The 5 Elements of a LIKABLE Main Character

“I don’t like your main character. He’s kind of obnoxious.” my beta reader laughingly told me, after reading the first chapter of my novel.

On the surface, I looked like this:

Inside, I looked like this:

Aloud, I said “Oh, well, he’s kind of hard to understand. He changes by the end.”

Inside, I screamed “How could you not like him?! Do you have a heart?! Is there a void where your soul should be?! Are you actually a Dementor that’s really good at makeup? Well, I guess this is what the Dementors are doing after getting kicked out of Azkaban!”

Outside: “But I really enjoyed it!” *Hugs between broken writer and Dementor in disguise* “Thank you for reading!"

But you know what? That person that might be a soul-sucking cloaked demon creature? They were right. The character was unlikable, or more accurately, there was no reason to cheer him on. There was nothing to make the reader connect with him, relate to him, transfer themselves into his story, feel affection towards him.

And if the reader doesn’t connect with the character through empathy? Nothing else in the story can work. Everything relies on this one fictional person. The basic definition of story is "A flawed hero with a goal overcoming obstacles to reach that goal, and how that journey changes them.” So without character, you don’t have story. Without empathy from the reader, you don’t even have character.

So what is empathy when it comes to characters?

It’s the process of a reader transferring their own lives onto the character. When this happens, the character’s goal and inner desires, values and weaknesses, everything about them, become proxies for our own. We learn of a shared piece of human nature between us, something we have in common on a significant inner level, and suddenly we want to see this character succeed. Because now, they are us – and we want to see ourselves succeed in real life. We feel what they feel, we experience what they experience.

The best way to sum up character empathy in my opinion, is this quote from C.S.Lewis: “Friendship is born at the moment when one person says to another ‘Really? You too? I thought I was the only one!’”

That’s empathy.

Which doesn’t mean the character has to be an angelic little cherub …

There are characters that operate in a moral gray area, there are characters that are downright awful, there are characters that shouldn’t be lovable …but we love them. So this is NOT saying that a main character has to be a perfect angel that rescues baby squirrels when they’re not busy volunteering at the local soup kitchen, it just means there’s something WORTHWHILE in the character that persuades the reader to stick around. We need a reason to relate with that at-first-glance unlikable character. Just as we have flawed people in our own lives who we can forgive and love.

A good quote for this one would be this, by G.K.Chesterton: “That’s the great lesson of Beauty and the Beast; that a thing must be loved before it is lovable.”

So how does a writer accomplish a good empathetic connection?

Luckily for us, establishing this only takes a little planning in the beginning of the story. Certain elements foster empathy, elements which you can give to your character and display in the story. Making sure to incorporate a few of these will ensure that first connection between reader and character. A connection which you, the author, will then be able to grow. It’s this tiny first note of shared humanity which deepens into those important links we hold with characters. We’re living people, they’re imagined and comprised of words on a page; yet these people can be friends to us, family, mentors, role models, and become some of the most influential people in our lives.

And how does that begin? Evoking empathy.

And how do you evoke empathy? Well here are the characteristics that human beings instinctively identify with and admire …

– Courage (This is the one EVERY main character should possess. Gumption to pursue what they want separates main from background characters.)

– Humor (Wit charms us without fail.)

– Goal-Obsessed

– Hard-working

– Noble motivations

– Loving

– Loved by others

– Kind

– Treated unfairly

– In imminent danger, physically

– In imminent danger, emotionally

– In a sorrowful situation

– Smart/Expert at something

– Suffering from psychological weakness

– Haunted by something in their past

– Dissatisfied with current state of their life

– Lacking something like love, friendship, belonging, family, safety, freedom, etc

It’s a good plan to give your main character at least FIVE of these empathetic little “virtues.”

If this sounds like a resume, that’s kind of what it is. “Dear Potential Reader, I’m applying for the job of Main Character of this book series. I aspire to consume your every waking thought and drastically change your life, for better and worse.” It’s a diagram of the worthwhile traits of the hero, the characteristics that win us over, which promise the reader “If you follow my story, knowing me – and experiencing the story through me – will be well worth your time.”

