he is a true inspiration

My uncle once won first place in a lying contest, and I feel like this is a rare true story that needs to be told. So here it is.

My family, for as long as I can remember, has had these “adopted uncles” who are my mom and dad’s friends from college/highschool. There’s like five of them, and none of them are related to us. They are awesome, fun guys, and I’m best friends with their daughters (of the ones that have kids). I love hanging out with them, and when I do, I hear lots of hilarious stories that they and my Dad love to recollect whenever they’re together.

My uncles are interesting guys, and there are a lot of interesting stories. One of them is part of a well known band, one of them hung out with Taylor Swift on several occasions, and one worked on the Power Rangers. It’s all very interesting. But I think one of the funniest stories they’ve told me, far from meeting celebrities, or getting lost in the woods, or luring bears into their campsite (yep, they did that) is how one of them (let’s call him S) won a lying contest. This is how it went:

S and my dad, and some of his friends decided to go up into the mountains for a day. They drove up the winding roads, pine trees flashing past their windows, singing to Tom Petty the whole way. My dad and S have a great sense of humor, and I’m sure they were both in a laughable mood.

When they got to their destination, they saw a large banner over the road that read “Annual Lying Contest.” I kid you not. This little town in the piney mountains was so devoid of excitement that they legiterally hosted a Lying Contest every year.

My dad and S thought this was the FUNNIEST thing they had ever seen. They HAD to go watch the contest take place. They pulled into the parking lot, found their way to the stage, and asked someone about what was happening.

Apparently, the lying contest is an annual contest put on by the city, to see who had the most believable lie. Contestants would spend months coming up with elaborate lies, that were sure to convince people in the crowd. At the end, the judges would rank the lies on most convincing to least convincing. The winner of the contest recieved a home baked pie, and some other prize. Some of these lies could take fifteen minutes or more (remember this).

So anyways, S and my dad found a seat, and were ready to hear some lies. Later, my dad told me that it was hilarious to watch. There were lies about Bigfoot sightings, about bear wrestlings, army experiences, ghost hauntings, and more. My dad and S were cracking up the whole time, while marveling at how unique the demographic of the town was to enjoy something like this.

Finally, the last contestant stepped down from the stage after a 20 minute elaborate lie about an alien abduction. The judges took a sweeping look over the crowd, and spoke loudly into the microphone; “are there any other contestants?”

Before my dad could stop him, S stood up and raised his hand.

“Well, come up sir!”

S climbed the steps to the stage. He looked over the crowd seriously, and desperately tried to come up with a lie in time. His mind was blank. Empty. But S had no shame, and I’ve known him long enough to know this was 100% something he would do. The man throws himself into every awkward situation ever.

He took a step towards the microphone. His hands were clasped in front of him. He looked around at the people watching, the trees surrounding them, and said in his most serious voice into the mic;

“I was born a fish.”

That was it. The audience lost it. There was no build up, no elaborate detail, no story behind the lie. Just 1 ½ seconds, and he had told his entire lie. It was hilariously short, and there was no plot holes, or inconsistencies. Just purely, seriously, “I was born a fish.”

S left the stage in the midst of roaring laughter, as the audience, judges, and my dad tried to contain themselves. It was one of his proudest moments, that one second lie.

And guess what? He won first place.

First. Place.

A true inspiration, imo.

YOI Future!Verse ABO AU - Clothing Set

#01 - Yasha Katsuki-Nikiforov

I think sometimes you can learn a lot about a person from their clothing choices, and I’ve always sorta wanted to make some fashion sets ^ ^ So I’m making one for the OC kids, starting with the eldest as usual, Yasha! (He’s probably pre-teen-ish around here, maybe, idk)

Yasha still more or less thinks of himself as a boy (when he can be bothered to think about it at all) but loves flowers, pastels, and anything soft and gentle (in harsh contrast to his blunt as a bludgeon personality). And most importantly, he kinda just really hates wearing pants and underwear, when he can get away with full nudity… He takes the young!Victor flower fairy aesthetic to the next level. He can be very picky about what he wears, and usually prefers expensive but relatively unknown specialty brands. His parents, especially Victor, are more than happy to indulge his tastes.

~~

IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS AU: It’s a Yuri!!! on Ice AU, Yuuri-centric with end-game polyamory in an ABO setting, Yuuri gets married to four mates (Victor, Yurio, Phichit, Minami) and they have OC kids.

This post features the Victor x Yuuri kid, Yasha.

