Lyra & Will

“She could see from his eyes that he knew at once what she meant, and that he was too joyful to speak. Her fingers were still at his lips, and he felt them tremble, and he put his own hand up to hold hers there, and then neither of them could look; they were confused; they were brimming with happiness.”

a few headcanons about settling:

  • there are, and always have been, people whose daemons never settle. in older cultures they were often either revered as being closer to the gods or feared, being seen as tricksters/shapeshifters/demons as such there’s a certain stigma attached to being unsettled so many modern unsettled people tend to pretend to be settled to avoid harassment
  • but since 2000(ish) there have been more and more unsettled people “coming out,” as it were and its becoming more accepted
  • although it was rare in earlier times daemons would settle as animals that hadn’t been discovered by that society at the time which gave rise to a lot of mythical creature legends
  • speaking of mythological creatures its very,, very rare for a persons daemon to settle as one
  • the accepted age of settling has been getting later and later as we develop more of an idea about how our brains/personalities develop. remember, childhood as we know it is pretty recent and the idea of the teenager is even more recent! i’d say settling in our society would take place between 13 - 19
  • daemons can change form after traumatic or even just big changes in a persons life
  • there are still stigmas attached to a lot of daemon forms, serpents and spiders in particular and in some parts of the world with more extreme belief systems your daemon settling as the wrong thing can be a death sentence
  • along with the protective cases you can get for insect daemons you can also get specialised things to carry around aquatic daemons
  • if your daemon is too large you can elect to undergo separation (like witches) although most peoples daemons dont exceed a certain size

hdm fan month - week 2: favourite quote — “I’ll be looking for you, Will, every moment, every single moment. And when we do find each other again, we’ll cling together so tight that nothing and no one’ll ever tear us apart. Every atom of me and every atom of you… We’ll live in birds and flowers and dragonflies and pine trees and in clouds and in those little specks of light you see floating in sunbeams… And when they use our atoms to make new lives, they won’t just be able to take one, they’ll have to take two, one of you and one of me, we’ll be joined so tight…”
