here enjoy my list of one thing

Pre-History of Online Video

I’m headed to California to celebrate online video…for those of you who aren’t  able to come home, you get to celebrate it as well. Spend some time with the greatest internet videos ever made.

The Show with Ze Frank - For a while there it really felt like everyone on the internet was a Sports Racer. This listing of Ze’s videos on YouTube is fantastic because a lot of them don’t have many views so, if you want to, you can go through and experience them from the beginning with a lot of other Nerdfighters. Enjoy.

Homestar Runner - I really believe this is one of the internet’s greatest treasures. You could spend weeks rummaging around in here, and I encourage you to do that. There are not a lot of things that are simply as joyful and peculiar and deeply pleasing in my life as Homestar Runner. Just remember that, back in the day, my entire dorm would run to the nearest computer when we heard a new sbemail was out.

All Your Base - The thing to remember about All Your Base Are Belong to Us is that it was a self-sustained project that involved the willing collaborations of hundreds of individuals. The promotion of the original meme, the photoshopping, the musicians who created the synthesized voices…people were creating it simply because they loved being a part of its creation.

The End of the World - I don’t know why this caught on so hard or who the creator was or where they are today, but it is a wonderful thing

Drarry fic recs I

Umm, so I’ve read a *lot* of Drarry in the past couple of months. SO MUCH DRARRY. And I have feelings. Here is a list of a few that I’ve loved so far. Keep in mind that my taste is usually a lil’ on the darker side when it comes to this ship (meaning I enjoy angst and actively seek out stories that will make me cry) and I have a thing for mentor!Snape. Without further ado~

Turn (306k) - This is my favorite thing ever and the best one I’ve read in a LONG LONG time. It’s essentially this epic 300k tale of Harry learning how to live his life to the fullest, and it has the most exquisite characterization of Draco, and you. won’t. be. able. to. put. it. down. For real. It’s even CANON COMPLIANT (i.e. not EWE) when it starts so you can just adopt it straight to your headcanon and live the rest of your life in happy Drarry heaven.

Reparations (87k) - IF YOU DON’T ALREADY LOVE DRARRY, THIS IS THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION. This is everything I adore about this pairing and it has all this fantastic flirting, pining, and sexual tension. It is all to die for and I want to stay in this fic ‘verse until the end of time. Also check out its lovely sequel Foundations (and everything else this author has ever written).

A Thousand Beautiful Things (104k) - I’m so thoroughly taken with this fic and it’s such a wonderfully well-written piece that I didn’t even think about how long it took for the Drarry part to happen until I’d already finished it. Spy!Draco and war/post-war and touching friendships galore. I’ve cried so much, and it has this lovely mentor!Snape, and your heart will break for them all, but it’s all so beautiful, and I can’t rec it enough. Seriously, don’t miss it.

Tempus Fugit (93k) - This is the kind of fic that is so beautifully written that I want to read every word out loud just to feel how they taste in my mouth (and if you don’t recognize this feeling, I AM SO SORRY). Drarry has such amazing passion together here, the sort of romance I love to read but so rarely find. Deals with future-travel and all that greatness. It will really tug at your heart strings, and the writing is so rich and eloquent.

Chaos Theory (102k) - This fic BROKE ME. IT KILLED ME. I AM DEAD. It tore my heart into tiny, tiny shreds, and eventually I was just begging for mercy, barely able to see what I read at certain points because I. could. not. stop. crying. Haven’t cried so much over a fic in years, if ever. But it was the most beautiful, beautiful thing. I loved it so much. Genius!Draco and mentor!Snape and the most soul-touching love story there is. It comes with SERIOUS trigger warnings though, so proceed carefully. Read the tags.

Cunning and Ambition (371k WIP) - I love Slytherin!Harry and this is the best one I’ve found. It’s a canon rewrite of all the books, but it’s so much darker and deals with things like the Dursleys’ abuse. I have cried myself to pieces every time I’ve read this one, and it is a thing of BEAUTY. It also has the most amazing mentor!Snape, and I just really like how you can feel Harry & co age in this, from their innocence as first years to the arrival of puberty in their teens later. I mean, Harry and Draco are best friends. Sooo good.

