You fixed you (y/f/c) dress and made sure your makeup was perfect before grabbing the small blue cupcake with a single candle that was on the table and exited your room. It was your boyfriend, Hank McCoy’s birthday today and you spent the last couple of weeks planning this huge surprise party for him. It was about time Hank had one fun night for himself.
You made your way down to the lab when you saw Jean and Scott walking down the hall towards the rest of the party. Jean gave you a thumbs up and Scott flashed you a wide smile. You put your finger to your lips to keep them quiet and pointed your hand towards the party, telling them to go. They nodded and made their way as you silently opened the lab door and made your way in. You smiled when you saw Hank in his natural habitat. Books and papers scattered everywhere, equations written on every inch of the white board and him in his white lab coat bent over a microscope focusing on whatever he was looking at and taking notes every other minute.
You quietly lit the candle with the lighter you stole from Logan and tiptoed to Hank. You tapped him on the shoulder. He slightly jumped, turned around and smiled when he saw you. “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to the greatest boyfriend in the entire world. Happy birthday to you! Now, close your eyes and make a wish!” Hank closed his eyes, smiled and blew. You set the cupcake on the table and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Hank smiled and went straight back to look at the microscope. “Hank, how about you take one night off all the science stuff and have fun? It’s your birthday!”
“I can’t. I’m so close to finally getting the correct DNA codes for this mutation. I just can’t stop now.”
You slid on his lap and wrapped your arms around his neck. “Please. For me.” You extended each “e” and gave him your puppy dog face that you knew he couldn’t resist.
“(Y/n), I can’t -. But I -. I need to- Okay. Okay. I’ll stop all the science stuff tonight just for you.” He gave you a kiss on the nose and you jumped up and cheered. As Hank was organizing his desk and hanging his lab coat, you quickly peeked your head out of the door and found Jubilee hiding behind a tree. You gave her a thumbs up and she gave you one back before running to the party.
“Hey, what are you doing?” Hank asked.
“Nothing.” You said, as you stood up straight again. “Um, you ready to go?”
“Yah.” You linked your fingers with Hank’s as you both made your way out of the lab.
“You look really beautiful tonight by the way.”
“Oh Hank. You always know how to make a girl blush don’t you?”
You finally made it to the door of the lobby and held it open. “After you birthday boy?” Hank walked in, with you shortly after.
“SURPRISE!” All the lights turned on and everyone jumped out of their hiding spots. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANK!” Someone set off a small confetti bomb with balloons and it went everywhere.
“What? Is this for me?” Hank turned to you and laughed.
You nodded and said “Happy birthday baby” and gave him a long kiss on the lips. Everyone cheered and you smiled and hugged Hank.
Hank went off to hug everyone and give them thank you’s and you stayed behind. After giving Hank a hug, Jubilee ran up to you. “So what do you think of the set up? Peter helped me hang some decorations when you left to get ready. We moved a few things around and added more food to the table. You know how hungry us x-men can get.”
“Yes, it’s perfect. Thank you so much for the help.” You gave her a hug. “And thank you too Peter!” Peter turned his face away from the food table and nodded his head giving you a thumbs up. You and Jubilee laughed as Peter tried to stuff a third Twinkie into his already full mouth.
Jubilee went off the dance with Kurt and Ororo. Rogue tried to pull you in, but you stayed and told them you had to full up the table. Rogue gave you a sad smile and Bobby made you promise that he would get a least one dance tonight. Rogue lightly punched his arm and you just laughed and crossed your fingers, telling him that he will definitely get that dance.
You walked to the table and saw half of all the food and plates where almost completely gone. You made your self a cup of punch and made a face at the funny taste. You looked up and Warren was smiling at you and you instantly knew that he spiked the punch. He probably messed with the brownies too. God, this mansion was so full of much sin. You shook your head and continued to drink. At least you knew the drink would make this party a little bit more fun.
You were filling back up the last chip bowl when you felt hands wrap around your waist and familiar lips kiss your neck. “Come dance with me.”
