10 things for those writing about people who are blind/have low vision...
So…finishing up my portfolio and I just thought I’d share a few things:
1. Person first language: people who are blind/ people who have low vision/ people who are visually impaired. However, keep in mind not everyone likes first person language or identifies as such. It’s a lot of politics and where you’re located, and tends to be tied to professions.
2. It’s a cane… not a stick
Side note: Please have your characters be safe travelers and use canes or guides some of the time, not just super powers all of the time. It’s hard enough for some young kids to use their canes without comparing themselves to Kanan Jarrus or Daredevil…
3.You don’t get super senses… but maybe you become more aware of what you’re sensing and differentiating what you’re sensing
4. As far as I’m aware and according to people I’ve talked to…touching faces is awkward and not effective
5. People who are congenitally blind may not turn to look at who’s talking because it is a learned skill that may need to be explicitly taught to them. However, people who become blind/lose their vision later in life may still turn to face who’s talking or face things that they are focusing on regardless of whether they can see it
6. Some people turn their heads at angles or appear to be looking away from you because they only have vision in that part of their eye that’s currently facing you. They can’t see you if they look straight on.
7. When you can see, you learn things whole-to-part. You, who are sighted, see a house, you think house. Then you learn door, window, roof, chimney, shutters etc. If you can’t see, you learn part-to-whole, and you need to rely on touch/hearing/smell/taste (when appropriate) to form a concept of something you might learn like this: door, smell of home, window glass, window frame, brick of a chimney, panels on side of the house etc. But then putting in all together as a house is difficult to conceptualize if you’re going off random pieces of the puzzle. You may need a tactile model or something to fill in the gaps if it’s something you’ve never seen and can’t touch in its entirety.
8. Cane stuff: Not everyone taps their cane when they use it. Most that I’ve been with don’t or if they do, they do not use it all the time. Think about it. You miss a lot of tactile feedback and there’s a greater risk of missing things to trip on. There are three types of formal cane techniques: two-point touch (the classic tapping side to side), constant contact, and verification technique. The first two the cane is held at the center of the body and the person moves it from side to side wide enough just so that it goes past their hips. As they move it to one side, their opposite foot steps forward. This gives someone the most protection when moving. Verification technique is when the person holds the cane low in their non-dominant hand and uses constant contact as they see possible obstacles/terrain changes in their path.
9. Counting steps is a myth. People don’t take even steps generally. Sometimes it’s easy to count doors if it’s a small number. But if you’re at school and you have to travel across the building, are you really going to count 20 doors? What if you bump into something and lose count? You’d have to start all over. Most people create landmarks for locations. It could be something like the door with the only bulletin board in the hallway. Or the door with the water fountain next to it. Or the door that is one door to the left directly across from the water fountain. Another thing here, is that you can kind of feel when you’re getting close to somewhere you’ve traveled to before. Like when you’re driving home and you feel like it’s been a while and your turn should be here, when suddenly the turn is here! That’s called time-distance estimation.
10. Most people are not totally blind. Only 2% of the population is visually impaired and only 2% of the population that is visually impaired is totally blind no light perception. This means that most people who are blind/visually impaired/have low vision can see something, and everyone is different and reacts different to their visual impairment and how they use the vision they have.
This got long and slightly ranty, which was an accident… but I hope someone finds it useful. And now that I have this off my chest, remember creative liberty is a thing :)
Okay, so I remember seeing this post where aliens have only one culture and being confused about the many human cultures, but what if it was the same thing with music. Like, aliens did have a concept of different types of music when it came to different alien species/planets of origin, but they lack the concept of one planet/species having many different kinds of music.
And the music here varies a LOT. Just compare country to dubstep. It even varies a ton within a genre. Death metal and symphonic metal don’t even sound like they belong in the same genre, but they are both under metal.
Just imagine the terror on an alien’s face when they associate “earth music” with orchestra then they hear another piece of earth music that is full of extremely fast, seemingly unorganized beats and unintelligible growls.
I was thinking about the Chinese pronoun “renjia” 人家 and how useful it is and how difficult its connotations are to translate succinctly into English.