Secrets (411k) - BAMF!Harry, anyone? This is a 400k+ monster with the most badass characterization of Harry I’ve ever seen, and it’s such a thoroughly indulgent and enjoyable read that I had endless fun with. I can’t wait to read it again–soon. It was written pre-DH but some of this author’s ideas about Horcruxes are even better than in canon. This fic is not for everyone, I think, but do give it a try. You might end up loving it just as much as I did.

He Who Must Not Be Normal (40k) - THIS ONE MESSED ME UP. The writing style is so unique to this author, Draco and Harry are so desperate and dysfunctional that it HURTS, and it is glorious. It is beautiful. It will break your heart a little. Also check out The Boy Who Only Lived Twice.

Touch Me Fall (23k) - One of those fics that stayed with me for a good while after finishing it. This is such a lovely piece of writing and this author writes such a fantastic Drarry that I could weep. Harry also makes this really controversial speech in front of the Ministry in it and it. gave. me. chills

Then Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain (21k) - This is going to sound strange but I just adore the way this author writes kissing. I’ve read all her stories and her Drarry is gorgeous, you have to see it for yourself. This one is my fave because it is such an adorable bundle of fluff and fuzzy feelings, so well-written you won’t even notice the lack of a proper plot.

… this post is long enough already, so I’m just going to save the rest for a second part that I’ll hopefully write at some point. Meanwhile– enjoy!

(Part II)

PS: If you read something that made you cry, I WANT TO KNOW.

I decided to make something nice for all of my wonderful followers, I am grateful for each and every one of you. I would also like to say thank you to all of the incredible writers in this fandom, for giving us the opportunity to read your amazing stories about Stiles and Derek falling in love.

Here’s a list of about 250 Sterek stories which I immensely enjoyed.

Have fun!

A Blossoming Romance by Trelkez

Stiles will just have to try harder next time. No one can ignore him forever.

A Californian Werewolf in New York by dancinbutterfly, knight_tracer

When Derek finally realizes that there’s nothing left for him in Beacon Hills, he goes back to New York, gets a life, falls in love and finds his home.

Advanced Vocabulary by LolaFeist

Guys Gift Guide

External image

Hello ladies. I’m Jessica’s husband, Adam. This is my first guest post on What I Wore. Jessica asked me to write a list of things I like that could make good gifts for the guy in your life. If your man is anything like me, he’ll enjoy something from this list. I suppose if he’s exactly like me, he’ll enjoy all of them. So without further delay, here’s my Guys Gift Guide.

Opinel French knives

Probably my favorite gift to give because they are really beautiful, really inexpensive, and really French.

Sonos Speaker

I’m actually asking for this one for Christmas, so can’t vouch for quality, only going by lots of great reviews. We have a Bose bluetooth thing now, which sounds good, but can only hold one Bluetooth device in memory. These Sonos guys come with a control app so you can play local music, streaming services and other fun stuff.

Audio Technica turntable

We have this turntable. It has one job - to play records - and it does that well. It also looks good, and is a relatively inexpensive machine for its level of quality.

USA made flannel shirts (also here and here)

I’m asking for these as well. I’ve been wearing plaid flannel shirts since the 90s and don’t see that changing any time soon. It’s my uniform. I’d like to upgrade my red plaid to an American-made thicker fabric shirt.

These are great for the Summer. Pretty much all I wear when the temperature is above 60.

Just bought these a couple months ago and couldn’t be happier. Made in USA, super tough, super comfortable, and they look good too. I’d buy some Sno-Seal to go with it, and waterproof them.

Wigwam socks

I’ve been wearing these for years in the boot months. Warm and comfortable, like socks.

Woodworking and Tools

Wusthoff Santoku 7”

The best all-around knife in the block. I’m a big fan of multi-use tools, and this thing can do pretty much anything. I would rather have two of these than a whole block of single-job knives.

Calphalon omelette pan

I’m sensing a trend here, and learning something about myself. This is another all-around great pan with tons of different uses. Why buy a skillet and a saucepan when you can buy one great pan that does both those things well? The answer is don’t, buy this.

Art from China

Wired wrote an article about this industry and it is amazing. These artists reproduce famous paintings by hand, stroke for stroke. They also create custom, unique paintings to your specification. I would love a portrait of myself looking really presidential, but maybe I have mustard on my collar or I’m holding a taco or something.

Well this could get out of hand, but here are some of the best books I think all men should read.

