Your connections had landed you two seats at the White House Poetry Jam. Your friend (who was your definition of ‘connections’) had actually received the invitations, but knew you would appreciate them more.

Your inability to find a date and a cheap babysitter meant your five year old daughter would be accompanying you. You forced her into her nicest holiday dress and was able to drag her along with minimal complaint.

Her attention was thankfully captured when the performances began and you were no longer distracted with making small talk with political giants. You were in the same room as the President, you were on your best behavior.

Jaehyun Prince!AU Part 2

I finished it! I had fun writing this even though I’m not very satisfied with it. The last part was a little bit rushed, sorry. I just realized it’s way past my bedtime but I wanted to finish it, so here it is. Sorry if there’s a lot of grammar mistakes. Like I said, it’s way past my bed time. I’d read this and edit the grammatical error when I have the time! It took a long time to post this one, since my teachers decided to give me a pile of projects to finish before finals.

Currently have some requests in my inbox and I’ll do that when I finish my finals which is in a week. Feel free to leave in more request and also comments for my writing. Hope you enjoy!

My Worlds recap

Here I was, on March 30th, in my hometown Riga with bus and ferry tickets and most importantly - tickets to Ladies practice and Short Dance in my pocket. I could not believe I was going to Worlds after many years of living and breathing figure skating. This was a dream of mine that I thought would never come to life. It felt so surreal I had to pinch myself a few times. 😅

When me and my mom made it to the arena at 8 AM on March 31st, it was so difficult to hold back tears ( i am literally tearing up as i’m writing this 😂). Watching figure skating has been one of the biggest parts of my life for five (!!!) years now and I don’t think I can put my feelings towards it in just some sentences. It is better than all the movies because it’s the real life - but with the spectrum of emotions I only get to see in the cinema. It doesn’t only show “the movie” (aka the performance) but also every behind the scenes action (like the emotions before and after the performance, the training process, the challenges along the way) which makes it so much more interesting. So when I walked in the arena it felt like a dream come true. They didn’t have doors heading to each sector, but a curtain instead (to not make a sound every time someone enters or exits) and because it was the practice time for Ladies the curtains weren’t closed but fully open instead. So even when I had just come in the arena, I could already see a glimpse of the ice rink which felt so surreal and that was the first time it hit me so hard that I was actually really here - at the World Championships.

It felt fantastic to see stars like Ashley Wagner, Kaetlyn Osmond, Gabrielle Daleman, Evgenia Medvedeva, Anna Pogorilaya and Carolina Kostner skate so close to me (we were seated really close to the ice), to see their determined faces and to live through their great performances. Incomparably mesmerizing.

Before the short dance there was some time to kill so we just walked around and enjoyed the atmosphere which is SO unique! There is this buzzing feeling which makes you feel warm and welcomed and everyone looks nervously excited. We walked through every booth/shop there was, I even got some beautiful postcards from John Wilson Blades booth (they were handing them out for free?! 😧) with Ashley, Patrick, the Shibs and Chock/Bates. There I met a lovely French fan and we had a brief talk about our journeys as fans and let me add that it feels so weird to actually talk with someone about figure skating after you’ve mostly only shared your opinions online and have never had a legit conversation live??! 😂

Then it was the time for the short dance (oh my, hearing the ISU fanfare live was hands down the best experience ever 😂😂😂) . I have been a massive ice dance fan since forever and I am a big supporter of Tessa&Scott. They are the main reason I was actually here - I can’t put into words what they’ve done to me in these past years - they have held me up every time I felt down in various ways - with their performances, life stories or just small interviews. I just wanted to give back to them a little with my heartfelt support. However, I joined the V/M fandom in 2012 when everyone was furious about D/W and their success (which would happen in 2013 and 2014) and I quickly learned to be as bitter as everyone else. It feels sad to look back now and think that we used so much time to just talk about Meryl and Charlie - more than about great things of Tessa and Scott. I only understood this after T&S took a break after 2014 and I just became this casual ice dance fan who wanted to see the best in everyone and was listening to everyone’s stories of ups and downs. It was the same fantastic atmosphere - just without all the rage. During this period of time I really fell in love with Kaitlyn&Andrew, Maia&Alex and Gabriella&Guillaume. When Tessa&Scott came back I couldn’t believe how great I felt during the season - it was now 100 times more exciting as I had so many couples I loved and supported throughout (…well, i did love t&s a little more than anyone else though 😆) . And you have NO idea how much I loved the theme of this years SD. SOOOO much spunk and sass! I hope you don’t mind me saying that pretty much all of these were the best short dances I have ever seen from the top teams.

