China (pronounced ‘Chee-na’), born as Noelie Dasouza Machado in Shanghai, China, was an iconic fashion model.
Muse to fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy and photographer Richard Avedon in the 1950s and 1960s, China Machado was the first non-Caucasian person to be featured on the cover of US magazine Harper’s Bazaar (February 1959).
In the early 1960s she became senior fashion editor, and later still fashion director, for Harper’s Bazaar, where she worked for 11 years.
Fashion model China Machado died on December 15, 2016. She was 86 or 87 years old. Machado became the first diverse model on the cover of a major magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, in 1959. She continued to model into her 80s, having appeared in a Cole Haan campaign in 2013.
