SEPTEMBER 22: Joan Jett (1958-)

Happy birthday to Joan Jett, who turns 59 today! Although she has yet to label herself as either lesbian or bisexual, the rock ‘n’ roll legend has also been an incredibly influential wlw figure in music and mainstream culture for many years.

Joan Jett flipping off photographer Neil Zlozower while on tour in 1977 (x).

Joan Marie Larkin was born on September 22, 1958 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of three children born to a father who sold insurance and a mother who worked as a secretary. In 1967, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Rockville, Maryland where Joan attended Wheaton High School. She was gifted her first guitar when she was 14-years-old and tried to take lessons, but quit after the instructor kept trying to teach her folk songs. When the family moved once again to West Covina, California, the close proximity to Los Angeles allowed Joan to be that much closer to the world of music and glam rock that she was so attracted to.

Joan on stage at a Burgettstown, Pennsylvania concert on September 1, 2017 (x).

As a teenager, she co-founded the band The Runaways. Joan was the band’s rhythm guitarist, secondary singer, and co-writer for their songs. Along with Sandy West. Jackie Fox, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, The Runaways recorded a total of 5 albums before splitting up. Their break out song, “Cherry Bomb,” is still a rebellious girl anthem to this day. By 1979, Joan had struck out on her own and began pursuing a solo career. As a solo artist, she released the classic banger “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” but soon teamed up with The Blackhearts to form the band Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. In the 1990s, Joan faded from the spotlight and took on a producing role. However, she remained in the hearts of women musicians and as the Riot Grrl movement started up, she was dubbed the “original Riot Grrl” and the “godmother of punk.”

In recent times, Joan has become a politically charged figure who has advocated against war and intensive animal farming; she is an outspoken feminist, vegan, and on the topic of her sexuality, she has said: “I’m not saying no, I’m not saying yes, I’m saying believe what you want. Assume away—go ahead.”

I would like to thank @leaalda for making these amazing banners.

This is an effort to spread the word about all fan fiction writers in our little fandom. If you would like to be featured or nominate a writer, please contact me. Please reblog this post if you can and check out some of reflectivemuse (@i-am-the-fire57) work!

1. First things first, if someone wanted to read your stories where can they find them.

You can find my fics under the name reflectivemuse at AO3. I’ll also post excerpts on Tumblr as @i-am-the-fire57.

2. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Rochelle, from Seattle, WA. Thirty years old, ace, bipolar, and Asperger’s. Getting into reading and writing helped me understand real life social cues and communication better, but unless its blatant sarcastic humor can sometimes get lost in translation.

3. What do you never leave home without?

Phone, headphones, keys, and wallet that holds a bus pass and various cards together.

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I’m kind of both - I stay up late-ish but wind up awake between six and seven am anyway.

5. If you could live in any fictional world, which one would you choose and why?

Percy Jackson’s world, hands down. The mortality rate is a lot lower than other fictional realms I’m obsessed with, and there’s still plenty of humor on the road to danger.

6. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met.

None really yet - I’ve talked to YA authors Maggie Stiefvater and Cassandra Clare at book signings. I joked with Maggie about turning her first book Lament into a stage musical, and then with Cassie about how an alternate title for The Infernal Devices should be Downworld Abbey because of the proximity to the Downton Abbey time period - (she joked back that if she had her way Matthew Crawley would have been turned into a vampire)

7. What are some of your favorite movies/TV?

Supernatural, 12 Monkeys, Stargate SG-1, Humans, Riverdale, Nikita, Parks and Rec…I love musicals like 1776, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Grease, and Phantom of the Opera. The Captain America movies, especially Civil War. And, a curveball to my tastes - Runaway Jury.

8. What are some of your favorite bands/musicians?

I like various forms of metal - symphonic like Nightwish/Within Temptation, alternative such as Halestorm (I got my tumblr username from one of their songs.) I survived high school on punk-pop music, going to Green Day/Jimmy Eat World concerts. For pop, I eat up anything by Ryan Star.

How to be a College Freshman

It’s almost back-to-school season, and that means college is right around the corner. Here are a few tips from a rising sophomore on how to survive your first semester.

 On packing:

 1.     Bring your clothes. Not just sweatpants and a t-shirt (although those are important too) Bring a few business pieces (even if you’re a freshman, you never know what could happen). Bring a few party formal pieces, and some regular party clothes as well. And don’t forget your workout clothes !