First of all, let me say a word about the atmosphere live. It is absolutely incomparable to the TV. The audience noises are lowered for about ten thousand times and are almost inaudible in the TV which is the biggest change. The ovations are so impressive you can’t believe them at first. Second of all, the skating skills and the speed is insane live. And thirdly of all, the costumes look SO. MUCH. DIFFERENT. (they are much more sparkly and colorful 😍✨).

I was actually worried that I might not last for seven freaking groups but the time went so fast. I still can’t believe the zamboni breaks. I swear to god they didn’t last more than five minutes 😅 (I always get cranky during the resurfacing breaks when I watch TV - feels like hours). From the first four groups couples that stood out for me the most were Smart/Diaz, Kaliszek/Spodyriev and Lauriault/Le Gac - they all had great stage presence and superb feel to the music.

Then the fifth group came. All of a sudden Tessa and Scott were on the ice and I was like one of these crazy Bieber fans who can’t stop their tears. I tried my hardest to bring the tears back but I miserably failed (I had promised myself that I would act NORMALLY NOT START CRYING ON MY FIRST OPPORTUNITY I AM SO WEIRDED OUT OF THE SUDDEN EMOTIONS THAT CAME OUTSIDE IN THAT MOMENT - I am a very reserved person who always puts herself together 😂). Tessa’s costume is SO much more beautiful live. I wasn’t a fan of it when I first saw it but DAMN she looked hot. Also the golden sparkles around the cutouts on the pants are basically not seen at all in the usual professional pics but they were actually unbelievably shiny. And Scott just has this amazing aura around himself. He seemed to ooze confidence but also some sort of humbleness. And OMG - they’re fast. But the thing that struck me the most was the non-touching step sequence. They did it once in the warm up and I legit thought it was some “easy version of this sequence without the hard steps just to get warmed up” and you can’t imagine how surprised I was when they performed it in the actual dance. It WAS the sequence. I swear it looked like anyone could do it. So light and easy. Now THAT was the moment I understood how superior they actually are. Everybody else’s StSq looked, you know, like a StSq should look like - a hard element hard to execute (don’t get me wrong - they were mostly done beautifully but it was visible that this is a hard element - which it is 😆). After the warm up ended I was probably still in shock so I have no recollection of the first two pairs in that group. Sorry. 😁 Then they came up on ice for a short warm up again while the previous teams scores were announced. And this includes the moment I think nobody has caught on camera (I don’t think I have seen any pre-sd videos at all which is such a shame). They were just gliding on ice separately with Tessa slightly in front of Scott. Then they started to slow down because they were coming to Marie France. And while they’re slowing down, Scott skates right in front of me with the biggest grin ever and his lovey-dovey eyes focused on Tessa’s back slightly in front of him. And that is the moment I calm down. His eyes bring the sense to me that everything is going to be okay and he is confident about it (i swear to god he’s a magician or whatever but that look was SO calming and surreal). And Tessa just turns her head, looks at his face and literally rolls her eyes with a smile on her face (okay i might’ve imagined the eye rolling but you all know that face when tessa looks at scott and thinks ‘god you’re such an idiot i love you’) and then they’re already with Marie France with last words before performance. The actual performance was unreal. They did their beginning moves right in front of me and that was SO sharp. Also when they did these moves there were quite few “eeeaaaww” kind of shouts or whatever the Michael Jackson kind of short screams sound. That was superb and I’m so sad NONE of them are audible during the actual recording. It gave a great atmosphere. Scott did the kneeling thing right before the end of the first section right in front of me which left such an impact. SOO much control. The blues sequence was hella smooth (and twizzles were ok but i was so scared about them) BUT THE LIFT. THE STADIUM FREAKING ERUPTED DURING THE LIFT. I felt as if I had wings and had been accepted into paradise. And then it ended and I was on my feet and there was an ocean of tears (whoops😅). It was an experience I will never forget.

Then it was time for Group number 6. I have to be honest - I was a little disappointed with Stepanova/Bukin. I’ve been a huge fan of their SD but seeing it live was a little bit underwhelming. It’s the way of skating - they skate “small”. However I still loved the choreography and their chemistry is certainly the best in the younger ice dancers field. If they can improve their skating skills, I’m completely on board.

