Anyway I hope you all enjoy this fluffy oneshot!

Leaning back against a hay bale, legs stretched out before her and hands cradling an untouched cup of sake in her lap, Kagome smiled as she watched the villagers laugh and dance merrily around the large fire, their own sakazuki* cups filled with the rice wine held aloft in their hands and sloshing over the rim from frequent stumbling. The village headman’s daughter had just gotten married that evening and the celebration was in full swing, the music festive and loud, the food delicious, and the sake plentiful.

Sango and Miroku, supporting each other with arms around the shoulders while trying and failing to stifle their giggles, stumbled into view and Kagome’s smile widened. Haven gotten married themselves only three months prior, the couple were still in newly wedded bliss, often sneaking away for some alone time and coming back always looking flushed and disheveled but happy and if possible even deeper in love. Kagome was truly happy for them, if not a little envious.

Flushed prettily, though Kagome wasn’t’ sure if it was from the sake or other activities, Sango spotted the young woman and beamed at her, waving very animatedly and almost cold clocking her husband in the process. Miroku grunted and over compensated when he leaned away; Sango gasped as she was suddenly jerked forward and she erupted into more giggles as she crashed into Miroku and caused them to do some fancy footwork in order to stay on their feet. Miroku’s husky chuckles punctuated Sango’s giggles and he grinned at Kagome before snagging his wife around the waist and promptly swinging her into a lively dance that was completely at odds with the music. Sango didn’t care; laughing, she beamed at her husband and wrapped her arms around his neck as he led them away around the fire.

“I love my city slicker boyfriend.”

Gabriel made a face, squinted at Jack from behind his sunglasses. “What are you talking about?” he asked. Jack laughed.

“Gabe, you’re wearing aviators and biker boots.”

“And?”

Jack laughed again. Grabbed at his stomach a little in the action. Gabriel narrowed his eyes further, brows furrowed, and watched as Jack fought to recover and went digging in the pile of shoes next to the bench he was sitting on. Finding what he was hunting for he dropped the pair of boots in front of Gabriel’s feet. Over-sized rubber boots with a thick coating of mud.

“Put these on, dork.”

“Whose are those?” Gabriel asked, sticking out his foot and poking one of them with the toe of his boot. “Because I am not wearing anything your shitty cousins put on their bodies, Jack.”

Jack snorted. “They’re my spares, sunshine. You stick your feet damn near up my ass every night it drops under 75, you’ll live.”

Bees. Why did it have to be bees? Why couldn’t Beorn gather, oh, I don’t know, giant butterflies? Why bees? And gigantic, horrifying, vermin-sized bees at that.

You sat at the over-sized table that morning, surrounded by your comrades, entirely unable to enjoy the welcome comfort of the skin-changer’s home. Every bit of you was on high alert, twitchy, uncertain and prepared to lash out if necessary. As such, you barely touched your food and tuned out conversation to keep the enemy firmly in the corners of your vision. Though in flight, the insects seemed to lumber through the room, the buzzing a touch deeper and far more ominous than what you were used to.

Book One: Throbbing Youth

Chapter 114: A Strange Phone Call

That afternoon, Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin returned home for lunch. They played affectionately with A Lang for some time before resting during the remaining of the afternoon. When the evening arrived, they quickly rushed back to their apartment since Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu wanted to come over and celebrate Christmas with them.

Originally they had planned to eat out, but Gu Hai kept on bragging about how extraordinary his culinary skills were. The two friends were quite surprised, but without any objections, they made a beeline into the apartment.

On the road, Gu Hai was a little anxious, “What should we eat tonight uh?”

“Hot pot with sliced lamb meat.”

“You want to eat that?”

Bai Luo Yin bellowed out, “It’s the only food that won’t betray your cooking skill.”

Gu Hai suddenly felt a rush of embarrassment crept onto his face. His pitch-black pupils stared at Bai Luo Yin: “You’re saying, the food I make isn’t good?”

“Good or not, you never thought about it?”

Gu Hai suddenly choked, his hand immediately shot towards Bai Luo Yin’s neck and grasped it. He angrily asked: “The eggs I boil are not good?”

“Why don’t you ask whether the water you heat up is good for drinking or not?”

        “You fucking…”

Gu Hai bitterly took his hands away from Bai Luo Yin’s neck. His face darkened as he maintained a good meter away from Bai Luo Yin.

        Oh? Already lost his temper?

Bai Luo Yin lightly coughed to which Gu Hai did not react to. His expression was awfully serious as he clenched his teeth and looked ahead. Two endless dark orbs displayed clearly, its’ owner’s emotion were indistinguishable.

“You’re still angry ah?” Bai Luo Yin couldn’t help but open his mouth, “Thin-skin.*”

At first Gu Hai was still angry but Bai Luo Yin’s statement, “thin-skin,” really cheapened his honor. This time, not only was he already a meter away, he immediately faced forward and took off. Gu Hai’s stern figured moved further into the distance and out of Bai Luo Yin’s sight.

This person… Bai Luo Yin had no other choice, he quickened his pace, and chased after.

