Spongebob Squarepants, a new musical based on the iconic Nickelodeon cartoon, is headed to Broadway’s Palace Theatre. Previews will begin on November 6 and an official opening scheduled for December 4.
In Spongebob Squarepants, stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts, lives hang in the balance, and just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

I cento passi (2000) – the true story of Sicilian political activist Peppino Impastato, killed by the mafia in 1978 for his overt opposition to the latter. Drama, biopic.
Io non ho paura (2003) – ten-year-old Michele, living in southern Italy in the 1970′s, discovers a hole in the ground where a boy is kept prisoner. Based on a famous novel by Niccolò Ammaniti. Drama, thriller.
Notte prima degli esami (2006) – Technically speaking not the best movie on this list, but still a must-see if you want to understand what the dreaded high school finals (a.k.a. la maturità) mean for Italian students. Comedy.
La ragazza del lago (2007) – the peace of a little town in northern Italy is disrupted when the body of a young woman is found dead on the lakeshore. Thriller, drama.
Il divo (2008) – the story of Giulio Andreotti, 7-times prime minister of Italy and a controversial figure. Drama, biopic. Great to get a glimpse of the complex world of Italian politics.
Gomorra (2008) – five stories dealing with the Camorra (a criminal organization mostly based in the Naples area) and its relations with the population. Thriller, noir. Probably not the best one to watch if you want to practise Italian, as most lines are delivered in Neapolitan (and are thus incomprehensible to many Italian speakers as well).
Baarìa (2009) – an autobiographic epic in three generations of the Sicilian village where film director Tornatore was born. There are two existing versions, one in Italian and the other in Sicilian. Drama, comedy. I love family sagas, and sobbed uncontrollably I can’t remember exactly at which point in the movie.
La prima cosa bella (2010) – after years of estrangement, Bruno finally goes back to his hometown to visit his dying mother, Anna. Alternating present-day narration and flashbacks, the movie follows the life of a mother and her two children and their strong, albeit problematic, bond. Comedic drama, you might be crying bittersweet tears by the end.
Benvenuti al sud (2010) – stereotypes from both northern and southern Italy meet in the delightful remake of the French movie Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis when Alberto, the manager of a postal service in northern Italy, is banished to Castellabate, obviously located in the South. Comedy.
Basilicata coast to coast (2010) – a music group and a journalist cross the region of Basilicata by foot to attend a music festival. Comedy, adventure.
Habemus papam (2011) – a cardinal is elected pope against his wishes, and needs the help of a therapist to overcome his terror. Half comedy, half drama.
Il capitale umano (2013) – on Christmas Eve, a waiter cycling home from working at a prestigious private school’s gala is hit by a car, whose driver flees, leaving the man close to death. Connected to the accident are two very different families. Drama, thriller.
La grande bellezza (2013) – aging socialite Jep Gambardella tries to find some meaning beyond the lavish display of empty riches plaguing his Roman nights spent between parties. Drama, comedy, won an Oscar when it came out. Chances are you’ll either love it or sleep through it (personally, I liked it quite a lot).
Smetto quando voglio (2014) – driven to despair by their precarious conditions, a group of underpaid (if paid at all) university researchers team up to produce a smart drug still not illegal in Italy to make a fast buck. The unlikely gang is surprisingly successful… Comedy, among the funniest I’ve seen recently.
Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot (2015) – an unlikely (anti)hero rises in the slums of Rome when thief Enzo Ceccotti acquires superpowers by falling into the river Tiber. Sci-fi, action, drama. Superhero movies meet Italian cinema, and it works better than anyone was expecting. Language might be an issue, since everyone is purposefully Very Much from Rome.
Non essere cattivo (2015) – a story of crime, drugs and attempted redemption in the outskirts of Rome. Action, drama. Luca Marinelli is one hell of an actor. Again, the language is more Roman than Italian.
La pazza gioia (2016) – professed countess (and notorious motor-mouth) Beatrice and frail, quiet Donatella (who was “born sad”) flee the psychiatric institution that hosts them. The odd pair will embark on a journey together, looking for fun, love, and – you guessed it – some happiness. Comedy-drama, manages to be hilarious and deeply moving at the same time.
