hex nuts

Might be rebuilding/refurbishing an old beater sword of mine and making a Wonder Woman sword. With the shortened blade and longer hilt it will have proportions similar to the Godkiller sword from the movie. Functionally it would be something like a euro version of a wakizashi–a short sword with a hilt that can accommodate a two-handed grip. I’m not quite sure what the point of balance will be, but I’m excited to experiment with it.

I’ll probably modernize the construction a bit and once the pommel is put in place I might weld it rather than peening or using a hex nut.

Stay tuned!

Forever and Always

Word Total: 1366…

Request: Anonymos asked: Can you do an imagine with either poe or cassian (either work) to the song forever and always by parachute?

Pairing:  Cassian x Reader

Cassian marched around the open hangar, his hands on his hips looking down at the ground. From time to time, almost someone crashed on him. At small lapses, he looked up trying to find that familiar X-Wing.

X-Wings landed with difficulty on the landing zone in front of him. Some of them were missing a wing, others do not make it; once they touched the ground it went into flames. Flames and a tall column of smoke were an indication that once they existed.

People ran around with buckets of water, shouts were heard everywhere. He grimaced at the gruesome sight, it was selfish for his part thanking that it was not her X-Wing that had burned out, disappeared into thin air.

He cringed as a strong smell reached his nostrils, Cassian looked down and saw fuel. It ran from dented X-Wing to his feet. Cassian saw that the medical staff opened the cabin and extracted two people from it.

He glanced at the sky if that familiar X-Wing appeared in the sky. With exasperation, he walked to where personnel that assessed the damage of the last landing X-Wing.

“Y/N was a Commander, there is a 74% she is still out there─”

Cassian stopped in his tracks and glanced back at the tall droid. “Bad news travel fast” K2 added, he only nodded and continue to walk to the small group of men gathered in a sole X-Wing. “She was brave─”

“Don’t talk about her like she was dead, she is still alive─”

“Captain”

Cassian stopped and looked to his left. “Can you come with me?” A young woman asked him. Cassian raised an eyebrow and looked back at K2. “It’s urgent, your fiancé she─”

He walked behind the young woman. “Where is she?” Cassian inquired to the young woman, but she kept directing him through a series of white halls. “I asked how she is. Is she─” he felt the dread of thinking of that possibility he gulped. “Dead?”

“I am sorry, Captain Andor. But I can’t say anything about the state of your fiancé, I was merely sent to fetch you” the young lady said with a sympathetic smile. “Her doctor is here,” She said pointing at the door behind her.

“Thank you”

The young woman only nodded and disappeared through the maze of white halls.

“Captain Andor,” A robotic voice said, Cassian looked up to see a medical droid. “I must tell you, there is terrible news─” Cassian closed his eyes as a buzz filled his ears, he didn’t care what the droid was saying he just wanted to see her. Cassian felt like he was force into a body a water, he couldn’t breathe; he could feel a pressure on his ears… the electronic voice of the medical droid sounded yards away from him. He felt a coldness invade his whole body.

“This way” Cassian felt a metallic hand on his shoulder. A droid nurse was directing him to another room─ he didn’t bother to ask what was wrong, he could feel it in every cell in his body.

Double crystal doors opened as he stood in front of them. There in a single bed laid his Y/N. He could see her unmoving form. “I’ll leave you alone” the droid announced, Cassian didn’t say anything he just stood there. He didn’t know what to do.

He took tentative steps, he could hear her weakening heartbeat as the machine beeped softly. Cassian sat on the chair by her side. Carefully, he took one of her hands. It was cold as ice, her skin was pale; he could see her veins…

“Cassian, you’re here” Y/N’s voice was merely a whisper, Cassian looked up. Her face was pale, her lips were chapped they lack their red characteristic color. Her eyes… they looked dull, her eyelids looked almost transparent… he only nodded smiling at her. He raised her hand and softly kissed it.

“I needed to see you”

“I looked hideous, don’t I?” Y/N joked, Cassian shook his head and kept smiling at her. “Where is K2?” She started to cough, Cassian stood up but Y/N put his hand on his chest. “I am fine”

“Its outside” Cassian sat down and softly rubbed her knuckles. Y/N nodded, condensation covered the breathing mask that covered her mouth.

“How many kids do you want to have?” Y/N asked after a few minutes of silence. “My mother say she wanted a lot of grandchildren” slowly she removed the breathing mask from her face and turned to smile at him. “She feels lonely, I guess”

Cassian bit his lip and chuckled, he moved his head side to side─ he looked down at the immaculate white floor ─Of course Y/N’s mother wanted to have a lot of grandchildren. Y/N was their only child─ and to think that there were so far away to say goodbye to her. “I don’t know, how many can you handle?”

“If there were as wild as me, about two” Y/N said, she grimaced and closed her eyes; Y/N took a deep breath. “If there were like you, probably one” she chuckled, tears run down her cheeks; the beeping on her monitor increased, Cassian looked at her, Y/N only held his hand gripping it tightly, as the machine beeped louder. “We could live in that hillside, where you proposed to me,” she said in a low tone holding his hand, she finally lessened her grip on his hand. “We could see the dawn every day” Y/N took the breathing mask again and inhaled.