Piper and Paul were a huge surprise for me. Even when they were warming up with everyone else, you could feel their presence the most. And let me just say this - Canadian men are superior dancers. Scott, Paul and Andrew all felt a bit similar to me. They makes themselves look extremely confident (i mean their skating skills also are 😍) and they lead their ladies better than anyone else - it just feels extremely natural. So, back to Piper&Paul. This was a huge hit in the arena (and for me!). The feeling was great throughout the performance and I just want to say it one more time - the skating skills (piper has improved so much)!! the twizzles! they took my breath. I have to admit I didn’t think this dance would actually work for me but it did.

Another team which surprised me in a good way were Bobrova&Soloviev. As the season progressed, I always felt as this program was a little “pushed”. They tried to bring the sass, but instead it came off as a vulgarity. However the forms they create on ice are very clean and blade work is beautiful so I was actually scratching my head after watching these two because I’ve never really liked them but somehow they look better live (I just don’t understand why?)

I was also delighted by Anna&Luca’s performance. That dress looked even more beautiful live and they also made me like them more than on TV. They just draw you in and you can’t do anything about it. I just wish they would be more versatile (but i still love them!)

The seventh group started with the Shibs who I think had the very close second short dance choreography-and-idea-wise behind T&S. I’ve absolutely adored this dance all the times this season and this was no exception. That lift was badass and man, those twizzles… I didn’t think that was going to leave such a big impact on me. SO sharp in every movement. Alex just needs improve his facial expressions a bit and then they’d be even more perfect (also maia is a literal goddess).

I have to say my sentimental favorites of the night were Kaitlyn&Andrew. Their skating on TV looks a bit like Stepanova/Bukin’s so I was a little bit worried that it would fall flat. It was the DIRECT opposite. I think their skating skills were second only to VM that night because damn, they skated with so much speed. And their chemistry just went sky high. Also that lift made the arena erupt (again😂). It looked so much more powerful than on TV. The move where Andrew just rolls Kaitlyn on his back was hands down one of the coolest of the night. I was just so happy to see them perform the best they can after some disappointing starts. It was truly wonderful and after they finished I was standing and in tears again. I thought they were terribly underscored, but oh well, #twizzles. (they are both also incredibly hot 😏🔥)

Gabriella&Guillaume were also amazing live. I loved that they did the most program to the blues music which I truly respect because it is so much harder to keep an audience interested with blues than with hip hop. But the slow section was amazing - the attention to details and the blade work was soooo smooth. I’ve got to say although Guillaume’s skating skills and dance moves are through the roof fantastic, he doesn’t “lead” his partner that well - the Canadian guys do it so much better. I don’t think he has any rivals in the “best male ice dancer by himself” category, but he has a lot to learn to be the best in the “best male partner in ice dance” nomination - he isn’t the full package yet. However I’m a big fan of hard work and dedication (and I’m sad people only appreciate Guillaume’s because he is the more gifted one) so I’m a big fan of Gabi, her personality and facial expressions during the performance. She sells everything better than Guillaume but I don’t think she’s being recognized enough for that.

Madi&Zach also surprised me live by looking far more polished than on TV. The movements were sharp and they’ve got this weirdly different blade quality compared to others that I can’t explain (but i liked it). I certainly was a bit cringey about the music at the beginning of the season, but I’ve got to say that crowd really appreciated it and I was also on board. I smiled so hard when the scores came up because I absolutely love it when underdogs show everyone what they’re capable of.

Last up were Madi&Evan and this unfortunately turned out the same way I felt about Stepanova/Bukin. I had also been a big fan of this SD all season but their way of skating didn’t seem to impress me. I had also liked how Evan just tossed around Madi various times in the program but live it just seemed a little too much? BUT I totally respect that they have worked so much with their chemistry because it was nonexistent some years ago but now they just scream the word “FIIIIREEEEEE”. 😉

