he's not even interesting

Something brilliant about the new BatB movie

Of all the changes they made, I feel like one stood out as being the most subtly ingenious - setting up Gaston as an outsider to the town like Belle was, but in a vastly different way.

First off, paying close attention, it becomes clear that Gaston views the town much like Belle does. When he says that it’s “simple”, he means it. And he strides in literally above everyone else on his horse, looking down on them. Gaston realizes that the townspeople are simple minded and that the town is provincial. While they bully and scorn Belle, he doesn’t (at least not in the same fashion or for the same reasons). You could argue that he only doesn’t mock her because he’s trying to gain her favor, but there is no indication that he would have ever had a problem with her reading or teaching other girls to read. He even fakes interest in her books instead of reprimanding her for her “funny” hobbies; he may have looked at this interest in a patronizing way, but it didn’t seem to personally offend him (like his cartoon counterpart who directly states that she shouldn’t be reading books).

He also didn’t seem the type to get upset at Belle or any other woman finding a more convenient way to do chores. And when LeFou tells him the town is bullying her because of this, he doesn’t seem surprised at all by their behavior, almost as if he expected it. We also see hints of his being removed from the town when he tries to “comfort” Belle about the headmaster - I think he’s being truthful here when he says he wasn’t liked either. And, again, he outright tells Belle that their town is simple and that this is all they can expect.

It’s also telling that he finds Belle “outrageously attractive”; some may interpret this as him merely wanting a conquest (which it partly is, no doubt), but I think he also is genuinely attracted to her uniqueness - he finds her argumentative and independent personality appealing, which would seem to imply some sort of free thinking and cleverness on his own part. In some weird, perhaps essentially inaccurate way, Gaston sees him and Belle as sort of kindred spirits - both too good for this town and this life, the “best” that belong together.

Let me digress a bit because now the question comes up as to why he stays in town and doesn’t seek his own “adventure in the great wide somewhere” (which, perhaps, his hunting is a substitute for). I think the answer to this is pretty clear - he’s found a small safe haven where he can get the admiration his low self-esteem obviously needs so that he can keep functioning at basic human levels. Due to sexism, Gaston’s outsiderness is treated very differently by the townspeople than Belle’s. Belle and Gaston are both detached and removed from the general masses, but whereas Belle is ostracized and side-eyed, Gaston is put on a pedestal and idolized (just compare the songs “Belle” and “Gaston”). Logically, this may have something to do with his very real accomplishments as a captain, but it’s also very much rooted in gender roles (Belle has stepped outside hers, while Gaston has not). But if Gaston were to leave, would he find himself being treated as special in larger cities? Probably not. And we see what can happen when Gaston’s self-value plummets - a screw pops loose in his head and he begins literally rampaging, hurting innocent people all in an effort to avoid facing reality.

Back to the main point - one effect of making Gaston seemingly just as aware of the town’s flaws is that it sets him up as much more intelligent than the cartoon. He stays in this town because he’s worshiped, but you can tell he’s looking down his nose at them the whole time, encapsulated by his treatment of the fawning girls. This aligns with this new incarnation’s cleverness. Unlike the cartoon, this Gaston is not dumb. Belle calls him “brainless” because he’s not well-read, but he is in no way dumb. He’s probably not illiterate (he went to school, and he does quote Shakespeare), and he’s more than proficient at gaslighting and manipulating people to do what he wants. He’s also a clever strategist and soldier.

So what does this all mean in terms of character? Why make Gaston as aware of the town’s narrow-minded provincial nature as Belle? Why make him smarter? Well, this has multiple added effects.

1) It means he’s good at evaluating people - he reads and plays the people in the town easily, which makes the ending mob scene much more believable. He rallies these people not just because they admire him (arguably less than the cartoon town did), but because he knows what they want to hear and can play on their narrow minded prejudices (it’s interesting to wonder if he even believed any of the things he was saying about the beast himself). It also means that he may be fully aware of LeFou’s affections for him, and was choosing to ignore it and/or use it when necessary.

