Taylor Swift’s Style Music Video Analysis

I did not initially dig deep into the symbolism of the Style music video, and once again I underestimated Taylor.
But looking again at the picture that Tay posted for Karlie’s birthday in 2015 (of Calvin in front and Karlie on the back in the kitchen), combined with its lustful caption …. and re-watching one of my favorite movies - Mulholland Drive …. I was reminded that Tay never leaves anything to chance and she always hides deeper meanings. So I have returned to look deeper at “Style”.

“Style” is generally darker than Taylor’s previous music videos.

The video focuses on two people, Tay herself and the young man, who seem sad or gloomy, depending on the mood of the viewer.

The vision of the video is not pure aesthetics. There are some deep subconscious significances. Seen from this angle, “Style” is not about another person, but rather the relationship between the two sides of the same personality (how others perceive one and how you perceive yourself).
From the outset, the video shows us the contradiction between her inner self and how she represents to the world.

The most interesting thing for me at least is that SHE identifies her inner self in this video as a man.

We see how Tay and the man are doing exactly the same movement moving the hair from their face like we see the continuity of the movement of only one person from different angles.

The video continues with footage out in the forest surrounded by fog, inside a cave in a dark room … then appears the airplane necklace (the smoke screen Harry for the last time throwing sand in the eyes of the sheep fans).

Just before the chorus, a symbol appears of a broken mirror in many variations …

Freud would say much the question of a split or hidden personality. I especially like this still frame.

At this moment is the most significant frame of the video

My interpretation is that bearding literally clouds (even suffocates) her from the inside.

The next part is the mixing both faces by projecting his face above hers, she puts her hands and we see his face like a mask in front of her face. -  A metaphorical representation of bearding.

At the beginning of the second verse, the guy drives (Kar has shared how good of a driver Tay is) and looking in the rear view mirror we see Taylor. Again mirror shows the contradiction of the intimate inner self and the image shown to the world.

At this point we see for a moment how both selfs embrace each other but this is for a short moment and a second later we see again Tay with her back to the wall with retransmission of lightning and clouds again superimposed on them.

Close to the end we see again how Tay and the man are doing the same movement, both but mostly Tay in the stretched position, like crucifixion while Tay literally screaming the lyric

Take me HOME

Then at the end inner self’s finally finds the other self in the woods.

Two Ghosts

Harry Styles

Same lips red, same eyes blue
Same white shirt, couple more tattoos
But it’s not you and it’s not me
Tastes so sweet, looks so real
Sounds like something that I used to feel
But I can’t touch what I see

We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

The fridge light washes this room white
Moon dances over your good side
This was all we used to need
Tongue-tied like we’ve never known
Telling those stories we already told
‘Cause we don’t say what we really mean

We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We’re not who we used to be
We don’t see what we used to see
We’re just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty

Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
I’m just trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

“It was two ghosts—is the song that I wrote a few years ago—and I think some things are, just more like personal notes, and they don’t feel like— I don’t know. Sometimes if it’s, uh, if it’s a personal song, you don’t want anyone else to sing it. So, yeah, I don’t really know. I kind of subconsciously held onto it I guess.”

—  Harry on Ash London talking about why he held onto ‘Two Ghosts’ for so long

Since people seem to be having trouble with it, I thought I’d make a handy little guide for “The Haylor Reading” of …Ready For It? including sarcasm, anger, and unhealthiness.

So first of all… In its most basic terms, the verse are sarcastic quips at why it doesn’t work, the prechorus is sarcastic justification for not trying again, the chorus is reassurance that despite all of that, there is still a lot of love felt (the idea that just because it doesn’t work doesn’t mean there’s no more love), and the bridge (baby let the games begin..) is sarcastic and frustration about the fact that there’s a game at all (i.e. the media/something standing in the way of the love).

The first verse  goes through his media perceptions. He’s a womanizer/lady killer, he’s effortlessly cool, he’s mature and throws in the Two Ghosts reference. The first verse is about Harry.. And then it ends with keeping him forever “like a vendetta” which is a reference to how dating him was painted a doing something to people who weren’t involved.

The first prechorus picks up with the bitterness the vendetta line ends with and it’s like “Um we did this before, I know how this is going to go and it’s not pretty.. but I mean… ~no one has to know~ right??” It’s said with a sucker punch of attitude.

The first chorus is like “you want a place no one has to know? My dreams. No one knows how much we love each other there… but it’s all we do. And it’s beautiful.”