Afterwards there were about a hundred of people making a crowd close to the door which skaters entered to go to the draw for the FD. Well, I think it’s not a very good way to get a skaters autograph. They are very tired after the competition and it’s not even over - there’s still the FD so they got to keep focused. I think a moment between a skater and a fan should be much more personal than just blocking an entrance just to get your autograph. I don’t know, it just made me a little uncomfortable when everyone was waiting for them just to come like they’re some sort of zoo animals or whatever. I didn’t want any autographs or anything, it was just SO hard to get through the far-too-excited crowd (to the exit of the arena) I decided to wait until they go away. I didn’t even register that I was standing right after the entrance to the draw (where it wasn’t crowded at all, in fact I was like the only person there) and the wall was from glass so you could see the skaters after they entered the “closed zone”. And then I turned my head and saw FREAKING TESSA AND SCOTT in the closed zone. About a meter from me there was this crazy crowd waiting for skaters and turning their heads in the other direction while I was enjoying my view of Tessa and Scott having a conversation. 😄 They were kind of afar from me though and I was trying my best not to stare ('they are not animals and it is rude to do that’ I muttered to myself) - I don’t think they even saw me because they looked completely in ease as the glass wall separated them from everyone. Then they left further for the draw and I couldn’t see them anymore. Tessa&Scott were already in the closed zone because they skated early but the skaters from the last group still had to come. I’ve got to say it was a bit sad to see the guards having a hard time taking the skaters from the crowd to the closed zone. People went crazy every time someone came. But I, still not accompanied by anyone, just had the best view of my life of skaters like Maia&Alex, Kaitlyn&Andrew, Gabi (Guillaume didn’t show up because he was getting his hand stitched) , Piper&Paul, Madi&Evan and Madi&Zach after they had gone through the crowd. Madison Hubbell actually turned around to see the crowd once again, laughed, then turned in the other direction, saw me all by myself, smiled and waved at me! 😎😱 I was so surprised but also very thankful for such a nice gesture! (jeez, but I hope I didn’t look like those weird, creepy stalkers 😁). The crowd finally went away and I got to walk out normally.

My journey was over but the memories were never going to fade. It was an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world as it brought the whole spectrum of emotions to me. It was the best day of my life. I can never thank enough to my mom who came up with this idea and travelled with me. We had the most fantastic time ever. ❤️

(thanks for reading, this was suuuuper long 😂)

Preference #23: Festivals

Nate: You couldn’t help but to admire Nate do his thing up on stage. He was always so passionate about his music and watching him perform in front hundreds of people was amazing. The starting sounds of “Take A Puff” started to play and you watched Nate light up and took a hit of a blunt at the lyrics: Roll it up, light up, take a puff. The crowd started to cheer as he kept rapping and you began to dance along to the music. You could remember the exact day Nate was told he’d be performing at the festival. Ever since then he’s been figuring out which songs he’ll be doing and raving on over how excited he was. Now that the time has come you could tell Nate was meant to do this.

Sammy: Sam’s arm draped around your shoulder and you smiled as the two of you posed for a picture. Before the picture could even be taken you felt Sam’s tongue land on your cheek. “EW!” you exclaimed, moving away from him. His laughter rang out around the terrace and you pushed him in the side. “Aw you love me,” Sam said, grabbing his phone from Dillon to look at the picture. “Come on before we miss Lorde’s set,” you said, grabbing his wrist and yanking him out. The whole gang was at Coachella and you were excited to see all the artists performing this year.

Johnson: Jack stared at the food in your hands and you could practically see the drool falling from his mouth. “Do you want some?” you asked, he looked at you dazed, but still nodded his head. Jack had a weak spot for when it came to food from a food truck. He claims they make the best food ever. You handed over the small tray full of food and grabbed your water bottle. Today had to be one of the hottest days during the festival and the heat from everyone else wasn’t helping. “Mac Miller is going to perform soon, we should start heading over to his stage,” Jack said through a mouthful of fried pickles. You nodded at his words, noticing that he’s already eaten half your food. “Yeah just let me get something else to eat,” you chuckled, nodding your head down to the plate you just handed him. Jack gave you a sheepish smile and mumbled an apology for eating all your food.

Gilinsky: “Oooo look at my girl looking fresh,” Jack said, making a video for Instagram. You smiled at the camera and your attention went back to Wiz Khalifa, who was on stage performing. You and Jack had flew out to Chicago to attend Lollapalooza. You had always wanted to go and as an early birthday present Jack bought you tickets. “Happy birthday to this one! If you’re out here at Lolla come search for us!” he last said, posting the video up Instagram. You shook your head at his last words, knowing good and well that his fans would take up the challenge. “I hope you’re ready for a crazy day,” you shouted over the crowd, giving him a smile. Your boyfriend was insane, but you knew he enjoyed meeting is fans.