Okay so “renjia” literally means “person-home” and here’s what it can mean:
1. me (the speaker) 2. you (the spoken to) 3. somebody else (who is there) 4. somebody else (who is not there) 5. people generally
Ok you’re probably thinking “WTF that sounds confusing as hell and the opposite of useful”? But no! It is extremely useful if you WANT to be ambiguous/coy/demure/humble and (potentially) manipulate people! (It also codes as feminine IMO within Chinese culture, YMMV.)
Let’s say I’m hanging out with my friends Anne, Bruce, Charlene, and David. David suggests going to see a zombie movie.
I reply, “Renjia doesn’t like zombie movies. Let’s see something else.”
In that context, it would mean “somebody here doesn’t like zombie movies”. I might be referring to myself, or I might be referring to someone else who is there, without actually naming them.
Maybe I’m embarrassed that I don’t like zombie movies: this way I can make my objection known without committing to it. Or, maybe I know that Bruce hates them, but is the kind of person who won’t speak up for himself and who’ll feel bad if we don’t go to something just because of him? Now I’ve covered for Bruce, AND Bruce doesn’t have to feel guilty, because I could have been talking about myself or another person in the group.
See in English if you said “somebody here doesn’t like zombie movies,” that would be odd, somebody would probably say, “who?” and it would also imply IMO that the somebody wasn’t yourself.
Anyway if you’re a person (*cough* like me) who finds it hard to speak up for yourself as yourself in groups, it’s an extremely useful social navigational tool. Some women also use renjia habitually.
It’s a sociolinguistic thing and an example of how languages adapt to cultural needs (or vice versa if you want to get all Sapir-Whorf up in here).
This is only one possible use of renjia, you could write a dang thesis on it and somebody probably has.
Edit: “Qiu, Miao-Jin (2000) Chengdaici Renjia de Yuyi ji Yuyong Yanjiu [A Semantic and Pragmatic Study of ‘Renjia’ in Mandarin Chinese], MA Thesis, National Taiwan Normal University.”
A FFXV / Fabula Nova Crystallis AU where Eos is a world with nations torn apart by political strife and war. Tired of watching his family line and home fall to ruin, crown prince of Insomnia, Noctis Lucis Caelum, pleads with his kingdom’s deity Etro to arise as a champion. Hearing his plea, the goddess sends a Fal’cie to answer his the call…
Here is Part 3 and the final set of panels I had drafted out for this little comic AU. There was a lot of hard work put into this, and I hope that you all have enjoyed the ride! It’s been one learning experience after another, and while I feel there’s still a lot for me to learn I hope to find the time and inspiration to make more comic shorts, be they fan art or original creations. Huge thanks to everyone kind enough to like, reblog or leave encouraging/funny messages and tags; they simply make my day. Please enjoy~!
I feel like alot of people mentioned Loqi banter at some point. So here! :D Have some Loqi banter!
Gladiolus: “Kind of ironic that we have two Nifs traveling with us.” Prompto: “Uh, yeah… Weird for sure, I guess.” Gladiolus: “Remind me again why we decided they can come with us?” Ignis: “Well, according to Noct, they could prove to be valuable allies to us along the way. That, and apparently General Tummelt has some ‘business’ with the Marshal.” Loqi: “It seems someone is capable of understanding English enough to get what I was saying.” Ravus: “It is only for a brief moment, General Tummelt. These moments of genius do not last.”
Gladiolus: *scoffs* “So Peanut’s got a grudge, huh?” Loqi: “Peanut? I am Brigadier General Loqi Tummelt of House Tummelt, Magitek Infantry Specialist and-” Noctis: “Peanut actually is a good nickname for him.” Ignis: “It has a charming ring to it.” Loqi: “What?! I told you, my name is not-” Prompto: “Hey, Peanut! Try to keep up with us!” Ravus: “Yes… You should not squander time, Peanut.” Loqi: “HOW DARE ALL OF YOU.”
Noctis: “What the hell?! He summoned an entire mech to fight the behemoth?!” Ravus: “He enjoys feeling tall.”
Loqi: “Allow me to end your suffering, Lucian…!” Ignis: “Why thank you, General. I always did find cutting onions to be rather bothersome.” Loqi: *tearing up* “It’s the least I can do to try aiding…!”
