I update this series every Tuesday evening, 9pm-10pm (UK Time)

{Part 1} // {Part 21} {Part 22} {Part 23}

Yesterday, the Wizarding World welcomed the season with the Summer Spell Ministry Gala, a spectacular beneficent ball sponsored by the Daily Prophet. It was an evening for dancing, drinking and, for our Saviour, coming out of the closet, apparently.

After his impeccable speech, which will be reprised on the WWN at 5pm tomorrow, before Witching Hour, Mr. Potter retreated briefly to the VIP table to chat with several acquaintances from Hogwarts, but soon was nowhere to be seen. One of the many photographers present during the event got this unbelievable snap in the gardens of the Shacklebolt Manor.

If you’re a fan of Mr. Potter, it’s probably old news that he has not dated publicly at all for the past two years, so to say it comes as a surprise he was caught kissing a man would be an understatement. He never fails to surprise us!

Many of you are probably thinking the man in question is a much more pressing matter than the fact Potter decided to date a wizard, right?

Draco Malfoy, only heir to the family fortune, has been absent from the news since the Great Trials, having only recently returned from France with a Potions Master’s degree from the famous La Voisin Institute. We have information he’s currently training at St. Mungo’s to become a certified Healer.

“It’s not just his family’s history and bad name,” said our source, a school mate from class of 91’. “Potter and Malfoy used to fight all the time when we were in school! I just don’t get how you go from that to kissing in public… it’s mad.”

Well, we couldn’t agree more. But the Wizarding World can rest assured that, no matter the repercussions of last night, we’ll be here to keep you updated as we have been doing since 1743.

At the closing of this edition, Draco Malfoy has yet to reply to our letters and Mr. Potter’s spokesperson sent a brief “no comment” official note.

ROMAN PUNISHMENT
  • Rome: Do you know the punishment for a slave who strikes a Roman citizen?
  • Germania, Chibi Prussia, Chibitalia and Chibimano: *raise their hands*
  • Rome: OK, you, you had your hand up first.
  • Germania: Death by torture!
  • Rome: Nooo. You?
  • Prussia: Crucifixion!
  • Rome: Wrong! You?
  • Romano: They shove a living snake up your arse!
  • Rome: Whew, ahh. No, but that's very creative!
  • Germania: They send you to the lions!
  • Rome: Right!
  • Italy: No!
  • Rome: Whaddaya mean, no? He was right! They send you to the lions!

WWII Firearms in Iraq Part 2

Part 1 // Part 3

In the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent occupation by American forces, history wormed its way into the hands of insurgents, who used whatever weapons they could lay hands on to fight the invaders. It was not uncommon to find firearms better suited for the museum than the battlefield.

PPSh-41. The Soviet Union’s primary submachine gun of World War II. With a rate of fire up to 1000 rpm, the PPSh gave Soviet soldiers volumes of firepower that German soldiers couldn’t compete with. Some six million PPSh’s were manufactured by the USSR between 1941-1947, and China made several million more, making the PPSh one of the world’s most produced firearms. No wonder it can be found in most conflicts.

TACTICAL.

With 1000 rpm, you can really saturate a room.

SQUAD UP.

StG-44. The world’s first assault rifle, the Stg-44 was the pinnacle of German firearms technology at the time. The StG-44 had a rocky start, firearms designers forced to call it a submachine gun in order to thwart Hitler, who did not care for the kurz bullet concept and only wanted more SMGs. However, when Hitler finally saw the StG-44 in action (under the guise of MP44) he gave his consent for its full manufacture and christened it the “Sturmgewehr:” storm rifle. Although the StG-44 could not turn the tide of battle, it was the basis for every combat rifle today.

This could be in 1991 or 2003.

Photographic quality was kind of in a nebulous area around those time periods.

MG42. A true general purpose machine gun, the MG42 was one of the outstanding weapons of the war, with proven reliability, durability, simplicity and ease of manufacture. To this day the MG42 sees service as the MG3, and is virtually unchanged.

MG42 with a M1919, RPK, SG-43 and PPSh.

MP40. Of course.

Wz. 35. If I’m not mistaken, this is THE Wz. 35; a Polish anti-tank rifle that was so secret that until mobilization in 1939, the combat-ready rifles were held in closed crates enigmatically marked: “Do not open! Surveillance equipment!” Unlike other anti-materiel rifles of the time, the Wz. 35 did not use an armor-piercing bullet with a hard core, but rather a lead core, full metal jacket bullet. Due to the high muzzle velocity this was effective even under shallow angles, as instead of ricocheting, the bullet would “stick” to the armor and punch a roughly 20 mm diameter hole.

Less than 10 examples of the Wz. 35 still exist, making this an extremely rare and valuable firearm to both collectors and museums.

Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday that dates back to Pre Hispanic times, yes, before the Spanish conquest.

Once a year the Aztecs held a festival celebrating the death of their ancestors, while honoring the goddess Mictecacihuatl, Queen of the Underworld, or Lady of the Dead. The Aztecs believed that the deceased preferred to be celebrated, rather than mourned, so during the festival they first honored los angelitos, the deceased children, then those who passed away as adults.

