The actual quote from Rian Johnson:
Johnson says that The Last Jedi offers “no one-to-one equivalent of the Han-to-Leia, burning, unrequited love. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece.“
He never says there will be no romance in this new trilogy. He never debunked Reylo. It’s Vanity Fair that does the name drop of two very notable and popular ships in an attempt to portray the typical crazed fan girl who enjoys a relationship that many believe will never be canon.
Most journalism sites are skeptical of Reylo so the tone used when writing about it is clear and fits many of the preconceived notions of the relationship, while also kinda being tongue and cheek and poking fun at stormpilot. (Bleh)
But If you consider comments made in the past about a romance they all sound vaguely like Rian’s.
John Boyega: ”[a romance] it’s not going where you think.“
Daisy Ridley: ”(when asked if there is romance for her character) We’ll see"
If anything, this is a victory for us–a victory for everyone actually. This means we’ll have a well written and developed relationship. We won’t have an over the top Han/Leia slap slap kiss kiss relationship, which is great for those characters, but maybe not so much Rey, Kylo, and Finn.
I think we’ll get what most reylo shippers have always wanted: a strong dynamic between two characters that borderlines on something more and hopefully develops into a platonic or compassionate relationship.
