Connor Breaks Up with Daria:
Daria came to visit Connor the day after he got surgery on his foot. He was sure his father just let her come so ‘salvage’ his heterosexuality. But he liked Jude. Jude was the only person he really wanted to see and talk to. Now that he had come out, there was no reason for him to date Daria. He had to break up with her.
“Is your foot ok?” Daria asked holding Connor’s hand.
“I can’t really feel it,” Connor said, “They have me on pain meds.”
“I’m so sorry you got shot. I shouldn’t have asked you to come with me and Taylor and sneak out.”
“Taylor said you blamed everything on Jude so your dad won’t let you see him anymore. Is that true?”
Connor slipped his hand out of Daria’s. “Look, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Daria was momentarily offended when he stopped holding her hand. “What is it?”
Connor let out a deep breath. “I can’t date you anymore. We have to break up.” “Why? Because of what happened?”
“No. Because…I like Jude. I’m gay. I did like you, at first, but then I started to have crush on Jude and we kissed and I kept dating you because my dad was cool with me hanging out with Jude because I had a girlfriend. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody.”
Daria stared at Connor for a moment. Her face twisted from shock to total anger. “You jerk! I can’t believe you led me on like that so you could be a little gay boy with your best friend!”
“I wasn’t leading you on. I didn’t know what to do. You don’t know my dad.”
“I know a jerk when I see one. And you are the biggest jerk I’ve ever met, Connor. You and your little boyfriend! You know what, I’m glad you got shot. You deserve it!”
“So you hate me?”
“I more than hate you. You used me.” She punched him in the arm, hard. “I hope they have to do surgery again and you loose your foot this time. Son of a bitch!” She stormed out of the room slamming the door behind her.
Connor rubbed the arm she had punched. For someone so dainty, she had a strong force. Connor felt bad about breaking up with Daria. But he knew it had been the right thing. He didn’t want to have to keep pretending to be something he wasn’t. His dad knew now. What was the point in pretending? He had a strong urge to call or text Jude and tell him. His dad still had his phone. He sighed, sank into his pillow and closed his eyes. For the first time in awhile, he felt a weight be lifted.