Watch from Timex

Buy him a sturdy watch that works in all situations, and he’ll stop checking his stupid phone during dinner and at parties just to see what time it is, which leads to checking email, twitter, etc.

iPhone case from Carved

I found this company via  but then realized they were in Elkhart, Indiana just a couple hours up the road. Love their work. I have this one, custom made for a reasonable price.

I love planting things and watching them grow. He might too. Or if he doesn’t, he might learn if you buy him some seeds. Here are some beautiful, useful plants that are pretty hardy in the US.

Copper Mugs

My favorite way to drink cold beverages, because they taste extra cold. This is a solid copper mug, perfect for Moscow Mules and all sorts of other iced cocktails. This one has my distillery’s logo on it, and the proceeds go towards building our tasting room. They make great gifts!

The Perfect Whiskey glass

These are the best whiskey glasses I’ve ever used. They work better than the classic Glencairn taster, and look cooler too. Just got them back in stock. Last year we sold out, so get em while they’re hot.

Sterek fic rec list - College/High School AU

No Homo | 84064 words

Stiles’ sophomore year starts something like this:
3 FourLokos
+ 1 peer-pressuring cat
- 1 best bro to end all best bros
= 1 Craigslist ad headline that reads “str8 dude - m4m - strictly platonic”.
Derek is the fool who replies.

There is a Brotherhood | 21004 words

So far, college has taught Stiles three things:

1) Eight am classes are cruel and unusual and should be avoided at all costs, even if it means having to enroll in something truly hideous instead, like Econ 101.

2) Dorm security is just as tight as Stiles’ orientation leader had promised it would be, and the dude guarding Scott’s dorm in particular does not respond well to bribes.

3) Mrs. McCall clearly had no clue what she was talking about when she’d insisted that Scott and Stiles needed to branch out and room with strangers, so it’s all her fault that Scott ended up with a total dick of a roommate and Stiles got stuck all the way across campus with some guy who has a girlfriend two towns over and is thus never around.

Or, the one where pledge brothers Stiles and Scott start a prank war with Derek Hale’s fraternity.

The Hazards (and Benefits) of Channel-Surfing on Friday Nights | 12175 words

He’s watching TV over the edge of his laptop when Scott brings up the fact that he’s still a lonely loser in his third year of college without a boyfriend which, while being completely true, is really fucking unappreciated. It sparks a desperate need to save what little manhood Stiles has and, before he knows it, he’s blurting, “I totally have a boyfriend, dude. Shows how much you know.”

How was he supposed to know Scott would doubt him? It’s not Stiles’ fault that someone named Derek Hale really exists. It’s also not his fault when his lie grows legs and runs so far he can’t find it until it’s too late – too late and standing right in front of him, gorgeous and annoyed and not at all the person Stiles made him up to be.

Yeah, this could get bad.

Desperate But Not Serious | 13257 words

Stiles is one of the more memorable students in the undergrad Psych class that Derek is assigned to as a TA, and he’s not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. But when Derek finds Stiles starring on a certain website, his feelings become much more clear.

‘Linski’s Late Night Antidote to Lame | 13865 words

Where Stiles has his own college radio show, and the mysterious, faceless Derek is his number one fan.

Also there’s this really hot guy he keeps meeting in the library who totally hates his guts.

Call Me, Maybe (but not in the library) | 23840 words

There’s a long pause, and then: “You’re not Erica.”
Stiles can’t help it. He snorts. “Yeah, no, dude, that’d be pretty difficult since I’m a guy.”

AU where Stiles is an undergrad at UCLA and Derek works in the university library.

The Chemistry Between Us | 26041 words

Meeting Derek Hale wasn’t special, or frightening, or any of the other things everyone had made it out to be. It was, actually, pretty much the opposite. Stiles didn’t even realize the guy was Derek Hale until the moment had passed. Derek: the most infamous student at Beacon Hills University. Stiles: the freshman who falls for him anyway. Awkward encounters, concerned friends, and lots of not-so-casual sex ensue. (A ‘fuckbuddies to lovers’ college AU.)

Darts of Pleasure | 6672 words

Stiles is naked.

He’s naked in a room that’s not his and in a bed that’s not his and there’s a hand lying flat against his lower stomach that’s most definitely one hundred percent absolutely not his.

Deck the Hales with Mistletoe and Holly | 32827 words

Stiles recognizes that there are a number of reasons why this is a bad idea.