Gladiolus: “Hey, Peanut. How’d you ever get such a high rank in the Nif army anyways? Aren’t you younger than us?” Loqi: “I fought until I conquered what obstacles came in my way – regardless of the challenge.” Gladiolus: “Yet you can’t even climb into the off-road Regalia without struggling.” Loqi: “OKAY, LISTEN HERE, YOU-”
Noctis: “So what’s your deal with Cor anyways? What did he ever do to you to get you so pissed off?” Loqi: “Why would I tell you my private affairs and conflicts? King or not, you don’t have the right to know.” Prompto: “I bet it was because Cor called him a pipsqueak~” Loqi: “He had no right to refer to me as such! I am Brigadier General-” Noctis: “Yup. It was the pipsqueak thing.”
Ho god, I love this character and his different costume (I know he has more than those one, but I choose my favorites ;) ) and I like to experiment my style on this one, add some details OwO
Also I take the opportunity here to annonce that I’m opening another tumblr page where I will reblog the stuff that I like and answer a lot more questions! I do that because I always forbid myself to reblog on this blog, so people who comes won’t get lost between my art and the other’s. Plus, that kind of annoys me to mix my art and just some post where I talk, I have the feeling that it can annoy people who just want to see animation >< But I think it’s quiet sad to not help people to have some views or reblog or struggle with answering questions :(
The loft doors click shut and Alec sags back against them, sighing deeply. It’s only around six in the evening, but it feels much, much later. The world is stuck in that liminal space between sunset and darkness, leaving just enough light to make Alec wonder whether he should turn on the lamps. Everything is bathed in sepia tones falling through the windows, washed-out and almost soothing, if only it didn’t make the flat feel more empty.
He rubs at his face, tendrils of pulsing pain climbing up the back of his neck and into his temples. The objective silence of the loft makes it worse - cars keep driving on the road below, someone is playing loud music, but up here everything is too quiet, devoid of Magnus’ usual familiar presence. It doesn’t feel like a home without him, instead only like a space to inhabit, one with a bed too big and too many coffee cups for one person.
Alec toes off his boots and sets his bow down in its usual spot, before making his way through the living room and towards the kitchen. While passing by the couch, he shrugs off his suit jacket and tosses it carelessly onto it, shoulders rolling to try and diffuse the tension in his muscles.
How do you stay focused and motivated all the time?
Hey! I’ll start by saying I’m not focused or motivated all of the time. I have days where I procrastinate a lot or blatantly put off actual work. I’ll have times where I really don’t want to study and feel extremely unmotivated. Everyone does. Even people who run studyblrs. I think my main trick is being disciplined. I’ve run a studyblr since 2014 and in that time I’ve really worked on my discipline. I have learnt that things just have to be done - be it assignments, studying, or readings. I have to do it otherwise I’m letting myself down. I have always hated the feeling of regret so that in itself motivates me to try as best I can. I don’t want to let myself down or let my parents down. I like to achieve. Again, I think everyone does. I feel satisfied when I see ‘disctintion’ or ‘high distinction’ on my results and that really helps. Discipline really falls into staying focused and motivated. If you can improve your discipline, just little by little, you will get there. Try forcing yourself to do a bit every day. Even if it is something small. Reinforce something positive for completing it. Another motivation is having my studyblr. I like to document what I’m doing so I can share it on here or my Instagram. My blogs kind of become accountability partners in that sense. It is definitely worth trying if you don’t have one already! As I’ve said my motivation dips every now and then. You just have to try to push through. Obviously, having motivation makes it ten times easier to study but it is so important to learn to work without it. These few posts might help you gain some much-needed motivation:
As for focus, this is something that, again, does take time to master but you can certainly takes steps to improve. My biggest tip would be to remove all your distractions. This could be either your phone, computer, or things on your desk. Time management and productivity apps are so great for keeping you off your phone. I currently use an app called Forest. It gamifies and rewards my time with a little tree. If I use my phone, it will die! It really helps me to stay focused. I’ll see that I’ve got 5 minutes left of that study period and I’ll think “okay, it’s just another 5 minutes..keep going!”