The year is 1934 and Harry Styles was to inherent the largest tobacco firm in the south. His parents have picked out the “perfect” girl for him to marry and he has the privilege of receiving the highest education possible. The problem was, Harry hadn’t realized he didn’t actually want any part of that future until he met a mechanic named, Louis Tomlinson.
“Whoa there, Stud. Don’t want the missus to find out?”
“Not even close,” Harry laughed as he turned back to the mirror and continued to rub the irritated skin. “Got set up on a date and she’s a bit, um, different.”
“Don’t think she’ll like it much if you scrub all that off,” The other man leisurely shrugged.
As the lipstick continued to spread over his skin, Harry whined, “Seeing as how I’m supposed to be on stage soon, that’s the least of my worries.“
He gently scoffed, “Performer, huh?”
Harry glanced over and saw the man take his bandana off with a smirk. He ran the material under the running faucet and put a dollop of soap on it. Turning to face Harry, he expectantly held out the bandana.
“Take it,” He pushed the material closer to Harry. “It’ll work better than whateva you were gonna do.”
“You sure?” Harry hesitantly asked, looking between the soapy bandana and the man’s face.
He rolled his eyes and laughed, “I’d hope so since I already did it. Just take it.”
“Thanks,” Harry mumbled and he took the bandana, turning back forwards to wash off the remainder of the lipstick.
“Good luck out there,” The man drawled as he walked towards the door.
“Wait, I still have your –” Harry started, but was cut off.
“Keep it,” He looked over his shoulder at Harry and flashed him a quick smile. “Seems like you’ll need it more than me, Stud.”
Harry Styles’ parents have instilled the best qualities in him. He is such a hard worker, never complains, and always gets the job done. He takes challenges head on (competing in x factor, acting, doing a solo album). And he does it all without stepping on anyone on the way up. He’s always kind and gracious, and I know this because everyone he has worked with has spoken on that fact. I am so proud to be his fan. So, so proud.
Summary: Louis sighs and gives himself a mental pep talk as he smooths his jumper down over his hips. He can do this. He can resist the draw of Harry Styles, because he is a responsible, mature adult, and as much as he wants to tangle his fingers in that mess of hair and map those ridiculous tattoos with his tongue, he does not want to get his daughter’s favorite teacher fired.
And the foreboding slammed into him. Because every product had letters next to it. Letters. GF, DF, V, O, VGN.
What. The. Fuck?
Lifting his eyes to the chalkboard menu spread across the back wall Louis felt physically ill. ‘Gluten-free’, ‘organic’, ‘vegan’, ‘paleo’, ‘dair-…’ Wait, what the fuck was a paleo? He had entered some hipster-trash establishment and it was more than time to get out.
OR Louis is a single dad and Harry works at the newly opened bakery down the street.
Summary: “Did you clean the table?” Harry asks Louis once Rose is done speaking, now occupied with trying to see if she can reach over and touch Harry’s hair from where she’s sat. At Louis’ nod, Harry frowns. “You didn’t have to do that. You’re my guests here, I could’ve dealt with it later.”
Louis just smiles easily, though, adjusting Rose on his lap so that she’s facing Harry better. She manages to tug on a loose wave of hair, and she makes a noise of triumph that both Louis and Harry smile at.
“I don’t mind,” Louis murmurs to Harry, even though he’s looking at Rose. “This one here seemed very excited to talk to you.”
And, okay. Harry can’t help but think of how domestic this feels, all of a sudden.
[harry is a photographer who’s trying to find his place. louis is a single father with a smile that feels like home.]
Summary: Louis is the father to the most brilliant little boy in the world who is all Louis really needs, or at least that’s what he tells himself. Harry is a gorgeous boybander fresh off a two year break and a massive scandal that’s left him a little broken and more than ready to move on.
Summary: Louis never intended to fall in love with Harry: not five years into their time together in the band, not when they’re living on opposite continents, and especially not when he’s the new dad to a tiny human with way too much personality for anyone under nine pounds. Yet somehow Harry manages to worm his way into Louis’ life with every bit of weird affinity for Swedish homegoods and expensive baby clothes that you’d expect.
Summary: Louis had such big plans. He wanted so much out of life, and so did Amy. Now Bridget is going to grow up without a mother, and she’s always going to wonder what it would be like if this hadn’t happened. He wonders if she’ll blame him for her mother’s death as she gets older, or if she’ll understand that this is just as painful for Louis as it is for her. Louis doesn’t know how he’s going to raise her on his own, because he’s a fantastic father, yes, but he’s always been the fun parent, and Amy was in charge of the rules. He doesn’t know how to make sure Bridget has everything she needs all the time, doesn’t know how to make her favorite meal or how to do that one braid she loves to have in her hair or how to teach her to be the best person she can be. He doesn’t know how to live without Amy, he doesn’t know what he’s going to do.
Or, Louis has to pick up the pieces of his and his daughter’s life after his wife dies, and Harry is a beautiful stranger that just wants to help.
Summary: When Louis Tomlinson had a son, he had to set aside things like one-night stands and parties for mortgages and PTA meetings. Harry Styles, an adorable, dorky popstar, definitely falls under ‘Things Responsible Adults Should Avoid.’ Then again, Louis has never been that great with responsibility.
Louis is the best older brother anyone could ask for. He knows this because he’s agreed to help chaperone his younger sister’s school trip to Rome. As it turns out, Italy is full of surprises. Fizzy’s Italian teacher is surprisingly hot, Rome is surprisingly interesting, and Louis is surprisingly falling in love with more than just the city.
Louis has zero interest in an ex-boybander turned solo artist when his appearance on the show gets announced, but that’s exactly who he gets stuck with when Harry Styles shows up at the Late Late show to promote the release of his debut album. For an entire fucking week.
Single parent fics are one of my BIGGEST weaknesses. I’ve read all these fics and they’re wonderful! If there’s a fic you love that’s not on this list please let me know so I can read it and include it in the next single parent fic rec I make!
All Louis really cares about is his skateboard, tattoos, football, and his family. He has a job that he (mostly) loves and a (small) handful of good friends, and at 24 he is pretty content with his life… until he nearly crashes into a boy with wild curls and cratered dimples, he begins to think maybe he’s been missing something he never knew was missing. That missing piece is apparently big enough for two.
[Or the one where punk Louis likes to think he’s not clumsy, but he suspects he’ll have to accept it when he falls face first into a relationship with a head full of curls and his tiny human.]
“You know, when I pegged you for a druglord, I wasn’t exactly challenging you to make me believe that you actually are one. What is this place?” Louis says after he swallows over the mild panic that’s building up in his throat over the fact that he’s literally sitting in front of the cause of his teenage sexuality crisis.
or, the famous/nonfamous kid!fic AU wherein harry and louis have to host a school Christmas party and harry isn’t actually a drug lord.