And that ends and the bass kicks up and the second verse is her turn. It’s her relationship with the media/public. It opens speaking about how she’s seen as stealing hearts unapologetically.. And then it goes into my favorite part with this fantasy of him just joining her in this narrative of being swept away and they’ll go run off… And that ends with “he can be my jailer” said almost like she’s begging for it and snaps into “Burton to this Taylor” she’s so pissed because she knows that if she ever ran off, if he ever gave into it completely, that would be the only narrative… and it would consume her and it’s not healthy and they’d throw themselves away for it. It’s a heartbreaking moment of honesty which breaks the fantasy.. and then snarks about how good it’d be if only (every love I’ve known in comparison is a failure) and snarks about losing the narrative (I’m so very tame now)

The second prechorus is a deep admittance, once again, that she hasn’t lost the narrative and so it can’t work.

Second chorus says “oh but I want it to”

Bridge is mocking the rest of the song for trying… And maybe even her hope for love in the future

Big chorus movement at the end responds to the bridge’s mockery with letting herself give in to the passion, if only in her dreams and then it’s mixed with a bridge reprise which ends up like a dare to both the media/public, future boyfriends, and her relationship with Harry.

I’ll note now that I think this song is a concept song… It’s not so much about events, as much as it is about frustration. I think haylor was the main inspiration for the song because it’s the most Epic love she’s ever had and the one where the media and public went most wild and these things were most pronounced… But I think it’s about her relationship with her fame more than anything.

Veja a entrevista aqui

Roupa completa:

A música lembra:

As tatuagens - Bússola e Barco:

“Me escute, primeiro de tudo VÁ SE FODER! Segundo, você não pergunta algo tão pessoal e íntimo. (…) Me deixe te dizer que o Harry NÃO DEU RISADA.

E dia 6 de Maio, Louis postou outra selfie e Harry liberou o clipe de Sign Of The Times.

“Two Ghosts: Eu chorei ok, ela é linda. Eu não sou Larrie mas é literalmente sobre o Louis! (…) As letras combinam perfeitamente com ele, eu estava tremendo e chorando. A música menciona olhos azuis e tatuagens.”

No vídeo, a letra apareceu.

“(…) Qual música do álbum do Harry é sobre a Taylor Swift. No teaser do seu documentário, há uma cena de seu caderno com letras nele, mas você realmente precisa dar zoom…

Nick: E lá diz ‘eu odeio Taylor Swift’”

Why Style is Haylor AF (ASDFGHJKL)

Next to “Out of the Woods”, this is one of the most obvious Haylor songs with the most obvious references you can ever dream of. I will (try) to show all of them.

Midnight, you come and pick me up, no headlights
Long drive, could end in burning flames or paradise

Harry comes to pick Taylor up secretively in the middle of the night. The “midnight” and “no headlights” emphasis how they wanted to hide their relationship especially with the media constantly on their tails. It also represents how their love exists in the dark without the paparazzi’s flashing lights. The second line is similar to “Blank Space” with the line of “So it’s gonna be forever/ or it’s gonna go down in flames”. “Long drive” allures to the journey of their relationship to which the followup is parallel towards how this relationship could take a turn for worse or for better.

On the humorous side of things, I wonder if “burning flames” equals car crash thus car on fire. I mean, they are driving at midnight without headlights. #recklessdriving

Fade into view, oh
It’s been a while since I have even heard from you
Heard from you

Haylor has supposedly broken up, which highlights that Harry has seemingly faded out of her view, but still in a distant vision. They haven’t spoken to each other in a while, and now he is reaching back out, reappearing into her life again.

I should just tell you to leave
Cause I know exactly where it leads
But I watch us go round and round each time

Haylor is a cycle of mad love. They’d have random fights yet still reunite back together. Taylor knows what is expected of this on-off relationship, and that is for it to come to its indisputable end. However, she just can’t bring herself to tell Harry to go away, so it ends up being this tape on replay for the whole time. Maybe a part of her would be curious as to what each split/make-up would bring, for an example, would they last this time around? Like Taylor said, “love’s a ruthless game unless you play it good and right”.

You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip, classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style

This is a throwback to around the 50′s and 60′s. Harry is pretty much an echo of the James Dean package such as that he sports the smug smirk on his face. Meanwhile, Taylor is like the popular woman’s trend back in the day wearing her signature red lip look. The two of them are basically following the old-school styles.

Other than the not-so-subtle Style reference of Harry by dropping the “s” at the end, the last two lines correspond to the whole of “we fight”, “we breakup”, “we get back together”, also linking to “Out of the Woods” with the line of “we were built to fall apart/then fall back together”. It’s an overall rocky relationship that isn’t full of stability, but they find something in each other that just draws them together, it may be a powerful connection or undeniable chemistry and attraction. With the last line, Taylor suggests that while certain trends do disappear over time, their relationship is similar to those trends that are still timeless and absolutely unmissable.