Swazz: “You know I don’t really do music festivals,” you shouted loud enough for John to hear. “Concerts I’m down for, but festivals nah.” John had a tight grip on your wrist and you were practically running to keep up with his fast steps. “Why not? Festivals are fun,” he questioned, eyes locked on the back of Tez’s head. “Because it’s like people have no home training…Look! Some girl is pissing in a bottle when there’s a port-a-potty less than ten feet away from her,” you grimaced. John had stopped abruptly and you ended up running into his back. “You got a point, but festivals are better because you get to see all your favorite artists perform in one spot,” he replied. That was a perk to it all, but being in a crowd of this many people made you feel claustrophobic, You were going to suck it up for now, only here because your boyfriend wanted to go.

Oh! Show report, before I forget

My…. last show report… for the first cast……. :(((((((((((((((((

SO: The day started off amazing, as I got to meet a whole bunch of people in real life for the first time. @ohscorbus @accio-hogwarts-a-history @mrsellacott and some other friends I’d met before. :D Although @inekepp and sat at the same table without realising who we were the entire time. 0_o

I was sitting outside Pret with MrsE and Sam Clemmett and Chris Jarman walked by us and went inside. Later on Jack Bennette came into pret when we were all chatting and he smiled and waved at us. :D

Then we went in the theatre and saw the cast board. LIke, it took us a few minutes to even read it, so secure were we in our assumptions that all the cast would be on. And when I saw that Anthony was out, I kind of went into shock. As I’ve said a bunch of times previously, Anthony is my Scorpius and probably 30% of my pleasure in watching the show comes from watching him specifically. (Another 30% goes/went to Jamie, and the rest for everything else about the show.) This is no reflection on James or her performance. She’s ever bit Anthony’s equal as far as acting and making Scorpius her own. I just really love Anthony. And realising that I wasn’t going to get to see him one final time in combination with hoping he was okay was devastating. I don’t feel bad about feeling that way.

You’re not that talented enough, how ‘bout you practice more?

Why do you keep on making mistakes? Ugh, again!

Let’s take a break and do your part later, Minhyuk. Kihyun, you’re up.

How about we give this show to Jooheon instead of Minhyuk?

These are the things that Minhyuk’s been feeding off. Curling up on the corner of the room, it’s been twelve hours since Minhyuk showed his face to the boys.

The sound of a phone buzzing echoed through the wall of the dark room. A dozen of missed calls and texts were ignored.

Minhyuk has never been so down ever since he’s debuted. The thought of the boys’ skills going up and up burdened him.

Being constantly compared to the others lowered Minhyuk’s confidence and he’s never been pressured in his entire life.

All he can ever think about is just to run away and never show his face. Pulling his knees up to his chest, he shakily takes a deep breath and stare blankly at the wall. Tears were threatening to fall.

The silence was already eating him up but he was too slumped to cheer himself up. Slowly, the tears were already falling one by one until he burst out in a soft fit of sobbing.

It was finally the end of your night shift and you finally got your day off. Making your way to the apartment where you and Minhyuk shared, you punched the pin to your apartment and pushed the door open.

You called out but you received no response. Weird, you thought as you close the door with your feet whilst cocking your head to the side. Removing your shoes and placing it on the shoe rack, you waltz your way to your room to see what Minhyuk was doing.

Wrapping your fingers around the doorknob, you hesitated for a bit but pushed it open, only to be greeted by soft sobs.

“Minhyuk?” you called out once more.

There was no response once again but you still made your way to the room, only to see a curled up Minhyuk. You immediately dropped your bag on the floor as you went to his side right away.

“O-oppa, what wrong?” Minhyuk immediately wiped his tears away and flashed you a convincing smile.

“Oh, you’re home?”

As much as Minhyuk tried to cover all of his problems with a cheerful facade, you were still able to read him like an open book.

“What’s wrong?” Ignoring his question, you held his hand and looked at him straight in the eyes.

“What do you mean? Aigoo, babe, do you want to have some snacks?” Minhyuk did his best to convince you. He does not want you to know.

To know how much he’s hurting and how he’s already on the verge of breaking down. The thought of him breaking down into fits of tears in front of you scared him. What if you’d leave him for being weak in front of you?

His mind was filled with what ifs and negativity. “C’mon, let’s go drink some hot choco–” Minhyuk was startled when you wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight hug without uttering a single word. Minhyuk froze in his spot, unable to process what’s happening.