“I can’t. I gotta fill the food up. Geez, do you know how much food these kids can eat?”
“It’s okay. There’s enough food. Now come dance. It’s my birthday.” He kissed you again.
“Okay. Okay.” Hank held your hand and led you to the middle of the dance floor. You wrapped your arms around his neck and he held your waist tightly close to his body. He swayed you back and forth even though the song wasn’t a slow one and everyone around you was jumping up and down to the beat.
“So, this is what you’ve been doing all week. You did this all by yourself?”
“Well not entirely by myself. Jubilee helped me set up and Peter helped her with the decorations and everything. But I planned this for you. You needed one day where you weren’t so stuck up in that lab of yours. And I thought what perfect way to do it than a surprise birthday party! So, were you surprise?”
“Actually, I really was. No one has ever thrown me a surprise birthday party before.”
“Are you serious?” Your mouth dropped.
“Nope, this is my first one. And I have you to thank. You are the greatest girlfriend ever. I love you so much.”
Hank was kissing you and you pulled back. “Oh. Your birthday present!” You dragged him to the table and gave him a small blue box with a gold ribbon. He opened it and pulled out a lab coat with “Hank P. McCoy, PhD” perfectly inscribed on the top left above the pocket. He laughed when he pulled out a small bow tie with the periodic table printed on it.
“I know it’s not much. And I know it’s not the greatest present ever but I -” You were cut off when Hank pulled you into a kiss.
“I love it. And I love you.” Hank gave you a quick peck on the check and you smiled.
You leaned in and seductively whispered, “And that’s only part one. Part two is back in our bed.” You moved Hank’s hand up to your waist and showed him that the dress was the only thing that you were wearing tonight. You bite your lip and Hank gave you his little smirk that you loved.
“Happy birthday babe.” You pulled Hank into a kiss and he wrapped his arms around your waist pulling you in, closing any space left between the two of you. Hank pulled back to catch his breathe but you pulled on his collar and brought his lips back to yours. Hank put one hand on your ass and the other on the small of your back holding you close. You brushed your fingers through his soft brown hair as you kiss him back, needing him.
You heard a loud roar of “oohs” and whistles and you pulled back and saw that the entire party was watching your small makeout session. You felt you face burn red with embarrassment and you hid it in Hank’s neck when someone, most likely Alex, scream “Get a room!”
Luckily, Jean came and pulled you and Hank and screamed “Time to blow out the candles!”. Peter rolled the big cake topped with edible beakers and test tubes full of sparkler candles. As everyone was singing the birthday song, Hank leaned in and said “Thank you so much. You’re the only thing I could ever want. I love you.”
Last night was amazing. Hank had decorated your entire apartment with rose petals leading to your bedroom. In your room, there were candles lit everywhere with more rose petals on the bed. At the foot of your bed stood your lover with a dorky smile on his face, holding even more roses. You thanked him for all of the flowers and well, one thing led to another.
You expected to wake up next to your favorite scientist but instead you woke up in a pool of sheets and not in your lovers arms. You stretched out your arms and decided to get out of bed. Stark naked. So you took the white button up from last night and wore that. You walked out of the room, noticing that he cleaned up the rose petals. You smelled an amazing aroma from the kitchen and walked over there to see Hank looking stressed with an apron on. You snuck up behind him and put your arms around his waist, feeling his abs on the other side of his long torso. “Morning blue.” You sighed. He turned around so that your face was now in his chest.
“You were supposed to stay in bed. I was making you breakfast and everything.” He chuckled, kissing the top of your head. You stayed like that for a while, not noticing the world around you. You leaned up wanting to kiss him but you were interrupted by the smell of something burning. But before you can say anything, the smoke alarm went off. Hank had a look of panic in his eyes, hurriedly checking the stove. You backed away, giggling a bit at how flustered he look. Feeling useless, you went to go disarm the annoying smoke detector.
Once you were done with that, you looked behind you to see how Hank was doing. He was still freaking out. “What did you burn?” You asked, moving to sit by the island.