2.     A few things that are easily forgettable but necessary: dishes (TUPPERWARE,) cleaning supplies, rugs, stapler, lint roller, white out, multiple usb drives, sunglasses

3.     Get to know your roommates. If you haven’t already talked to them before moving in, make sure you get to know them when the time comes. You don’t have to be best friends, but you do have to live together. Go out to dinner or something, it’s a nice way to get to know them.

 On classes:

 1.     Try to get to know the majority of your teachers, especially the ones that can help you out with recommendations. Going to office hours is the obvious choice, but whether you’re in a big or small class, sitting towards to the front always catches their attention. All you really have to do is ask/answer questions and you’re on their radar. The front can be a magical place.2

2.     Don’t overwhelm yourself. Look at the syllabus as soon as you get it. Write out all of the dates for projects, papers, midterms and tests down in your planner. It’s also helpful to put a giant calendar above your desk so you can see your month planned out. (It’s even better when you’re counting down the days until winter break.)

3.     Find your study spot. There’s going to be that one spot you study at where you are always productive. Go to it. Go to it every time.

4.     Don’t be afraid to find loopholes in course materials, requirements and such. It could be the difference between an A and a B (trust me, ok).

5.     You don’t have to have friends in every class, but it’s good to know someone (and have their number) in case you’re absent.

6.     Make sure you print out your stuff in advance. If not, something is guaranteed to go wrong.

7.     Check blackboard daily. This is important. Check it for assignments, homework, and details on coursework before you email your professor. Check it for grades, too.

8.     Ok now this tip can be risky depending on the class, but after my first semester, I found that I wasted money on textbooks I barely used! Here’s my tip: take a look at the book requirements, read the course’s daily schedule. Are there readings/ assignments from the readings involved? If not, next, check for e-books. That way you don’t have to buy the textbook, but should you need it at any point during the class, you can purchase the e-book or just fish out the money to get it. But if you buy it from the start and don’t use it, the value depreciates no matter what. You could also rent them, if that helps.

On being in a new place:

 1.     Explore ! Go out around the city (or town) and see what it has to offer. Art museums, plays, concerts and music festivals are always a good idea. So are cool libraries and coffee shops.

 On scheduling:

1.     8 ams are never a good idea. It doesn’t matter if you started high school even earlier. Don’t do it to yourself. But if you are a morning person, 9/10 is always good. Especially if you were studying the night before. You’ll thank yourself later.

2.     Choose classes that you’re interested in, but also make sure you see the bigger picture. Don’t take your easy classes first just to struggle later.

3.     Space it out accordingly. Don’t go for organic chem, political science and physics back to back to back. You WILL have tests on the same day, give yourself a break in between.

 On activities:

1.     Do NOT be in that group that travels in packs. You won’t even talk to 80% of those people by the end of the year anyway. It’s better to make a few good friends than look like a lost freshman in a tour group.

2.     Never go to a party alone. Never go with someone you don’t trust. Or just never go. 90% are gross, anyway

3.     Honestly, you can pretty much do anything you want. Don’t quote me though.

That’s all for now, folks. Be great. More to come later.  xx

I was in high school during the early 90s. It was the height of the grunge era, but me, I spent most of that time obsessed with Queen. I taped the Concert for Life off of MTV in 1992, and spent that summer literally watching at least part of it every single day. George Michael was, without a doubt, the #1 highlight of the whole concert. He did three songs with Queen, culminating in this, a contender for best live musical performance I’ve ever seen, period. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched/listened to this version of the song. Possibly even more than the original Queen version.

George Michael was an absolute pop music superstar.

Hey Taylor,

My name is Kaila and I am 22 years old.

We have never met before or talked but I am hoping one day that will change.

Ever since I discovered Fearless I have been a huuuuuuuge fan of yours. I was just going into high school. I listen to your music every single day.

I have been to 3 of your concerts - Speak Now tour, RED tour, and 1989 tour. All in Toronto. I am hoping for the Reputation tour I’ll be able to travel to different cities to see you and hopefully go to more than 1 show.

I told my conductor the music sucked so he changed the music. I didn't have to play the same note for the whole concert we had. Viola player 1 Nerds in the other sections 0

i totally dig that your conductor listened to you

in the real world, that’s not always gonna happen. sometimes you gotta just buck up. trust me i played viola for 6 years, i know we usually get a butt load of repetition and borint stuff but sometimes you just gotta deal with it, ya feel? because even in high school my directors didn’t care if we bitched. if they said we were playing it, we were playing it.