. If I don’t use Forest, I will sometimes timelapse myself. I find it so cool to be able to watch it back and see everything I’ve written or typed in a quick video. I love sharing them on my blogs too so it’s great! I don’t want to stop recording so I’ll just say off my phone! For your computer, there are apps that block websites. Forest as a Chrome and Mac extension but apps like RescueTime, StayFocusd can stop you going on Tumblr. I have a post on productivity apps here including paid and free for iOS, Android and Mac. Another thing I’ve found works best is having two accounts on my laptop. One is for university work and the other for blogging. I don’t have any social media logged in on my uni account so I can’t just check a site for a minute because I’m bored. Honestly, probably one of the smarter things I’ve done without intending too haha! I think most computers have the option to create a second account, so have a look. Like most people, I get distracted by stupid things like my pens! When they’re on my desk, I sometimes just end up looking at them or fiddling with them. If I catch myself doing that I will put it out of my reach so I’m not tempted again. Another thing I’ve been trying is externalising my thoughts. If I get distracted by something or have a “gosh, I need to remember that” moment, I will write it down. By getting it out my brain and onto a bit of paper, I no longer have to think about it and can continue. One final thing I sometimes do is listen to music. If I’m downstairs working it can get noisy if my family is around. I will usually play the ‘deep focus’ playlist of Spotify. Other suggestions are gaming or film soundtracks. Their intention is to be something in the background but distracting enough to pull your focus! YouTube has loads of compilations so check there!
I apologise this is a really long answer but hopefully it’s informative! Remember to take small steps! You’ll be able to control your focus in no time if you keep practising. It’s important to stay positive as well xx
I’ve gotten a few questions about candles and candle magick here and there, so I figured I’d make another Little Witchy Guide! If I have left anything out, please let me know! :) I really hope this helps you and please feel free to ask me any questions of any kind! :D
Candle magic is an ancient art and it is the most widely used magic practiced today. The candle itself is a very powerful magical tool it contains all the basic elements earth, wind, fire and water, earth is represented in the wax, water the melted wax, the flame fire and the air is the smoke. The colour of the candles is very important as the different colours will bring with it its own energy and power, green for healing, red for empowerment etc. Each of the elements has with it its own single coloured candle, green for earth, yellow for air, blue is for water and red is for fire. The different colours also represent either a yin female or yang male energy, yellow is yin, green is yang, blue is yin and red is yang.
A candle is believed to have its own vibration and can be used in meditation and divination, pink or violet is a calm and soft light where as red is strong and powerful, when a candle is lit its colour is released into the surrounding area which will bring a nice energy into the room. If during your ritual you need a lot of power, light multiple candles. By rubbing oil over a candle before your ritual this will charge the candle with your own personal energy.
Magical tips on candles:
It’s always a good idea to clean candles, this will strengthen their power.
Candles prefer not to be blown out, but to be put out using a toll or wet fingertips, blowing out the candle may insult the element.
It is best to use a different candle for each magical purpose, if you are using a red candle for love and a white one for healing, keep them separate.
A white candle is symbolic of purity and can be used in place of any other colour.
Any candle can be used in your magic, but beeswax candles are more powerful.
Engraving a candle is a good way to bring about your wish and by adding a letter of the magical alphabet you will bring mystery and connection to the ancient art of Wicca. A simple example could be to engrave a heart for love and a dollar sign for wealth in your ritual.
If a candle goes out whilst you are practicing doing magic, this is a sign, a message.
On your birthday when blowing out the candles you perform an act of candle magic. No one really knows where the idea of placing candles on a birthday cake came from, the main possibility is from the ancient Greeks who would bake round cakes in honour of their Moon goddess Artemis, it is said that the Greeks placed candles around the cake to resemble a glowing Moon.
Using your own homemade candles will greatly increase their power, candles are very easy to make, you only need to heat wax, add the wick and leave it to cool down then place it into a fire-safe bowl to burn the rest of the way down.
Looking into the flame of a candle is the perfect way to regain or strengthen focus .
A simple candle ritual is to sit in a darkened room facing a mirror, place the candle in front of you and look at your reflection, let your eyes relax and after a few moments your face will begin to change. Your reflection will reveal what you looked like in your past lives. This magic ritual can also be done with a friend. Both of you sit in a darkened room with a candle between you, and as you look at each other letting your eyes relax, you will see what your friend looked like in their past lives.