These traits will be displayed in the set-up of the story, the first ten pages or so. But the story CANNOT stop to let the character exhibit these winning behaviors; the story must KEEP PROGRESSING, every empathetic element must be shown with a story reason for existing within a scene. Like exposition, empathy needs to be added in subtly, as the story motors onward, slipping into the reader’s knowledge without them noticing. If it’s a scene created for the express purpose of convincing the reader “This character is lovable! Love them! I said love them!” then it will be glaringly obvious and the reader will feel the exact opposite. (They’ll also feel that way about the author, incidentally.)

Now! How does this work?

Harry Potter:

Harry is the poster child for being treated unfairly. Yet in the face of the abusive treatment of his childhood, Harry is courageous. He does not succumb to the Dursley’s relentless campaign to stamp the magic out of him, and become a proper Dursley; though this would’ve won their approval, put him in their good graces, and made his life exponentially easier – but he didn’t do it. He knew they were wrong, knew what was right, and refused to become like them. So heck yes Sorting Hat, there is “plenty of courage, I see”. He was loved by his parents, by the three that dropped him off at his Aunt and Uncle’s, and by the majority of the Wizarding World. He’s also snarky, loving, and in constant danger.

Judy Hopps:

Every reason why we care about Judy is established in the first few scenes. She’s courageous. She’s funny. She’s loved by her parents. She’s motivated by noble values. Definitely goal oriented, hard working, and smart. She’s also in imminent danger, and being treated unfairly.

If we took out the pieces of the story meant to evoke our empathy, what would happen?

Nobody would care. Judy Hopps would have been an annoying, smug, and consumed by ruthless ambition. Harry Potter would have ceased to exist because everything about him is empathetic.

Establishing these early allows us to begin the process of temporarily transferring our lives into a story. Or in the case of some life-changing stories, not temporarily transferring, but letting them become part of our souls forever.

Yup, having your story connect with a reader forever starts with just a little empathy. Pretty useful.

Oh, and speaking of souls, give me mine back, Dementor reader. I learned how to make people like my characters. Now you’re out of the Azkaban job and the beta reading job.

Hey, y’all.  I was hoping to get a little help with something.  I know I’ve talked about my boyfriend on here before, and about how he wants to understand gender, specifically non-binary gender, better.  He was raised in a very conservative household where anything straying from the male-female was regarded as “socialist propaganda” and strongly dismissed, and it wasn’t until just a few years ago that the concept of gender theory was even available to him.  Now, he’s very respectful of gender identity and he would never intentionally misgender someone because he’s not a dick, but he feels that he would benefit from understanding the issues surrounding gender in addition to accepting them.

He and I have had countless discussions on the subject.  We tend to agree on most things and we generally reach the same conclusions, but our processes for arriving at those conclusions are different.  He’s very intelligent, but we think differently.  I’m a very abstract and theoretical thinker, but he is more concrete.  It makes for some awesome discussions (y’all should come over for dinner sometime), but it also means that the sources I read to learn about and understand gender theory, those that use very theoretical and abstract language and points, are not helpful to him.

So, this is where you lot come in.  You curious, brilliant people.  I am looking for good articles or journals or even books on gender theory that are helpful to a concrete mind.  Or, if any of my non-binary followers are willing, someone to sit down and patiently have a conversation with the man.  Send me sources!

I need a discussion

Ok so what I really side eye is when Andy always tries to act like in the moment of 6x10 Rick and Michonne both are just realizing their feelings like “of course”….. BUT I just feel like Rick had already figured out he wanted to be with Michonne because he had not only taken off his ring (like why the fuck would he do that unprovoked when he had it on during whatever the fuck he was doing with je****), but if you look back on the couch scene when he takes Michonne’s hand he is literally looking at her like “girl come here” instead of shook like Michonne who is like “damn I never even thought this would or could actually be a thing”…..