The one where Stiles manages to somehow imply that he might be dating his exceedingly hot TA for freshman lit, and ends up inviting him home for the holidays (along with his two crazy sisters) and really hopes that Lydia doesn’t find out he was lying and kill him before maybe he can make it so he’s not lying after all…

Losers | 34234 words

Where Derek is new to college, eager to spend his time learning, and Stiles is everything he didn’t want in a room mate. He’s loud, he’s into sports, and he keeps trying to make Derek do things.

Or, the one where Derek falls for a jock, Erica will cut you if you disturb her studying, and Jackson is a closeted romantic who pretends to hate everything.

Knot the Average Alpha | 20331 words

Stiles’ favourite porn star, Derek Hale, moves into his apartment block and there are inappropriate facial jokes, broken bones, and a staggering amount of threats in a tiny elevator.

It’s Called a Heart Boner | 26784 words

In which everyone and everything ever in the history of the world is trying to ruin Derek’s life before he can finish his master’s, especially his evil twin sister, his weird ability to start relationships on accident, his best friend’s obsession with his sex life, people with dimples, his subsequent inability to end relationships, manipulative sorority queens, and oh yeah, that stupid drunk ass freshman he keeps running into.

The five times Derek saves a very drunk Stiles and the one time Stiles saves him back.

Cupboard Love | 32682 words

He’s carefully balancing the sandwiches and the two biggest tupperware containers he could find that both had functioning lids when the front door opens and he almost drops everything right there in front of the stupid fountain.

If that’s Derek Hale, he’s definitely not a mountain man.

The Right Number | 30377 words

When Stiles Stilinski’s phone gets switched at the gym, he really just wants it back. The last thing he’s expecting is to fall hopelessly in lust with the guy who’s got his phone.

So, of course, that’s exactly what happens.

just pretending that we’re cool | 9319 words

In retrospect, using sex to trick Derek out of stalking Scott had maybe not been the greatest idea ever? Whatever, Stiles’ plans always manage to work themselves out.

The Company I Keep | 67551 words

Stiles has a favorite table at the library. Then some asshole comes along and steals it from him.

Love Comes in Spurts | 45259 words

Stiles has always had sort of a hero worship thing going on with Scott’s step-brother Derek so moving into a house with him freshman year was basically fulfilling a childhood fantasy. Discovering how Derek was putting himself through college, well that was a whole other fantasy that Stiles didn’t even know he had.

I Hope By the Morning | 21463 words

From the bathroom came sounds of the guy brushing his teeth. Stiles rubbed the fifty dollar bill between his fingers and felt cheap. “Dude, I’m not taking your money.”

The guy spat and turned the faucet on. “Take the money. You said you lived in Queens last night? Who the hell lives in Queens.”

The fifty seemed gritty in his fingers, but he put it in the back pocket of his ridiculously tight jeans, anyway. That was, like, a five-hour shift at the coffee shop where he worked, Common Grounds, with tips. “And don’t call me 'dude,’” the guy continued, turning off the faucet. “I’m not your college bro. It’s Derek.”

He Gets Me High | 11562 words

Stiles and Derek act like a couple. But they’re not. Seriously! Derek has a boyfriend and Stiles has a girlfriend. They’re just friends, overly-attached and possessive friends, but that’s it. Right?

What’s in a Name? | 11457 words

“My parents think we’re partners” Derek told Stiles one evening over a late night of grading.
“I would have said colleagues, but partners works,” was Stiles immediate reply.
Derek waited, knowing that Stiles would figure it out.
"Oh” was Stiles verbose second response. “And you didn’t tell them that we … aren’t. Huh.”

Triple Shot Pumpkin Spice Latte | 20468 words

“For two years, Stiles had very much enjoyed his position as Guidance Counselor at his old college. The pay was all right, the students who came to see him were interesting, and his work was challenging and diverse. …Or so it used to be, before some guy named Professor Hale joined the staff.”

AU in which guidance counselor Stiles has to deal with all the students crushing on the elusive and infuriating Professor Hale. This was meant to be a light-hearted winter fic, but some emotional angst slipped in here and there.

This Isn’t Control | 12850 words

Stiles ends up taking a 'Sex, Sexuality, and Society’ class with one of his favorite teachers and discovers that his thesis for his term paper means more to him than just the grade.

Hale to the Chief | 14403 words

First Son Stiles Stilinski thought college back home in Beacon Hills would be the best thing ever.

That is, until he realized that he’d be stuck with Derek Hale as his roommate the entire year.

