hole punches

#optomstudies here with a post about university studying! I’ve been reading many study tips masterposts in the community, but some of these won’t work that well for university. So here are 3 tips for adapting to uni study!

Loose leaf? Notebook? Neither! (but if you must choose between the two, I recommend hole-punched loose leaf - easy to file :D) There is just no time, especially once you get to your higher years, that you will be able to write paper notes especially considering the level of detail that you are required to learn things to get good marks.

When I was studying therapeutics, lectures were more like an essay crammed into 60-80 ppt slides! Using 10pt Calibri, 1.15 spacing, custom 1cm margins - I still had 12 pages for a 2 hour lecture (see below)

Two lectures / week, for 12 weeks! Although this was the most-content heavy subject, my other courses were still way too time consuming to write notes for. Sadly, you can’t summarise much, because MCQs pick at details.

As for laptops, cheap netbooks are only ~$300, but I’d recommend these really great student laptops

And yet, you have to wonder why #studyblr doesn’t have more digital notes? Isn’t every studyblr the owner of a computer as a tumblr user? I’m trying to encourage everyone to feel more confident about posting their digital notes as part of the “#studyblrs get real” tag (see here), so if you have some great typed study notes, please tag me with #optomstudies and I’ll be happy to reblog you!

Read through your lecture slides so that you have a basic grasp of the topic before classes. If you have any readings assigned, do them too. This means that you’ll

  • go in knowing what concepts you need clarified
  • revise one more time (remember the forgetting curve?)
  • be much better placed to answer questions and participate in class discussions (get those participation marks!! ;))
  • find it easier to follow along with much more complicated topics than you’ve experienced in high school!
  • remember a lot more of the topic when you come back to revise later on!

Yes, I know, studyblr blasphemy right? But this is what you do when strapped for time. Particularly with biological/chemical sciences, lecturers will have basically summarised what you need to know on the slides.

Before your lectures, read through the slides (should take about 30 minutes for a 2 hour lecture) and mark/circle anything you don’t understand - then when you get to the lecture, jot down a clarification in your own words based on the professor’s explanation. Eventually, you’ll find that you have studied the topic well enough to not need your own footnotes.

It takes a little experience to know which professors have slides you can study off (tip: it’s usually the ones where you don’t have to write down much) but it’s totally worth the time you save!

Hope this has been an informative post about the differences between university and high school studying! Please follow me for weekly study tips, study pics and now kpop vocab lists!

  • Hoshi: (recording his voice) Day 1 without Mingyu. Rations are falling low. Only half a piece of lettuce and a jar of expired jam in the fridg- never mind. Woozi just ate them - that's disgusting. The AC broke last night, Coups tried to fix it - punched a hole through the wall instead. Vernon's been missing for 14 hours. Seungkwan went out looking for him - no news of him either. Dino's crying alone in the corner... ahh nope Dk is crying with him. The8 tried to cook and lit the stove on fire, Wonwoo and Jun are helping him put it out. Or making it worse? Joshua said he was going to take the trash out but it's been a few hours so I think he's trying to fly back to America instead. Jeonghan's still asleep - wait, is he breathing? Jeonghan? JEONGHAN? - (audio cuts out)

mj is still a little insecure of himself and he’s not as confident of his looks as he keeps saying he is and he’s still worried about how he’ll hit his notes when he stands up on stage to sing. i forget sometimes that he’s the oldest and he can feel just as pressured and stressed as anyone else because he’s always this loud, happy ball of sunshine that lights up rooms and smiles on everyone’s faces, and i just forget sometimes that he has his own worries too. it makes me so sad and frustrated that he cant see? how much he means to us??? how i gasp and clap my hands when he hits his high notes and the way his laugh rings out brightly, and how his dumb antics never fail to pull a laugh out of anyone, be it in the same room as he is or through a screen all across the world. he shines brighter than any sun out there in all the galaxies combined and that makes him 10x more attractive than he already is, and i wish he could see that im so sad

together we will create a home with no loud anger, no explosive rage, no slamming doors or breaking glass, no holes punched into the walls so hard that the foundation rocks and cracks. our home will be gentle, it will be warm. i will keep you safe and you will keep me still. no fear, no hurt, no worry. we come from broken and twisted places but together we will build something whole and safe. we will curl around each other like a pair of quotation marks at night, warm and comforted. in the mornings, you’ll sing in the shower again. we will heal, and we will raise a family that doesn’t need to heal.