“No, not even in a million years.” Chat swallowed hard mentally kicking himself for what he was doing. Here Ladybug, the girl of his dreams, was asking for him to kiss her and he was saying no. What the hell was wrong with him?! Ladybug pouted her bottom lip as she avoided his gaze looking utterly heartbroken. Seriously, what the hell was wrong with him!?

“I guess I shouldn’t have assumed you would be okay with it,” Ladybug sighed. Chat ran a nervous hand through his hair. What was he doing?

“No Ladybug. I just- you caught me off guard is all. If you really need help I can-it’s really not a big deal,” Chat offered, voice tight. Ladybug looked back up at him hesitantly.

“Are you sure?” Ladybug asked cautiously. “I don’t want to cross any boundaries with you.”

“Don’t worry about it. It’s just a one time thing right?” Chat asked, every cell in his body begging for her to say it wasn’t just for this one time.

“Just this once,” She assured him. “I don’t want this to mean anything.” And with those words Chat could feel his chest tighten. Not trusting himself to speak he simply nodded. Slowly Ladybug reached for him wrapping her arms around his neck. Chat swallowed down the lump forming in his throat. What had he done? He was damned if he did and he was damned if he didn’t. Ladybug nervously chewed on her lip as she stood on her tip toes eyes falling on his mouth. Chat took a shaky breath before leaning in and placing his lips on hers.

Ladybug’s kiss was everything he imagined it to be and more. It was soft and sweet, and surprisingly tentative. She smelled like vanilla, and flowers. And every time she moved her lips against his his pulse sped up. This is what he had wanted for so long so why did it suddenly feel so wrong? Her fingers slid up into his hair. A soft groan crawled up his throat muffled by her kiss. More confident now Ladybug pressed herself against him kissing him more fervently now. Her fingers softly played with his messy hair, almost lovings as they combed their way through.

That’s when Chat lost it. He couldn’t do this! He couldn’t stand here and kiss the girl he loved when he knew it meant absolutely nothing to her. Chat reeled back. He could feel his heart in his throat. He panted as he looked at her with wide eyes.

“I’m sorry. I-I can’t do this,” He choked out.

“Chat I-” Before she could get the words out Chat was already running away and he wasn’t sure he would ever be able to stop.

Woo! Done with finals, but not taking messages right now - just finishing these up.

Okay, another story. One time, I was sitting in the staff room with a bunch of other people. I was just being goofy while joking with someone, wiggling my hands around (I think I was imitating a ghost for some reason). As I was doing that, I happened to catch my boss’ eye from the other end of the table. He thought I was doing one of those flirtatious finger-fluttering waves at him, and he looked surprised and hesitantly did it back. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s an example:

It was fucking disgusting and mortifying. He’s been avoiding me for a while. Kill me.

  • Jughead: Please, don't let them destroy the drive-in.
  • Mayor: Why should I do as you say?
  • Jughead: It's an important place for me. My family and I used to go there all the time and... It's... It's my safe place.
  • Mayor: I'm sorry, Mr. Jones. There's nothing I can do.
  • Riverdale fans: * burst in*
  • Mayor: What is the meaning of-
  • River dale fans: You can't let them destroy the Drive-in!!
  • Mayor: Oh, And why is that?
  • River dale fans: Because Jughead said so! Look at him! He's a precious child that needs to be protected!
  • Jughead: Hey, guys... I'm still here-
  • Riverdale fans: Shhhh... We got this.

A lot of people r saying ilian was forced into having sex with Octavia like Murphy was with Ontari. Do u think that is true?

Didn’t look like it to me. He was clearly able to overpower her. She asked him to make her feel something. Seems like he agreed.

Are we now equating consensual sex for reasons the audience doesn’t like to chains and death threats?

I think maybe people should rethink that.

I think we should also pay attention to what people are saying and think about where their ideas are coming from, their perspectives, their biases, and test out the theories with not just our own ideas, but also what actually happened in the story. People have a tendency to interpret things in a way that supports their previous theories. I’m pretty sure this one is based in Octavia hate. They hate her, so they look for more ways to make her evil.

Was that a beautiful love scene? No it was not. Was it rape? That’s reaching. And concerning.

...

