China (pronounced ‘Chee-na’), born as Noelie Dasouza Machado in Shanghai, China, was an iconic fashion model.

Muse to fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy and photographer Richard Avedon in the 1950s and 1960s, China Machado was the first non-Caucasian person to be featured on the cover of US magazine Harper’s Bazaar (February 1959).

In the early 1960s she became senior fashion editor, and later still fashion director, for Harper’s Bazaar, where she worked for 11 years.