Dwells Amidst Your Walls | 11441 words

Scott accidentally sells Stiles’ virginity on Craigslist. (Derek wins.)

Howlin’ For You | 33050 words

A college AU with strippers, crime bosses, and a mystery to solve.

I’ve Been Living for the Weekend | 7870 words

Stiles has been pining (he will deny it, but “pining” is definitely the right word to use) after his TA, Derek Hale, ever since the start of the school year… but whatever, it’s not like he’s the only one. When Lydia drags him to her spin class, he finds Derek fucking Hale teaching, and wow, sweaty Derek, this will definitely last him through many lonely nights.

OR, the College/Spin Class AU in which Derek teaches lots of things, Lydia sasses her way through school, Scott is AWOL a lot, and Laura is only slightly short of mashing Stiles and Derek’s faces together and ordering them to kiss.

Game On | 6393 words

Derek first sees him from across the quad four days into fall semester. He’s sitting on one of the long benches, a marker pen in his mouth, grinning at something the kid lounging on the bench beside him is saying. When he laughs properly he pulls the pen out and throws his head back, his neck a long, lean line Derek is entranced by. He flicks the page in his book and highlights something, tossing the cap up in the air and catching it with his teeth.

Um, surprise | 13637 words

“Stiles, we love you, we do. But you don’t have to make an imaginary boyfriend up, seriously.” Kara sighs.

“Why do you guys never believe me?” He groans banging his head on the table.

Stiles is in collage and his friends think Derek’s not real because they’ve never seen or met him. Stiles tells them that Derek’s coming up soon and they all get to meet him, they meet him but in an unexpected situation that happens to involve a rogue omega.

Book Recommendations

1. Mutants: On Genetic Variety and the Human Body

No book has better cemented my qualifications as resident “weird things expert” than this one.

I’d say this is the best and most interesting trade paperback about teratology out there. It’s easy to read, yet eloquent and packed with science, stories, history, illustration, and event fitting descriptions of mythology. Each chapter explains what a different type of mutation is, how it forms, and how it has been interpreted throughout history. If you found genetics a little boring in bio, let Armand Leroi show you how fascinating they can be.

The only problem with this book is that a number of people thought I was reading about X-Men.

2. Freaks: We Who are Not As Others

Also a great read by a man who actually lived the carny life. (With it and for it!) These are stories of people who have serious pathologies, from their own experiences and with their own words, such as the Elephant Man, and amazing stories about how their physiological difference affected their lives. This takes a less scientific approach, more human approach than Mutants. This book is particularly wonderful because you get a glimpse into history that isn’t available anywhere else. The only problem is that means that some of the stories I found I couldn’t confirm.

(Honorable Mention: The Shocked and Amazed! periodical is also a great way to learn about sideshow, freakshow and big top history, lingo, and practices.)

3. Racing the Antelope: What Animals can Teach Us About Running and Life

This is my absolute favorite book. Yes, I found it because I had typed the word “antelope” into Amazon. But it turned out to be one the best book about biology I had ever read, and the only good book about running I’d ever read.

This was later republished as Why We Run. If you are interested in biology and also a runner, this is a must-read. If you are one or the other, it is still highly recommended. In this book, Bernd Heinrich discusses the issues that runners face, such as keeping cool, pacing, endurance, speed, and hydration. He analyzes animals and how they deal with these issues. This is a story of origins of humanity, running, nature, and our connection to all other life.

4. The Best of the Best American Science Writing

I recommend the whole series of The Best American Science Writing and The Best American Science and Nature Writing.

The Best American Series is a series of series’ of collections of the best American writing published each year, organized by topic and aggregated by someone who reads a whole lot about that topic. These books are very useful because it saves you the time of looking for good writing and finding that your articles were simply click-bait or lacking. Every article contained therein is guaranteed to be one of the best articles published in that entire year, according to the editor(s).

They did one better in 2010 and published The Best of the Best American Science Writing, which includes the very best articles from the previous ten years of books published in the series. You will probably never read a better collection of general-population-targeted science articles.

(They also have other titles, but the only other title I’ve read include some from the Crime Reporting series, which has sadly been discontinued.)

5. Bad Science

Ben Goldacre (bengoldacre) is a doctor whose book will literally change the way you think. This should be required reading for all journalists, doctors, and scientists, and it’s highly recommended for everyone.

