1/13/15 UpD8: Mutha. Fuckin. Shenanigans.

Sweet, confusing, and funny…In other words, your typical Homestuck upd8. Reaction and speculation below!:

Bahahaha! Karkat in full ‘rant’ mode everyone! Something we haven’t seen for a while.

External image

John is just so smug in this panel. That’s the smile of a skilled troll, right there. Yeesh, we haven’t had John and Karkat interactions since Cascade. And it’s as hilarious as ever!

External image

And John, like I have on this blog so many time, wonders about the timeline implications. I feel you, I really feel you.

External image

Aw…Remember what happened last time John talked about Vriska?

External image

And yet here he is, saying he’ll see her again in three years (from her perspective). And he’s affectionately petting her on the head! It’s adorable!

External image

Tough luck, Karkat! XD. I wonder where John is going off to now? Back to Lowas and Roxy?

External image

Oh, Vriska’s awake already! I don’t think she’s going anywhere anytime soon…

Also, Karkat’s RAGE in the background is a callback:

External image

But hey, this means the Scourge Sister are officially back! This can only bode well for the meteor crew. (Hussie I have only one request: Please show us some Vriska and Rose interaction I think they would have an amazing dynamic).

Kanaya sums up Homestuck for most readers. Also, I think this was a callback. Or at least a small reference:

Oh Sollux, never change! But this is the first time we’ve seen him with his shades since he went blind in the original timeline. Too bad he’s going to half-kill himself getting the meteor to the Green Sun in a few minutes here…I know the previous few panels were callbacks, but I can’t find the relevant ones right now. But I can find the relevant one for THIS one:

External image

But this upd8 felt refreshing! We had John and Karkat going at it, John making it clear he still possess affection for Vriska, and Sollux wearing his shades for the first time in forever. It feels like the good kind of buildup. I’m worried about the wallet though…

I wanted to address something. People are saying that it seems too ‘obvious’ for the ‘leader’ of the meteor crew to be Vriska. They are even going so far as to say it’s Equius(!!!).

Let’s examine Jane’s dialogue, shall we?

External image

I’ve mentioned it in previous posts, but Vriska is DRIVEN. And unstoppable. In the original timeline, not even DEATH stopped her:

And even before that:

Next:

This was the last bit of dialogue to refer to the leader. The part with the ‘horse puns’ referred to the conflict that occurred after Jane and Jade ended up in the dreambubbles. Vriska’s death has just been retconned. Along with the luck references, it’s strongly hinted that it’s her.

At the very beginning of the description, Jane says:

External image

I highlighted the line because the implication I get from this is that the ‘leader’ was on the meteor with the others. Along with ‘lone interloper’, which means it’s only one unexpected arrival. Combined with the ‘revisionism’, it means it probably can’t be anyone but Vriska. The presence of another person would bring up the question: What happened to Vriska in the new timeline? She’s the only known ‘anomaly’ on the meteor as of the retcons. Occam’s Razor says to me the ‘leader’ has to be Vriska, because it brings up too many questions otherwise.

People doubt Vriska potential for ‘leadership’, but truth is, she’s always shown the potential. As stated above, she’s very driven, and pushes those around her to share that drive. On the meteor during A5A2, Karkat had given up, but Vriska kept right on going!

But more then that, the three years on the meteor will give her the chance to develop two traits that have been in the background for her, but that will assist her: Compassion and loyalty.

The compassion is easy to find. Like when she was willing to listen to Feferi’s problems in Alterniabound:

Or on multiple occasions with John:

The loyalty seems unusual, given the Team Charge incident. Except there was an outside factor in that incident: Doc Scratch. Vriska makes it clear after paralyzing Tavros that she never originally intended to do it:

External image

People like to downplay Scratch’s role in this. When Aradia summoned her ghosts, it’s Scratch, not Vriska, who suggests the idea of killing Aradia. If you examine the conversation closely, you can see how he manipulates her into doing it:

External image

And a little later in the conversation, Vriska implies Scratch pulled a similar thing before, leading to her paralyzing Tavros:

External image

Remember, Vriska’s lusus demanded that she regular feed her fellow trolls to it. And Vriska had specifically designated Aradia, Tavros, and the others as ‘off-limits.’ That means at some point, she got fond enough of them (especially Tavros who she could control unlike Aradia) to not try making them spider food. That also implies significant emotional investment. When the smoke cleared, she was likely mortified.

And it left her with a hell of a guilt complex. At a couple points, she all but begs those she wronged to just be mad and blame her for it already:

External image

I’m getting off track here. Anyway, in Alterniabound, it’s clear no one is going to give her the time of the day. Yet despite that, she makes it clear that part of the reason she’s going off to fight Noir is to help her friends:

External image

Vriska had been treated like crap (justified or not) by the other trolls, and yet she still wanted to be a hero for them. She still cares for them, even if they don’t completely care for her anymore. Her expression after Jack comes back with Karkat and Terezi’s bodies in the doomed timeline says it all:

External image

External image

If that’s not convincing enough, here’s a couple other things. 1. Vriska is a Scorpio personality. A defining virtue of the Scorpio sign is loyalty. And 2. there was THIS quote:

External image

Pride is something we are very familiar with in Vriska, but I think it’s notable that ‘loyalty’ was also specifically cited as a defining trait of troll blue bloods.

Which makes Vriska’s death by being stabbed in the back in the original timeline all the more ironic…

Anyway, between her drive, loyalty, and compassion, Vriska has all the makings of a fantastic leader, one who is ideal for helping the meteor crew pull through the three year trip without descending into the apathy they developed in the old timeline.

Phew, that grew longer than I intended. Anyway, ‘til the next upd8!
