The echo of my feet crushes the reflection in the floor. Suddenly my steps feel like destruction before I’ve even dared to speak.

building a bed

of bathroom floors—

wash your eyes,

cradle the doors.

       sunless studies,

 dissections,

       a sob story (sorry scarring)
       always staring,

              always starring,

       cut me in my

       wake up,

 strawberry seams.

The problem was you had to keep choosing between one evil or another, and no matter what you chose, they sliced a little bit more off you, until there was nothing left. At the age of 25 most people were finished. A whole god-damned nation of assholes driving automobiles, eating, having babies, doing everything in the worst way possible, like voting for the presidential candidate who reminded them most of themselves.

Loneliness is something I’ve never been bothered with because I’ve always had this terrible itch for solitude. It’s being at a party, or at a stadium full of people cheering for something, that I might feel loneliness. I’ll quote Ibsen, “The strongest men are the most alone.”… You know the typical crowd, “Wow, it’s Friday night, what are you going to do? Just sit there?” Well, yeah. Because there’s nothing out there. It’s stupidity. Stupid people mingling with stupid people. Let them stupidify themselves. I’ve never been bothered with the need to rush out into the night. I hid in bars, because I didn’t want to hide in factories. That’s all. Sorry for all the millions, but I’ve never been lonely. I like myself. I’m the best form of entertainment I have. Let’s drink more wine!

Bukowski Friday is Almost Here

Ready to wind down at the end of the week? So are we. This Friday we’ll be giving you non-stop Bukowski quotes to help you drown your sorrows with… well… more sorrows. Let’s face it, Bukowski wasn’t really a cheery guy.

Beginning at 12 midnight we’ll be delivering quotes from the master poet himself, every hour on the hour. If you have any favorite Charles Bukowski quotes you’d like to see published, by all means, send them to our submit box and if we like them too then they’ll be posted to the site.

It’s just like Bukowski always said, “Show me a man who lives alone and has a perpetually clean kitchen, and 8 times out of 9 I’ll show you a man with detestable spiritual qualities.” …or something like that.