Goldacre makes it his business to expose bad medicine and other types of pseudoscience. In this book he tackles quackery like homeopathy and Brain Gym. He explains how statistics can mislead people, how trials are misrepresented in literature, how media sources cling to faulty science practices, and why people believe in fake results. This book would make most readers smarter people.

6. Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Series

Ripley’s is a big part of why I’m interested in the strange. Their books (of which there are many) are usually very colorful and image-heavy. For that reason they are great for kids. There are also a lot of books that an adult may prefer, such as A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert Ripley, but I read all different ones. For the last ten years they have released annual books full of the most interesting news. Of course they are not limited to biology, but their books often include chapters such as “Animals” and “Bodies.”

7. Strange Biology: On Anomalous Animals, Mutants, and Mad Science

Of course, the book with the content most appropriate for followers of this blog would be the upcoming book based on it. Right? You can always find the link in the sidebar!

Just like strangebiology, the book features the freaky aspects of the life sciences. The chapters are on goat-unicorns, ethics of the body trade, mammoth ivory, de-extinction, recreating the Pleistocene, Paleoart, Jackalopes, the Loch Ness Monster, a headless chicken, two-faced animals, half-male, half-female animals, combining humans and animals, and two-headed dog experiments. I funded it on Kickstarter and it is wow so great, so go buy a physical copy ($19.95) and a Kindle Version ($3.99). Anyway I am obviously financially biased in favor of this book, just for full disclosure.

8. Transplanting your Head: And other Feats of the Future

This book, published in 1999, is a collection of essays aggregated by the editors of Scientific American. The content is a little dated (It’s been 15 years) but the topics are fascinating. The chapters are Our Bodies in the Future, When Things Go Really Wrong, Using Biochemistry on the Defensive, Working with the Genome, What Can We Do with Gene Therapy, What Can We do with Cloning, Extreme Biology, and Taking Humankind to the Extreme.

9. A Brief History of Bad Medicine: True stories of Weird Medicine and Dangerous Doctors

Not to be confused with Bad Science, Bad Medicine will teach you the history of medicine through anecdotes of some of the worst doctors, practices, beliefs, and accidents of the field. It’s funny, it’s tragic. For a while it had me telling my friends “You’ll never believe what this one doctor did…”

10. Frankenstein’s Cat: Cuddling up to Biotech’s Brave New Beasts

Cloning, genetic engineering, prosthetics, and animal mind-control. This book explores how animals are being used and altered in the new face of biotechnology. It was published in 2013, so the information is pretty solid. It’s also easy to read, and so full of great information, I kind of want to make a new blog post every time I read a new paragraph. If you like Strange Biology or technological advancements, you need to put this on your reading list.

I really enjoy reblogging all types of musings on my characters, especially written ones so I thought, why not dig a little and try to find blogs that post musings and musings only? I managed to compile a really small list of blogs that I found; I’m not sure if all are still active but they seemed to have a good amount of resources, still. I’m not sure if anyone’s ever done this one before or if this will even be useful since it’s so short but here you go!

Vector Art(x) The rest of this pathetically lazy banner by me

And I’ve finally finished my FrUK fic rec list! It’s a tentative list, always growing as I find new ones, remember others, or gain courage to add a few I purposely left off because of content I wasn’t confident enough to share. But as it stands, I’ve amassed quite the collection for you to peruse and cruise through at your leisure. It’s very, very long (and my side notes do not help whatsoever, haha) so sit tight, get a drink; you might be here for a while. Fics under the read more!

30 day summer study challenege – iii/xxx

 planner tips

Hey lovelies! Part three of the challenge was either a habit tracker or planner tips, so I decided to go with this to make another tip post! What I’m listing here are things that I’ve learned throughout my first year of college, experimenting with a few different planning methods. I hope you find this helpful! (●´ω`●)

1. experiment & do what works for you

I know that looking at all these studyblr bujo pictures makes you want to make your own. If it works out and you find yourself enjoying doing AND is helping you stay organized, then wonderful! But if it isn’t working for you, don’t use it. Other planners, such as pre-made ones from stores, apps, and even the great planning printables here on studyblr can be just as effective as a bullet journal; just try out different things, and you’ll find a system that works for you. Even if it seems like nonsense to others, if it makes sense to you, it’s perfectly fine!