Minhyuk’s mind just went blank and before he knew it, he was already falling apart. Burying his face on the crook of your neck, he sobbed.

“I-…. I don’t know anymore, [y/n].” He said in between sobs. Rubbing the small of his back, you just stayed quiet and listened to everything he has to say.

“T-the boys have good vocals…. a-and here I am…. I’m not even up to their level..” His voice trailed off as his tears took over. He sobbed loudly and you could feel the inside of you break.

Seeing him like this break your heart. “A-and the producers aren’t even satisfied with my performance……”

Minhyuk continued to sob and you thought it’s finally time for you to speak up. “Babe, listen.” You took a deep breath and pulled away from the hug, placing both of your hands on his shoulders.

“You’re an amazing singer and all of your fans know that. You’re unique in your own ways, babe, and it does not mean that you’re not in their level as all of you have unique voices.”

You looked at Minhyuk and he wasn’t even looking straight at you. Tears continued to brim down his cheeks, making you tuck a finger on his chin. Lifting it up, he looked at you with sad eyes.

“Babe, you’re the best thing that has ever happened in my entire life and so what if the producers didn’t like your performance? Well, we can surprise the shit out of them with your skills.”

Minhyuk wasn’t convinced by what you just said but that didn’t stop you. Cupping his cheeks, you brought your face a bit more closer to his and smiled.

“Hey, don’t tell you’re going to give up? The Minhyuk that I know will never give up without a fight. Oppa, don’t give up. All of your fans love you for who you are and for your talents. Everyone knows how amazing and wonderful you are, okay?”

Finally, a smile crosses Minhyuk’s lips and you were glad to see that smile. Minhyuk was thankful to have a girlfriend like you, who would always be there to pull him together whenever he falls apart. “I really love that smile of yours, Minhyuk.” you softly cooed, making him smile widely.

“Thanks, babe.” Minhyuk softly said as he shyly stared at your eyes. “No worries, babe, I’ll always be here for you no matter what.” Minhyuk chuckled and held both of your hands tightly.

“I love you.” He whispered, before crashing his lips onto yours. “I love you too, babe.” You replied after pulling away from the kiss. “Hey, why don’t we go take a hot bath together to freshen up?” You suggested to which Minhyuk immediately accepted.

“Hey, [y/n].”

“I’m lucky to have you here in my life.”

There’s been quite a few bootlegs that impacted me, because a performer acted out the scenes of characters I love in a way that made me see new nuances in the writing of said characters, etc, but one of the single best bootlegs I have is this audio I got:

In the Heights (Broadway) − July 25, 2010: Corbin Bleu (Usnavi), Courtney Reed (u/s Vanessa), Janet Dacal (u/s Nina), Jon Rua (u/s Sonny), Bianca Marroquin (u/s Daniela), Gabrielle Ruiz (u/s Carla), Rick Negron (Kevin), Rickey Tripp (u/s Graffiti Pete), the rest is the Original Broadway Cast. Tracked.

This is the absolute fucking best, you have no idea.

Corbin is amazing as Usnavi. He plays the character so distinctly, a much more serious, grounded vibe to him, and his voice is deep and beautiful. An excellent Usnavi.

Courtney Reed, who I did not love as Carla, is an incredible Vanessa, she gives you exactly what you want in a Vanessa, all the grump and the assertive and the emotional side as well, really really strong performance.

Chris Jackson, in addition to that, was ON FIRE during that specific performance, this is the best I’ve ever heard him, you can hear in his voice how good his acting is, amazing.

Rick Negron is my favorite Kevin, he brings so much depth to the role, I love him.

Bianca Marroquin aka!!!! finally!!!!! a decent Daniela understudy!!!!! Does a superb job of portraying the goddess queen of el barrio!!!!!

so yeah this bootleg was just excellent surprise to the next, this is hands down my favorite non OBC performance

Pretty much everyone who covered entertainment in the last 15 years has at least one good story about American Idol. Here’s mine.

In 2009, though I’d recently left the staff of OUT, I was so obsessed with this obviously queer guy on Idol that I wrote maybe a dozen blog posts about Adam Lambert for the magazine’s culture blog I’d founded, Popnography.

Spoiler alert: He didn’t win. I almost forgot I was there in person for the finale; his loss to Kris Allen was both completely shocking and not at all surprising. I remember better how I stood outside a restaurant that night telling NPR’s Neda Ulaby why that season was still, on some level, a win for the community.