2) It also means that his failure to acknowledge Belle’s feelings about marrying him are not due to obliviousness or stupidity; he is willfully deluding himself into thinking he has a chance. This adds an element of instability to him that becomes more and more dangerous as the movie progresses (just watch his reaction to Belle closing the door on his face - that’s some hardcore reality avoidance). Gaston’s sanity and self-worth is holding on by the thread he’s created in his own mind that he’ll win Belle.

3) It makes him scarier as well. Cartoon Gaston was scary because he was big. This Gaston is scary because you can see him evaluating, judging, and plotting. You can see him using his looks to get what he wants and, unlike the cartoon, affecting a sort of tender sincerity to deflect suspicion. His ability to be metaphorically outside looking in at this village makes him capable of manipulating everyone, except Maurice (and you can see how Gaston handles that)

4) It humanizes him too. One can’t help but wonder what he would have been like without that fatal need to be liked and admired and with some sort of societal boundaries to keep his ego and entitlement in check. Or if he had simply taken Belle’s rejection as the lesson in humility it should have been and used it to evaluate himself and his qualities, instead of letting it destroy him so much that his behavior devolves into irrationality and outright cruelty, even towards those that he seemed to care about at least a little at first (LeFou and even Belle). In fact, his transformation is a mirror reverse of the Beast’s - Gaston transforms into a monster as the movie goes on, while the Beast becomes more humanized. Both the beast and Gaston are subjected to a lesson in humility, and react in very different ways.

Overall, I think if Disney had simply recreated the cartoon version of Gaston, he would have been a laughingstock - a character that seemed too unrealistic and static. But by rounding him out, he becomes dynamic and I think he’ll probably live on in this version as one of the best Disney characters (not just villains) of all time.

Recommendations ~ Four Days

He had come in every morning for four days. And while Eleanor didn’t want to even kid herself that he’d be interested in her, she couldn’t help but feel like he was there for her. She was on bar again this morning and they were, thankfully, slow so she was casually resting against the bar talking with coworkers when he walked in with his normal entourage of guys. She gave the group a smile as her coworker called out a good morning. She looked back down at the bar though as to avoid embarrassing herself, which to her displeasure happened more often than not. She was wiping away the invisible spots on the bar when they came to the front to begin ordering. She could pick his voice out from among the group and she reveled in the deep husky tone it took on. She heard a few of the drinks and began on them since there were no others. She heard him ask her coworker what she recommended if he wanted something not too sweet but with enough caffeine to get him through the day. She immediately thought of a drink, but her shy nature kept her from speaking up. No matter how much she wanted to. Her coworker was hesitating and it was irking her as she knew what would be good, not to mention her annoyance at herself for not being brave enough to speak up. Finally she heard her coworker ask for her and Eleanor turned her head and caught his eye before looking to her coworker.
“Yes?”
“He wants something strong, but not too sweet and not black. What should he get?” She looked back at him and gave him a small smile before suggesting.
“I’d go for a cold brew with some vanilla and nonfat milk. It’s our strongest iced coffee and the vanilla brings out a really nice flavor in it.” Eleanor swallowed and congratulated herself on not stuttering or messing up her words when she talked to him. He grinned at her and nodded his head at her then said to her coworker.
“I’ll have one of those then please.” He never took his eyes off Eleanor and she blushed looking back at her bar and the drinks she was making. His group paid and then trickled towards the end of the bar, well all of them except him and another tall man with a slight beard and a backwards SnapBack. They stopped right before her bar and talked together while watching her make their drinks. It made her nervous and she hyper focused on the drinks rather than the attractive man before her.
“Thank you for your recommendation, by the way.” She looked up startled as she realized that he was talking to her. She smiled weakly and replied.
“No problem, I hope you like it.” His lips quirked up slightly and she quickly looked back down at the drinks. Her and her bar partner finished them all within five minutes and it was time for them to go. There wasn’t anyone else in the cafe and there were no drive thru drinks so she leaned back up against the bar and watched his group from under her eyelashes. They were walking out the door when he turned and looked back. He saw her watching, and for once in her life instead of turning away embarrassed she instead smiled at him. He returned her smile and put up a hand as a wave as he exited the building. She looked down with a grin on her face as she let the blush on her cheeks. She couldn’t wait for tomorrow.

