While the Department of Unexpected Interspecies Friendship was still cooing over the cuteness of a pair of owl and pussycat friends in Japan, they learned about another impossibly cute bond in São Paolo, Brazil. 30 hours and 2 flights later they were delighting in the camaraderie between Bob the Golden Retriever and his BFFs, 2 zebra finches, 2 cockatiels, 4 parakeets, and one plump little grey hamster.

Bob and his wee pals live with their human who shares lots of photos of their life together on Instagram. Although he towers over every one of them, Bob is a gentle giant who enjoys playing, lounging, and even cuddling up with his bird and hamster friends. Bob’s human posts adorable videos of the group as well.

“They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon…”

The Department of Unexpected Interspecies Friendship is seriously considering setting up a permanent satellite office in Japan. Their latest discovery is an inseparable pair made up of one Scottish Fold Kitten named Marimo and a Little Owl named Fuku. That’s right friends, these two are the makings of a real-life version of “The Owl and the Pussycat.”

This adorable pair live together at Hukulou Coffee, an owl-themed cafe in Osaka, Japan, along with a few more owls and sometimes a bunny friend too. They hang out on perches together looking cute as can be. But the best times are the cuddly shared naps and goodnight kisses:

Head over to the Hukulou Coffee Twitter feed for more photos of this awesomely sweet pair of furred and feathered friends.

Bullies couldn’t stop this 8-year-old from growing out his hair for charity

When Florida 8-year-old Christian McPhilamy became interested in cancer research after watching a commercial for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, he decided to do what he could to help those in need. In the absence of a fat checkbook, McPhilamy did the next best thing: He literally gave the hair off his head to those struggling with cancer and other conditions like alopecia. But the story wasn’t as easy as that.

Today the Department of Awesomely Good Deeds salutes the staff at Tampa International Airport who took a sad lost toy situation and turned it into an awesome adventure with a very happy ending. 6-year-old Owen Lake accidentally left his beloved stuffed tiger Hobbes at the airport before boarding flight to Houston. He didn’t realize he’d forgotten his friend until the plane was in the air, but his family called their airport right after they landed in Texas. The airport janitorial crew found Hobbes and the Lake family was assured that the tiger was safe and would be waiting for Owen at the airport Lost & Found.

But when the family got back to Tampa they were amazed to learn that Hobbes had been busy while he was separated from his BFF. Airport Operations Center Manager Tony D’Auito had taken him on a tour of the airport, taking photos with him visiting staff members and checking out different areas of the airport and the jobs done there.

“D’Auito, with the help of TPA police, airlines, operations staff, the USO and others all over the airport campus, photographed Hobbes on his great adventures: outside by the air traffic control tower, buying gelato, working out at the employee gym, playing Jenga in the USO, hanging out with the firefighters, napping in a hammock by the Marriott pool, riding a luggage cart.”

Then D’Auito had the photos printed as a book, which was presented to Owen when he arrived to pick up Hobbes:

A high school student in China has spent three years literally shouldering the responsibility of ensuring that his physically disabled best friend gets to all his classes.

18-year-old Xie Xu met his 19-year-old classmate Zhang Chi when the pair began attending school together at Daxu High School in Xuzhou, a large city in the northern province of Jiangsu, in China.

Zhang suffers from muscular dystrophy, a condition that weakens skeletal muscle which often makes it very difficult for those with the disease to walk or carry their own weight.