I had to rewatch the Will it ‘smore? just because it was so amazing. It got me thinking about how last time Rhett and Link were on the show, Jimmy didn’t really know who they were and they were all a little stiff and formal.

This time they were almost like old buddies, and Jimmy kind of looked up to them (not just physically) instead of vice verca. I think he was a bit intimidated by Rhett, but he clearly was impressed by Link and his nonchalant way of sinking all those nasty smores. And then at the end of the segment Jimmy called them legends!

It’s funny how sometimes you don’t realize just how big and successful R&L are because they are so familiar to you and also so casual on GMM, but these two guys are really legends in what they do. Everything they do just amazes me.

And the best part about them is that they are still despite the fame and success, these two silly boys who do what they love. Which is why we love them.

the other day me and my friend were doing a freelance job painting a mural at this sports facility when this dad came up and asked for a card for the place. and we were like “oh we dont work here” and he was like “oh doing your homework then? yous guys in high school?” and i legit dropped my pen and stopped what i was doing and he said “college then?” and i was like “youre not going to believe this one buddy but i’m twenty five” but THE MORAL of the story is that this actually explains why teenage girls are always give me dirty looks??? like im not tryna steal yo mans??? or be judged about my fashion choices????? i am 2 old and 2 tired tiny teens. leave me be.

I’ve felt this way for a LOOOOONG time.

Did I want the “nasty rumors” to be true? OF COURSE NOT!

Did I want to dislike TF as much as I do? OF COURSE NOT!

But they were true, and it’s not looking good for him either, so… all I can say is

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know this is cliche, but this band saved mine and a lot of people’s lives. So, this change, back when it started in July, gutted me.

And then to be ridiculed and labeled as a conspiracy theorist fucking pissed me off because the evidence was overwhelming and people were willfully ignorant.

But… whatever. My special boy is happy doing what he wants to do and that’s all I can ask for.

♤ with Jughead

♤: Taking a bath together

“Are you sure this is the recipe?”

“Look,” he pressed eagerly, showing me the screen of his phone. “This one says add apple cider vinegar, this one says use oatmeal.”

“But none of them say use the two together!”

He shrugged. “I figure they both help with the same problem, why not use ‘em together, right?”

I sighed, looking at the kiddie pool on the ground filled with what looked like gross swamp water. “Do I really have to get in there, Jughead?”

“Well, you wanted to do somethin’ about that sunburn, didn’t you?”

“It smells like the dumpster behind the Pop’s.”

He chuckled to himself. ”Just imagine you’re in some fancy infinity pool or something. You’re in… Aruba? Dubai, maybe?”

“Except we’re in my backyard in Riverdale. And this is a kiddie pool we got from Walmart.”

“Some imagination you got there. Let’s go, Toasty.” He handed me one of the bands he kept around his wrist.

“Ugh, don’t call me that- This shit hurts!” I rolled my eyes and tied my hair up before stepping inside the thick sludge. “So gross… I’m burning this swimsuit after this.”

“I told you to wear sunscreen-”

“-I did! You’re the one that didn’t rub it in good enough-”

“-No no! I’ll have you know I definitely rubbed it in.”

“Oh, shut up.” I sat in what felt like a pool of mud and made myself comfortable. “I feel like I’m bathing in oatmeal cookie batter.”

“Hey, uhh… how do you think that stuff tastes, anyway?”

“Ugh, don’t be disgusting, Juggie-”

“-Really! I’m thinkin’ a chocolate chip cookie dough shake from Pop’s.”

“How about you grab a spoon after I get all my sunburned skin cells all mixed in, hm?”

“Alright, that’s enough. You’re gonna make me lose the burger I just ate.”

“I can’t believe I have to spend my Saturday soaking in this… waste!”

He sighed, staring down at the murky water. “Don’t say I never did anything for you. Move over.”

I looked at him as he began pulling his shirt off. “W-what? Wait- What are you doing?”

“Putting a coin in the karma bank.”