Before I was joking about the “car crash”, but now if you think about it, James Dean passed away at the peak of his career in an accident. Taylor could mean that Haylor was bound to break down and burst into flames as a means of their crazy exhilarating ride of an relationship.

You got that long hair slicked back, white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt

Taylor keeps on contrasting the good girl and the bad boy imagery throughout the chorus. James Dean has been perceived widely by audiences to be the classic bad boy with his level of charm and irresistible quality. Please do note that although James Dean is seen to be a bad boy, he has his class and elegance in which his demeanor is seemed to be more captivating an intriguing. In this context, Harry was Taylor’s James Dean where she just can’t help herself to be tempted by his nature. Every good girl wants to tame the bad boy for him to be good for her. Entering this relationship, even though the forecast of breaking up remained clear to her, it was still a mystery for her to explore. Like most of the romance fiction books I pore over, typical well-behaved good girls cannot resist or push the luring bad boy away.

I do want to just raise the idea of “tight little skirt”. 1989 is a more mature and grownup album compared to her older ones by introducing the naughty side of Taylor Swift. Although in the Speak Now album consisting of the song “Sparks Fly”, there was some hints of sexual activity, but I’ll leave that for another day. Anyway. this prompts thoughts of whether she was dressed to impress and reinforces the sexual attraction between them.

So it goes, he can’t keep his wild eyes on the road

What a rebel of a man you are Harry. There are many responses to this. Now, the media likes to portray Harry as the womanizer and complete flirt with a wandering eye. Personally we would see him for much more than that (I have high respect for him on his feminist views), just like how we see Taylor for more than the image of a psychotic girl who loves to date and torment boyfriends or pen another breakup song every chance she receives. I don’t know if Harry can’t focus properly on the road because he’s too busy admiring Taylor. But metaphorically speaking, it’s still a risky act without precautions (because your damn car can crash) which is their relationship of a doomed conclusion. In another sense, Harry could live up to his playboy view of checking out girls and flirting up a storm by not concentrating solely on one thing.

Takes me home, lights are off he’s taking off his coat

The lights being off provides this ominous undertone of something happening soon. This song is getting pretty darn sexual. But “taking off his coat” could mean two things, the most blatant one to put it bluntly, engage in some sexual encounter - or PG level of take off your coat when you arrive at someone’s house ready for a heart-to-heart conversation.

If we dive really deep into the other meanings of just this one simple line, “taking off his coat” is shedding off layers and baring his body. Harry could be finally free to uncover his feelings to Taylor after stripping down the extra skin. In other words, there’s nothing to cover him up anymore to prevent him from revealing himself. Now, if the lights are off, eventually they are going to have to be turned on again. The current situation could ideally represent that Taylor’s in the dark about what Harry’s going to do next. If the lights are switched back on, this is Harry’s small flicker of light of a confession. It symbolises a change of heart perhaps of how they aren’t together and that he wants her back.

No idea if the light ever went back on with Harry in the scene because Taylor interrupts with the next line:

I say “I’ve heard - oh, that you’ve been out and about with some other girl, some other girl”
He says “What you heard is true but I
Can’t stop thinking about you and I”
I said “I’ve been there too a few times”

Here we go, back to the events of Harry kissing a model named Emma Ostilly down under. Helpful reminder of the fact that Haylor met each other at the Kids Choice Awards and probably texted each other back and forth flirtatiously after that. That was the early Haylor relationship stance. But that went to a halt when these rumours of him cheating circulated. In my Haylor research, it’s claimed that Harry did send Taylor a message to warn her about the pictures but Taylor broke it off not wanting to get hurt again. Does this reference the scandal? I think it does.

By the way, the second last line of “You and I” makes me think about One Direction’s song of the exact name. In it there was a line I remember of “not even the Gods above/ can separate the two of us”. I like the sound of the exclusivity Harry is proposing. In “Style”, Harry may as well stress the strength of their relationship and how they’re meant for each other.

The last line is open for interpretation. There’s the possibility of throwing the idea of Taylor hanging out with another guy but “can’t stop thinking about you and I” as well. So she did the same thing Harry did, spend time with someone else. She did enter a summer fling with Conor Kennedy after the fiasco of Harry. Maybe it was a cheating on herself kind of circumstance where she kept denying her feelings for Harry. Or perhaps the line is directed of Taylor seeing that as in the many relationships she has entered, maybe she has heard the then boyfriend say this line to many times.