Some free apps:

Some daily planning printables:

2. jot down to-do’s as soon as you learn of them

Again, if you’re a perfectionist like me, you might want to make your planner look pretty & organized; and this is perfectly fine! But remember that the reason you have a planner in the first place is so that you won’t forget important events or assignments, so it’s best to get these down quickly so you won’t risk missing them later (which has happened to me once or twice). To avoid this, I usually keep a square sticky note in my planner to jot things down on quickly, then when I have time, I transfer them to my actual planner. This can be a liiiitle time-consuming, but not horribly so, and if you mainly use your planner for just, well, planning, and not that much for aesthetic or craftiness, you can just jot it straight down without worry!

3. color-coding is your friend

Color-coding can be super helpful if you really keep to it! It allows you to just glance at a color to know what’s going on.  For example: birthdays? Red. School events? Green. Org work/extracurriculars? Blue. Personal things? Purple. You can even take it a step further by color-coding things by subjects or exams vs homework. The best part? Most apps also have this (including the four I mentioned), so you can freely use whatever medium you want! Just be sure to remember a code & stick to it!

 4. a planner can have more than one use

This applies more to actual notebook planners, but if you use a more flexible planning app, some of this will work there too! If your pre-made planner is anything like mine, you might have loads of blank pages to write whatever you want! List down things, like your goals or reading list, practice your doodling or lettering, write down recipes or songs or poems, stick down pictures or memorabilia from fun events; the sky’s the limit! Planners don’t have to be all work and no play; you can use them as creatively as you want to!

Now for things that I found super useful personally, that might help you out!

  • have an overview/mini calendar so you can check all your events for a month quickly
  • use the eisenhower matrix to figure out how to prioritize tasks; @apricot-studies made a post on this and even made some printables to use! alternatively, use to do lists marked “do now” and “do later”, or something similar like this one by @studeying
  • keep a planning app on your phone and turn notifications on to be safe; I personally use pocket schedule & google calendar for this
  • if you’re like me and have difficulty keeping up planners/journals alike, involve something that you love doing with it (ex. I love lettering, so I use this to motivate me to keep up with my bullet journal)
  • is there a lot of of blank space on a certain day? write down a quote! it can be a famous one, or what I usually do, a random thing someone said on that day that made you smile

I hope these tips helped you lovelies out! Happy planning! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

The Hiccup Ritual (Joshifer oneshot)

Inspired by the magical time that was Cannes this weekend, rubyfalls and I decided that the whole hiccup curing ritual had obviously happened before, and probably multiple times at that. Here’s my take on one of them. Enjoy!

The Hiccup Ritual

The first time his phone buzzed on the nightstand, Josh ignored it. Whoever it was, they could wait until morning. The second time, he angrily pawed at his nightstand to see who was calling him at… 2:27 AM. Jennifer. Of course. Running through the list of things she could possibly be calling him about in the middle of the night and settling on none of importance, he tossed his phone back on the nightstand and flipped over in bed. She too could wait until morning.

He had just closed his eyes when his phone buzzed for a third time.

“She had better be dying,” he muttered to himself as he turned his body to retrieve his phone again from the nightstand, swiping the screen to answer the call and bringing the phone to his ear. “What?” he sighed into the phone, his voice still heavy with sleep.

“Josh, I need help,” she began immediately, before pausing and considering her next question, “wait, were you sleeping?”

He brought his free hand up to rest it across his eyes. Did she really just ask that? “It’s 2:30 in the morning, Jennifer, of course I was sleeping. Why aren’t you?”

“I was up watching a movie and now I have…” she stopped mid sentence and hiccuped, “…the hiccups. They won’t go away! I can’t sleep!”

Too bad tumblr has a limit on the number of photos you can put in a post. :)

So that’s the end of my edtember challenge! It was actually supposed to be one post every day of September, but I suppose I tend to draw things out. If I’ve set up my queue correctly, today is Monday, June 23, which means that Ed’s new album is available everywhere in the world. I hope you’re all enjoying it! What is your favorite song? I look forward to talking about it with you when I’m back!

*Click [here] for the #edtember challenge list and my previous posts.*

I’m opening up commissions for a limited time period!

I need to make some extra money for my Japan trip at the end of the month, mostly because printing the books for Comiket is going to be kind of pricey, so I need to make sure I have all the money ready.

Anyway, that aside, I also do sketch sheets for 50USD, but I don’t have any examples of those posted here because all my new digital examples are explicit and I didn’t feel that appropriate to post on my main blog haha. If you snoop around on my adult blog you probably have an idea about what those are like.

