Last week saw the launch of OKAPI’s new handbag and accessories collection at African concept store Merchants on Long in Cape Town.

OKAPI is one of the first true, internationally recognised African luxury brands. Founder and designer Hanneli Rupert, a trained fine artist, envisioned producing luxury handbags of exceptional quality that have been manufactured with utmost precision and attention to detail in South Africa. The bags are mostly made by hand, harnessing a wealth of local artisanal skills whilst installing into every bag her off beat creativity and eye for detail. Not only does the brand focus on creating much needed employment opportunity in the country, it is also championing the preservation of traditional craftsmanship - a vital factor that is too often overlooked in new design ventures. The result is a bold collection made from fine, locally sourced materials, and every element of an OKAPI bag is entirely traceable to its origin.

OKAPI has recently launched an online store, where you’ll find more about the back story, watch clips on how the bags are made, and (like me) fall in love with every pretty croc clutch, wallet and handbag. Dibs the red, turquoise, yellow, black …..!