Fuocoammare (2016) – a documentary capturing life on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis.
Perfetti sconosciuti (2016) – seven friends know each other like the back of their hand… or do they? What would happen if, as a playful game around the dinner table, they decided to share with the others every text, call and e-mail they get on their phone? Could they turn out to be total strangers? Witty and thought-provoking comedy with a number of twists.
Fai bei sogni (2016) – a boy struggles to come to terms with his mother’s death. Scenes from the protagonist’s childhood are intertwined with Others depicting his adult life. Drama. Ultimately, Valerio Mastandrea always manages to play someone with mommy issues somehow (he was also Bruno in La prima cosa bella). Drama.
The Last Jedi: In her final performance, Carrie Fisher restores hope for Leia Organa
Part 5 of EW’s ‘Star Wars’ cover story
Live fearlessly, live boldly, and even after you’re gone that strength and inspiration burns on.
After Carrie Fisher’s unexpected death in December, The Last Jedi will mark her final performance as Leia Organa — the Star Wars character who went from orphan to princess, to spy, to senator, and finally general of the Resistance.
She remains a light that will never go out in the galaxy.
“Her character to some degree or another has been defined by loss through this whole saga, starting with the loss of her home planet. She’s just taken hit after hit, and she’s borne it, and she focuses on moving forward and the task at hand,” says writer-director Rian Johnson.
No matter what grief or trauma Leia faced, she never wavered in her commitment to fighting for freedom in the galaxy, and her battle continues in The Last Jedi. Leia remains in charge of the scattershot Resistance movement, cut off from the Republic, whose leadership and capitol was annihilated in The Force Awakens.
Anyone who expected the Resistance to fill that void and maintain order would be mistaken. “No, no, no. Not at all,” Johnson says. “They’re a small band that’s now cut off, on its own, and hunted when the Republic is shattered. When the First Order did that hit, the Resistance is isolated, and they’re very, very vulnerable. That’s where we pick them up.”
While the galaxy teeters on takeover by the First Order, Leia is also dealing with personal grief, mourning the death of Han Solo – murdered at the hands of their son, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. The young man once known as Ben Solo has now fully fallen to the Dark Side, just as Darth Vader, Leia’s father, did a generation before.
“She’s suffered quite a bit,” Johnson adds. “While I was figuring out what her deal was going to be in this film, it’s one of the things I talked about with Carrie before I started writing: where the character would go.”
THE CUSTODIAN OF LEIA
That’s what Fisher often called herself. “She’s become me, and I’ve become her. Because it’s been a while,” Fisher told EW in 2015 before the release of The Force Awakens.
As she did in her own novels and memoirs, like Postcards from the Edge and Wishful Drinking, Fisher’s wry and brash performance as Leia allowed the character to face her hardships with a blaster-proof sense of humor and whatever the galactic version of chutzpah would be.
Although she won’t complete the saga (Lucasfilm says Episode IX is being rewritten out of respect for her passing), Leia’s impact will continue to reverberate.
Despite hardship, Leia always finds the hope in any given situation. This time, her story is entwined with Poe Dameron, the hotshot X-wing pilot played by Oscar Isaac. Their relationship is not just general and warrior.
They’re family. And in Star Wars, the notion of family goes far beyond blood relations.
“Poe is in some ways a surrogate son for Leia,” Isaac tells EW. “But also I think she sees in him the potential for a truly great leader of the Resistance and beyond.”
In The Last Jedi, a torch is being passed. It’s about the peril of meeting your heroes, facing down disappointment, and rising to fight nonetheless. Just as Luke Skywalker – reluctantly – may be passing on his knowledge of the Force to Rey, Leia is guiding Poe, encouraging him to look beyond the crosshairs in his cockpit. There are other ways to fight, other ways to lead.