“Am I?” Reg asks, eyes fixed on Vimes’ back as he speaks to some new recruits.

“Yes Reg,” Nobby says. “You’re staring, Reg. Why’re you staring?”

“He… just reminds me of someone, sometimes. The Commander.”

He’s twenty-five and he should be dead, is dying, blood gushing from more wounds than he can count but he’s still crawling forwards, still fighting, propelled by nothing but willpower and conviction because he will. Not. Give. Up.

He’s twenty-five – but is he, still? – and fresh air washes over his face, not quite ridding him of the taste of mud and dirt still filling his mouth.

here’s the thing about andrew garfield. here’s why he’s my favorite. everything he does and everything he is comes down to love. His work as an actor, his life as a human being, everything is just one long sequence of finding new things to open his heart to. He goes from movie to movie just falling in love over and over, with his characters, with his costars, with his directors, with the sound guy, with the paparazzi with whom he just had a thoughtful conversation, with adam driver, with the kids from stranger things, with everyone he meets and everyone he doesn’t. he’s just an endless source of regenerating beautiful love and i’m so emotional.

Timmy Turner’s answer “uh…internet?” when he’s asked by his parents where he got stuff was… life changing, inspirational and… rings true to this day.

If “Drag Me Down” does not scream Matsuoka siblings to you then you are wrong. God, this song. You all should listen to it okay, maybe cry a lil, too. Whichever floats your boat, man.

Who Is Prometheus?

It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, but I thought I’d dive back into the world of spec. Bear with me. We might be rusty, but this is a natural byproduct of talking Arrow with @callistawolf for over an hour. The brain swims with possibilities.

I’ve made no secret about my frustration over the Prometheus storyline.

Primarily because A) we didn’t get a reveal in the midseason finale and B) the back story on Prometheus was, in my opinion, spectacularly lame.

My reasons are thus: The Big Bad is always a crucial element in Arrow’s season arc. He/She is the dark half of Oliver’s hero’s journey for that season. It is monumentally important that the audience connect to the Big Bad. It is monumentally important that we are allowed to get to know him or her, so we can understand his or her motivations. This ultimately leads to a greater understanding of where Oliver needs to go in his overall evolution.

Not revealing who Prometheus is essentially keeps a wall between him and the audience. His more of an archetype. A voice box, with a skill level to match Oliver, who’s more of an omnipresent figure than an actual “face to face” opponent. He’s the Arrow equivalent of the Boogey Man. We saw some of this with Ra’s Al Ghul in Season 3 and Slade in Season 2, but Arrow revealed their characters in both mid seasons finale to allow the audience to connect to the them and move beyond the omnipresent archetype.  They have not done that with Prometheus us and failing to reveal his identity simply prolongs this disconnect.

Arrow then tries to temper this disconnect by providing us with some information about Prometheus. He is the son of  Claybourne, a man who was on Robert Queen’s list. A villain Oliver killed in Season 1. I had both my mother and husband, both ardent casual viewers, ask me if Claybourne was someone we knew about in Season 1. Nope. Never heard of him. They just plucked a name from obscurity. The connection to Season 1 is… thin. Even, Diggle’s “you’re killing can lead to unforeseen consequences” statement was so heavy handed it was cringe worthy. This all just feels plopped in.

And that’s my beef. We’ve been told over and over and over again how Prometheus is a villain they had to wait FIVE YEARS to do. This places some mythological like level to S5′s Big Bad, like he’s been lying in wait and Arrow has just been waiting for the right time to pull the trigger.  So this all boils down to Prometheus needed five years to train? Eh.

Then, of course, there’s how Team Arrow discovered Prometheus was Claybourne’s son. They only discovered this information because Prometheus wanted them to.

It was like a play. He set up the scene and Oliver was merely an actor in the show Prometheus was directing. None of it felt real and yet… Oliver and team believed it hook line and sinker. Prometheus reenacts a kill from Season 1. He provides a baby photo and Claybourne’s ashes and TA DA! We have the identity of our bad guy. There wasn’t a lot of critical thinking from Team Arrow. This was all handed to them at a very specific time and in a very specific way.  And everyone’s just all, “Cool. Makes sense.”

WHAT??? Where’s my beloved Scooby Gang? Where’s the examination? WHERE’S THE DISTRUST OLIVER? At the very least I’d expect that from you, but homeboy is “Prometheus is, above all things, an honest foe.”