some things i’ve learned from iasip commentaries
  • denim chicken is supposed to be chicken that’s boiled with blueberries so it turns blue like denim
  • the whole thing with mac being the sheriff of paddy’s and giving ocular patdowns was improvised
  • we’re not the only ones who make jokes about glenn & juilliard
  • danny devito wears crocs all the time irl
  • rcg like to point out everytime mac almost breaks
  • apparently they’ve gotten complaints that their show is too hard to fall asleep to
  • charlie wears his own shirts on the show and rob steals his from wardrobe
  • in hundred dollar baby, charlie legit pulls a car and kaitlin actually punches a hole in the wall
  • dowoon: looks like a cinnamon roll, could actually kill you
  • wonpil: looks like a cinnamon roll, is actually a cinnamon roll
  • brian: looks like he could kill you, could actually kill you
  • sungjin: looks like he could kill you, actually a cinnamon roll
  • jae: probably thinking about eating cinnamon rolls rn
“Creampuff Heist”

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader

Summary: Bucky wants to smuggle a dog out of the shelter but needs the help of someone who has experience carrying out a heist.

A/N: please remember it’s the owner who raises the dogs to be evil and aggressive, not the dog itself! - j. x

Bucky plops onto the cement in a heavy but swift manner. He wiggles his flesh fingers through the small holes of the chainlink gate, trying his best to get closer to the pitbull behind the gate.

When (Y/N) suggested he volunteer at the animal shelter as part of his therapy routine, Bucky grunted his reluctant approval. Truth be told, he initially didn’t have any interest in animal shelters and only agreed because he wanted to make (Y/N) smile.

But that all changed on his second day of volunteering, because for the second time in his life, Bucky Barnes fell in love.

Acting on instructions to check every water bowl, Bucky was making his way around the shelter when he made eye contact with a blue nose pitbull with scars running across her face. Both super-soldier and canine warily stared at each other, fatigue shining from both of their eyes, their posture a bit slouched.

The pitbull took the first step of courage, carefully padding to the chainlink gate barricading her from freedom. Her soulful eyes never breaking contact with his blue ones, the canine stuck out her muzzle to the best of her ability and licked his hand. And just like that, Bucky’s heart melted.

Her previous owners called her Scarface, but Bucky calls her Creampuff.

College Life 101

Alrighty folks, here are some nifty tips on how I survived (and could have better survived) college:

  • As soon as you have your schedule, email your professors. Everyone. Especially if you have questions about the course, if you’re going to miss, etc. also make sure you do it from your school email, many professors will not check an email if it isn’t from a school address.
  • On move in day, bring a door stop.  moving in is so much easier when you don’t need someone to hold the door for everything.
  • Shoe racks and command strips/hooks will be your best friend. Use the racks for misc. things like utensils, seasonings, Keurig mixes, hot chocolate, etc.
  • Bring a whiteboard/corkboard. Write down your classes and anything you need to get done for those classes and make sure that you keep it updated. On the cork side post up papers with important numbers, a map of campus, and other things you get.
  • SIGN UP FOR ACTIVITIES (ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE ON A SMALL CAMPUS) otherwise you’re not going to have a fun experience. Even if it’s just something you THINK you may have a slight interest in, try it!
  • Go to one or two sporting events, just for the hell of it
  • Put important dates in your phone calendar or even a planner. Somewhere you will be reminded of them. Times and dates are critical.
  • Eat. and eat well.
  • Use chegg, upper classmen, or other resources for textbooks before you buy them. Campus bookstores are astronomically expensive and it can be a lot cheaper going somewhere else. I use Chegg and they also send you free tide pods, coffee samples, etc.
  • Bring medicine that you’ve used in the last two years, even if you haven’t used it in a while just to be safe.
  • If you’re gonna do laundry on the weekends Friday and Saturday nights OR Sunday mornings are prime time. Be prepared for staying up late or getting up early to do laundry
  • PUT. A TIMER. ON. YOUR. LAUNDRY. Seriously, when you have to share a laundry room there is nothing more annoying than someone who won’t move their laundry out for other people.
  • On a related note DO NOT THROW OTHER PEOPLE’S LAUNDRY ON THE FLOOR. Fold it up, leave it on the dryers or w/e with a little note. Don’t be an asshole.
  • Keep extra pads and tampons around everywhere you go. Help yourself and/or ya menstruating friends out.
  • Bring a phone/laptop charger with you throughout the day. I know I personally have some long breaks between my classes where I do homework and w/e
  • Use Google docs for your assignments, or other programs that back up your work to the cloud. My laptop broke halfway through the semester and the only thing that saved me was Google Docs because my school uses gmail
  • Download Groupme. Right now. Do it. It’s a great way to create group chats, keep them in one place, and keep them backed up somewhere, you’re gonna have some for group projects, your dorm, any programs, etc.
  • Bring a three hole punch, scissors, glue, tape, notecards, and binders. Also get pocketed folders for any important research papers you may need to turn in.
  • ALSO DRY ERASE MARKERS ARE A LIFE SAVER. bring them around for studying in empty classrooms it’s v helpful
  • COLOR CODE YOUR BINDERS/NOTE BOOKS/STICKY NOTES. Your binder for one class and all its accessories should be one colors. Color organize your notes. (If you’re colorblind, use patterns or something simple for you.)
  • Try typing up your notes after classes, save them to your laptop and whatever online thing you use. Sometimes you’ll need your notes and you either won’t have your notebook, laptop, or both and it can be very important to keep your notes accessible.
  • Make use of tutoring services or other students/friends that are good in your classes. C’s get degrees and if people can help you understand it better then WOO
  • Try not to miss too many classes, but if you do make sure you contact your professors about it (or someone in that class.)
  • Sleep is v important, but can also be too good so set alarms at least a half hour before your classes to get ready and go.