Cassian nodded, remembering when he proposed to her. In that hillside, on her native planet. He had planned everything to perfection. The way the petals had to fall from the tall tree above her, the moon as their witness… but surely K2 had to ruin everything murmuring─ more like stating that Y/N percent of rejection was off 85%. “Y/N─” But Y/N just keep talking about how perfect her family would be, how when their children grew up and they will join the rebellion.

He only nodded when she asked him a question…

“I’ll be right back” Y/N looked at Cassian, he quickly exited the room─ before she could ask him where he was going. She sighed and closed her eyes─ maybe he was afraid of all of this. Y/N was about to reach for the emergency button when the door opened. Mon Mothma stood there with a sympathetic smile on her face looking at her then at Cassian was catching his breath beside her.

“I think we should get marry now” He stated between breaths holding his stomach.

Y/N eyes widen, “But─” She was about to protest, Cassian’s face had a crestfallen look. She closed her mouth and only nodded. “But the rings”

Cassian cursed under his breath, Mon Mothma glanced at him. “I am so─”

“This will do” K2 arrived, on its metallic palm the droid had a couple of hex nuts. Cassian nodded and retrieve the make-shift wedding rings.

“Very well we began then…” Y/N sat on the bed holding Cassian’s hand as Mon Mothma started to talk. She gripped tightly Cassian’s hand as the rhythm of her heart started to beep loudly. Now the intermittent pain was becoming permanent.

“I want you forever, forever and always. Through the good and the bad and the ugly. We’ll grow old together and always remember. Whether happy or sad or whatever. We’ll still love each other, forever and always. Forever and always, forever and always”

Cassian ended his bows, Y/N smiled at him, even smiling at him hurt. She was feeling cold and tired, her brain tried to come up with beautiful words to say to him─ but none of them could describe how she felt about him.

She finished the vows but the beeps were getting too slow. Her voice is almost too low. Almost like a breeze whispering to your ear as cold air engulfed you in a cold summer night. And she says, “I love you forever, forever and always. Please just remember even if I’m not there. I’ll always love you, forever and always.”

Y/N’s hand went limp on Cassian’s hand. He put the small hex nut on her lithe finger. “Forever and always”

There’s something that just hit me in the showers.

Happy’s engagement ring is a hex nut, right ? Here how Happy describe a nut : “ Nuts have held the world together since the Industrial Revolution. In 100 years it will be the only thing left inside this box that is worth anything.

This is HUGE. this is toby saying “In 100 years, this will stll mean I love you and I want to be married to you” (or something like that).

and I only sees it, now.

I’m very slow sometimes.

Designing a Swivel-Lid

I had an idea for a salt cellar, but needed to know how to make a swivel-lid box.  I saw this one at a kitchen store.

It was $50!  I knew I could do better.  What I did like was the hidden swivel mechanism. A few designs that I came across involved drilling all the way through the lid, inserting a dowel or something, and then using a plug to conceal the hold.  I wanted my swivel-mechanism to be completely hidden.  I also don’t own a lathe, so it was going to have right angles.

While I was at it, why not make a bunch?

After miter keys and whatnot, it was time to cut open the boxes.

The idea I wanted to try involved an embedded hex nut in the lid, and a matching bolt embedded in the box.  I used my mortiser as a drill press, because I don’t own a real drill press yet.  By using a stop block I could get matching holes in the lid and box.

The hex nut went in first, with some epoxy around the edges to secure it.  I let it fully cure.

Meanwhile, I needed a second hex nut secured to the bolt with epoxy to keep it in its channel in the box.

The next day, I twisted the bolt into the hex nut in the lid.  I then put some epoxy in the hole in the box, and used my bench clamp to drive it straight in.

Somewhere in the process, I also added embedded magnets to snap the lid shut.  I liked that.

As these were going to be salt cellars, I only used butcher block oil/wax as a finish.  I know that all finishes, once fully cured, are food safe, but some people just want that peace of mind.

All ready to go!

DIY Braided Hex Nut Bracelet

External image

You’ll need:
- 3 strands of twine cut into one yard pieces
- 18 small brass hex nuts
- a bit of dexterity!

External image

Gather the 3 strands of twine and tie a knot at the top, leaving about 2 inches of slack. Start braiding. At about an inch of the way down, you’ll begin braiding in the nuts. Before you braid the far left strand over the middle strand, thread on a nut, push it against the base of the braid, and crossover. Depending on the thickness of the twine, you can wrap tape around the bottom tips to prevent the twine from fraying.

External image

Keep your thumb at the base of the braid, holding the nut in its place. Before you braid the far right strand over the middle, thread on another nut, push it against the base of the braid and crossover. Again, hold your thumb tightly against the base of the braid, keeping the nuts in place. Thread another nut onto the far left piece and crossover.

External image

Repeat the steps, by threading the rest of the nuts to the outer pieces of twine before they are crossed over. Thread, cross, thread, cross. Finish the bracelet with another inch of braided twine and a knot.

The bracelet should wrap around your wrist at least two or three times. Trim it to your liking.
