I watched Project Nim last weekend, and it broke my heart, because I’ve chosen to be spoiled by fiction and happy endings all my life.

The documentary is basically the reality version of Plant of the Apes, following the life of a chimp who was taken in and taught sign language, only to abandon and release him back into the chimp world. Since it’s not a blockbuster, the chimps didn’t stand up and say “NO!” and fight back (even though I was half expecting it and wanted it to happen).

It’s definitely worth a watch — there is a strong story, with antagonists that you will hate, and protagonists that you hope will come back into Nim’s life… For any documentary beginners who want to ease into the genre in an attempt to seem more mature, Project Nim is a good option :)
