Epic Movie (Re)Watch #37 - Agent Cody Banks

Spoilers below.

Have I seen it before: Yes.

Did I like it then: More or less.

Do I remember it: Sort of.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: DVD

1) Try not to judge me for owning this movie. Typically when I own a movie I never give it away. Ever.

2) If Agent Cody Banks was an integral part of your childhood, and you don’t want that part of your childhood ruined, I suggest you stop reading now.

You have been warned.

3) For some reason, the part of this movie I remember best is it’s theme music. I can hum that tune no problem for some reason.

4) So the beginning of the film involves Cody (Frankie Munez) saving a toddler who is trapped in a runaway car at the driver’s seat. Except, here’s the thing: you can clearly see that no one is in the car.

This is not the best example of that fact but still. And you can’t write it off as the kid being too short to be seen, he’s peeking out the window and his head comes over the dash.

5) Holy shit it’s The Mummy!

Also Ian McShane is in this film. Apparently.

6) So the plot of this film revolves around an evil organization trying to use nanobots to their nefarious ends. This is ALMOST the plot of Big Hero Six but, more accurately, it IS the plot of GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

Awesome.

7) Hey! It’s Keith David!

8) My nostalgia goggles may work better on this movie if I had watched more, “Lizzie McGuire,” as a kid and therefore got a bigger kick out of the presence of Hillary Duff. But in this movie she’s just kinda…Hillary Duff. And she’s barely that. She sort of just…exists as a plot point, I suppose.

9)

CIA Director [Keith David]: “And, according to my reports, (Cody is) quite the ladies man.”

(Cut to Cody NOT being a ladies man)

You’re the CIA and you don’t have enough intel to tell you that he sucks with women?

10) I DID remember that Angie Harmon was in this movie, but I did not realize that the filmmakers had her character…where such a stupid outfit.

(GIF originally posted by @tikikungfu)

No, seriously, take a second to consider that this film is trying to tell us a professional CIA agent would wear THIS outfit in a locker room full of hormonal teenage boys.

The ridiculous amount of cleavage and sitinct lack of a bra is enough, but only later did I realize…

WHY THE FUCK IS SHE SHOWING OFF HER BELLY BUTTON! SHE IS A GODDAMN CIA AGENT!

Not that I don’t love Angie Harmon, but come on…

11)

CIA Director (after Cody asks if having her be in all of Hilary Duff’s classes is a little creepy): “Creepy? We’re the CIA. It’s what we do.”

Damn straight.

12) I noted at this point in the film that it stars 15 and 16 year olds and is set in high school, but most high school students would never watch this film. It’s target audience is like twelve and under, so why not have the agents be middle school aged? They already act it.

13) Holy shit, Darrel Hammond’s in this movie too!

14) QUITE PLAYING, “It’s Getting Hot in Here,” EVERY TIME YOU INTRODUCE ANGIE HARMON TO A NEW CHARACTER!!!

15)

Cody (about Natalie [Hilary Duff]): “What if she doesn’t like me?”

Veronica [Angie Harmon]: “What’s not to like.”

Oh, so much…

16) OH COME ON! JESSICA HARMON IS IN THIS MOVIE!?!?

(GIF originally posted by @rocktheholygrail)

In all honesty I wouldn’t have noticed Jessica Harmon (or even recognized the name) a year ago but after a great stint on, “iZombie,” I’d notice her anywhere. Including Agent Cody Banks, apparently.

17) Hey look! The driving ed instructor is a racist stereotype!

He even has a ridiculous accent and tells CIA officials his immigration forms are in order. Because he can’t just be an asshole who happens to be Asian-American, he has to be a stereotype.

(GIF originally posted by @marshmallow-the-vampire-slayer)

18) So there’s a scene where CIA agents do Cody’s chores so he can focus on the mission, and I can’t help but thinking there’s some sort of national security issue which they should be focused on instead. How is it the CIA presented in this film is any good at their jobs?

19)

CIA Director: “Someone has got to teach this kid how to talk to girls.”

And so begins a whole scene (which you can watch right here) where a bunch of random characters try to teach Cody how to talk to girls, but not once does anyone say, “Just think of her as a person and not a desired object.”

20) Also WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT WITH THE SEXY HOLOGRAM TRYING TO TEACH CODY HOW TO TALK TO HER!?!?

There’s no two ways about this, the hologram thing is creepy (and I think kinda sexist, but whatever). Because she seems to be like in her 20s and the CIA has her coming on to either a 15 or 16 year old (at one point they call him 16 at another he says he’s 15), and even if you say she’s like 18 these guys are then eyeballing an eighteen year old.

Note: I just looked it up. Moneca Delain is credited as “Hologram Babe ” (yes, that’s her official character name) and at the time of this film’s release she was 22. So they’re trying to set up a 15 year old kid with a 22 year old “Hologram Babe.”

21) If I met a woman in real life who dressed like the filmmakers dress Veronica in this film, I’d be like, “good for you, dress in whatever way makes you happy.” But since I’m am more than familiar with the sexism in Hollywood (something which was worse 13 years ago than it is even now) I can’t help but think this is ridiculous.

She’s not dressing like that for a cover, only CIA agents see her, so what the hell? And maybe I’m wrong! Maybe Angie Harmon was like, “let’s put me in clothes like this,” in which case I’m like, “okay, sure yeah!” But I feel like since the only character they treat this way is a woman it just feels REALLY sexist to me.

Also why is it I’m talking more about sexism in Hollywood when I do a recap for Agent Cody Banks than when I did 24 James Bond movies?

22) And just like with 007, magic x-ray glasses don’t go beyond a woman’s underwear. And although it’s creepy when James Bond does it, it’s even creepier when 15 year old Cody Banks does it.