From the beginning of that Idol season, OUT also pursued an interview with him for the magazine—which finally happened more than four months later. (It was also the week before I got married. The music documentary show I’d left OUT to work on was about to premiere. I will never learn not to try to do everything at once.)

So we sat out on the balcony of the 19 Entertainment offices and talked about an hour. There was nothing I asked that he wasn’t seemingly eager to give his opinion on. That wasn’t really that surprising.

What had been surprising was the way his publicist pulled me aside before we started and cautioned against making the interview “too gay” or, he said, “you know, gay-gay.” It was as baffling then as it is now. I made note of that exchange when filing my story, and my editor wrote a rather angry letter in the issue about the whole mess.

Thousands (millions? it felt like millions) of Glamberts and basically every other professionally employed Idol blogger or commentator condemned OUT and said we were blaming Adam for not being gay enough and that we would probably ruin his career, etc., etc. A lot of angry open letters were written. (I also forgot about those, too, until I went poking through my gmail tonight to see if I could find the interview transcript.) Middle fingers were raised during live performances, pearl-clutching ensued. Time passed. Eventually the magazine and Adam kissed and made up and we all lived gaily ever after.

Here’s something I wrote that November of 2009, in response to all the back and forth:

I’ve seen such striking change in even the last two or three years of how comfortable industry gatekeepers and their clients are in handling such new territory. We’re witnessing a changing of the guard, and it’s bound to overlap a bit in the middle, creating these strange moments where we work with both proudly out stars and their reluctant handlers, sometimes at odds with each other even when they have the same ultimate goals. I’m sorry it happened like this, too. But I’m looking forward to Adam Lambert having a long career, and to him proving every single one of us wrong in one way or another.

On Saturday my wife and I saw one of the last nights of Adam’s stateside tour, which was hands down one of the best, most entertaining and well-staged concerts I’ve ever seen. I spent most of it just leaning over the balcony, staring, smiling, impressed, swept away.

Last year Adam made more money than any other Idol alum, period, beating Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson. That’s largely thanks to his long stint fronting Queen in a worldwide run, and if it means he gets to spend the rest of his career making exactly the music he wants and performing it exactly how he enjoys, I think we all win.

Anyway: if you’ve got that funny Idol nostalgia feeling, you can read my whole long, barely edited interview with Adam from the glory days of 2009 right here

I’m not gonna stop singing and performing
I’m just never gonna stop like it feels so fucking extraordinary to be immersing people in music that speaks to them in some way

I was going to just write a drabble but it ended up being four chapters. I think I’m going to write more chapters and they may be NSFW. (Most likely)

First a Fiascle, Then A Surprise

You and Sam have been together for five years now, three of those you have been married. They have been the most wonderful five years of your life. Growing up you never had much of a family but Sam, your brother and sister in-law, and Sully have more than made up for it. Elena is the big sister you always wanted while Nate teases you as if you were his sister. Sully was like the father you never had. Always protecting you and making sure no man “got too close to his little girl”. He may have given Sam a few talking’s to due to his past flirtatious behaviour towards women. He eventually caved when he saw how good Sam was to you and how happy you made each other. Sully was the one who was more than overjoyed when the two of you decided to get married. He even gave you away at your wedding.

Nate and Elena had the most beautiful baby girl named Cassie. She had blond hair and looked so much like her mother. She may only be three years old but she is starting to show that she has the same adventurous and mischievous personality as her father.
You and Sam had talk about children. You both loved them but they weren’t right for the lifestyle the two of you lived. Babies were a huge liability in the field and there is always the potential of either you or Sam being shot at, therefore, you two decided it was best to wait a little while. Which was fine with you since you were significantly younger than Sam and if the two of you did decide it was a good time, you would be okay.

But here you are, sitting on the bathroom floor, staring at the tiny, positive, pink line on the home pregnancy test. “Shit,” you mutter under your breath. Damn it Sam and his constant need to touch you and do it anywhere that you may be caught. Which means neither of you ever had protection with you. You really should have been better prepared.
Your mind raced with the possible ways that you were going to tell him. Would he be excited? Or would he be disappointed and not want the baby right now since you two are still adventuring? You groan in frustration and decide it would be best to wait and tell him when he comes home tonight.

your single dad blurbs are so amazing!you should do 4/4 single dads on tour w/ the kids!