Take deep breaths. Make friends. Take no shit, do no harm

((These are based off of my personal experiences, feel free to add on if you think of something))

roxwallyssox  asked:

I love you charms!! They are so cute!! As an artist trying to get started on selling my own products, i was wondering if i could ask how you make your packaging look so nice? I would love to learn how to make my stuff look so professional.

Oh me gosh, you have no idea how much that means to me… I’m emotional now! ( ・ᴗ・̥̥̥ ) Thank you very much lovely! ( ◜◒◝ )♡ I apologize in advanced for taking forever to answer your wonderful ask. You caught me right in the middle of prepping for a convention 。(*^▽^*)ゞ

Anywhosies~ Here’s a small tutorial on how I do my packaging for charms:

First, make your design. I sometimes sketch out the design on paper before I move onto Photoshop. Depending on how big you want your packaging to be, is how big you want your design to be. I prefer to use 3x5in and always work under a 300dpi/resolution or bigger. Make sure you are able to find baggies with your dimensions before you design. I’ll talk about this further into this tutorial.

Tip: Make your width at least .25in smaller! Some baggies are a couple of millimeters smaller from the actual width. I keep forgetting to fix this little detail thus why you see the width as 3in instead of 2.75in.

The design is really up to you. You can have a theme going on per set, per charm, or you can even just use your logo as the design for every charm and make your life easier lol  There’s no rules to follow, just have fun and design away!

Tip: Don’t overdue your designs though, you want the charm to be the main focus. Something simple yet fun and or elegant will work. Don’t be afraid to google examples of other people’s designs. That will give you an idea and get you going.

Save your designs! Save them as both a JPG and PS file (or as the software you are using).

Be organized! If you plan on having multiple designs or even make lots more charms in the future, name them so they are easier to find. Your packaging designs can even have their own folder or sub folder if needed.

Setting up. Open any wordpad or word processor of your choice and add your design. Depending on how big your design is, you’ll be able to fit more or less.

Print a test page. Print your design on your everyday normal paper just to check that everything looks okay! If your printer is like mine, it will be a troll and sometimes print a bit crooked, but don’t worry! Since they’ll be cut, it doesn’t affect your designs in any way.

Now let’s print…

Ta-daaaa! Here are my designs that I printed on the cardstock I fell in love with. The cardstock I use is called Astroparche Cover Stock and it’s from the brand, Neenah. I love the natural look it has–it’s not white, so ye be warned that the colors will have a small slight tint of yellow when printing. The cardstock is also thick enough for my printer to use and sturdy enough for my charms. You can find this cardstock on Amazon, but I was lucky enough to find it at my local Office Depot!

Tip: Photo paper can also be used if you so prefer. Again, whatever makes you happy and works best for you.

Get your handy dandy paper cutter ready…

Cut, cut, cut! Cut out all your designs with your paper cutter. I don’t suggest using scissors unless you trust your hand enough that it won’t mess up and cut straight! If you don’t have a paper cutter, note that you most certainly do not need to buy the huge guillotine type. There’s small ones that can be used and can even be taken with you to conventions! The one I use is small and cute and has been with me for three years and the extra blade that came with it has not been used yet. Amazing~

Punch, punch, punch! Time to get your hole puncher and punch them little holes. I actually have a special hole puncher with a 3mm hole, but you can definitely use a regular 6mm hole puncher. How far down you want your hole to be is up to you.

