ok but imagine you’re sitting in bed at night, harry writing in his journal, you reading a book. but you can’t concentrate because harry has been staring at you for quite some time now and it’s making you feel weird. so you turn to look at him and find him looking at you in awe and something else that you can’t really pinpoint. “ what’s the matter, h?”, you giggle quietly, reaching out to stroke his hair which causes him to hum in delight. he looks at you for a while and then all at once spills what’s on his mind: “ ‘ve been thinking of marrying yeh, tha’s all. “ your hand stops scratching and you look him in the eye. it’s not that you don’t want to marry him, in fact you’d love to, but you had talked about it before and you made it clear that you didn’t want to get married until your and his lives were in order and everything was right. he takes your wrist in his hand and starts leaving small little pecks. “ m’ not proposin’ right now if tha’s wha yeh think. yeh told me before how yeh didn’t feel like doin’ tha’ any time soon an’ i respect that.” he held you tightly now, arms around your waist. “however,’ he continued, ‘ tha’s not goin’ to stop me from givin’ yeh one of my rings until i get yeh a real one someday.” he slid his rose ring off his finger and put it on yours, kissing your hand after. “someday.” you added, smiling graciously at him.
So, on Friday, me & @captiveharts read the lyrics of this song almost at the
same time, and then when we started discussing them, we realized we both had
thought the same thing. Yes, we do think it’s a song about stunting, and we
do think it’s about a stunt in particular. Not b*bygate, though, but H*ylor
(that is probably the stunt lol). And Harry saying this song started as
a joke at the Breakfast Show with Nick, made us think this probably started as
a “you know, i really need to get this off my chest” thing: it started as a
joke meaning that he probably wanted to make fun of her and of her habit of
writing about her exes. It was probably just “a bit of a banter,” & then at
some point, they must have gone like “you know, this could be good,” &
turned into a proper song.
But with no further delay, let’s start our analysis.
worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes
Hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect.”
first line can be a metaphor of how TS started from the bottom as a Miss Nothing
& then turned into a pop princess/America’s sweetheart™,
second line can be about how business-woman-alike she always acts. Everyone
always says – even if she enjoys acting like a naive little girl – she’s
actually really smart (& she knows it).
all the boys, they were saying they were into it,”
“all the boys” are obviously all the men TS stunted with
of whom are surrounded by gay rumours,
every single rom-com cliché (no, Tom Hiddleston, I haven’t forgiven you yet for
going around with that hideous I <3 TS tank top)
“Into it” can also be interpreted as a way of
accepting a deal, & getting along with it.
a pretty face, on a pretty neck.”
this one really need an explanation?
New York, baby, always jacked up,
Whole tunnels, foreign noises always
NYC plays a big role both in TS’ personal life, and for the whole length
of that mess that was H*ylor.
lines Harry & his co-authors wrote seem in fact to mock a bit TS’s Welcome
to New York (Walkin’ through a crowd, the village is aglow / Kaleidoscope of a
loud, heartbeats under coats)
and Taylor are papped several times together in NYC:
first time they were spotted together was in Central Park
went to 1D’s after party after their concert at the MSG,
were both papped again in NYC while leaving their hotels
were seen together at the Jingle Ball’s backstage
of course there’s the whole super yikes NYE ball drop thing.
she’s alone, she goes home to a cactus,”
is probably the most “obscure” line in the whole song, but we thought it could
mean that she’s basically going home alone, finding nothing but a plant in her
empty house. TS likes surrounding herself with people – her “squad”, her
countless boyfriends – but at the end of the day, these are mostly stunts. We
don’t know which relationships she has are actually real (*cough* Karlie i
know you’re real *cough*), but most of them are probably just for the sake
of the press and the media.
a black dress, she’s such an actress,”
is actually known for wearing a lot of black dresses/outfits
referred to herself as “the girl in the dress” in Dear John (The girl
in the dress cried the whole way home and The girl in the dress wrote
you a song).
the actress thing, well:
is literally an actress as well since she played a couple of roles in some
movies (Valentine’s Day, The Giver, etc),
she’s an actress metaphorically because of all
of her stunts & the girl next door image she’s built for herself.
with this line, Harry also seems to mock an old TS’s song, Better Than
Revenge, where on her turn, she was mocking a girl who had “stolen her
boyfriend from her” (She’s not a saint & she’s not what you think / she’s
an actress, oh oh / she’s better known for the things that she does / on the
mattress, oh oh).
me crazy, but I’m into it, but I’m into it, I’m kinda into it,
It’s getting crazy, I think I’m losing it, I think I’m losing it.”
first of all, crazy. Harry repeats it twice in each chorus, & he
stresses it when he sings it.
is definitely a word that comes up to everybody’s mind when they think of TS:
of the psycho girlfriend image that has been build up around her public persona
(there are loads of parodies on Youtube, media have often talked about it)
eventually, she has – very smartly – referenced it herself in Shake It Off
and especially Blank Space (and in fact she acts like a psychopath in
the Blank Space music video, mocking the idea that the GP & the
media have of her).