“Ummmm, ugh. It was the bacon (or whatever).” He struggled while scratching the back of his neck. “And the eggs…..” He looked so sad but all you did was laugh.
His head perked up. “I mean the coffee/tea is okay.” Hank smiled as he poured some of the warm liquid into a mug before handing it to you. “Thank you. Besides, I don’t need you to cook for me to know that you love me cause I see it in your eyes every day.” You confirmed with a loving look in your eyes. He walked up between your thighs, put your mug down, and started kissing his way down your neck.
Before he could even begin to pleasure you any further, you heard a ding. Hank turned around as fast as he could to get the rest of your breakfast together. You heard him sigh. “What’s wrong?” You asked, getting off the counter and closer to your lover. “I-I burnt the toast too.” He replied with red cheeks. You laughed, putting your fingers on his chin to drag his face toward yours for a kiss. “God I love you.” You whispered against his lips.
“I love you too.” Hank whispered, grabbing your waist. Recreating the magical night you both had.
“Oh my god, look! A puppy!” “(Y/N), that’s a fire hydrant,” Hank sighed, grabbing her shoulders and redirecting her towards the mansion. “Come along, we’re almost home.” “What are you talking about? We’re nowhere near home, silly. We’re in New York!” Her words slurred together as she stumbled forward, tripping over non-existent pieces of rubble in the street. He just chuckled to himself and steadied her, keeping her upright. “Remind me not to let you drink ever again, okay?” He shook his head. Apparently, a night out with friends is equal to getting blackout drunk on shots of tequila and margaritas. “Oh, c’mon Hank, you’re no fun,” (Y/N) hiccuped. He led her to the front door and helped her climb the steps into the house. He brought her up the staircase and around the corner to his bedroom. There was no way he was leaving her all alone in her own room. She could spend the night with him then go on her way in the morning when she was sober.
“I need your help,” you said, blushing with embarrassment.
“With what?” He asked.
“Well, you’re really smart and all, and I want to pass my biology final, so I figured I should ask you to be my study buddy,” you smiled, shyly. Hank had been your friend since the day you stepped foot in the mansion, but that didn’t make asking for help any less nerve wracking.
“Oh, yeah! Sure. I’ll meet you in your room later, okay?” Hank grinned, pushing up his glasses. You let out a breath of relief, finally feeling at ease.
“Thanks, Hank. You’re the best,” she said, “but I have to warn you, my room is haunted.”
“Wait, what?” Hank asked, but you were already far gone.
A few hours later, Hank and you were sat on your dormitory floor, surrounded by papers and notebooks and study guides.
“Okay, so you have to write an essay about Darwin’s theory, right?” Hank asked, thumbing through the pages of a textbook in front of him.
“That is correct, Professor Brainiac,” you laughed at his annoyed face. Hank had graduated college at 17 and was working at the Academy as the scientist and engineer of the X-Men. He was a true genius in your eyes. A cute, sweet, dorky, lovable one who stole your heart from ‘hello’.
“(Y/N)?” He asked, waving his hand in your face.
“W-what?” You asked, snapping out of your trance.
“You zoned,” he chuckled. “What were you thinking about?”
“Oh, nothing,” you blushed, gazing down at all the scattered notes.
“Okay, well, we should start by seeing if you know the content. I’ll quiz you,” he said. Right as the words left his mouth, the room was blanketed in pitch black canvas.
“Hank?” You called out, body tense.
“I’m right here,” he said, placing a hand on your shoulder. You jumped. “It’s just a power outage. Are you alright?”
“Uh … yeah,” you mumbled, eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. You jumped again when you heard a loud noise down the hall.
“Are you afraid of the dark?” He asked, incredulously.
“W-what? No! No, of course not! That’s ch-childish!” You exclaimed.
“Oh my god! You are!” Hank Laughed in disbelief.
“S-so what? Do you have any idea what lurks in the dark? Demons, ghosts! Murderers and thieves!” You countered.
“Ghosts?” Hank asked.