“Okay, the food you make isn’t that hard to eat, you still have time to improve your skills.”

Gu Hai still didn’t say anything.

“Don’t be so persistent. I’m only giving you a suggestion. It’s only to help you improve!”

Gu Hai still had a dark expression as he continued to walk ahead.

Bai Luo Yin kicked Gu Hai’s buttock.

        “Are you looking for trouble?”

Gu Hai’s face remained the same.

Bai Luo Yin continued to threaten him, “If you’re still so fucking stubborn, believe it or not, I’m going to tell Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu about your original creation, that penis flavored meat*…?” [refer to note]

The corner of Gu Hai’s mouth twitched. He roughly pulled Bai Luo Yin into a tight embrace and pointed at his nose. With humor, he cursed: “You fucking bastard, you’re so bad.”

As expected, to deal with these kind of people, you must use some vulgar* words, otherwise, you can’t uncover their thin skin.

The two went to the supermarket, bought several kilograms of freshly sliced mutton meat, along with ingredients for hot pot. They chose whatever vegetables they wanted and then headed back home.

When Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu arrived, the water in the hot pot had already boiled, the smell from the kitchen sneakily spread into the rooms. In their own home, Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu are both young masters; don’t even mention making food, they’ve never even touched the kitchen utensils before. This time, just from taking a swift of the aroma, they immediately patted Gu Hai’s shoulder, praising him: “Gu Hai, you’re too awesome and very capable. My respect for you has gone up to another level.”

Zhou Shi Hu who was also on the side, parroted Li Shuo’s words, “It’s true, two years ago who would have thought that Gu Hai can cook?”

“Yes yes yes, it’s fucking unexpected alright. I didn’t eat breakfast or lunch just so I can eat this!”

“I even brought a camera with me.”

Bai Luo Yin looked at Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu’s face as they continued to admire and flatter Gu Hai. Bai Luo Yin couldn’t help but to blush with shame. No wonder Gu Hai was so confident and proud.

They all drank and ate at the same time. As expected, it was very gratifying to drink beer in the winter. Li Shuo explicitly brought two bottles of maitai from his home. Once the liquor entered their stomach, their faces were all flushed causing them to talk even more.

“It can’t be! You…you’re…that Jiang…Jiang something…her son?” Li Shuo’s hand fiercely slammed onto the table, causing the soup from the hot pot and the beer to splash.

Zhou Shi Hu was also shocked, “After making such a ruckus for half the day, you two are actually brothers?”

Bai Luo Yin didn’t say anything, Gu Hai asked him, “Do you want more condiments?”

        “I can do it myself.”

Bai Luo Yin started to move his hands, but Gu Hai had already taken his bowl. He added half a spoon of meat, some soup, tasted it to see if it was too salty or not, before nodding his head.

        “That will do.”

Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu stared in awe before they started to crack some jokes. “This big brother is quite responsible.”

Bai Luo Yin quickly looked up toward the two guys, and hurriedly declared, “I’m older.”

        “Eee…”

Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu were dumbfounded for a moment, then suddenly burst out laughing.

Gu Hai knew what they were laughing about, a pair of chopstick went flying toward them and whacked someone’s head. His eyes were quite serious.

        “What are you laughing about?”

Li Shuo was absolutely pleased in Gu Hai’s misfortune*, “Da Hai ah Da Hai, who’d thought that this day would come for you too, you bastard! How does it taste to have someone step on your head? It doesn’t feel good right?”

“Get the fuck away!” Gu Hai kicked Li Shuo’s leg.

Li Shuo coldly laughed, “You only know how to be cruel to me. If you’re so capable, scold your brother.” [scold/curse/blame]

“Why should I curse at him?” said Gu Hai ominously.

Li Shuo kept on provoking him, “Scold him ah.”

From the side, Zhou Shi Hu also roared, “Yeah! Scold him if you dare!”

Gu Hai turned to look at Bai Luo Yin. The latter was thoroughly enjoying his food; it was as if he wasn’t even there. Actually, cursing here while drinking wasn’t anything serious to rack one’s mind over. Didn’t they normally curse here and there when they joked anyways? But why was he unable to say anything now? Watching Bai Luo Yin sitting there so sincere, eating so well and being so well-behaved, who would be willing to curse at him ah?

There’s no other choice but to be the grandson!*

This was the first time that Gu Hai lowered his pride and respect to anyone in front of his friends. Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu allowed their saliva to flow out.

Zhou Shi Hu drank until his lips were tired; he tugged at Bai Luo Yin’s hand and said: “I really admire you for being able to subdue Gu Hai. You don’t know how many bad words he said about you.”

Bai Luo Yin felt just a bit more honored.

He looked at Zhou Shi Hu, interested, “What bad things did he say about me?”

Gu Hai gave Zhou Shi Li a death glare, “Don’t you dare say it.”

        “Say it.”

Those words, from Bai Luo Yin’s lips, were clear cut.

After Zhou Shi Li finished eating Bai Luo Yin’s food, he pulled Bai Luo Yin to sit on the side of the sofa. Zhou Shi Hu dug out everything and told Bai Luo Yin how Gu Hai had slandered and tarnished his character. He exaggerated the story at random to make it more interesting. Bai Luo Yin took it all as a joke and didn’t take any of it to heart. He listened and listened until he couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore, and then, he couldn’t remember anything at all.