“crazy” is a term she often uses in her own songs as well,
Picture To Burn (Tell you friends I’m obsessive & crazy, that’s fine,
I’ll tell mine that you’re gay),
■ I’m Only Me When I’m With You (You drive me crazy half of the time), etc
uses it in the initial monologue in the I Knew You Were Trouble music
she has a whole song called Crazier.
whole “into it” escalation, on the other hand, seems like a young Harry
trying to convince himself that this stunt won’t be this bad:
managers were probably telling him how a good idea this would be, how his
popularity would increase, he must have told himself that he would have survived this, that he’d have managed to appear
to realize that no, he wouldnt have been able to do this cause the whole stunt was
getting insane, and that H*ylor was the worst thing ever (for both him &
Louis), and that’s why he then proceeds to sing “I think I’m losing it”.
think she said ‘I’m having your baby, it’s not of your business’”.
course, this is a metaphor. this girl mentioned in this song sounds extremely
bossy, and lowkey psycho, and that’s a great description for TS (her public
persona, at least).
is TS saying: “I want all the promo I can get, and I don’t care if you hate it.
We signed a deal, so now shut your mouth cause I’m getting what I want.” She’s
stubborn, she doesn’t think about him anymore, she just wants to help herself
and, indeed, she has done that even way after the end of H*ylor, publicly
shading Harry, and implying that great part of 1989 (& not only) was
written about Harry (and by the way, there have also been rumours, back during H*ylor, that TS was indeed pregnant of Harry).
○ Harry might have also take inspiration from another stunt (*cough cough* b*abygate *cough cough*) for this particular line
“She sits beside me like a silhouette,
Hard candy dripping on me till my feet are wet.”
are the infamous lines that made people accusing Harry of encouraging pedophily
(yikes). First of all, we definitely don’t think Harry was aware of the
metaphorical meaning of “hard candy” (I had no idea either), and we
actually think that “hard candy” is just the name of a drink, a very girly one
btw, that for sure would fit TS’s sweetheart image, and of course it’d make
sense since Harry sings that “it’s dripping on him till his feet are wet.” (And
btw, there’s also a scene in the Blank Space mv where Taylor eats a hard
candy & the camera focuses on her face).
now she’s all over me,”
she was quite literally all over him during H*ylor
she made sure to stay all over him with all the songs she implied were about
like I paid for it, it’s like I paid for it, I’m gonna pay for it.”
here might refer initially to the whole stunt thing: their
relationship is nothing but a fauxmance, it’s literally hiring someone to play
then, he refers to when the realization of what was going on sank in: he was gonna pay the consequences for this
stunt for a long, long time (in fact, he still is since media still ask him
conclusion, this song seems to us Harry’s reply at all the songs she implied
were about him, at all the very obvious attempts of shading him she’s done
through the years. But this song, this is not a Style 2.0, it’s not even
another Perfect. This is extremely subtle, and one can get the
reference only reading carefully into the lyrics. It’s Harry’s way to get back
at her, but in a classy way (unlike hers), and by mocking Better Than Revenge,
he’s basically saying: “Take this, Taylor. There is nothing I do
better than revenge.”
You guys, I have waited way to long for this album to come out. I’M SHOOK (I might say that a lot), But here is my (honest) opinion on each song and at the end I’ll give my overall opinion on the album.
(These are all just my opinions! We all are all allowed our own)
Here we go…
Meet Me in the Hallway
VIBES VIBES VIBES
Such an amazing song and I honestly was shocked he made a song that sounds like that (well actually that goes for all the songs on this album). But I honestly really liked the song. I like the way his voice sounded in the song too. It’s pretty emotional too.
Sign of the times
I mean I’ve heard this song a hundred times and each time it’s a great experience. I love the vocals, and I love the lyrics! Every time I hear it on radio I bump up the volume and just freaking soak in his voice. I think he made a great move choosing it as his first single.
When I hear the song I just feel proud.
I loved it literally right away! IT’S A BOP! Lyrics and vocals 10/10!!!! I was so happy he made a song that sounded like this.
It kinda makes me want to go to the beach and run around in a small faded orange bikini ( I actually am a west coaster ;P)
This song got me caught up in my feelings. Lots of emotion in there and it kinda made my heart hurt just a little. Lyrics are great and vocals on point. It kinda sounds like it could’ve been on One Direction’s Made in the AM album, honestly.
“Trying to remember how it feels to have a heart beat”
It’s so soft and calm and it weirdly feels safe? Like I feel if I’m scared and I listen to the song it’ll make me feel better! Yeah…don’t have much else to say about this one. Obviously his vocals were amazing!
But it’s the song I’ve listened to the least. In my opinion compared to the other songs on this album it’s not as interesting (that doesn’t mean I don’t like it, I do, I really do, but not as much as the rest)
I thought it was going to be another slow emotional song but then he hit it with the “HEY, HEY” and I was like OH MY GOD YES HARRY. This song helped me start to see the more rock n’ roll side of Mr. Styles. LYRICS KILLED ME!!!! VOCALS KILLED ME!!!! THE GUITAR KILLED ME!!!! THE WHOLE SOND KILLED ME!!! Defiantly one of my favorites!
