The Little-Known Company That Enables Worldwide Mass Surveillance
Internal Endace documents reveal the firm’s key role helping governments harvest vast amounts of data on private emails, chats, and browsing histories.

IT WAS A POWERFUL piece of technology created for an important customer. The Medusa system, named after the mythical Greek monster with snakes instead of hair, had one main purpose: to vacuum up vast quantities of internet data at an astonishing speed.

The technology was designed by Endace, a little-known New Zealand company. And the important customer was the British electronic eavesdropping agency, Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ.

Dozens of internal documents and emails from Endace, obtained by The Intercept and reported in cooperation with Television New Zealand, reveal the firm’s key role helping governments across the world harvest vast amounts of information on people’s private emails, online chats, social media conversations, and internet browsing histories.

The leaked files, which were provided by a source through SecureDrop, show that Endace listed a Moroccan security agency implicated in torture as one of its customers. They also indicate that the company sold its surveillance gear to more than half a dozen other government agencies, including in the United States, Israel, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Spain, and India.

Some of Endace’s largest sales in recent years, however, were to the United Kingdom’s GCHQ, which purchased a variety of “data acquisition” systems and “probes” that it used to covertly monitor internet traffic.

Documents from the National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, previously disclosed by The Intercept, have shown how GCHQ dramatically expanded its online surveillance between 2009 and 2012. The newly obtained Endace documents add to those revelations, shining light for the first time on the vital role played by the private sector in enabling the spying.

Stuart Wilson, Endace’s CEO, declined to answer questions for this story. Wilson said in a statement that Endace’s technology “generates significant export revenue for New Zealand and builds important technical capability for our country.” He added: “Our commercial technology is used by customers worldwide … who rely on network recording to protect their critical infrastructure and data from cybercriminals, terrorists, and state-sponsored cybersecurity threats.”

ENDACE SAYS IT manufactures technology that allows its clients to “monitor, intercept and capture 100% of traffic on networks.” The Auckland-based company’s motto is “power to see all” and its logo is an eye.

The company’s origins can be traced back to Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand. There, in 1994, a team of professors and researchers began developing network monitoring technology using university resources. A central aim of the project was to find ways to measure different kinds of data on the internet, which was at that time only just beginning to take off. Within a few years, the academics’ efforts proved successful; they had managed to invent pioneering network monitoring tools. By 2001, the group behind the research started commercializing the technology — and Endace was formed.

Today, Endace presents itself publicly as focused on providing technology that helps companies and governments keep their networks secure. But in the past decade, it has quietly entered into a burgeoning global spy industry that is worth in excess of an estimated $5 billion annually.

So if y'all haven't heard about Pumpkin Online yet...

It’s time to EDUCATE YO'SELF.

pumpkinonline is a farming and dating RPG game (inspired by Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing, if you’re into that) currently in the works. It’s gonna be the BEST DAMN MMORPG ON THE INTERWEBS, and I’ll tell you why:

  • it will feature NPCs of multiple skin tones, physical ability levels, and body types.
  • Character creation will feature MANY more skin tones than most RPGs allow (the creators are even designing a character with vitiligo).
  • You won’t have to choose your character’s gender until AFTER YOU’VE CREATED YOUR AVATAR, so trans* and nonbinary characters will be not only encouraged, but freaking possible. Your character can have any body you want–from rail-thin to “chubby”, big breasted or flat-chested, muscular or wiry–and THEN you get to choose how they identify.
  • Your character can date or marry any NPC or player character in the game world, regardless of body or gender. Multiple player characters can date the same NPC and each play as if they are the only character dating that NPC.
  • Into polyamory? Cool! You can date multiple NPCs in the game without drama, and will also be able to negotiate polyamorous relationships with other players in the game who are into it too!
  • Asexual/aromantic? Also cool! Dating isn’t required in the game, and physical affection is mostly just implied rather than explicitly shown. You can farm to your heart’s content and make best friends with NPCs and other characters if that’s all you want to do.
  • The head of the design team for the game is an African-American woman. Supporting diversity in gaming companies FTW.
  • Speaking of the design team, they have been super helpful and responsive to people who want representation in the game. If you look at what’s being designed and you feel left out for some reason, contact them and they’ll try to fix it!