After the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs in 1521, they tried to make the Aztecs adopt their Catholic beliefs. They didn’t understand the Aztec belief system and didn’t try to. As Catholics, they thought that the Aztecs were pagan barbarians and tried their best to squash the old Aztec rituals and fully convert the indigenous people over to their Catholic beliefs… but they failed. Spanish conquerors tried to vanish it, that’s why now it’s mixed with some catholic rituals as well.

With time, this holiday reached other parts of the world, but it’s Mexican. Don’t forget that.

Every part of the country celebrates in a different way, but with the same purpose.

In Mexico people put an Ofrenda, that is like a altar with a photograph of your deceased loved ones, with food, candy, drinks, and everything that the dead relatives enjoyed in life. Also, some people go to cemetery and put their Ofrendas there, they spend the night by the side on the graves, celebrating and remembering their deceased loved ones.

Día de Muertos is a celebration, a party, a fiesta, is not something sad or morbid, is a day to remember our loved ones with a smile.

We even have these sugar skull with our names on it, we have calaveritas, which are short poems with comical purpose about how we, the living ones, are going to die. We don’t see Death as something solemn and serious.

Día de Muertos allows the dead to live again.

Day of the Dead is important, very, for us Mexicans. I dare to say that is the most important holiday here, is part of our History, even is part of the UNESCO intangible cultural world.

Here are some important facts about Día de muertos:

  • Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is on November 2. We celebrate also November 1, usually dedicated to children.
  • La Catrina is a representation of the Death as an elegant lady. The original image was made by José Guadalupe Posada, then included by Diego Rivera in his “Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central” painting.

  • Although the Day of the Dead originated in Mexico it is also celebrated in other countries. Cities in the U.S. with large Mexican immigrant populations brought their traditions with them in joyous celebrations.
  • Pan de muerto is baked and eaten on the Day of the Dead. The bread is sweet and is often decorated with strips of dough resembling bone or shaped like a skull and decorated.

  • Sugar Skulls are used to decorate the ofrendas on Día de Muertos. These decorative skulls have the name of the deceased (or the alive as joke) on the forehead and are decorated with stripes, dots and swirls of icing to enhance the features of the skulls.

  • Papel picado, often used to decorate Ofrendas, is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. It is considered a Mexican folk art.

A proper Ofrenda has to have:

  • Candles, to guide the way back to the world of the living.
  • Papel picado.
  • Cempasúchil flowers or marigolds, the smell helps our visitors to keep going.
  • Salt.
  • Water, because when they arrive, they’re tired.
  • A cross made of quicklime or cempasúchil flowers, it also guides the way.
  • A religious image, it could be a saint, the Virgin Mary, etc. (if you’re not Catholic, it’s not really necessary)
  • Copal/Incense, the smell guides the deceased ones on their way back.
  • Fruits, like apples, plums, bananas, pumpkins, sweet potatos, sugar canes, jicamas, tangerines, oranges, etc. These are seasonal mexican fruits, so, you can replace them with the deceased ones favorite fruits.
  • Sugar skulls and other candies specifically made for Día de Muertos. (Like Calabaza en tacha, calaveritas de chocolate o amaranto)
  • Pan de Muerto.
  • A photograph of the deceased one(s) you’re dedicating your Ofrenda to.
  • Food and drinks.
  • Everything they enjoyed in life, like cigarettes or a toy or whatever.

what she says: i’m fine

what she means: in the year 2016, the chicago cubs, after a 108 year long drought, won the world series in one of the greatest game sevens in the history of the united states. after being down 3 games to 1, the chicago cubs came back to win game five, and then game six with a whopping 9 runs to 3, thanks in part to a historic grand slam by addison russel in the top of the third. finally reaching the tie-breaking, nail-biting, long-awaited game seven, the cubs took an early lead with a home run from dexter fowler on the fourth pitch of the game. not only was this the first ever leadoff home run in the 7th game of a world series, but dexter fowler was also the first black cubs player to play in a world series. during the majority of the game, the cubs maintained a solid lead until the eighth inning, when, much to the dismay of cubs fans all over the world, indians’ rajai davis hit a tying two run home run against aroldis chapman. suspecting the dreaded curse had returned, many cubs fans at this time were at a loss for words, preparing themselves for the all too familiar feeling of crushing defeat. however, a seventeen minute rain delay, perhaps heralded by The Baseball Gods themselves, gave the cubs a chance to regroup and take the lead in the 10th inning after an MVP winning double by ben zobrist and another single thanks to miguel montero. finally, in the bottom of the 10th, kris bryant, arguably the most handsome baseball player, made the last out, expertly fielding a ground ball to third-base and throwing true (even after slipping a little) to his boyfriend, anthony rizzo. the cubs beat the indians 8 to 7. previously, only five teams had ever won the world series after being down 3 games to 1 in the history of baseball (the first world series being in 1903), and the chicago cubs are now the 6th.
