her facebook

My cousin is a professional hippo keeper and has advanced far enough in the field of professional hippo keeping that she’s head of..idk, hippos? all giant herbivores? at Disney and has been consulting with the Cincinnati zoo about Fiona.

And being her facebook friend has really introduced me to the subculture of hippo keepers, who apparently all know each other and also can recognize most zoo hippos on sight.

And man, if you thought cat ladies were bad about the “my precious panther children just bit the shit out of my arm and then vomited on my rug”  shit then I need to tell you that it is NOTHING compared to how hippo people talk about hippos with each other.  For example, my cousin will post a cute video of Fiona and her mother and all her hippo friends will comment things like, “Aww, look at Bibi.  She’s beautiful. Remember that time she bit down while I was brushing her teeth and she broke every bone in my hand?” and all the other people are like,  “Aw, precious Nile princess! I remember riding with you in the ambulance!”

Or she’ll post a picture of baby Fiona gnawing gently on her caregiver’s leg and someone will respond with a picture of a massive bruise she got when a teenage hippo did that and everyone will be like, “hahaha, these nightmare murder beasts sure are wonderful.”

Y'all please share this! Ria was my roommate at NYU this summer and she is literally the kindest person ever and I hate the idea of anything happening to her.

She lives in Durham, North Carolina so if you’re in that area please be on the lookout!

One of my friends from school was kidnapped this week by ICE

Cal State Los Angeles student Claudia Rueda taken by ICE this morning. Please mobilize and spread the word #FreeClaudia

“Early this morning, Border Patrol conducted a raid in Boyle Heights kidnapping Claudia Rueda outside her home in Boyle Heights, immigrant rights organizer with the Los Angeles Immigrant Youth Coalition and student at Cal State Los Angeles. Claudia most recently lead a campaign to free her mom, Teresa, from ICE detention after Border Patrol agents similarly kidnapped Teresa from their home.

When the officials showed up this morning, family members knew not to open the door since the agents couldn’t produce a warrant. But they got to Claudia anyway while she was outside moving the family’s car. For several hours her family had no idea where she was.

Claudia has lived in the US nearly her entire life. She participated in college-prep programs, was a student at UC Santa Cruz, and transferred to Cal State LA where she is currently studying Latin American Studies and has the support of many professors and campus organizations.Claudia has been preparing for apply for DACA but had been unable to gather the money for the filing fees.

Claudia’s best friend states: “Claudia is an extremely supportive, empowering, and hard working friend. All throughout high school, she encouraged students to continue their studies in higher education, becoming involved in afterschool programs like ESCALERA. Throughout our college career, she has continuously supported me, offered her home, and her wisdom to continue being a hardworking student and following our passions.”

Call Border Patrol in Chula Vista at 619-498-9750 to demand DHS not initiate removal proceedings and release Claudia to let her apply for DACA and get back to her family and completing finals.

“Hi, my name is ________________, and I am a concerned community member calling in support of Claudia Sarahi Rueda Vidal, DOB: 1/15/95, a DACA eligible youth, college student and beloved community member from Boyle Heights. Claudia has been a mentor in the community to other youth and has long fought for justice for others. I demand that Border Patrol release her to her family and community to let her apply for DACA with USCIS.”

FIGHT DEPORTATIONS BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
FIGHT ICE WITH FIRE!

*** this is a copy and paste from her group’s Facebook. Claudia was head of a group of people that collaborated with my MSA and BLACK student union as well as the transgender rights/undocumented students group TRUCHA at our school. This is clearly a targeted attack because of her activism. I desperately need everyone’s help in trying to free her.

The One That Got Away

by reddit user bookshelfghost

Lily Harrison and I met at a graduation party when we were eighteen. As soon as I walked into the house, her bubbling laughter caught my attention. I couldn’t help but grin because it was so contagious, and she’d noticed. Already a couple drinks in, she pointed right at me and shouted, “Hey. You’re cute. Come be my partner.”

Here's my issue with some dudes.

