‘Monster 2013′ from Hidden Fortress Press

This here is the comix anthology ‘Monster’ and it is worth a buy on production values alone.  3 separate leetle books, bound together by a cool slipcase, and each of the covers are that style of printing where that shit is like stamped into the paper so it has all this texture and shit.  Its not lithograph, right?  Certainly not die cut.  I totally can remember the name of that printing style but I just can’t remember it right now.  This is ‘Monster 2013′ and its got over 200 pages of comix from all sorts of folks like Marc Bell, Kieth Jones, Michael DeForge, Lale Westvind, the list goes on.

The subject matter is pretty loosely themed around horror motifs and the stories usually number a few pages in length.  Its a real showcase of heavy hitter talent, probably the dude just put this book together to show off how many cool friends he has.  Whatever.  Not all the stories in this book are as strong as the previous issue of monster but there’s still enough in it to make it a great buy.  Seriously, if little self published books make you cream your jeans like they do me then you’ll want to get this one.  I can’t believe there’s still copies available up on their website when the print run was only 400 copies.  All you hipsters cant afford a $30 book?  Gotta stop giving your buddies deals on molly and start selling it for profit, kids.

First time I ever did LSD I bought it from a kid who worked at McDonalds.  We went through the drive through and ordered some fries and at the bottom of the bag were a few little tabs of LSD.  We hung out a bit and tripped a bit and then I went home and looked at a Frank comic and hoped the drugs would make the drawings come to life.

The drawings did not come to life but the love affair with hallucinogens happened nonetheless.  2 years later I had a jar of liquid in my freezer and we’d put two dabs on a cookie every morning and hit the streets.  I remember walking down an alley and this one dude wanted to look all cool and intense and did this weird dance and started talking about how cool the movie Angel Heart is, that one that got Lisa Bonet in trouble with the Cos for showing her boobs.  And now here we are, years later, and have discovered that the Cos is a rapist.  Mr Family values, man.

Buy this book, its only 30 fucking bucks and its a fucking slice of history.  So many great cartoonists bunched together in a real tasty package.  This is how comix anthologies should work: http://hiddenfortress.storenvy.com/products/2855409-monster-2013
