Ajin S2 E10- Tosaki & Kei - Speculations

[ Surprisingly- Spoilers!]

In the wake of Episode 9 and the anticipated wait for Episode 10 of Ajin: Demi Human’s Second Season, it’s time to adress this paticular scene and what exactly is going to happen between Tosaki and Kei leading up to it:

Uh oh. Doesn‘t look good to you? Doesn‘t look good to me, either.

This scene was deemed important enough to be featured in the new OP, so I can‘t help but growing curious and worried at the same time what on earth is going on.

While I personally don‘t at all mind some interpersonal drama in shows -and in this case, it‘s bound to happen at some point with two people who are both quite stubborn in one house -the scene is still some reason to worry.

Because: Tosaki is certainly a flawed character, but he is not violent towards those close to him.

When he acts at his personal worst, it usually always is something along the lines of a threat to remind said person exactly what he is capable off, without ever following through with it. And that is all.

Let me repeat it: Tosaki IS flawed, but he is not domestically abusive.

He gives out empty threats, he lets out his anger in punches against the car window on his own side, he swears and tells people to shut up, but he never in any instance has gotten physically violent towards people he is close to/ on his own side. Never against Izumi. Neither has he raised a hand against Kei or Kou either. And of course, against the rest of their household (though since the others all consist of men who are trained either in combat or in the art of biophysical sass, I‘m leaving it at that.)

So, I‘m asking myself, what on earth happened for him to start shaking Kei and yelling at him?

Let’s go back:

Over the last few weeks, those two especially had to jump over their own shadow a multiple amount of times, deciding to ally with each other despite being former antagonists. Old threats turned into inside-jokes and banter, both made an effort to bond with each other in one way or the other.

And so far, that went unexpectedly well.

However, in Episode 10, Team Tosaki will finds themselves after a crushing defeat against Satou.

It‘s an episode that starts where they first and foremost have to pick themselves up, deprived of hope, deprived of members, grieving over Hirasawa-san and Manabe-san and Kuroki-san.

All while having to make new plans under pressure of time, not knowing how long it will be until either Satou and now even the government might find them.

And perhaps in this context, it makes sense that tensions are high, no matter how well functioning all of them usually are.

So what happened?

I believe Kei is still shocked to the bone over Hiraswa‘s death. Remember Satou telling him how it was his punishment he had to die?

Remember how Kei who is shown devoid of any emotion most of the time starts crying in shock when it happens in front of his eyes, when he can‘t bring up his Ghost, when he can‘t save Hirasawa? Remember in how much guilt and pain he finds himself in?

It breaks him.

When Tosaki saves them from the police car, Kei doesn’t even look up.

Later, as they’re driving away, he retreats to the back seat alone and doesn‘t speak a word with anyone.

I believe Kei will botte it up to a point where he falls back into his own mindset of not caring for anything or anyone as a sort of self-preservation, induced by the trauma he went through at the scene of the fight.

As self-destructive as it is, Kei doesn’t know how else to cope with the situation.

Perhaps he even believes he doesn‘t deserve a good life anymore after Hirasawa died fighting for him.

Perhaps he stops caring about the plan altogether.

Perhaps he doesn’t want to fight along any more.

And Tosaki tries to understand, but he can’t. He’s not intentionally vile, but he lacks social skills and can be easily irritated. He doesn’t know how to deal with a Kei that is even more unwilling and more apathic than he was before, he doesn’t know how to deal with teenagers, doesn’t know how to deal with posttraumatic stress.

Note how Kei doesn’t fight back. In fact, he does not look at Tosaki at all. (Unlike Nakano, who shows us comedy gold in the background, once again. “Aha..ha…Don‘t drag me into this.“ *slinks away*)

This further emphasizes my theory that Kei withdraws extremely after Hirasawa’s death. Tosaki shakes him, angry, frustrated, trying to make him snap out of it and focus on the issue at hand.

(”This is not the time for you to slack off, Nagai!”)

