Iran has the fastest rate of growth in scientific output of any country in the world. The Islamic Republic of Iran now ranks among the top ten countries worldwide in stem cell and cloning research; it ranks among the top twenty countries in chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics, medicine, and nanotechnology. In the nuclear field, too, progress has been impressive. And investment in the sciences is translating into the development of high-tech industries, including biotechnology and nanotechnology. Most Westerners are unaware of the extent of progress in post-revolutionary Iran. As a result, they cling to the myth of the Islamic Republic’s illegitimacy, looking vainly for another Iranian revolution that, to say the least, is not on the horizon.