Tip: If you want to get fancy, you can even buy hole punchers that have cute hole designs! Like stars or hearts ♡ ☆ ♡ ☆

Baggies!!! So, remember how I said to make sure to find baggies with the dimensions you plan to use before designing? This is only because of the rare chance you use certain dimensions that there’s no baggies for. Always double check!

Anyways, when buying baggies, make sure that you go half and inch (or more) above your height so you can create a tab to fold back and tape your baggie shut. You can also find baggies that already have adhesive! It’s just a matter of what you like and what works for you. Maybe you want to get creative and use a cute sticker or washi tape to close your baggie, who knows! Some people even buy baggies with hang tabs to hang them for display when they’re tabling in conventions.

“But Dee, where do I find baggies??”

*squishes your cheeks and whispers*

Ebay… Ebay is your best friend. Search for clear cello/poly bags ( ̄▽ ̄*)

Almost there…

Setting up! Once you have your charms built and ready to go, it’s time to package them and use your new super duper amazing designs! For this, we’ll be using washi tape since it doesn’t leave any residue and it’s easier to peel off. Any washi tape will do, it doesn’t matter! I tend to rip off about 10-20 pieces at a time to have them ready to go. It makes things easier on my end.

For cellphone straps: Loop the strap inside the hole and align your charm. Once you are happy, tape the strap with the washi tape.

For key chains: Yes, it works just as well! But we’ll be needing ribbon, 3mm wide ribbon to be exact. Cut about 2in and loop one end inside the split ring while bringing the other end above. Bring both ends of the ribbon into the hole and align your charm. Once you are happy, tape the ribbon. You should now have your charm cutely hanging from the ribbon~

All you gotta do now is bag ‘em, seal ‘em, and you are ready to go! Look at you–you did it! I’m so proud of you ( ・ᴗ・̥̥̥ )

I hope this helps you and anyone else looking to start making their own unique packaging for their cute charms~ ❤ (ɔˆз(ˆ⌣ˆc)

mockingjaylivesnow  asked:

Hiya! So I just finished Lord of Shadows and my heart is swayed with the feels. Anyways, I don't know if this is too early to ask this but oh well, can we have hope that the Queen of Air and Darkness will soothe our broken hearts? Or is this just out of the frying pan and into the fryer?

NO SPECIFICS  BUT YOU CAN SKIP IF AVOIDING EVEN THEMATIC SPOILERS!

I would say there are aspects that are out of the frying pan into the fire, because if the danger to the characters was over there would be no third book — their adventures and experiences would be done. And in a lot of ways, TWP is almost a continuation of TDA: while Emma and Jules cease to be the main narrators, we move forward with a lot of the same characters from TDA — and that does include some of the same sources of evil and problems. So don’t look to those all to be solved forever.

Emotionally, I think Queen of Air and Darkness will not, though I can understand why one might worry, be an unremitting tragedyfest! Even though there are bitter losses sustained in Lord of Shadows, part of living is the process of making meaning out of death. Though the deaths in LoS were planned for a long long time, I will say that during the writing of LoS I lost someone very very close to me. My stepfather, on whom Luke was based, died suddenly.* So for me this is a very personal story as while I was writing it I was experiencing what it means to have a huge hole of grief punched right through your world.

I’ll talk more about this later, when everyone’s read the book, but for me the third book is in a big part about how grief changes people in ways that are sad, transforming, deepening, even positive; how death doesn’t have to be a pointless waste — how you can honor someone’s memory in a way that changes the world. In QuaD are funny parts, and there are happy romantic parts and friendship fuzzies and squee parts, because life is a mosaic of feelings and because loss doesn’t mean you’ll never laugh again, and you may value those good moments even more than you would have before. As the book’s dedication says, Your wounds are the place the Light enters you.

* The book is dedicated to him.

On pricing your artwork:

I wrote this originally for Artist Alley Network International, but it struck a chord with a lot of people, so re-posting here!

——–

Your artwork, and your merchandise, is WORTH SOMETHING!

1. You are producing something no one else can.  Even if there are a hundred other similar items, only you are making artwork like you.  That is worth something even if you don’t immediately see it.

2. You aren’t walmart.  You are a small business owner and need to charge what you’re worth rather than race to the bottom to see who’s the cheapest.   This ties into #1… so what if someone else has acrylic charms for $3. You are the only one selling YOUR art, so price it at it’s worth.

