this business, my family’s business, was built from the ground up from my Grandfather, has motived my father to live a damn good life, and in turn, me. The amount of financial support that my parents have given me, that this business has given me, while obviously measurable, is intangible to a degree.
I’ve learned that every job I’ve ever had has led me to being tailor made for this current one. Office manager, accounts manager, seminar coordinator, editor, creative director and marketing lead. Those are all the hats I’m wearing currently. Oh, less we forget: student, friend, daughter, and woman.
I’ve worked in customer service since my first legal job at 15, as a photo lab technician at a CVS, I started Social Media Management at 16 at a local teen newspaper. I started part time work at the family business, phone calls, shipping, reception work at the age of 15. Kept with it until recently when I helped with marketing among other things, all the while branching out.
I worked in retail, social media, and marketing at 18 in a small Dog/pet boutique, I wrote articles for above mentioned newspaper since 14 for a tiny but worthy bit of money. At 20 I interned at a web-based magazine on Park Avenue in NYC, writing tech reviews, researching, press requests, reading contracts, working the backends of websites, and assisting every department. I started this blog which led me to jobs with internationally known brands. Friends! To meet, and love people from every corner of this country. To develop my sense of self and ability. I interned in manhattan at 22, for Maiyet, a sustainable fashion company in the Digital Marketing department, I ironed clothes on a photoset, helped create content, copy writing, did photo editing and office work. I spend a summer in a romance with the city and the people I met.
I worked for a retail jewelry store while applying for jobs and receiving offers in NYC and Philadelphia, to which I had to choose which, where and why. All the while aching to be in the country. Then, being an assistant manager, women’s buyer and merchandiser for a liquor/lifestyle brand’s brick and morter. Then opened up the Publishing House, concerts, photoshoots, dinners, celebrations, open mic nights, workshops, pop-up holiday markets, marketing and social media consulting, content creation for two separate jewelry companies. All the while working part time at a bed and breakfast 4 days a week, becoming an event planner, an assistant innkeeper, juggling everything from laundry, reception, concierge, to events, the boutique hospitality industry.
I’ve been collecting so much experience, learning from amazing people. Women, especially.
I’m here to change the way my family’s business runs. I’m hear to streamline it’s efforts into more. We’re so limited because of our lack of technology, but it’s also a beautiful, terrifying, and amazing thing. I get to start building a better business, a better customer experience, a better way to hold seminar’s on Hazardous Waste Compliance. Dry, but important. We work with universities, the Marine Corp, corporations, mom and pop companies, the US Government, and environmental advocates.
I’m terrified each day, that I will fuck up. But, I’m also a 27 year old woman who has made it this far, and done so much wonderful fucking stuff that I forget I’ve done.
Four years seems like the blink of an eye, but it’s been 10 wonderful years of me becoming a capable and kick ass person, despite what I feel on my bad days.
We’ve got this. Just keep pushing up against all the things pushing you down.