“It’s fine, Jughead. I’m fine, I’m just being a baby about it-”

“-And I was always good with babies. I used to eat Jellybean’s smashed peas to make her seem like they were the best thing in the world and she was missin’ out. I think I can handle this.” After climbing out of his jeans he stared at the pool one more time before looking at the sky. “Help us all.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “So dramatic…”

“Is it cold? Do I need to dip a toe in first?”

“Oh no, the water’s great. Feels amazing,” I spoke sarcastically. Finally he took a deep breath and climbed in, taking a seat next to me, outstretching his arms on the pool. “Wasn’t so hard, was it?”

“I’ve got oatmeal in my boxers, Y/N. There’s oatmeal in places I never imagined having oatmeal! When I imagine us taking baths together, this isn’t exactly what I pictured, y’know!”

“You imagine us taking baths together?” I teased.

He rolled his eyes. “Shut up.”

I laughed and sighed, reclining against the wall of the pool to try to get as comfortable as I could. “So how long does it say I’m supposed to sit in this stew anyway?” It went silent for a second until I realized one thing: he didn’t have his phone on him. My eyes shot open and I turned to look at his pile of clothes, his cell sitting right on top. He was doing the same.

The thought after that realization hit us was mutual: “Shit!”

I sighed before answering; “Come in.” I said as I quickly wiped the stray tears from my cheeks. Jax pushed the door open with a frown as he walked in.

“(Y/N), I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said.” Jax said as I scoffed.

“Sure you are. Do you remember the last time we had a fight like this?” Jax stayed silent as I continued; “It was the night I left.”

“(Y/N), I said I was sorry! What else do you fucking want?!” Jax yelled as I stared up at him furiously.

“I want the old fucking Jax Teller back! The one I used to know and love. The one who would kick the living shit out of anyone who looked at me the wrong way. The one who would hang around with me all day long and the one… I once called my best friend.” I said as Jax sighed.

“He’s gone. He watched you walk out of his fucking life without a fucking goodbye for four fucking years.” Jax snapped as I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms upon my chest.

“I fucking left because of you, do you not remember that? Or was cheap pussy that good that you don’t remember that?” Jax sighed as his phone began to ring; he hauled it out as I rolled my eyes. “Typical Teller. Always avoids his problems.” Jax sighed in annoyance as he picked up his phone.

“Hello?” Jax snapped into the phone as his face changed from annoyance to heartbreak in two seconds. “I’m on my way, I’ll meet you there.” Jax said as he closed his phone before sliding it into his pocket.

“Lemme guess, Tara has a problem and only you can fix it?” I said sarcastically as Jax stared straight ahead as he spoke.

“It was my mom. They had to do an emergency C-section on my ex-junkie wife. Gemma found her passed out with blood between her legs. I have to get to the hospital.” I felt my heart drop as I grabbed the same plaid shirt I had been wearing the night before and I grabbed Jax’s hand before running out of the room and to his bike.

We’ve got to go.” I said as I grabbed my helmet and put it on as Jax did the same before speeding off down the road.

                                                 Time Skip:

Once, we arrived at the hospital I immediately hopped off Jax’s bike before he could and I ran into the hospital. Jax followed closely behind as we boarded the elevator and went straight to the 5th floor. As soon as we reached the 5th floor I walked off the elevator as Jax came beside me. We rounded the corner as I came face to face with the she-devil her self.

“Out of my way, Knowles. Unless, you want to have a problem.” I said as Tara looked taken aback by my sudden outburst.

“Jax, Wendy is right down this way.” Tara said as she turned towards Jax while ignoring me. Jax nodded his head as he began to venture down the way Tara had pointed. I went to follow him as I felt a sudden pressure on my chest.

“It’s only immediate family only, you’ll have to stay here.” I stared at Tara with a harsh glare as I spoke.

“Oh baby girl, if you know what’s good for you, you better remove your grimy hand of yours before I have to remove it for you.” I sneered as Tara smirked.

“Did you just threaten a doctor?” Tara questioned sarcastically as I leaned back and punched her in the nose as Jax flipped around to see Tara clutching her now bleeding nose as I begun to lean down.

