Eat Your Way Through Europe By Casey Hatfield Chiotti
When I travel, I follow my nose—and it rarely steers me wrong. It has taken me to a bakery making rustic loaves in a wood-burning oven in the Dordogne, a vendor by the sea grilling fresh turbot and king prawns in Morocco, and down a narrow street in Venice to find a perfect trattoria. I also try to find an in-the-know local (bartenders are great resources) and pick his or her brain. That’s how I ended up at a restaurant at the base of a castle, eating handmade pasta in Tuscany.
There’s no better way to get to the heart of a culture and a place then through its food. Here is a list of eight must-have dishes and delicacies in Europe to help you get started.
I write them down on the tiny notepads that lie around at work and tear the sheets off, and they’ve kind of been collecting for several weeks now. they’re about 50% to-do lists though, so we’ll see how long the post gets.
-we have Clean Force glass cleaner at work and every time I see it I think of The Flash and the SPEED FORCE. there’s a pun in there somewhere.
-some tumblrites treat everyone like they’re running for president, in terms of “moral standards”. ‘IS THIS THE BLOGGER YOU WANT RUNNING YOUR COUNTRY?!” well, probably not, but that’s not what they’re trying to do, so…
-when you’re an obsessive worrier like I am, it sometimes helps to remind yourself that backing away from those thoughts and saving it for later can help you come to a resolution. your brain keeps low-key working on stuff even when you’re not concentrating on it, and you might get insights into it from the thoughts that pop up when you’re not in a super stressy, anxious place.
-(to the tune of O Christmas Tree) “O hoagie roll, O hoagie roll/the roll just for my hoagies/O hoagie roll, O hoagie roll/you’re better than pierogies (disclaimer: not my actual opinion it’s just late and I needed a line)/for sausages or sandwiches/there’s just one bun for me, which is/O hoagie roll O hoagie roll etc.
-high school tragedy: one weird kid picks on another weird kid for being a different kind of weird, e.g. the kind that teachers like. both of them were actually just miserable all along.
-there was an actual guy with a beard and an eyepatch the other day at work.
-isn’t it weird how meeting someone different from you (see: those english guys who come through the cafe sometimes) makes you want to Say Something? like, intellectually you know it’ll come across as rude and there is literally no reason to say anything but you want to–what, impress them? let them know you “noticed”??? it’s so ridiculous! fortunately it also dies down with exposure.
(This takes a while but can feed a bunch of people and can have plenty of leftovers)
-beef cut of some sort (rib eye works the best in my opinion)
-mozzarella (both cheeses are optional but add a good flavor)
-Worcestershire sauce (tbsp)
-ketchup (adds thickness so however thick you want it)
-brown sugar (don’t add too much or it will be crunchy)
-Franks Red Hot sauce (optional)
Fire up that grill and slap that meat on there (or bake it). Meanwhile, saute all the veggies in a non-non stick pan (no rubber handle either~ needs to be oven safe) Set aside veggies and mix the sauce in a bowl. Preheat oven to 400 degrees or so. Take the meat off after it is at preferred cooking. Let it rest and cool a bit, then slice it into thinnish pieces. Throw the meat into a bowl and mix the sauce in. It should just coat it slightly as to not overpower everything else. Then mix the veggies in. Put this mound of goodness into the pan mentioned earlier. Layer cheese on top to cover the top then stick it in the oven for 5-10 minutes to melt the cheese. Slap that into a hoagie roll and voila!
