AI WEIWEI, Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, 1995, three gelatin silver prints, each 148 × 121 cm
I love art that makes you feel. I love art that makes you question yourself and your thoughts. My initial reaction to the destruction of a 2000 year old vase is abject horror. But when I look it this series of photos I have to question that reaction. Why must we preserve everything? Why do we place so much emphasis on a object that was likely forgotten for the last 1600 years? Is it okay to let some things go, in favor of the new? That vase, at one point, may have said something to someone. But these photos of it being destroyed say much more to many more people.