But Kei is not slacking off. Kei simply doesn’t know how to cope with the situation and he is not going to ask for help, either, wanting to come to terms with it on his own. But will he manage?

Oh my. With Episode 10 , we are sure in for a bit of drama.

But let‘s hope that Team Tosaki manages to resolve it, and things become alright between Tosaki and Kei.

After all, I‘d give a lot for more scenes like this one:

Thanks for answering the Mio and Yui friendship thing. Some of my favorite moments are when Mio called out "Yui!" as she tried to avoid being called out for the waving frog in their storage room and when Mio actually verbally says (in her head) that they wouldn't have been able to experience chatting it up with the other bands and performing in their first live if it weren't for Yui, Ritsu, and Mugi being outgoing and putting HTT out there. And of course the whole ribbon-tying stint.

(still about Yui and Mio) When Mio tells Azusa not to bombard Yui’s brain with new terms else she will overheat or something. It’s nice to see how close they have gotten at that point. It also illustrates how Mio more or less knows how to deal with Yui when it comes to teaching her as she has with the guitar and math. It’s that kind of sensitivity that is overlooked.

follow up to my last Yui Mio thing about Mio warning Azusa. I also love when responds with physical contact when Yui asks her to make the same sound she made when the cold bass touched her thighs. It really shows the growth of their friendship from calling her “Hirasawa-san” to her actually being comfortable enough around her to be like “no way.” HAHA you don’t need to respond to these, but I just appreciate that you appreciate the Yui-Mio interactions. And thank you for answering at length.

I LOVE YOU, YUI-MIO FRIENDSHIP ANON and OF COUUURSEEE I’m gonna respond to these

Aaaah, like with Yui and Mio’s friendship, after their first year, there’s just so many little things and small moments that just speak volumes on the bond their share and their understanding one another, the Azusa example of Mio knowing Yui’s brain can only take in small doses at one time.

The little manga moments when Mio calls Yui to complain about Ritsu and keeps her up UNTIL LIKE 2 IN THE MORNING are also gifts.

Actually, Yui and Mio make a LOT of physical contact. I was looking through the college manga real quick int he beginning chapters, and when the Fab Four are checking out the college light music club, Mio and Yui cling onto one another quite a bit before they’ve warmed up to the new club.

That, and the moments you mentioned, and a lOT others that are slipping my mind. PLUS. All the official art of them clinging onto one another.

Especially considering, as you said, how hesitant Mio was with Yui in the begining when she calls her ‘’Hirasawa-san.” Basically, B E A U T I F U L showcase of friendship all around.

OH.

OOOOOOOOOOOOH.

AND HOW COULD I FUCKING FORGET MY FAVORITE NON-CANON (BUT I TOTALLY PICTURE IT CANON IN MY HEAD) MOMENT FROM THE COME WITH ME CONCERT:

Hikasa’s (Mio) mic or voice or SOMETHING is giving out and she’s suuuuper off beat and tune with the rest of them, and Aki (Yui) notices SKIPS ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE STAGE TO CHECK ON HER (all the while is taking up the lead vocals of Tokimeki Sugar while Hikasa is figuring out her shit)

GIVES THE ‘ARE YOU OKAY?’ HEAD NOD

And then follows behind HIkasa until the end of the verse to make sure she’s a-okay.

TELL ME

TELL ME THAT ISN’T SOMETHING THAT WOUDL TOTALLY HAPPEN IN CANON. TRY TELLING ME YUI WOULDN’T NOT FOLLOW MIO AND MAKE SURE SHE’S OKAY AND INSTINCTIVELY KNOW TO TAKE OVER THE LEAD VOCALS A BIT

BECAUSE

MIO SURE AS HELL DID IT FOR HER:

And honestly, that was Mio’s intuition that Yui totally forgot to sing.

The cue wasn’t missed. Mio sang RIGHT on time. But she KNEW Yui has NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT TO SING. And covered for her. And shows yet again how much they understand each other.
