Today we learned that every bowl of soup we’ve ever eaten hasn’t been nearly as awesome as it could’ve been because there wasn’t Hungry Hippo Soup Roll wading in it. Bread is fantastic, but hippo-shaped bread is awesome!
Designer Hella Jongerius handcrafted these beautiful glazed porcelain bowls, each featuring a different 3D animal in the center. The series was commissioned by Nymphenburg, a Bavarian porcelain manufacturer that’s been creating high-quality artistic porcelain since the mid-18th century. Jongerius chose these particular animals from porcelain creations in the Nymphenburg archives. Each animal is complimented by a floral design or pattern, some of which have even been incorporated into the animals’ bodies. The floral patterns were taken from cups and saucers also from the Nymphenburg archives.
their arrival from the Calcutta Zoo in 1940, a pair of African river

Rube and Rubie loved to devour watermelons and their method was quite a
spectacle, but perhaps their greatest legacy was their “power couple”
status. The pair produced 11 offspring together, and they are
immortalized today as two of the Zoo’s favorite costumed characters. Read Rube and Rubie’s full story HERE.