This is the song I dance around my house to in only underwear.
Fucking definition of rock star!!! Another song that shocked me.
The weird thing about this song is that it actually made me cry real tears because I didn’t know how much of a true rockstar harry could be. The lyrics make no fucking sense but I loved it!!
I’m not joking I started crying, then I started rocking out.
Ever Since New York
Its been stuck in my head since SNL…It’s kinda simple are really repetitive and I usually wouldn’t like songs like that but I genuinely am obsessed! I honestly don’t know why, I really love Ever Since New York
HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE SONG! This song is so full of spunk and sensuality and thats the shit i’ve wanted from Harry since he’s been solo! I’ve been listening to this song non-stop. It has the right amount of vulnerability and sexuality without being raunchy at all! The lyrics are engraved in my head and that FREAKING GUITAR! I could say so much for this song, because I absolutely love it.
It kinda brings out this inner vixen in me (plus it’s a good song to have sex to)
From the Table
Honest (that word sums it up)
I feel like this song is painfully honest and it makes me actually feel something. You can tell this was written from some sort of experience of his and you have to respect that bravery. I LOVED his voice in this. I want to give him a hug after listening to this!
Over all the album was a solid for me and really made me see Harry in a different and more mature way, and thats what we needed form him!!
The lyrics weren’t turn over or made “appropriate”, It was all raw and true and I’m very satisfied. I didn’t want a PG album. I’m proud of Harry and he deserves all success he’s receiving.
I recommend this album to EVERYONE, because I think it has a song in it that everyone, young and old, will love!
Even though I don’t have tickets, seeing how he performs these songs live (through video) will be amazing and I can’t wait to see the kind of energy he has when he performs these songs!
It actually shocked me and It impressed me, and I really can’t wait for his future work.
This is short and not that great but I think it’s been on all our minds lately… Only 3.5 more hours until we hear it for real!
It was bright in the room, you were wide awake in bed, and Harry was pacing the room anxiously- but it was 2am.
“Can’t believe everyone’s gonna hear my song soon. This is the weirdest feeling.” He spoke, pausing to look in the mirror while he took a deep breath.
“Stop worrying; everyone’s going to love it.” You smiled and masked another yawn.
After finishing all the pre-recorded radio shows he’d be doing, he’d come back to the states to spend time with you before his single came out. He knew he wanted to be with you when it was played on the radio for the first time, because you had a way of calming his nerves during moments like these. The only downside was the time-zones; you had to wake up in the middle of the night to hear his interview.
Your laptop was open on the bed and you were excitedly awaiting the moment when the first notes of Harry’s song would come through the speakers. He flopped down on the mattress next to you, giving you an exasperated look as soon as you turned to him.
“Didn’t expect to be this nervous.” He sighed, glancing back to your laptop screen to check the time. There were only a few more minutes until the world would be introduced to Harry Styles- the solo artist.
“C'mere.” You opened your arms and he scooted into you, and you kissed his forehead gently.
“Everything’s gonna be fine. The song is incredible, and it’s just so… you. You know that as well as I do, baby.”
He smiled thankfully at you and he honestly didn’t know how he managed to get so lucky. He’d found someone who not only accepted his career, but was there every step of the way. He appreciated it even more at times like these when he knew he wouldn’t survive without you.
You leaned forward to grab your laptop as the time finally came. Harry sat up a little straighter and took a deep, shaky breath as you turned up the volume on your laptop.
You reached your hand out so it sat on his lap and he took it quickly, squeezing gently as a thank you. Harry’s familiar voice filled the room as he made the announcement that his song was about to play.
As the first lyrics came through the speakers, some of the tension seemed to fade away. Harry was staring down at your hands, looking somewhat pleased and free of nerves. The five minutes of the song went by surprisingly quickly, and when it finished, you immediately threw your arms around Harry.
“Oh my gosh, that was so good. I’m so proud of you, H.”
He chuckled and squeezed you a little tighter.
“Thank you so much. Means the world you could be with me today.” He whispered, gently pressing his lips to the side of your head.
You immediately grabbed your phone and opened up Twitter, turning your phone around to Harry every time a positive tweet from a fan caught your eye. By the time you were finished, he was smiling ear to ear and he couldn’t be happier with the way everything was turning out.
He pulled you back into him, a content sigh leaving his lips as he finally relaxed. “I should be celebrating, but I’m exhausted.” He laughed, looking over at the clock and noticing how late it really was. It was starting to sink in now that the song was out, but it just left him feeling relieved enough to sleep.
“Good, because I’m going to bed.” You joked, and he laid down alongside you and pulled you closer.
“You know I really am proud of you, right?” You turned to look at him, and you swore you caught him blush.
“You’ve said it a few times, yeah.” He chuckled, “Thank you so much for this. All the support you’ve given me… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
You leaned in to softly press your lips against his.
“It’s been my pleasure.”
Within a few minutes, you were both sound asleep, knowing the world would never live another day without knowing who Harry was as an artist.
