happy day before valentines day!

love is in the air

I touched the combination lock. I concentrated so hard I felt like I was dead-lifting five hundred pounds. My pulse quickened. A line of sweat trickled down my nose. Finally I felt gears turning. Metal groaned, tumblers clicked, and the bolts popped back. Carefully avoiding the handle, I pried open the door with my fingertips and extracted an unbroken vial of green liquid.

Thalia kissed me on the cheek, which she probably shouldn’t have done while I was holding a tube of deadly poison.

“You are so good,” she said.

Did that make the risk worth it? Yeah, pretty much.

It Should Have Been Me

A LuNyx AU Fan Fiction

Recommended Music (I highly recommend listening to it cause the lyrics are important to the story.)

Summary: Nyx has recently returned to Insomnia after living in Tenebrae for an extended period of time as Luna’s guardian. His return to Insomnia is one of heartbreak though, as he’s only returned on account of the princess marrying the prince and now once more only being just a glaive. After a long day of being on duty at the wedding ceremony, Nyx’s own feelings begin to strangle him as he realizes he’s in love with the princess he swore to protect.

Author Note: Drabble from my sprawling LuNyx AU once more. Luna does marry Noctis, but it doesn’t last and she’s actually very miserable in her marriage. So, while this is depressing, know that if I ever share the extensive AU story, there is a much happier end with Luna and Nyx. Hopefully Nyx doesn’t seem so dramatic. He just got his heart punched that’s all lmao I’ll post something happier for Valentine’s Day tomorrow, I promise ;w;

Insomnia’s Immigrant District had changed very little in the rebuilding of the Crown City. Even with its new and remodeled buildings and structures, it still was a slum. A reminder that they were still outsiders milling about even after the war. It was once the only place Nyx had to call home, but now it was foreign, like he too didn’t belong there anymore. But the place he finally felt he belonged was now just a distant memory, much like his family in Galahd.

Nyx dragged himself back to his new, but painfully familiar apartment after the long wedding ceremony between Lunafreya and Noctis. While Nyx was on duty, keeping everything in line, as each moment passed, his heart shattered into tiny pieces until he became numb. He watched the ceremony diligently, wishing he didn’t have to be there to witness the last bit of hope in his heart being taken away from him.

When Nyx arrived home, he threw his jacket onto the floor, kicking off his boots and slumped down into his recliner. This was no longer home, but it was going to have to be from now on. He had become so comfortable in the Fleuret Manor. At first it was overwhelming, the sheer size of the manor itself and the life of royalty, but he grew accustomed to it, even if it was only because he was by his princess’s side.

With a heavy sigh, Nyx closed his eyes and the wedding ceremony replayed in his head like a broken record. He remembered watching as Luna and Noctis said their vows and sealed their marriage with a kiss and the selfish words that rang out in his mind as they did so. ‘Please…don’t say I do.’

He knew from the beginning that him of all people had no chance with Princess Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, the Princess of Tenebrae and the Oracle, now the queen. But deep down he had hope. A painful hope that he knew he should have extinguished long before it grew.

He fondly remembered spending days by Luna’s side, attending to her needs and helping her on her town and village trips. He remembered having late night tea with her (which he would never admit he was becoming fond of tea) and staying up late discussing this and that. He grew so used to being by her side and never thought it would end. Then the day came when Luna told him. She told him she was to wed her childhood friend, Prince Noctis, no, now King Noctis.

When Nyx opened his eyes, the unexpected hit him. He had begun to cry. He balled one hand into a fist and slammed it against the arm of the chair. ‘She never would have been mine. Why am I so worked up in the first place?’ he questioned himself as the tears fell. He thought back more to being her personal guardian, her protector, everything he was to her. Now he was just a glaive once more. He still was charged with protecting Luna, but he was no longer by her side as he once was.

He continued to cry in the solitude of his lonely apartment. It really happened, when he tried so hard to prevent it. He had fallen in love with the princess and he began to beat himself down at the realization. He was in love with Lunafreya and he would never have that love returned.

Nyx began to calm himself down. He took slow, steady breaths and reminded himself this was for the best. He would need to move forward. Move past the princess and be her protector and nothing more. But he would first have to heal his broken heart. He consoled himself with the thought that Luna would be happy. She’d be with someone suited for her. Someone who was the one for her. But Nyx couldn’t help but feel his heavy heart continuing to break. He wondered if it would ever stop hurting. He knew she was now another man’s wife. Another man’s queen. He knew that and he needed to respect it.

Once Nyx’s tears ceased and he returned to his stoic and unfeeling exterior, he decided to go to Yama’s. A couple of drinks and food should fix him, right? Or at least he convinced himself it would. Staying in his small box of an apartment would only make him get caught in his own thoughts again.

On his way out, Nyx pulled on his jacket and boots once more, but as he was shoving keys and money into his jacket pockets, he realized something was resting at the very bottom of one. He dug the small object out and the minute he realized what it was, his heart sank once more. It was a small sparkling ring, shaped like a tiara. Aquamarine and diamond stones brightly glimmered in the setting sun light that shone through the window. It was the ring he wished to gift the princess to ask her to be his partner. Something he bought when his false hopes of ever being the princess’s lover were still high. He forgot he had shoved it away in his pocket when he heard of her engagement. Now, realizing how much of a fool he had been, he tossed the ring in the general direction of his desk, the metallic clinking hitting the floor.

Nyx had to remind himself, he wasn’t suited to marry royalty. He was a nothing, a pawn and cannon fodder at best. He couldn’t make a princess happy. Instead another man had beat him to winning her heart. A man who she had known her whole life was now by her side. A man who would love and cherish her more than Nyx believed he ever could. A man who would treat her like the royalty she is, something a dirty immigrant like him could never do.

In the end, Luna married a man who deserved her more than Nyx ever would.

I won’t be posting anything specifically for Valentine’s Day but I thought I’d post a snippet of Upward-Facing Dog’s next chapter (which is currently in the care of my beta reader, @ladycyprus)… If you enjoy reading this, let me know!

Raising to her full height and craning her neck, she swept the top shelf unsuccessfully and it was when she turned around to go back to her seat, a look of defeat on her face, that she saw him across the large room. Her mind went blank because the campus library meant her teachers and her fellow students, not Sandor Clegane.

Yet he was there, he had spotted her and he now strided toward the corner of the room where she stood, ignoring the perplexed students who visibly wondered what a man with his looks was doing in the library.
