happy germans make me happy

The more german words I memorize, the better I get at memorizing new words! So if you’re new to learning a language and worry about not being able to memorize vocabulary, please, don’t give up, start with a few words and you’ll eventually get better at retaining new vocabulary in the future!!!! It WILL be easier for you!!!

maybe i misunderstood. i think it's unfortunate if you feel like you can't listen or appreciate your national anthem because of germany's history. obviously nazism was/is horrible, but there's a lot germany could and should be proud of today. many countries, mine included, celebrate what our country stands for through the anthem. i don't think germany stands for nazism anymore, nor should the anthem. so i think it's sad/unfortunate if you can't listen to yours w/o fear of nazi accusations.

Well, I am indeed very happy about a lot of things that are good in Germany.
And I’m very happy to have the random privilege of being born in this country.
We do sing our anthem without hesitation at let’s say, sports events. Which is good. The world cup makes you want to feel like the whole country is on that field y’know all for good fun.

But why would I need to listen or sing the anthem in my freetime? Why would I proudly yell it out?
I can’t be proud of something I haven’t achieved. I did nothing for this country so far.
Being born here and seeing a lot of good things makes me happy, yes. I’m happy to be German. I loved growing up here. I love our food, our jokes, our language, our nature etc. I like Germany.
But why do I need an anthem for that? Why do I need to celebrate that with an anthem?
People who do that, at least here, and feel like they should go all out about how it’s the greatest country in the world while waving flags in your face, you’ll easily find on the rather right side of the political spectrum y’know.

I very well can listen to it. At times at which it’s needed/good (as mentioned before), at times at which it makes sense to get the whole nation/union feeling.
I just don’t understand heavy patriotism. I think it’s harmful, because people tend to develop the feeling of “my country is better than everyone else’s” and that just creates stupid hate??

Yes, it’s somewhat shitty to have to pay more attention to certain things than some other countries. History still weighs heavy on us.
But it’s not sad. Being aware of our history and how the whole “OUR GREAT NATION” blah can do dangerous things while still being able to be happy about living in a good, safe country isn’t sad.

This is a very chaotic response but I hope you understand what I mean.
Yes, I’m happy to be born in Germany and I know the anthem. I might even hum along when some German wins an Olympic medal. And yes, I’m happy people before us managed to give us a democracy, I’m happy we have and had a lot of intelligent people who were born here etc.
But I won’t be proud of something that’s a random privilege.

Public Male Bonding. Over the weekend, a lucky fan met Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, and an unnamed friend while they were out midnight snacking on kebabs because why not.

According to Jessi, Lee didn’t agree to a pic because he’s shy. (which is Lee-speak for “No one’s supposed to know I’m in Berlin because as far as anyone knew, I’ve been filming my new movie in New York.”) Other than that, Jessi seemed to have a lovely encounter.