Some simple yet powerful candle magic is to write your wish on a piece of paper and fold it in half, light one corner with the candle flame and hold the paper as long as you can before the flame reaches your fingers.
To charge your candle you can rub essential oil into it, this will add power to your magic, any oil can be used it’s a personal preference.

Summary: After your grandparents pass away, you find out
they leave everything to you, including a large sum of money. Deciding to take the advice of your
grandparents, you live your life to the fullest; which means moving to Boston
and bump into Chris Evans.
A/N: Let me know if
you guys enjoy this! Maybe there will be
a few more parts if enough people request!
The warm sun felt toasty on your face, as you wrapped your
cardigan tightly around you; the brisk crisp fall air of Boston giving you
slight chills. You were sat at a bench,
overlooking the beautiful serene water of Boston Public Garden. It was your favorite place to visit as a
child, and because of that, you knew you had to move here.
Growing up in a small farm town in Iowa had been wonderful;
at least in your eyes. Most people hated
it, and others would probably dread having to live in such an isolated, nothing
to do, small hick town. But you were an
imaginative, adventurous child; always reading books and imagining you were in
the main characters place. You were also
a romantic and it was easy to be one in a small town. The boys were raised right by their parents;
true gentlemen, which was hard to find nowadays.
Summary: Research leads to more between Sam and reader. Basically a little plot, a little poetry and some good old fashioned smut.
Word Count: 2313
Warning: Smut, language. Sorta rough sex.
As always, feedback is welcomed and appreciated. Tags are at the bottom.
It’s a Thursday night and you are seated at an enormous table in a public library after hours. And no, you didn’t enter through the front door. The method of entry for you and Sam had been a window around back that Sam had managed to open with his pocket knife. Because that’s how hunters roll.
Sam is seated across from you. Books are stacked all around, piled high. Dean, the lucky bastard, is staking out the apartment where the suspect lives. You, however, drew the short end of the stick and are stuck doing research for the next ten billion hours. At least, that’s what it feels like.
The upside is that between paragraphs, you can sneak peaks at Sam Winchester. The way his eyebrows draw together as he concentrates, the way his hair falls down to cover his face as he reads, it does things to you. Fucking hell, it doesn’t’ help that he’s wearing his Fed getup. That white button down shirt? Jesus Christ. It makes your cheeks feel hot in a cool room, your stomach does somersaults. He always has this effect on you, he just doesn’t seem to realize it. Which only serves to make him more desirable.
Blowing out the lungful of air that you’ve been holding in, you force yourself to return to the centuries-old text in front of you. It smells comforting, old leather and musty pages. As much as you hate research, you have a fondness for books. Fiction is more your speed. When it comes to research, you’d prefer some wifi and Google. Ancient lore, unfortunately, isn’t usually found with a few keystrokes.
Okay, time to concentrate. Grabbing another book from the stack to your left, you quickly scan the table of contents. A chapter labeled ‘Kamadeva’ catches your eye. Flipping quickly to the right chapter, you read the text. Hmm, this sounds like it could be useful.
yall, important announcement here, from one a-spec to another
if u got mutuals on this site that u see posting/reblogging aphobic messages and posts, esp during pride, and if they commonly talk shit about asexuals and aromantics and get like 20+ notes from their mutuals that kind of have always scared u a bit:
👏 drop 👏 them 👏
100% get rid of them
soft block. hard block. unfollow. get that toxicity offfffff ur dash my dudes.
i know its kind of hard esp if u feel like ur friends with this person but u guys trust me.. when worst comes to worst, they are not going to care if ur having a breakdown bc of shitcourse stress.
they are not going to comfort u, they are going to ignore u, bc ur pain is trivial to them. they just 100% do not care
and half the time, they’re not even gonna realize that they’re hurting u
do yourselves a favor and purge that shit from ur lives okay. it feels so freeing being able to post a breakdown that is shitcourse related and not have to worry about tagging it so they wont have to see it.
its incredible to have real friends who love every part of u, and respect those parts.
u shouldnt have to have ur identity on another persons blacklist bc somehow u are a ‘discourse topic’ and they dont want to start 'drama’
do yourselves a favor and surround yourself with only kindness and acceptance alright?