23) After Cody gives Natalie a necklace which works as a tracking device, I can’t help but think of this exchange from the newest Star Trek film…

Bones (to Spock, after he says they can track Uhura with a gift he gave her): “You gave your girlfriend a tracking device?”

Spock: “That was not my intent.”

24)

Arnold Vosloo (yes, I’m calling him Arnold Vosloo)(Right after Cody beats up some bullies): “His moves are straight out of the CIA handbook.”

Really!? You see a 15 year old kid perform yellow belt karate on a bunch of morons and you immediately think CIA?

25) And then Cody is taken off the case because his using these moves “blew his cover.”

(GIF originally posted by @theavengers)

26) Ah, a James Bond reference.

Speaker Voice (in the background): “Would the owner of a silver Aston Martin please move your car?”

27) Why are these two on segways?

They couldn’t walk? They’re literally just going to a desk. It had to be segways?

28)

Cody (to Natalie): “They pulled me off the job because I was getting too emotionally involved with my assignment.”

Uh, no. They pulled you off the job because - for some reason - using yellow belt karate on a bunch of jackasses blows your cover. Because…you know…plot.

29)

Ian McShane (yes, I’m calling him Ian McShane)(to Veronica): “Love that suit. No place for a gun in there, eh?”

You’re right, there’s not. SO WHY THE HELL IS SHE WEARING IT OTHER THAN TO BE SEXY FEMALE EYE CANDY!?

30) This film is Wilhelm Scream approved!

31)

Arnold Vosloo (after Cody blew him up with a bomb): “You messed up my haircut! See!? SEE!?”

(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF, please let me know].)

32) WTF!? MADONNA WAS AN EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ON THIS FILM!? SO WAS JASON ALEXANDER!?

I will say this: Agent Cody Banks is better than a handful of James Bond films (namely Die Another Day) BUT unless your nostalgia goggles are really good I don’t recommend watching this film. Or showing it to your children. I can understand people liking it, but honestly if you’re in the mood for some early 2000s Franke Muniz goodness put in Big Fat Liar instead.

Another hilarious interview completely about nipples.

(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBNLAo5DlLE)

anonymous asked:

How would the boys comfort their lover during a horror movie?

Shu - He would cuddle her, chuckling softly at her foolishness and making a few light teases.

Reiji - Turn off the TV and tell her to stop with such foolish behaviour.

Ayato - Comfort? He only knows how to tease the fuck out of you.

Laito - He is more scared than you, let’s be honest-

Kanato - He would frown softly, stating that he doesn’t prefer such a look on your face unless he brings that about.

Subaru - He would chuckle at her, before cuddling her and teasing her with his fingers on the back of her neck, asking as if it is an spirit. But, he would remind her that he is the only thing she needs to be scared of.

Kino - Eh, he probably would find her fear hilarious, filming it to watch for later.

Opening Weekend: Nov. 4The lowest-grossing openings for Disney-Marvel movies have so far been between $56 million and $58 million. Assuming "Doctor Strange," starring Benedict Cumberbatch, exceeds both "Big Hero 6" and "Ant-Man," DreamWorks Animation's "Trolls" may face an uphill battle for box office supremacy. Still, it looks like it's sizing up to be a tight race. From The Wrap.

The Christmas period is always a bit interesting at the box office, now on the opening weekend of DS - 4th November , these are the other films coming out:

Trolls (Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar)This hilarious film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant dance in their step…

Here the main contender is Trolls, but that’s mostly for kids, DS is not. Potential risk: around Christmas time a lot of kids go to the cinema, so that is a real competiton for DS and the fact that the parents will take the kids to Trolls, rather than watching DS themselves on a date night perhaps.

Now, what do we have on the following week? 11th November releases:

I don’t see a real contender here for DS in terms of blockbusters, so that is okay. So what happens the following week? 18th November:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  (Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol)Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary…

Oh, dear, oh dear, now here is the problem: Fantastic Beasts can slow down DS’s momentum, this will be definitely a huge hit. It is not for the same demographic, but it can definitely cause trouble at the Marvel box office.

How about the following week?

Bad Santa 2  (Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, Christina Hendricks) Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (Tony Cox), to…

Okay, not much happening here blockbuster-wise, some of the adult audience loving quality mainstream might opt for the Pitt- Cotillard spy movie or the Beatty-Baldwin romantic flick. The main contender for DS here is still Fantastic Beasts and Trolls, but lets not forget the box office draw of Dwayne Johnson either. Two days later this will get released:

Lion  (Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel, David Wenham)Follows a five-year-old Indian boy who, after a wrong train takes him thousands of miles away from home and family, survives many challenges before be…

Quality mainstream, not that much of a contender for DS.

Main contenders in December:

La La Land  (Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Finn Wittrock, J.K. Simmons)Tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends mee

Office Christmas Party  (Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, T.J. Miller, Kate McKinnon)In Office Christmas Party, when the CEO tries to close her hard-partying brother’s branch, he and his Chief Technical Officer must rally their co-work…

Holiday romantic movies, a bit ‘meh’ but they are popular and devide some of the audience of DS.

Now here comes the big trouble: 16th November

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ( Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna)Following the formation of the Galactic Empire, a rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.

This is when DS dollar takings can dip big time. Later on Assassin’s Creed with Fassy gets added to the releases, conternder there too

Assassin’s Creed  (Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons) Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael l Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Ag…

So potentially DS can do okay for a few weeks, but I think it will suffer with the release of Fantastic Beast first and then Star Wars. Marvel needs to be very focused on the opening weekend so that they make the most of DS’s run without much competition. They really have to have a cracking promo campaign form here on for them to be able to stay in competition as the Christmas box office race goes on, because it is not just the contending movies that can casues problems for them (all release data taken from www.movieinsider.com).

Filming Star Trek Beyond must have been so cool! :D