“No, but I did threaten and assault an ex-croweater.” I said as security pulled my arms behind my back as Jax ran to Tara’s side.

“(Y/N)! What the hell?!” Jax yelled furiously as I stared at him in shock.

“Don’t even, with me Teller.” I said as security pulled me to the elevators. “You should expect this kind of behaviour from a slut.” I said as Jax stared at me in disbelief as the elevators closed shut.

“Well, well, well, two times in a run of a day. You really are part of Samcro.” Hale said as he looked down at me as I stared up at him with handcuffs on my wrists.

“They don’t call me the princess for nothing.” I said as Hale chuckled before taking a seat next to me.

“True. Well, Tara decided she’s not going to press charges against you.” Hale said as I scoffed.

“No surprise there. Jax probably talked her out of it.” I said as Hale stared at me in curiosity.

“You seem to have some type of conflict with Jax, did something happen?” Hale questioned as I turned back to him.

“She did.” I replied simply as Hale nodded his head for me to continue. “If you want to hear more of the story, then you’ll have to uncuff me first.” I said as Hale chuckled before reaching over and uncuffing me. “Thank you. It all happened the night I left… Well, Tara and me never actually got along but what made me hate her guts was when she made him choose.” I said as Hale stared at me confusingly.

“Choose?”

“Between me and her.” I said as I looked behind to see Jax standing over in the distance.

“Who did he choose?” Hale questioned as if the answer hadn’t of already been obvious.

“He chose her.” I said as I kept my eyes on Jax. Hale nodded as he looked down at the ground before looking back at me.

“I’m sorry to hear that. Listen, are you hungry? Maybe, you’d like to grab a bite to eat and tell me more of your story?” I smiled before nodding my head.

“Yeah, I’d like that.” I said as I adverted my eyes from Jax’s stare as Hale stood up and offered me his hand. “Before I do that, you might want to uncuff me.” I said as Hale came to realization before nodding his head and grabbing the key.

“Yes, of course.” He said as he uncuffed me and I stood.

“Let’s go.” I said as we walked side by side out of the hospital as I Jax’s stare burned into the back of my head.

                                                Time Skip:

“You didn’t really do that, did you?!” I said while trying to conceal my laughter.

“I was 10 years old!” I laughed as Hale smiled across the table from me.

“Will that be everything for you this evening?” The waiter questioned as Hale wiped his hands and nodded his head.

“Yes, thanks. If we could get the check that would be great.” The waiter nodded his head before turning around and walking back over to his station. Hale began to reach into his pocket for his wallet as I held up my hand.

“Not happening officer. You treated me to coffee earlier and now it’s my turn to repay you.” I said as I reached into my jacket and hauled out some money.

“I can’t let you do that.” Hale protested as I shook my head in response.

“Yes you can and you will.” I said as Hale sighed in defeat. The waiter came back with the check and I handed him the money as Hale and I stood.

“Thanks for that.” Hale said as I smiled.

“It was no problem.” I said simply as we headed for the door.

“So, (Y/N) … Do you need a ride or is someone coming for you?” Hale questioned as he pushed opened the door to reveal an angry looking Jax across the way.

“Apparently, someone’s coming for me.” I said as I motioned towards Jax as Hale glanced over before back to me.

“Oh … Okay. Well, could I maybe see you again?” Hale questioned as I nodded my head with a smile.

“I’d like that.” I said as Hale nodded his head with a smile.

“Good. See you later.” Hale said as I began towards the infuriating Jax.

“See you!” I said as I came upon Jax and took the helmet from his hands.

“What was that all about?” Jax sneered as I rolled my eyes and put the helmet on.

“What? Two friends having dinner together? We used to do it all the time before she came along.” I snapped back at him as I climbed onto his bike. Jax got onto his bike and began to start it up.

“That looked way more than just two friends meeting up.” Jax said as I rolled my eyes and wrapped my arms around his waist.

“Why do you even care? You have Tara, anyways.” I snap back as Jax stayed quiet for the ride back to the club. Once we reached the club, I took off my helmet it and handed it to Jax. “Thanks for the ride.” I muttered as I began to walk back to the club.