(also if ur worried about makin new friends, hmu bc i love my a-spec buds)
Hinata looks over his shoulder at Tobio on his bike. He looks amazing, hair almost matching the sky behind him. Tobio is thinking about something to say when a rumbly little truck putters around the bend in the road. Tobio scoots his bike close to Hinata in the shoulder, tall grass tickling his legs. They wave at the driver, who beep-beeps at them before disappearing down the road where they’re headed next.
Tobio pulls his leg up to tap his bike pedal forward, but then Hinata’s fingers are resting on his forearm. Tobio smiles a little, leaning down and kissing him.
“Okay, now let’s go,” Hinata says after a moment. “Just had to do that first. Wanted to do it for a while. Every time I come up here I think about it.”
*cracks back* this took forever but it’s finally done!!!! I skipped the part with the truck driver tho haha…
This is a scene from @byesweetheart‘s Countdown series’ 13th installment, Happy! Please give it a read if you like Kagehina fluff and a kind of slowburn. It’s so good guys…….you won’t regret it (unless it ruins your life with sweetness)
For full resolution, you have to open it in another tab lol
Ahhh this is the last advice post for the back to school marathon! Whew, it’s a really huge accomplishment for me, and I hope that you appreciated all my tips and advice. This post will feature some of my favorite organization tips for school, where some of these are familiar. If you’re a student, then these tips should be surely something to take home~
✽use a planner, bujo, or anything to keep all your plans: You’ve seen this tip everywhere, therefore it is very important. Use a planner, bullet journal, or really just anything like a notebook or notepad (something that is compilable) to record all your assignments,, important dates, etc. This is beneficial for organizing your schoolwork and being on track of things.
✽specific binders and folders: I really love these things because they keep all your papers in one place. I placed “specific” because it’s very orderly to designate one folder or binder for one subject, but then again it’s possible to have a combined-subject binder or folder (like expandable file folders). I personally use plastic folders with 3 rings because they’re not bulky, yet they hold your papers well!
✽use dividers, sticky notes, page flags, etc.: These (and the similar) stationery are created for organization, so you should consider using them! Dividers are good for combined-subject binders/folders. Sticky notes and page flags can also serve as dividing tabs as well~
✽get a school bag with a good amount of pockets: I see that a lot of people want to just shove in all their writing utensils, sticky notes, etc. in their bag, and it gets LOST into the abyss, like no joke LOL. Having a bag with multiple pockets can solve the problem. Put specific items into specific pockets to arrange them to your liking. Larger pockets are also good for storing big things like folders or laptops, and some could be for food too!
✽have pouches: This is another option if you do not have a bag with many pockets. Have a good pencil case that suffices to your needs, depending on the amount of writing utensils you bring to school (which I’m guessing if you’re a stationery addict, then a LOT haha). You can have a pouches for your personal essentials, or maybe small stationery. The options are limitless! ;D
✽only bring the stuff you need: I have a rotating schedule; 5 periods a day out of 7 periods, so I don’t have to bring all my folders and notebooks. If your schedule is not like mines, then I would suggest taking out some papers that you know you won’t need in class. That way, you can lessen the load on your back or shoulder, and that’s a great feeling :D
✽one item, one area: A basic foundation of organization is this principle, and I thought I might as well include it here. That is: for ONE kind of item, place them in ONE area. Sometimes people shove papers of one class into a folder of another, and it may take them a long while and a small panic attack if they couldn’t find it. Hence, remember to always store certain items into their own little homes~ :3
Hopefully some of these tips may be helpful, or could serve as refreshers/reminders for those who needed it. Thank you very much for reading, and have an amazing day/night!~
((Also, I just wanted to say that my FINAL back to school marathon day (8.31) will feature a “Q&A for students 12th grade and below”. If you are bubbling up any school-related questions, then be sure to anticipate for that! More details will be said in a future post~))
Hey, I was reading your post about Dean stepping away from Sam when on the phone with Cas and I was wondering if you could clarify what you meant. I wasn't sure what your point was, sorry.
Part of what I love about the Dean / Cas relationship is not what we see on screen but the subtext of what we see off screen and what is held back.
