Let The Cobbler Stick To His Last takes as its starting point a slippage between craft and craftiness or cunning. The latter, with its implied manipulation of materials or the situation to one’s own agenda, suggests that within the repurposed domestic aesthetics of the former something malevolent can be found. Featuring work by a number of artists from New Zealand and Australia, as well as the United States, the exhibition traces the parallel means by which disparate artists have arrived at the conclusion that, more than ever, objects circulate as vessels, symbolic carriers of meaning that carry traces of their makers.