Ashton absolutely loved having his daughter with him on tour. he would walk around backstage with her on his hip or shoulders, smiling as she tells him about what she did with one of the crew members while Ashton had a meeting. and during soundcheck Ashton would bring her up on the stage, placing her in his lap, helping her to play the drums before she runs over to uncle Calum, him placing her on his hip and giving her the mic to answer some of the fans’ questions. and everyone would just adore her, and she would love it when Michael did her curly hair in little ponytails or when he would braid it, while Luke always was up for some tea parties along with her stuffed animals, and Calum always sat down with her to draw and paint in the back of the bus during long rides. and after a really long day she would cuddle down against Ashton’s chest, exhausted from another day filled with so much fun.

and Michael yeah okay so the fans would literally adore his son, finding him the cutest kid ever. and he would be around four wearing those big, bright headphones to protect his little ears during a concert, sitting on the side of the stage in someone’s lap, watching his dad perform in awe. and he would literally be best friends with Calum, always wanting to sit in Calum’s lap during a movie, or always holding Calum’s hand when crossing the road, always wanting to sit next to Calum during lunch. and the boys would love him, because he’s just a little ball of sunshine with some weird rainbow hair - this one day he sat down and grabbed these markers, painting his hair in a million different colours, wanting to be exactly like his dad.

and so Calum’s son would be adorAbLE!!! the fans loved him, the band loved him, the crew loved him, everyone just adored him.
and Calum would dress him in little soccer jerseys and band shirts and he would style his hair and little hood would basic be the cutest thing ever, looking like a small version of his dad.
and he would love to play soccer with his dad and his band mates outside the tour bus and it would be so cute because the boys would always let him win or score a goal and the little giggle escaping baby hood’s mouth as he runs towards his dad would be too adorable, “daddy! I scored a goal on uncle Ashton, again!”
and at night Calum would have him sleeping in a bunk, Calum placed next to him with a guitar in his arms, playing the sweetest little lullaby to help his son fall asleep.

and then we have Luke ah oh my god we all know how adorable he and baby girl Hemmings would be. like she’d be the sweetest kid, always smiling big and clinging to her dad’s hand. Luke would love bringing her on tour, and would always make sure to bring her out in the world on days off. like he and the other boys would be sightseeing this new town they just arrived in, little hemmo on either Luke’s hip or someone else’s. and she would dress in all pink, looking nothing like her dark coloured dressed dad. and Luke would attempt to do her hair sometimes, brushing it softly before making little ponytails out of her blonde hair. and she would have the same big, blue eyes as her father, making all the girls “aaaww” as soon as she runs on stage towards daddy Luke, clinging to his leg as he softly chuckles, lifting her up and pressing a kiss to her dimpled cheek. and Luke and all the boys would literally always play with her, draw some drawings or dress up as princesses while being stuck in traffic. and it would happen quite a lot that the band shows up somewhere with fingernails painted in all different bright colours, and they would let her style their hair, chuckling as she happily applies something to their face.
and she would fall asleep in Luke’s bunk, slowly drifting off to sleep to the sound of Luke’s voice. and he would be exhausted from yet another day with his daughter, but he wouldn’t change it for the world, smiling as he softly strokes some of her wild hair away from her sleeping face.

Today was a good day in which:

  • I ended up buying the dance emote for Mccree and WE HAD AN ACTUAL DANCE PARTY IN SKIRMISH WITH THE ENEMY TEAM AND IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER (we had a teammate widowmaker at one point who just sat down and watched us, spamming “ooh la la” and “the performance is about to begin” jfdkslafjdl)
  • I had some bad and good rounds as the cowman in quickplay, but I did manage to score a PotG on one of my fave map. So close to getting a four man ult too, if only the enemy Tracer wasn’t just directly behind her teammate at that moment… ;w;
  • Hareno is the best noodle queen. Just saying. :y
  • After Hareno left, I tried my hand at 1v1, and to no one’s surprise……I sucked lol. But I did score the PotG only bc I managed to kill enemy Sombra without taking any damage. I knew they were gonna try and sneak up to hack me… e3e
  • 1v1 is both sad and funny on my end especially when it got to the Pharah part bc we both could not hit each other in midair and i managed to actually drag on until capture point was triggered
  • then had some fun relaxing time against the bots. Everyone was awesome. I met a cool Genji in skirmish as Hanzo and we watched each other’s backs and health. It was great.