The reason I’m putting so much effort into this post is because Pumpkin Online, this massively inclusive and positive (and fun looking!) game is still in the fundraising process. They have 20 days (as of today) to raise $22,000 for the project. They have staggered levels of rewards on Kickstarter; a minimum $20 donation will get you beta access to the game. If you want this game to become a real thing, go donate here or at least signal boost the pumpkin guts out of this. Please. For me.

Which Mass Effect Character should you fight?

(idk if anyone else has done this it’s probably been done but whatevs)

Joker: Why the fuck would you want to fight Joker, you asshole? Dude has goddamn hollow bones and makes brilliant jokes. You’d win, but a) you’d be an asshole and b) EDI would evacuate the air out of the room you’re next alone in. Don’t fight Joker.

EDI: I’m not saying you should’t fight EDI, because she’d probably welcome it as a valuable learning experience, but I am somewhat puzzled as to how you think you’d do it. Her body is a spaceship. If you fought her Cerberus body, she’d win, and then use the analysis of the fight to get better at fighting. Don’t fight EDI.

Vega: You know what? Go for it. You’ll get your ass kicked, but Vega will probably buy you a beer afterwards. Fight Vega.

Wrex: Don’t fight Wrex. He’d win, and he’d probably prefer to just talk over a beer. Don’t fight Wrex.

Grunt: One the other hand, definitely fight Grunt. You will get fucking annihilated, but he wants you to do it and will consider you a sibling eternally, so the benefits outweigh the costs.

Jack: Don’t fight Jack. She’d win, and tbh she really needs a hug and someone to talk to.

Zaeed: Fight Zaeed. Jsut do it you piece of fuckign-

Tali: You monster.

Garrus: I’m not saying you shouldn’t fight Garrus, but there’s a good chance you’ll end up banging him. On second thought, definitely fight Garrus.

Javik: Don’t fight Javik. He’ll rip your spleen out through your throat and make some comment about how weak primitives are.

Kasumi: You’d probably win, if you could catch her, but you can’t catch her, so you’d lose and end up with nothing in your wallet.

Kaidan: He’d kick your ass, but the effort would give him a migraine. Probably don’t fight Kaidan.

Ashley: She’d definitely kick your ass. Don’t fight her.

Miranda: Just don’t.

Mordin: On the one hand, he’s pretty awesome, but on the other hand he did help perpetuate a genocide. Fight Mordin, but be aware that he’d probably win. Dude killed a Krogan with a pitchfork.

Kai Leng: Literally everyone wants you to fight Kai Leng, but he’s a cybernetically-enhanced assassin, so you’d probably lose. Best just to point him out to Shepard and let her take care of it.

Hackett: Dude left Shepard to take care of all his dirty work. Definitely fight him, but do it on his day off so you don’t disrupt humanity’s military apparatus.

Jacob: You might be able to win, but tbh he’s so bland I can’t think of a reason you’d want to fight him.

Traynor: You’d win because she’s the literal personification of a chess club weakling, but why would you even want to? Don’t fight Traynor.

The Illusive Man: Fucking fight The Illusive Man. Kick his ass, the prick.

Samara: You’d lose. Don’t try.

Legion: You’d probably lose, but it might help the Geth understand people better. Fight them, but only if they ask.

Cortez: This one could go either way tbh but Steve’s a likable dude so only fight him if he asks you. If he doesn’t ask you, fight Vega instead.

The Engineers: Fight Donnely, he needs a thrashing tbh, but not the others.

Chakwas: Why even would you, tbh.

Pressly: He’s kind of an asshole but he’s the Normandy’s XO so he’s gotta be something of a badass. I’ll leave this up to you.

Shepard: Son, just don’t.

Most of the world’s exploited labor comes from women. Women work in the sweatshops and the giant factories. Women sow and tend and harvest the world’s crops. Women carry and birth and raise children. Women wash and clean and shop and cook. Women care for the sick and the elderly. All of this - layer upon layer of labor - is what makes human society possible. Ripping it off is what makes capitalism possible.

My guide book arrived today, so I took pic of the character concept pages (which actually my main reason for getting the guide, tbh).

There are comics, too, but they’re like overall and mostly about game basic since the comics are in fact part of the guide.

Sorry if the size are gigantic or something, since I uploaded this from my phone.

Speaking of which, according to the note, both protagonists’ design seem to be Igusa’s most favorite for this game.