3. Shipping, storage, packaging, presentation, and protection are all worth extra.  Your item may only cost $1.50 to produce, but you also spent .10 to upgrade the quality.  You spent .50 cents to ship it.  You spent another $1 on packaging, and you spent $30 on the display it’s on.  You rent your apartment or garage for $500-1500/mo.  Your table cost you $300 to rent.  Your online store charges you .20 cents per sale plus a transaction fee. Your item will sell at a loss if you sell it for $2 or $3, even if production was less than that.  Factor in all these costs when you sell your item.  PLUS, your worth.  If you spent hours making the design, you deserve some of that in compensation!

4. Perceived value is actual value.  Customers who see an artist where everything is $2-3 probably will perceive it as less valuable than the artist who sells everything from $20-30, even if the artist selling cheaper actually puts more time into their work.  Perceived value also will change the way a customer approaches your artwork.  Will they cherish it and save it and frame it, or will they punch holes through it with a thumbtack, or will they forget it’s in their bag and find it bent up hours later?  Sometimes pricing your art higher actually creates DEMAND, because it now looks like it’s worth something.

5. fast sketch does not necessarily = cheap price.  Did you spend money on your art education?  Are you experienced in your field?  Is there a lot of demand for your artwork?  Do you work professionally with many clients? Did it take you years and hours to develop your style and speed?  All of these are separate from how long it takes you to draw.  Which is why a 10 minute sketch might be worth $40 rather than minimum wage x time spent drawing.

6. We are all in this together.  If you fight with your neighbors on who can price art the cheapest to get the fastest sales, you are fighting a downhill battle which will ultimately make ALL of your artwork worth far less.  Instead, look at an artist and go “Wait a minute? They charge HOW MUCH?  That means I can charge that much, too”  When I sit in a row of artists charging what they’re worth, I notice that ALL of us make far more sales than if we underprice one another.
This also reflects in the market, too.  If a client who wants to charge $1000 for 24 illustrations is turned down by countless artists they’ll realize they have unrealistic expectations.  When people start seeing the $ sign, instead of factoring in their time and energy and take these low paying jobs, these clients will become upset when they see the artist they really wanted turning them down.  Obviously artists from different countries will price differently, BUT, if you’re selling to someone in a different country with a higher dollar value, ask for that higher value!  You’re competing against THEIR dollar rather than your country’s dollar at that point.  Same goes for pricing commissions online.

——-

Good luck everyone.  We’re all in this together!

Sorry for the delay, but here are a few pics requested by getas-babe

God I love this thing already. Drawing directly on the screen makes things so much easier. Like holy shit its not even funny. Talk about smooth. Words fail me. Also decided to give ya a lil peek of the first drawing done on it.

Eight of the strongest female characters

1. She was so strong that our hero, who had always admired her strength, was moved by her murder to find within himself the power to finally defeat the Platinum Wraith.

2. Her physical awesomeness was such that armour would have only hampered her. Since she had solemnly sworn to uphold the rule of law and that included the part on public decency, she always made sure to wear at least a bra and some shorts, even though she could probably have beaten that spider god first time if it hadn’t been for the sticking-in underwire.

3. She was so strong that her only weakness was love. And also generosity. And wistfulness, that was also her only weakness. And maybe anger. But apart from feelings, she was totally as strong as all the other strong people.

4. Actually her strength was feelings. But in a science way. Through the brilliant alchemy of her brain, she was able to show that Einstein’s equations solved perfectly for all quantum universes if corrected for the force of love. And goodness me, wasn’t it fortunate that she found her own capacity for love just as her planet fell towards the black hole?

5. She could punch through a brick wall, leap over a canyon and stink out a hyena den. Unable to secure an advertising contract, she had to fall back on stress-testing superhero armour in a factory to pay the bills.

6. Her strength came entirely from within; from that deep, secret, mysterious and kind of moist place inside her where the moon’s pallid magic weaves its unknowable mystery.

7. She was definitely the strongest at sass and at least in the top ten at flirting. Some of the younger members of the team suspected that she might not have any real hero powers at all, but every time the issue came up she would fire off approximately a mega-bant of sass, leaving them disarmed and gasping.

8. Everyone agreed that she was as strong as ten women; so strong, in fact, that there was no need to even have the other nine women in the team, which was absolutely great, you’ve no idea how helpful that is, because there are only eleven seats on the hero bus and the others have already been promised to men and have you seen the prices of new buses these days?

Last night was the last time, I promise
All I feel for you now is hate
I use to be so kind, I swear I did
But you injected hate into my veins
And everything is red
I’ve made a nasty habit of punching walls whenever something reminds me of you
I would have punched a hole through the roof last night if I hadn’t have been so drunk I couldn’t even walk
I won’t call again, I promise
It always leaves me too empty