It’s late, I’m out with my girlfriend, who’s quite feminine and dresses in a very, very girly way, often puts lots of make up on. And we’re attending a social event, lots and lots of people around to talk to. And at some point I’m going for drinks and an old acquaintance of mine picks up a conversation with me on the way. Everything’s completely cool, except that whilst we’re talking, in the distance I see my girlfriend talking with this big dude. At first I’m like.. oh, okay. But then something bugged me quite a little bit, because I know her well and I couldn’t help but notice that she seemed kind of uncomfortable. So I excuse myself and approach them, and the very moment she saw me, she hooked her arm around mine, smiled and politely introduced me. In this introduction, the words “that’s my girlfriend” were present. She looked rather bugged herself, so I sort of figured out what was going on. His reaction was “cool”. But what surprised me was that he continued to look at her in that very flirtatious way and talk to her that way too, despite my presence.

So we were just about to leave, and the guy stops us, still smiling, didn’t seemed bothered at all, and straight up asked her if she’d like them to meet up sometime. She kindly refuses, whilst I’m already boiling inside. Then on our way, he asks her about full name so that he can add her on Facebook. To which I react with a “fucking what?” I got very, very, very freaking angry and he told me to “chill”. Chill? Chill my ass. You fucking touch my girlfriend, I don’t care if I’m 5'5 tall, I’ll punch you in the face, break your nose, and then I’ll get into a fight with you.

It bugs me, because I’ve seen guys do it before, but then the boyfriend of the girl shows up, and it’s like they just back off. But then I’m the girlfriend that showed up and he didn’t give a damn. It bugs me, because something like this doesn’t happen for the first time.

Ye, I’m a girl and that’s my girlfriend, you freaking bother her and you’re gonna wish I was a guy.

PSA: This is still relevant. I hope this is on every dashboard and that you read it all. This was back in 2009. Taylor Swift was 19 at the time and describing something that is still so real today. She’s describing all the same crap she still goes through today. Except today it’s social media and all the slut shaming and double standards you guys hold. I wish you would step into her shoes for a day, read the harassment that people send her on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc, and then multiply that by 8 years. Then maybe Taylor Swift would not be your exception to supporting women.

Missing at Sea - The Disappearance of Rebecca Coriam

24-year-old Rebecca Coriam’s dream finally came true in 2010 when she beat hundreds of applicants and got the job on the Disney cruise ship, “Disney Wonder.” It was a much sought after job and Rebecca was perfect for the role - she was outgoing, bubbly, and could connect with children. After being hired, Rebecca travelled to Florida to train for the job at Disney World. Rebecca spent four months at sea in the Bahamas before going home for two months. Afterwards, she returned to America to work on the Disney Wonder which was sailing from Los Angeles to Mexico. The 1,000 foot ship could accommodate 2,400 passengers in 875 staterooms plus 1,000 crew members.

On the 22nd of March, 2011, Rebecca’s parents’ received an alarming phone call from Rebecca’s colleague. Rebecca hadn’t turned up for her shift that morning. When a colleague went to her bedroom, she wasn’t there nor did she respond to her name being called from the public address system. A crew member decided to trawl the cctv footage from the past 24 hours. At 5:45am, Rebecca was spotted speaking on the phone in the crew area. She appears to be distraught. A young man approaches her and asks if she is okay to which she replies: “Yeah, fine,” before walking away. This is the last ever sighting of Rebecca. Later, people would suspect that maybe Rebecca had been a victim of sexual assault. In the video she is clearly distraught and is wearing men’s clothing. She was in the vicinity of the medical centre which was situated on the same deck.

After it became evident that Rebecca was certainly missing, the U.S. coastguard was notified as well as the FBI. As the search on the ocean was underway, Rebecca’s parents’ were en route to the Disney Wonder. The Bahamian police would announce to Rebecca’s parents’ that they believed she had been washed overboard by a large wave and that foul play wasn’t suspected. After just a day of investigation, police were satisfied with this explanation. They questioned some crew members but never bothered to question any passengers. Police even gave her parents’ a flip flop that they claimed was Rebecca’s. It had been found at the edge of Deck 5, where she was supposedly washed overboard. However, the flip flop had someone else’s signature and cabin number. It didn’t belong to Rebecca at all.

After Rebecca’s parents’ went back to Britain, they discovered that somebody had been using Rebecca’s bank card. Another glimmer of hope that she was still alive came in September, when somebody changed her password on Facebook. They decided to investigate further and uncovered a crew member on the ship had said “Disney knows exactly what happened. That phone called she had? It was taped. Everything here is taped.” Many, including Rebecca’s family, believe that Disney knew exactly what happened to Rebecca but are covering up to save face and to protect their brand. To this day, Rebecca is still listed as being missing at sea.