Things like the deleted scene going around my dash today with Cas saying ‘I’ve been told I’m getting funnier’ - well heck if that isn’t a conversation he’s had with Dean. The fact that Dean took Cas to Hot Topic to buy Claire a grumpy cat plushy. What happened off screen after they went to the brothel in season 5, the fan fiction gap of 9x06, the drive home in 7x23 after Dean told Cas he would choose him and Cas felt partly forgiven, THE DRIVE HOME AFTER 12x12!!
So yeah I enjoy all this stuff a LOT :)
The phone calls tie into this nicely. I wrote a post particularly about phone conversations here:
Essentially, the fact that Dean often moves away from Sam when calling Cas or is completely off screen when speaking to Cas and, when Sam comes in or he comes near Sam, seems to change the subject back to the case at hand (it’s quite clearly often NOT a continuation of the conversation from before). This just upholds more off screen development of their relationship friendship which is canonically referred to on screen through these references.
So, you know when you were a kid and had a crush, you’d want to speak to them, well heck if you’re going to do that around your sibling, especially one who seems to constantly roll his eyes at you anyway….well imagine you’re a 30-something year old man with crap all relationship experience, a shitty childhood, a complicated understanding of your own sexuality and your crush is a celestial wavelength of intent in the body of a sexy yet holy tax accountant who most of the time seems oblivious and you’re not even sure if he is interested in anyone sexually or you as more than a friend, a mission to protect or his charge, even if he clearly cares about you a lot?
Yeah, its complicated….
So, over the years we rarely see Dean spending time alone with Cas, but we do get snippets of phone calls.
This is 11x06 by the way, for example, or as I like to call it the expositional episode where Amara canonically said that DEAN REPRESENTS HUMANITY. Only 2 seasons late but you know better late than never ;) So here Dean steps away from Sam to speak to Cas, trying to be supportive but in the end kind of being an unhelpful ass to Cas’s struggle as he doesn’t get it and needs him working to solve the problem at hand (kind of exactly how Cas reacts back to him in 12x02).
And ah, season 12, the season that just keeps on giving….
First we have Dean and Cas’s amazingly open exchange in 12x02 precisely when SAM ISN’T THERE. Dean opens up to Cas like a book, delves into his feelings for Chucks sake…. “It’s all just toooo much”. And yeah, like I say, Cas responds in such a mirrored way to 11x06.
But then? Well Mary is our stand in Sam here, when she is around, Dean’s all business.
This is part of a running theme and kind of cements the point I’m making within ONE episode. And its a Bucklemming episode…
Then the opener at the bunker of 12x13 gives us another, standard case of ‘Dean is talking to Cas on the phone for an unspecified amount of time and when he comes near Sam ends the conversation with a perfunctory statement’.
Which, you know I’m not going to make a big deal of, but they make a point of Dean walking in talking to Cas in exactly the same place that he then watches Gavin reunite with the woman he loves surrounded by a glowing light exactly one episode after Cas was all glowy. Just saying.
Then 12x15 gives us GOLD.
First of all the intentional double layering of Sam’s “I love you” to Mary and Dean’s closing his conversation with Cas. I loved how intentional this was, it was a clear exposition for me that TPTB are aware of this and playing on it for *reasons* that I hope will eventually come to fruition.
At the end of the episode Cas is in a difficult situation and Dean knows it, the whole “did he sound off you you?” - this is nowhere near the first time. Dean knows Cas but to be fair he also is a master at reading people generally so I take it as a little of one and a little of the other in these situations.
BUT I do love this moment:
Which is exactly the same reaction to the ‘honour bar’ moment in 9x18 - in both Dean looks aside at Sam in a way that insinuates he is holding something back due to Sam’s presence. Which ties into why he usually walks away from Sam or starts the conversation away from Sam where possible when he talks to Cas.
So I hope this answers your question - because basically yes, the phone call thing is just one of the many ways in which Dean holds back from whatever is happening with Cas because of his perception of Sam. Whether he needs to do this is another matter, but he does.
And as this is part of his facade that is being addressed this season I’m interested to see whether we might get more phone conversations with Cas in front of Sam moving forwards to show this alongside what I hope will be Dean being generally more open with his feelings.
