“I am a camel herder boy and love being one. I herd 5 days a week with 24 of our camels, roughly 9 hours a day. I make sure they graze the pasture, I talk to them and take in the surroundings, especially in the rainy season when the pasture land comes alive. I eat 2 times a day, once in the morning and once when I get back but in between, I survive on camel milk whenever I get thirsty or hungry. Too be honest, the only time I dislike the rural is when the expected rain doesn’t come, then it’s like hell on earth. When I’m not herding camels, I learn the Qur’an.”

“Waxaan ahay wiil geeljire ah, nolosha miyiga waa nolol wanaagsan runtii. Inta badan, 9 saacadood baan guriga ka maqanahay, sabti ilaa arbaco. Waxaan wadaa 24 geel oo meel ka fog guriga geeya si ay usoo daqaan. Mar mar waan la sheekeysta iyo marku roobka Gu’ga da’o, hareeraha iska daawada. Labo wakhti ayaan wax cunaa. Waa aroortii iyo galabtii markaanu noqono. Hadii aan gaajoodo, hasha ayaan caano kasoo lista. Wakhtiga keli aan naco miyiga waa markii roobkii la sugaayey uusan imaan. Meesha waxay isu bedeley dhulka cadaabta. Wakhtiyada kale aan fasax haysto, Qur’aanka barta.”

“My parents and I have been living in Garowe for the past 12 years. We fled from Baidoa because of the clan wars. My father is very old and doesn’t have the strength to work so my mother and I work in the city to bring food to the table. I have 10 siblings, sadly 3 died in the civil strife and the rest are scattered all over Somalia in search of a livelihood save 1 older brother who lives with us. I work hard to earn a living and avoid begging. I clean and shine shoes. There is a general fear amongst us young shoe shiners of being kidnapped. In the beginning, there were several occasions where many of my friends were kidnapped by terrorist groups and human trafficking groups; the younger you are the better but now we all know the people in the city and can easily detect any weird strangers.”
“What is your main aspiration?”
“At the moment, to live another day. Not everyone has the same opportunities in life.”

“Aniga iyo waalidkey waxaan ku noolnahay magaaladda Garowe. Waxaan kasoo qaxnay magaaladda Baydhabo dagaaladii Soomaaliya ka dhacay 12-sano ka hor. Aabbahay waa hawlgab oo oo ma awoodo inuu shaqeeyo, hooyo iyo aniga ayaa shaqeyna midkastaba magaaladda ayuu nolol maalmeed kaa raadiya. Walaalahayga waa 10, 3 kamid ah waxay ku dhinteen dagaaladii inta kalena midba meel ayuu u cararay. Hadda aniga iyo hooyo iyo walaal kale ayaa wada degan, qofkastana wuxuu ku noolaanayo isagaa soo raadsada. Si fiican baan u shaqeeyaa oo waan ka fogaada inaan dadka baryo. Wakhtiyada qaar waxa jirta markaan magaaladda u shaqo tago in asxaabtayda qaarkood aan wada shaqeysano la xado waayo dhalinyarada aadka uu yar yar sidayda waxaa raadsada argagixisada iyo kuwa ka ganacsada caruurta iyo dadka kale oo khasab ku kaxeeysta. Hadda cabsi ma jirto waayo waanu kala baranay dadka.”
“Waa maxay hamigaaga ugu wayn?”
“Wakhtigan xaadirka ah waa sidee u noolaan kara maalin kale. Dadku ma wada haysto fursado isku mid ah lagu nolaado.”