“Poe’s arc is one of evolving from a heroic soldier to a seasoned leader, to see beyond the single-mindedness of winning the battle to the larger picture of the future of the galaxy,” Isaac says. “I think Leia knows she won’t be around forever and she, with tough love, wants to push Poe to be more than the badass pilot, to temper his heroic impulses with wisdom and clarity.”
There are also rivalries and alliances within the movement. Johnson isn’t ready to reveal what Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo’s role is in the story, but as a fellow commander in the Resistance she is likely to have a history with Leia Organa. The nature of it will be for the movie to reveal.
“The secrecy does have a purpose in that part of the fun with Laura’s character, with Admiral Holdo, is figuring out what her relationship is to everybody as you go along through the movie,” Johnson says.
“I don’t want to tip the hat too much, but I will say that the heat is immediately turned up on the Resistance,” Johnson says. “Everybody is put in a pressure cooker right away, and relationships crack and strain under that pressure. That was really interesting to me, the notion of putting this small army under a lot of external pressure and showing some of the results within the Resistance itself.”
THE UNWANTED FAREWELL
The storyline wasn’t changed after Fisher’s death, but Johnson says he hopes it will still be satisfying to the legion of Leia fans who see the character as a source of true-life inspiration in our world.
“There’s no way that we could’ve known this would’ve been the last Star Wars movie she would be in, so it’s not like we made the film thinking that we were bringing closure to the character,” Johnson says. “But watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to what she does in this movie.”
While Leia’s influence as a leader endures within the narrative of the Star Wars saga, Fisher also made a personal impact on the actors who will be carrying the franchise forward without her.
Everyone who worked on the film has a Carrie story, but the sweetest and most heartbreaking one belongs to Isaac:
“One of my favorite things that would happen from time to time on set would be when Carrie would sing old songs,” he says. “Whenever that would happen I would offer her my hand and we would waltz around the set – on a starship, in a Rebel base, on an alien planet, and she would sing and we would dance. So surreal and beautiful to think about now. For all of her delicious, wicked humor and fiery energy she also had such sweet grace. I miss her dearly.” (x)

The point is that all these people out here, looting, robbing, killing, they’re the people who wash your car, who pour your coffee, who take out your trash. And what happened the moment the lights went out? They showed their true faces. They showed how quickly they want to open up your rich boy veins and bathe in your blue blood! (…) Face it, kid. I love the
journey we take on stories. I
particularly love the journey we take with television. There’s really no medium
like this. The experience is over in a couple hours with a movie. We can control how quickly we read a book
(even if we have to wait for additional sequels). But television? Television is
a week to week story that spans years. Or at least it is if you watch live from
start to finish. Television can be a long and arduous journey. Full of ups and
downs. Great episodes and horribly bad ones. We walk the road with the characters in real
time. It’s a serious time investment and the hope is the story eventually
connects. That the threads the writers weave come together in the end and we
can see the full picture. "Lian
Yu" is one of those rare storytelling gifts that repays all the many years
this journey with Oliver Queen five years ago. We have walked each step with
him. We’ve rejoiced with Oliver in his moments of triumph.
We’ve grieved with him.
We threw things at him with every maddening
step, we’ve watched Oliver come back to life.
It hurt and he fought it for a
long time, but slowly Oliver began to learn how to live again. Instead of
shutting himself off, he chose to build a life filled with purpose
his way out of the dark and into the light that was always there, deep
It was all
leading somewhere. A destination, a choice, Oliver had to make. No matter how
far Oliver has come there is always a piece of him that remains on the
island… and on the boat. Oliver had to
return to Lian Yu, one last time, so he could finally let it go. So he could
finally come home.
story is fraught with triumph and tragedy. There is both in “Lian
Yu.” The great tragedy is once Oliver decides who he is, and is ready for
all that entails, he’s faced with an impossible choice and loses what he’s
spent years building.
Or did he?
Adrian Chase is the master chess player. He was always ten moves ahead, even in
the final moments, but perhaps there was a move Chase couldn’t foresee. One
Oliver set in motion years ago, in a moment where he clung to the light and
held to Diggle and Felicity’s faith in him. A moment where Oliver kept a promise.