Take me home
Just take me home
Just take me home

I’m conflicted as to what the bridge is truly trying to pass. It’s rather ambiguous because we don’t know for sure. I think Taylor probably did this on purpose to lead our imaginations stray for future possibilities.

Because here is something from Taylor about this song:

“This song is about those relationships that are never really done. You always kind of have that person, that one person who you feel might interrupt your wedding and be like, ‘Don’t do it cause we’re not over yet’. I think everybody has that one person who kind of floats in and out of their life, and the narrative is never truly over.”

This is a demonstration of Taylor declaring their story is still not done is still being written. Which is beautiful and inspiring, because now I’d LOVE to see Harry crash Taylor’s wedding.

Secret message of this track: “her heart belonged to someone who couldn’t stay”.

Can both sides of the party make a physical move to reach out for each other instead of just communicating through song lyrics?

Implication: There is a Definite Timeline in Place for the CO

I’m not claiming to be an insider - I have no idea what the timeline looks like - but I would argue that the reconciliation/friends narrative with Taylor Swift points to a pretty definite planned timeline for HL coming out. Here’s why:

Taylor Swift is Too Smart to Leave Anything Up to Chance

We’ve all said that the “helping out a friend” narrative had to happen so Taylor didn’t look bad later, but what people have to remember was that Haylor wasn’t some deal brokered by Ed Sheeran in a bar.  It was a deal struck between both of their teams and there would’ve been a contract with the terms explicitly stated.  I believe Taylor (& her team) to be one of the smartest in the industry, so they’re not going to just take 1DHQ’s word for it that they’ll paint Taylor in a good light.  I bet you anything the contract includes a provision for when the shift to “friends” had to happen in relation to the planned come out date.  Since we have the friendship narrative, it means the team has a date in mind.

Best Guess: Six Month Clause

So like I said above, I don’t have any insider info, but from a sales perspective I’ve always thought the best time for a CO would be right before they drop their fifth album.  They’d already have a single out, so they’d have something to sell during the immediate attention and then all eyes would be on them when they dropped their album.

So when are they going to drop their fifth album? Well let’s look at the pattern:

  • UAN release date: 18 November 2011
  • TMH release date: 9 November 2012
  • MM release date: 25 November 2013
  • Four release date: 17 November 2014

Just a guess, but I think they might drop the album in November. And do you know what’s exactly six months before November? Do you? It’s May.

Not only that, but I think six months makes a lot of sense from Taylor Swift’s perspective.  Too soon before and people will notice the coincidence and say she’s just covering her ass, but too long before and the friends narrative won’t seem true/relevant. Six months before would mean that no one except diehard fans would remember that picture when the time comes, but it gives the media the opportunity to say “Taylor Swift was pictured hanging out with Louis Tomlinson at a party after this year’s BBMAs“ without sounding like they’re grasping at straws/relying on ancient info.

Bottom line: It was always the plan for Taylor to come out of this looking good.  In order for that to happen, the timing of this friendship narrative is just as important as the narrative itself.  She would’ve ensured that was included in any bearding contracts. So they wouldn’t have started the friendship narrative if they didn’t have a pretty solid idea of when HL were going to come out.

Why Wonderland is Haylor AF

It’s been so long since I have done one of these! 1989 carries many similar motifs throughout its respective song lyrics, like the whole disappearing and resurfacing act, light and dark and also descriptions of an imperfect love. I love the Alice in Wonderland references to further communicate the highs and lows of a crazy relationship, rather fitting imagery! Just because this song is on a deluxe album doesn’t mean you can neglect the Haylor beauty! Aside from the obvious (green eyes = Harry’s green eyes, the pun “Cheshire” - Harry was born in Cheshire and the Cheshire Cat always had this element of mystery surrounding him), Wonderland is a pretty much assumed to be Haylor-centric.

Flashing lights and we
Took a wrong turn and we
Fell down a rabbit hole

The opening line with flashing lights literally plunges us into the action. Flashing lights could represent the constant plague of paparazzi’s trying to take their shots (they take their shots but we’re bulletproof - I Know Places) with the media attention causing tension within their relationship. The themes of light and dark also make another appearance in a 1989 song. Despite light generally having connotations of being sacred, holy and hope, here it suggests that there is blinding side to it, where Taylor didn’t really comprehend where this was heading and thus she “fell down the rabbit hole” into a world of mystery and craziness. I interpret the first line in a way as a foreshadow, it’s like how light cannot exist without the looming darkness or how as long as there is light, there will always be shadows.