Anyway, please send an email to with “Holiday commission” as the subject, and please keep in mind that payments will be upfront.

Also, I won’t be taking every commission! I usually can’t take all of them because there are quite a few extra. However, I try to take the ones I will enjoy.

A list of things I’m not terribly fond of drawing:

Muscle dudes, most people, robots, most people, really specific scenarios

A list of things I’d be a lot more inclined to want to draw:

Pokemon, creatures, Flora critters

I’m going to try to reply to each email even if I can’t take it! I apologize if I don’t reply right away either. I’m kind of bad at emails sometimes.

Thanks everyone for the 10K+ followers in less than one year. I enjoy a lot posting stuff about Sebastian Stan every day and it make me very happy to see that so many of you follow my blog. I really am super happy, that is why I a preparing a little thing for you in order to thank you for the 10 000+ followers ! Here is the list of my favorite tumblr ! Im sorry if I forgot some, if I did and I notice it later, ill send you a little message !

Grammar & Style: Improving Sentence Flow

Anonymous asked:

I really enjoy reading your posts, and I find them really helpful. I looked through your master list for a blog post related to good writing ‘flow’, but I couldn’t find one, so I decided to ask here. Do you have any tips for kind of weaving your sentences together so that they just fit together and keep the story going? A lot of my sentences right now, I feel, are kind of disjointed and clunky, like you’re trying to shove two mismatching puzzle pieces together. Any ideas how to improve my flow?

There are a few things to keep in mind when trying to improve sentence flow:

1) Variation in sentence length is important.

One of the quickest ways to ruin sentence flow is to structure your sentences the same way over and over again. For example:

Mary woke up and felt sad. It was morning and still dark. She sat up and stretched out. The wood floor was icy cold. (6/6/6/6)

Sentence length should vary to keep things from sounding so robotic:

Mary woke up feeling empty and sad. It was morning and still dark, so she sat up and stretched out. Her toes curled as they touched the icy cold wood floor. She wondered if she’d ever wake up feeling warm. (7/13/11/9)

2) Vary patterns.

Try not to start and end your sentences the same way over and over again:

Mary went to the window and looked out. Mary noticed the car was missing from the driveway. Frank must have been up very early. Mary shook her head and decided to go downstairs.

Most of the time, a simple rearrangement or change in wording will solve this problem:

Mary went to the window and looked out. The car was missing from the driveway, so Frank must have been up very early. Drawing the curtain closed again, Mary shook her head and decided to go downstairs.

3) Clarify your meaning.

If your sentences wander or if you repeat the same information over and over again, the flow is interrupted:

The clock chimed six times as Mary came down the dimly lit grand staircase. It was six in the morning so the house was still dark and sleeping. The servants were not yet about at this early hour, but they would be soon.

There’s too much being repeated here:

- the clock chimed six times / it was six in the morning / at this early hour
- the staircase is dimly lit / the house is still dark
- the servants were not yet about / the house is still sleeping

If you try to condense some of this information, the sentences will flow better:

The clock chimed six times as Mary came down the grand staircase. The house was dark and everyone was still sleeping, but the servants would be about soon enough.

4) Don’t stress about sentence structure overly much in your first draft.

If you’re writing your first draft, try not to focus too much on sentence structure. You should certainly try your best to make your sentences flow, but don’t obsess to the point that it impedes your forward motion. Improving sentence structure is one of the things you’ll focus on when you revise your story after it’s finished. When you focus on revising sentences after the story is already written, it frees up  your brain to think more about mechanics and less about the story itself. The more stories you revise, the better you’ll get at sentence structure, and the more apt you’ll be to structure them better during the frist draft.

5) Practice makes perfect.

If you’re a newer writer and your sentence structure isn’t perfect, don’t panic. Keep trying your best to create sentences that flow really well, but be patient with yourself. It really is something that gets better with time.

6) Try reading your paragraphs out loud.

One of the best ways to hear what’s wrong with sentence flow is to read each paragraph out loud. Sometimes you’ll even find yourself correcting the structure as you read, because very often what looks right to us on the page is instantly offensive to our ears. ;)

I am not giving them anymore time or thought.  They don’t deserve it.  I am here to enjoy the show, enjoy the cast, enjoy SamCait, and sometimes even criticize any one of those things.  So, no more of them.  They are not yucking on my yum anymore.
