Robert Mapplethorpe

Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Floral Park, Queens.

In 1973 the Light Gallery in New York City mounted his first solo gallery exhibition called ‘Polaroids’.

'I got that feeling in my stomach, it’s not a directly sexual one, it’s something more potent than that. I thought that if I could somehow bring that element into art, if I could somehow retail that feeling, I would be doing something that was uniquely my own’