You held on tight to me
Cause nothing’s as it seems and spinning out of control

They were grasping onto each other as they ventured into this new journey. As long as they were together, it seemed as if nothing was wrong (or maybe they were real oblivious but nah). They were all they had especially since everybody was antagonizing them. (No one can forget how insane 2012 online verbal abuse was) So they had to hold onto each other tightly as everything surrounding them shattered into pieces.

The composition part of this song also greatly contributes to this story-line. Musically, it’s serves as a twist. While the opening bars were of an enchanted and whimsical melody, heading into the pre-chorus marks an upbeat almost panicky rhythm. This is where they find themselves in the deep end, where everything becomes real, and is used to demonstrate the shift between the beginning stages of a sweet innocent romance to a spinning out of control relationship full of anxiety. (Hello, Out of The Woods?)

Didn’t they tell us don’t rush into things?
Didn’t you flash your green eyes at me?
Haven’t you heard what becomes of curious minds?
Didn’t it all seem new and exciting?
I felt your arms twistin’ round me
I should have slept with one eye open at night

There’s a lot of fast-paced questions firing out that deliberately intend as perhaps, a critical self-reflection on what exactly went wrong in this relationship. This is especially contrasting to the soft nature of verse one. The first line of the pre-chorus suggests that maybe if they took things slower, or tested out the waters first, things might have played out in a different way. As the saying goes, “curiosity killed the cat”. If Alice didn’t follow the white rabbit because of her curiosity, she might’ve never landed upon Wonderland. All the problems and chaos that arise when she entered the world would have never occurred either if Alice had ultimately, not followed the rabbit. The word “twisting” indicates a sense of hopelessness and trapped fear. Before it was just holding onto each other as each other’s rocks, now it seems more toxic? Interesting choice of words. Like one of Taylor’s previous songs “Eyes Open”, there’s the idiom of keeping your guard up and be aware of threats around you. In retro perspective to the relationship, Taylor should have had her defense up to not get hurt in this process.

Linking this to Alice in Wonderland, Alice’s experience in Wonderland came to a halt when she discovered it was all just a dream. We can assume that likewise with Haylor, she was living a idealistic dream when there are heaps of concern regarding the realistic nature of the world. Maybe she shouldn’t have gotten all wrapped in a fictional dream landscape that never existed.

We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it
And we pretended it could last forever
We found Wonderland you and I got lost in it
And life was never worse but never better
In Wonderland
In Wonderland
In Wonderland

Similar depictions of Haylor like in the previous analysis I did of I Wish You Would.

“Harry knows just the way to get Taylor frustrated for some bitter banters or silly arguments. Haylor was an exhilarating roller coaster of love full of ups and downs. They poured their soul into their relationship, where sometimes things were magnificent but sometimes they fell into despair of emptiness. It was a “crazy stupid love” in a way, where the both of them were mad.”

Wonderland expresses the confusing and exciting point in the relationship. They knew it was going to end at some point, but during the course of it, they were so lost within, feeling all the emotions and acted as though it would always continue on. It’s rather passionate and while it brings them to the position of being stuck in the middle, they still had their thrills and definite excitement.

So we went on our way, too in love to think straight
All alone or so it seemed
But there was strangers watching
And whispers turned to talking
And talking turned to screams, oh

Haylor can be described as a “whirlwind romance”. Their relationship suffered from a huge amount of publicity and even when they believed they were alone, there was always at least someone watching them carefully like the nosy paparazzi and some adamant fans. Back to Alice in Wonderland, doesn’t this remind you of the Cheshire Cat? He was always watching Alice and can make himself invisible whenever he wants. She doesn’t know he’s watching her, but he is.

It’s all fun and games till somebody loses their mind

In one word: mad.

I reached for you but you were gone
I knew I had to go back home
You searched the world for something else
To make you feel like what we had
And in the end, in Wonderland
We both went mad

When this narrative finally screeched to a full stop with Harry gone, Taylor realises she has to move on from him. Going back home suggests what everything was before Alice stepped foot in Wonderland, before tumbling down the rabbit hole. I sense a sort of wistfulness in the lyrics. Harry looked for another girl to make him feel the same way as Taylor had made him feel. After the inevitable split, they both went mad. Depending on whether it was dealing with the heartbreak or being totally angry with each other because of it, either way they are a changed person because of the relationship.

I feel like after analyzing this song, to an extent this song does contain a negative outlook on Haylor (like at the beginning of the song). It’s practically categorised as exhibit A toxic harmful dangerous relationship. But from what I’ve learned when reading Alice in Wonderland, madness and craziness aren’t exactly perceived as a bad thing. Either way, with songs like Style, I’m sure we don’t have to worry too much.