“(Y/N)!” The sound of Jax’s voice made me stop mid walk as I turned back to face him.

“What?” I said with a little too much anger trailing in my voice.

“I just wanted to say that I was sorry for earlier. I wasn’t trying to call you a slut but I just don’t want to see you get hurt.” I sighed as I made my back over to Jax.

“It’s okay Jax but don’t worry. I’m not going to get hurt. David’s a good guy I swear.” Jax sighed.

“He may be a good guy but he’s also a cop who wants to see Samcro fall and if he can get in good with the club by getting close to you, he will.” I adverted my eyes away from Jax’s as I spoke.

“I’m finally happy with someone. Can you just leave it at that? Every time I meet a guy I always have to put my guard up because you find something wrong with them. I really like Hale, can’t you just be happy for me?” I said as I brought my gaze back to Jax. Jax sighed before giving me a smile.

“If you’re happy, I’m happy.” Jax said as he walked closer and wrapped his arms around my shoulders before pulling me into his chest.

“Thank you so much Jax!” I said as I wrapped my arms around him.

“Listen, we’re going to the carnival tomorrow, want to come?” Jax questioned as we pulled away from our hug.

“Of course, I’d love too!” I said as Jax smiled and wrapped his arm around my shoulder before making our way back to the club.

“Great.”

“List Jax, I’m kind of tired. I think I’m going to head on into the dorm.” Jax nodded his head as he spoke.

“Well, I have church now but then I’ll be into the dorm, sound good.” I nodded my head as we pushed open the doors to the club as I began to head towards the dorms.

“Hey (Y/N)?”

“Yeah?” I said as I turned back to face Jax.

“I’m glad your back. I missed you.” Jax said as I smiled back at him.

“I’m glad I’m back too. I missed you.” I said before turning back and heading to the dorms with a smile on my face.

  • Rantarou: Can I ask you a question?
  • Hoji: Yeah, sure.
  • Rantarou: Why do you put up with Wakiya?
  • Hoji: Oh, you know because we're friends.
  • Rantarou: Why?
  • Hoji: Wow, you ask really hard questions. Look, I know he can be aggravating, but what you have to remember is he's not doing it on purpose, it's just how he is. But he's also loyal and trustworthy and we have fun together.
  • Rantarou: You know you're describing a dog?
  • Hoji: He did bite me once. But in his defense, I came up behind him while he was eating.
  • Rantarou: They hate that.
  • Hoji: Wakiya is the smartest person I have met. He's a little broken and he needs me. And I guess I need him too.
  • Rantarou: Why is that?
  • Hoji: You will not let this go, will you?

I broke up with the love of my life and during that time another friend of mine proposed. I accepted because I thought it'd help me get over the first one whom I'm absolutely in love with. But it doesn't help. The first one is back and I don't want to lose him but I also do not want to be a bitch and break the second one's heart. He's so in love with me. I don't know what to do. I know I've made these horrible mistakes but I want a way out of it. Please, help me and tell me what to do.

Hey, Nonnie <3

I can’t tell you what to do. I’m so sorry, I know this isn’t the answer you were looking for, but the only person who can figure this out is yourself. Whatever you choose to do, though, you’re going to be okay. Think about what is fair to all of you, whether staying in a relationship with a person you don’t love romantically is worth it to the both of you. Ponder everything and the answer is there. It won’t be easy, but you’ll get through this.

Sending all the love and hugs <3

B3? 💕

Rip looked around. “This is not good,” he said. “Maybe we could send some sort of signal…”

Sara took out a machete. Rip jumped back.

Sara raised an eyebrow. “What? You think I’m gonna eat you to survive?”

“I wasn’t thinking that until just now,” Rip said, staring at her.

She rolled her eyes, then went over to a tree and started hacking at it.

“What are you doing?” he asked as he watched her.

“Building a boat,” she said. “If you help me, I’ll let you ride on it.”

Rip smiled at her proactive nature. “How can I help?” he asked.

“Go find something edible and bring it to me for when I get hungry,” she told him.