I know this has been discussed countless times, but I still can’t help but wonder if Kylo already knew about her. Not from already having met her, but maybe from a vision like the ones she had.

‘Cause honestly, he reacted so strongly to “the girl”, and that thing about “the girl I’ve heard so much about”. Not to mention, in the interrogation he’s like “You still want to kill me” like he’s actually so surprised. The whole thing is weirdly personal I mean she’s his guest and he’s waiting for her to wake up, it’s nothing like Poe’s interrogation.

And I mean, just the way he looks at her in general.

I forgot where I was going with this. Point is, he seems interested in her since their first meeting, even since before then. At first it’s like he’s cautious and then it’s like he’s slowly becoming infatuated and by the end of the movie he’s half in love with her.

To Trump voters

Clears throat…

  1. He called Hillary Clinton a crook. You bought it. Then he paid $25 million to settle a fraud lawsuit.
  2. He said he’d release his tax returns, eventually. You bought it. He hasn’t, and says he never will.
  3. He said he’d divest himself from his financial empire, to avoid any conflicts of interest. You bought it. He is still heavily involved in his businesses, manipulates the stock market on a daily basis, and has more conflicts of interest than can even be counted.
  4. He said Clinton was in the pockets of Goldman Sachs, and would do whatever they said. You bought it. He then proceeded to put half a dozen Goldman Sachs executives in positions of power in his administration.
  5. He said he’d surround himself with all the best and smartest people. You bought it. He nominated theocratic loon Mike Pence for Vice President. A white supremacist named Steve Bannon is his most trusted confidant. Dr. Ben Carson, the world’s greatest idiot savant brain surgeon, is in charge of HUD. Russian quisling Rex Tillerson is Secretary of State.
  6. He said he’d be his own man, beholden to no one. You bought it. He then appointed Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, whose only “qualifications” were the massive amounts of cash she donated to his campaign.
  7. He said he would “drain the swamp” of Washington insiders. You bought it. He then admitted that was just a corny slogan he said to fire up the rubes during the rallies, and that he didn’t mean it.
  8. He said he knew more about strategy and terrorism than the Generals did. You bought it. He promptly gave the green light to a disastrous raid in Yemen- even though all his Generals said it would be a terrible idea. This raid resulted in the deaths of a Navy SEAL, an 8-year old American girl, and numerous civilians. The actual target of the raid escaped, and no useful intel was gained.
  9. He said Hillary Clinton couldn’t be counted on in times of crisis. You bought it. He didn’t even bother overseeing that raid in Yemen; and instead spent the time hate-tweeting the New York Times, and sleeping.
  10. He called CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times “fake news” and said they were his enemy. You bought it. He now gets all his information from Breitbart, Gateway Pundit, and InfoWars.
  11. He promised to never be the kind of president who took cushy vacations on the taxpayer’s dime, not when there was so much important work to be done. You bought it. He took his first vacation after 11 days in office. On the taxpayer’s dime. And went golfing.

and that’s just the first month.

anonymous asked:

"Chat, are you... jealous of Adrien?!"

“Chat, are you… jealous of Adrien?!” Alya giggled.

“What!? No! That would be ridiculous!” Chat’s voice rose an octave.

“You know Marinette only has a crush on him because she has a hero complex,” Alya said smoothly. Chat’s eyes widened as he gave her a sidelong glance.

“She- she does?” Chat asked hesitantly.

“Uh huh! He saved her from a storm with an umbrella, if he hadn’t done that she wouldn’t even be remotely interested. I’m telling you save her once and she’ll be smitten,” Alya assured him.

“Who said I wanted her to be smitten with me?” Chat asked indignantly. Alya fixed him with a look.

“Please Chat, it’s written all over you’re face! You totally like-” Alya started only to be interrupted by Chat Noir.

“- am totally in love with her,” Chat whispered as he stared longingly towards the trap door on Marinette’s balcony.

“YOU WHAT!?!” Alya shrieked.

Wow there are a lot of these!!! But for now I must sleep. More to finish up tomorrow.