“Yes, ghosts! My room is haunted, remember?” You said, looking over at him, finally able to see his figure in the blackness. He was smiling. “Stop laughing at me!”
“I’m not! It’s just cute!” Hank defended himself. You faltered for a second. Had he just called her cute?
A loud crash rang through the room, causing you to scream. Hank wrapped his arms around you in an attempt to calm you down.
“What was that?” You asked, panicking. He shrugged, looking around the dark room.
“I think your lamp fell over,” Hank said. He stood up, letting you go to investigate. He picked up the lamp and set it back on the bedside table. “Oh, look. Your torch is here. How convenient?”
“I told you my room was haunted,” you cried out.
“What are you talking about? The lamp was probably just unbalanced and it tipped over. Nothing to worry about,” Hank said, turning on the torchlight and pulling open the curtains on the window.
“How coincidental that it had to fall right when the power went out, right?” You asked, sarcastically.
“Exactly,” Hank said, not joking. You sighed and watched as he looked out the window. “It looks like this whole part of town is at a loss of electricity. Must be the storm that’s coming.”
You groaned, walking up to him. He smiled down at you and wrapped his arm around your shoulder.
“So, what do we do until the power comes back on?” You asked.
“We could start studying?” He offered. You groaned again and he laughed. “I’m kidding. We could just hang out for awhile.”
“Okay.” You said, heading over to sit on your bed. Hank sat down across from you.
“What do you wanna do?” Hank asked.
“Truth or dare,” you challenged.
“Alright. You start,” he grinned nervously. You rubbed your hands together, thinking of evil dares and cringeworthy truths.
“Truth or dare?” you asked.
“Truth,” Hank said.
“What is your most embarrassing moment?” You smirked.
“When I was seen, I was in a higher level class and I was asked to come up and solve a question on the board. It was my first day there, and I got so nervous that I threw up in the bin in the middle of my explanation,” he blushed. You giggled.
“Oh god, that’s terrible,” you laughed.
“Yeah, I know. Okay, truth or dare?”
“Dare,” you smiled.
“I dare you to tell me the cheesiest joke you know,” he challenged.
“Alright. What do you call cheese that isn’t yours?” You asked, taking the ‘cheesiest’ part literally.
“What?” He sighed.
“Nacho cheese!” you exclaimed. He laughed, shaking his head.
“That’s horrible,” he chuckled. You nodded, beginning to laugh yourself.
“Exactly,” you giggled, only to jump and hold in a scream as a pounding was heard on a door down the hall. Hank pulled you into a hug again, calming you down.
“It’s just some students coming back to their rooms,” he explained.
“O-okay,” you stuttered out. You shook, trying to rid yourself of the fear. “Truth or dare?”
“Dare,” he said, feeling brave. You smiled.
“I dare you to go out there and kiss your crush,” you smiled. He laughed a little, blushing. He leant forward a bit and placed a kiss on your cheek. You froze.
“W-wait. You like me?” You asked, confused. He nodded, face as red as a cherry.
“Yeah. Sorry,” he said softly, rubbing the back of his neck. You smiled brightly, turning around in his embrace and kissing him full on the lips.
“Huh?” Hank asked after you pulled away.
“I like you too, nerd,” you said, grinning like an idiot.
Title: X-Men: Blue
Issue Number: 2
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Jorge Molina
What I Liked: This issue expanded on the characters and their individual stories. There was some action (albeit in the danger room). It also set up some teasers for future stories without it feeling forced.
What I Didn’t Like: Magneto sneaking around behind the X-Men’s backs just after slightly gaining their trust is a bit disappointing. I hope it’s not all as it appears.
Overall: A strong, story driven second issue.
[update: quick colored versions] thinking about what is happening to the All-New X-Men gang (i.e. the original 5), I thought that it would maybe make more sense to turn this team into a time-travelling dimension-hopping team, trying desperately to find a way back to their own time and timeline.
This would be the classic team of ANGEL, CYCLOPS,ICEMAN, BEAST, MARVEL GIRL, with the help of TEMPUS and X-23, they would visit countless other alternate dimensions.
