Chaplin was described by many people as eccentric. Harry d'Arrast, his assistant director in The Gold Rush, told this story about Chaplin’s eccentricity: once when he was in a story conference a fly kept buzzing around him. He tried swatting it several times but missed. Then the fly settled down right before him and Chaplin lifted the swatter for the death blow. Suddenly he paused, looked carefully at the fly, and lowered the swatter. “Why didn’t you swat it?”, he was asked. Shrugging typically, Chaplin said, “It wasn’t the same fly”