When Bai Luo Yin woke up again, it was already early in the morning: 300AM. He was woken up by his cellphone ring tone going off. Only after being fully awake, he realized he had been sleeping on the sofa. Gu Hai was even more hideous. He was laying directly across the carpet, still silently asleep. Bai Luo Yin didn’t know when Li Shuo and Zhou Shi Hu left. Both the kitchen and living room were in complete mess.

The cellphone kept on ringing and Bai Luo Yin’s was still a bit dizzy. He leaned against the wall for support and made his way to the bedroom. Finally, he found the phone ringing.

A strange number……who would call at this time?

Bai Luo Yin pressed the green icon and listened; he lazily asked, ‘hello’.

The other person didn’t answer, not even a sound could be heard.

        “Hello?”

        Bai Luo Yin’s brows furrowed.

        “Bai Luo Yin.”

These three words, like a heavy boulder, smashed onto Bai Luo Yin’s head and it smashed on him until he was sober.

        “Shi Hui?”

A slight sob was heard from the other side, but was quickly suppressed. Afterwards it was quiet for a while.

Bai Luo Yin felt very perturbed. [his mind was in a complete mess].

“How do you know my phone number?”

The person seemed to ignore Bai Luo Yin’s words, minding their business and said, “Last year today, we spent it together. This year, it’s only me. Do you know? It’s very lively on the streets, they all have someone beside them, but it’s only me, walking alone on a strange street thinking of you. What I say isn’t wrong right? Do you miss me? Perhaps, long ago, you already have someone beside you accompanying you, ke ke ke……”

Bai Luo Yin composed himself, “Shi Hui, don’t be like that, we’re already over.”

“I know, I’ve already accepted that reality, it’s just today is special. It’s just so lively and festive here, I couldn’t control my emotions. I never thought of getting back together with you again, I…I only want to tell you, I especially miss you, really really miss you, I think, I’m unable to walk out of those memories.”

Bai Luo Yin walked toward the balcony and leaned against the cold wall. He forced himself to calm down.

“The longer you are like this, the longer you won’t be able to come out of it. Don’t ask about me. Try to delete my number, delete every messages that have to do about me, delete me.”

“I’m unable to do that.” Shi Hui’s voice, gently, choked up with sobs, “Do you know? The reason why I am able to make it this far, is because, I’ve always imagine that, inevitably, we will be good again.”

Bai Luo Yin’s fingertips floated in the chilly air, the night’s wind blew against his breathe, making it unsteady.

        “It’s impossible.” [没可能了]

After these four words, Bai Luo Yin took a deep breath and hung up the phone.

Luke 2:7 (NKJV)

The day she told him she was with child, one that could not be his, everything changed. How he wrestled with this news… This girl was trustworthy, honest, pure… The news was so shockingly unexpected, he hardly knew what to do with himself… Until the Angel appeared in a dream… and that sent his world into another spin…

An uncomplicated man of integrity, whose hands showed his love for hard work, a direct decedent of David, of Abraham, a decent, law abiding, synagogue attending man who had dreamed of marrying a lovely uncomplicated woman, living in Nazareth, having children whom he could pass the family business onto… this man decided to heed the voice of an angel, and stay betrothed to a woman who was a carrying a child she claimed to be God’s…

It had been an incredible few months.

The night before last, he knew the baby was coming… She was tired, apprehensive, excited… he was falling in love with her, her pure faith and undeterred heart… She needed a place to rest as quickly as possible and with the coming census, the village was flooded with people. He went first to His families home… full. Then the neighbours house… again, full.

He ran from door to door, knocking, pleading, and at last begging… Her cries grew louder, adrenaline kicked in and he frantically searched for a room, any room, any safe place for a woman to deliver a child…

Finally, the downstairs stable of a humble family home… they would share it livestock, but none of that mattered… he didn’t notice the smell of manure, the scratch of hay upon his legs…

He pulled his betrothed from her mount and lay her in the straw as the grip of birth beat heavily through her body. All he could do was watch, breathe… wait…

Then, silence.

In his mind right now, the night before, the months before, did not exist…

All he had was this moment and the perfect tiny gift that had just been violently and tremendously released from its mother’s womb and now lay squirming and bloody in his hands.

His newborn son, breathing his first breath. The world hearing his voice for the first time as a tiny, strong cry.

His son, who was not his son, but completely his son.

As tears of love began to flow down his face, Joseph leaned his head down to touch the temple of his miracle child and breathed his name onto his cheeks…

“Jesus”

She didn’t even glance over at him before she stood up, brushing hay off of her leggings and pulling her hood up. “‘ey,” she simply said. “… remember I exist now, do ye?”

Well that wasn’t what he was expecting. “How could I forget you? You know, my best friend?” Hiccup frowned and began walking closer to her, his eyes scanning her over—she was rigid, her movements calculated and forced, her back tense. “When you stopped texting me, I got worried…”