MADNESS I TELLL YOU. MADNESS. Hence the screaming and throwing things at my television.  Then there’s the overly dramatic, almost Greek like tragedy way, Prometheus orchestrated Billy’s death.

True to his name! Dude is a Drama Queen. He’s not particularly concerned with killing Oliver at the moment, but he’s going to make his life a soap opera. Why? THE FUN.

So, I’m calm now. We’ve watched the aftermath of Billy’s death. We’re seeing the path Felicity is going down.

There’s been some incredibly telling things revealed about that journey. So, instead of accepting Prometheus at face value (as Arrow so desperately wants us to do), I decided to actually acknowledge the man for who he is… a Puppet Master.  This is all one, big, massive misdirect. It is elegant. It is cunning. It is twisted. And it will touch everyone in Oliver’s life.

The reason why Arrow didn’t reveal Prometheus’ identity is because this is the season long mystery.  The identity reveal is their big card. It’s the “Who’s in the grave?” reveal. It’s the “What is the Undertaking?” reveal. They aren’t letting us connect to the Big Bad because WE ALREADY KNOW HIM. And when he is revealed it will be a light bulb moment. A moment worth five years waiting for.

A lot of this has been theorized by many other people for many other months. I’ve seen so many specs I can’t remember them all, but this was the most recent. Added a layer to the Prometheus myth I missed and I loved it. However, I think Calli and I have pieced together a couple of the holes that were hanging us up on a few items. So, let’s dig in…

my first soulmate was for the young me, the innocent me, the i need somebody to call me beautiful or else i won’t believe it me, the i’m too young to understand the complexities of relationships me, the please just kiss me and call me pretty me. he was for the me that thought i was broken because a boy didn’t have a crush on me back, the me that didn’t know what being broken felt like, the me that didn’t know what being broken even meant. he was the soulmate for the me that had never been kissed, never been in love, never been whispered pretty promises to, never been lied to, never been cheated on, never been heartbroken. and when i had experienced these things, he was no longer my soulmate. he was first love.

my second soulmate was for the transforming me, the temporary me, the i’m working on getting over the first soulmate me, the i’m still not over it me, the i still don’t understand how relationships work but i’m getting there me. he was for the me that needed a friend, the me that let myself fall in love with anybody who wanted me to, the me that didn’t get the work it took to make things, well, work. he was the soulmate for the me that had too high of expectations, too little dedication, too many cracks that i put in myself. and when i had learned what i need to learn, he was no longer my soulmate. he was fragile love.

my third soulmate was for the strong me, the i love myself me, the i am finally good to myself me, the i don’t really care if you want me at all because i’m fine without you me, the but it would be nice if you did want me back me. he was for the me that wasn’t sure where to go but just knew not to go backwards, the me that had figured out that boys aren’t worth hurting yourself over, the me that knew that and still hurt herself over boys. he was the soulmate for the me that still searched for somebody else, the me that was never quite satisfied with what i had, the me that should have been satisfied, the me that should have stopped looking. and when i didn’t stop looking, he was no longer my soulmate. he was selfish love.

my fourth soulmate was for the broken me, the careless me, the i really think you’re my soulmate me, the i know you’re hurting me but i don’t care me, the he has to be the one me. he was for the me that gave up everything for one little taste, the me that allowed toxicity due to circumstance, the me that believed the promises made and the words said, the me that stayed up waiting for you to come back long after i knew you wouldn’t. he was the soulmate for the me that needed to go back to being strong, the me that needed to open her eyes, the me that needed to realize when something had ended. and when i realized it, he was no longer my soulmate. he was toxic love.

inspired by this quote:

“Maybe we all have a lot of soul mates, each for a different time in our lives. Maybe every person we ever love is a soulmate in some sense, and that’s why they mean so much to us, that’ s why they’ re so hard to forget. People change and fall out of love, but that doesn’t mean that at one time, they weren’t perfect for each other.” -anonymous

Women aren’t the only ones who can challenge gender stereotypes.

This young man is an inspiration! It’s so hard to be different and to break the mold at his age but he has the confidence to inspire others to be true to themselves.

There is no way we could ever forget how much Namjoon loves us. He calls us his “true friends”, his inspirations, his reasons to keep going. He makes sure to write messages in all the languages he knows to reach out to as many of us possible. He checks in with us once in a while to see how we’re doing and keeps us updated on his own personal journey. He writes and produces songs thinking of us and dedicating them to us. He is as considerate and thoughtful as they come and we have every reason to love and cherish him. He deserves at least that much.