More Damian as a college student: My college had an orientation weekend for all the freshmen, which is pretty common as far as I’m aware, but it pretty much felt like summer camp for 400 some freshmen with like 100 upperclassmen running things and I just couldn’t help thinking of what Damian would have done and ended up writing this drabble.

“Hi everyone, I’m Hannah your O-group leader and I’d like to welcome you all to your first semester! So what we’re going to do is some get to know you games. First though how about we just go around the circle and say our name, where we’re from, and one fun fact about ourselves. So my name’s Hannah, I’m from Coast City and I spent the summer working as an intern at Ferris Air.”

This continues to go around the circle and Damian learns his classmates play an array of sports and instruments, won various awards, and come from all over the country. By the time it gets to be his turn he has no suitable fun fact that wouldn’t compromise his identity.

“Hello. My name is Damian Wayne, I am from Gotham City and I-” am Robin, was trained to be an assassin since birth, have died and come back, count metas and a kryptonian as my best friends, I’ve led the teen titans, have been to space multiple times… “have a small wildlife preserve at my house. It includes a cow, some horses, dogs, cats, a turkey, and some more exotic animals.”

The introductions conclude and they move onto the next game, something called the Great Wind Blows. The whole circle stands and one person enters the middle, they say something about themselves and whoever else that applies to must run to another spot in the circle, the last one still moving ends up in the middle next. -tt- This is ridiculous. What could any of these people possibly have in common with myself. The first person is a girl who introduces herself as Joan and then she recites her fact as per the rules, “The great wind blows if you… have an adopted sibling!” Damian moves into the center of the circle, slightly in shock. Joan takes his spot and no one else has moved.

“You both have an adopted sibling?” Hannah asks kindly, trying to encourage them to share.

“My little sister, her name’s Emma. My parents adopted her when she was still a baby and I was four but I love her to pieces.”

“Damian?” Hannah prompts.

Damian gulps and stares at his classmates, “I have four adopted siblings actually, three older brothers and an older sister. Um, Richard, Jason, Timothy, and Cassandra.” Hannah smiles and nods at him and he realizes this is his cue to continue the game. “I’m Damian and the great wind blows if…” you are a black belt in at least one martial art, know how to fence, speak more than three languages fluently, regularly travel across the country… “you spend your summer on a farm or at summer camp.”

Quite a few other teens shuffle around and whoever moved must once again explain how it applies to them. A lot work as summer camp counselors but two others explain they spend summers on their grandparent’s farm or uncle’s vineyard. “A family friend is from Smallville, Kansas and his parents’ have myself, their grandson and a few other friends come stay for parts of the summer on their farm.”

Damian is surprised to find himself moving around the circle to things like “have a dog”, “have a black belt”, “rides horses”, “watch Disney movie marathons with friends”, “have inside jokes with your siblings”, “regularly prank another member of your family”, “one or more of your best friends live in another state”.

What was the most surprising was “have met a superhero”, since Hannah thought this was interesting and practically everyone moved she had them all go around and say which hero, herself having run into different Green Lanterns during her life in Coast City. A lot were “Superman” or “the Flash” two excitedly said they had both met Wonder Woman and Black Canary which prompted a side conversation that needed to be reeled back in.

It got around to Damian who grimaced, scrunched his eyes shut, and began listing as fast as he could, “Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Oracle, Red Hood, Black Bat, Batgirl, Red Robin, Abuse, Superman, both Superboys, the Flash, Kid Flash, Impulse, Arsenal, Green Arrow, Speedy, Black Canary, Catwoman, Huntress, Wonder Woman, Troia, Wonder Girl, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Miss Martian, Blue Beetle, Supergirl, Stargirl, Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, Mister Terrific, Ravager, Tempest, Aquaman, Doctor Fate, Raven, Beast Boy, Starfire, Cyborg and I’m positive there’s some I’m missing…” He opened his eyes to see the rest of the group staring at him in shock, mouths slack. He tried reclaiming an air of nonchalance, “My father funds Batman Inc. Over the years I have met some rather interesting people thanks to that.”

Another boy gave a low whistle, “Dude. You have got to tell me what it’s like meeting Batman.” Damian just smirked as they moved on.
