Alec had just come home from the Institute and he had a lot on his mind. He walked through the front door of the loft and shut it lazily. “I’m home!” he called out to Magnus, stopping to kick his off his shoes.
“Oh, finally!” he heard Magnus say and smiled. “Do you want a drink?” he called out from the living room.
Alec chuckled. “Sure,” he answered. Just as Alec was rounding the corner, something caught his eyes from the corner of the room. He stopped and turned to look at it.
It was the keris that Magnus had on display. Alec remembered Magnus telling him about his mother had used it to kill herself and he felt an unusual feeling in the pit of his stomach. He blinked and quickly turned away, walking up to Magnus and kissing him briefly before taking a hold of the glass he was holding out for him.
“How was your day?” asked Alec as he settled into the couch. Magnus groaned and flopped down beside him.
“I had the most insufferable client today. Absolutely infuriating.” Alec chuckled and rubbed Magnus’ shoulder reassuringly and the man seemed to calm down. “But you’re not a bad face to see after a long day,” said Magnus and Alec blushed, rolling his eyes and looking away.
Magnus smiled and leaned in to kiss him. He pulled away and looked unto Alec’s hazel eyes. “God, I love your eyes,” he whispered and chuckled as Alec’s face only turned redder. Magnus scowled slightly. “I just got mine from my father,” he said dryly before taking a sip and Alec froze for a second. His mind wandered back to Magnus’ cat eyes and then to his mother’s keris.
“Tell me about your father,” said Alec, immediately regretting it after noticing the way Magnus’ lips parted. “I’m sorry,” he said, shaking his head. “I- I… I don’t know why I said that.” Alec bit the inside of his cheek so as to hold himself back from saying anything else stupid.
“It’s okay,” said Magnus, turning to face Alec properly. Part of him hoped it was enough to get Alec to drop the subject. But part of him also knew that it was about time he told Alec who his father was. Alec looked slightly guilty for asking but Magnus’ hand on his eased him.
“He’s not just any demon, is he?” asked Alec and Magnus had to look away. “I just… I remember you telling Izzy all the details about those Edomei. And I didn’t think much of it until the other day at Times Square with the demons.”
Alec cast his mind back to a few days ago when they had encountered a small nest of demons while strolling through the city. Alec had been ready with his bow and quiver. Just as the demons were getting ready to pounce towards Alec, Magnus had snapped his fingers, gaining the attention of every single demon in the area. Alec had looked back at Magnus in confusion, unable to comprehend why they had so easily obeyed him. He hadn’t questioned it at the time but it had been gnawing at the back of his mind ever since.
Alec swallowed and looked back at Magnus, who didn’t seem as uncomfortable as Alec was expecting.
“I’m just scared that when you find out who he is, you’ll…”
“What?” interjected Alec. “I’ll run away? That you’ll lose me like you thought you would before?” Magnus sighed and looked up at Alec. “Look, you don’t have to tell me anything. Just know that I’m here if you do,” reassured Alec and Magnus clenched his jaw. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath.
“There’s a reason Azazel knew who I was,” said Magnus with a sigh.
He looked down at his hands in his lap. Alec stayed silent, putting his glass down and turning to Magnus.
“My father is a Greater Demon, one of the worst, Asmodeus,” said Magnus, looking up at Alec but then looking away to avoid his gaze. “He’s on of the Princes of Hell. Everything I know about him is purely speculation. I’ve tried to keep my distance through the years.”
Alec’s brows furrowed in slight confusion. Magnus had hardly met him. Asmodeus was Magnus’ father after all.
“I know what you’re thinking,” said Magnus and Alec’s breath hitched in his throat. “My father is not a good man, Alexander.” Magnus scoffed, Asmodeus was hardly even a man. “He never was and I doubt he ever will be. And I don’t talk about him a lot – at all, in fact – because everyday I look in the mirror and I see those eyes.”
Magnus’ face twisted into a scowl. He clenched his jaw and swallowed the lump in his throat.
“And I’m reminded of who I am, of who he is, what’s done. And although my mere existence is a consequence of what he did to my mother, I can never forgive him.”
Alec’s lips parted and he was left speechless. Magnus’ eyes were the most breathtaking thing he’d ever seen in his life. And to know the pain that it caused Magnus everyday hurt him.
“Hey,” whispered Alec, a hand going up to stroke a stand of hair out of Magnus’ eyes. Magnus sniffed and looked up at Alec. “You are more than a consequence. You are more than who your father is.”
Alec found himself saying almost what he’d been wanting to hear his whole life. That he wasn’t a clone of his parents, that he had more agency of who he got to be. Magnus smiled and leaned ever so slightly into Alec’s warm touch.
“You are the High Warlock of Brooklyn,” Alec said with a laugh. He leaned in to press his forehead to Magnus’. “And you’re my boyfriend. And I will love you no matter what.”
