It is a queer thing having legs and walking among men. Beneath the ocean, within the oceans arms arms, everything is cool. The sun’s touch is distant and ligter than a whisper, but here there is only heat. Heat during the days and heat during the nights and heat when Jon touches her.
The heat that Jon creates is the only heat that she desires or misses when she returns back to the oceans embrace. Jon is the only thing she ever misses now days, he and their babes. The feeling doesn’t even go away when she returns to the ocean’s cool embrace and her home of salt. She doesn’t ever truly feel connected or anchored until she us once more in his arms. It scares her sometimes, the sharpness of her yearning and her fierce desire for him. It is as if he’s cast some strange and ghastly enchantment over her, as if she’s not truly herself until they are reunited.
She is a daughter of Neptune, beloved and precious. She’s not meant for this, this mothering and loving and existing in a world dictated by reason and sense. She is meant for the froth of sea in her mouth and salt and rage. She is meant for dark caves and mystery and strange songs. She always seems to forget this every time she lays eyes on him. Jon’s eyes and smiles and his person are familiar and beloved to her. His eyes are the grey of a mournful sea, gentle and sad and kind all at once. All her fears seem to fade away and fall into a hush when she looks at him or feels the weight of his hand upon at her or at the face of his quiet love, passionate, scorching and gentle all at once. It is the gentle lilt of his words and his bare skin against her, it is all this and more that loosens the tight fist of fear around her lungs. It is all this and more that makes her forget.
It is impossible to forget for long though. She sees how time slowly creeps upon them. Jon had promised her that they had all the time they wanted when she had asked what time truly was. She knows that is not true now. She understands the invisible force and it’s imminent power now. She knows this and still she wants all of time for her and Jon. She wants the end of the world and a beginning of another one. She wants the burn of stars. She wants the raging seas. She wants to see all of this with Jon but that is not the way of man. Men do not live for long. She is a child of the sea but it is truly mankind that are the children. Their paths and lives extend as far as the gentle tide on sand.
That is the truth of it and she knows that and yet her heart aches when she sees how grey is interspersed with the dark of his hair and beard. There are lines on his face that were never previously there and at times he seems so much smaller while the babes that she nursed are bigger than even her. It hurts to see him edging closer and closer into a journey that she will not be able to follow him into. She had gone into their marriage thinking that they had more than enough time. She had been wrong. It was not enough. She wants more. More smiles and more laughter. More nights of heat and flushed bare skin. More babes. More of him.
She wonders what she will do when Jon makes his last voyage into a place made to be forever unknowable and unreachable. She wonders if she will spend the rest of her years, lost in her grief or if she will rage. Rage at the sea and world both. The answer comes as quickly and easily as it always does. She will set sail on all Seven of the unknown and strange seas. She will set sail in the heavens and stars if must be. She won’t stop until she is reunited with him and if death was barred from her, then she wouldn’t stop breaking and recreating time and changing it to her rules until all had heard her pleas and given her eternity with Jon. She would not let even death split her and Jon.
MY CHILD NEEDS MORE LOVE SO HERE I AM, WRITING FIFTY REASONS TO LOVE NICO.
Note: These are not in any order, the reasons are all random, also there will be spoilers and cursing.
1. LITTLE NICO IS SO CUTE. He protects his sister, “Don’t talk to my sister that way!” Plus he’s super nerdy and obsessed with mythomagic and pirates, HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HIM?!
2. “You said you would protect her” Do really need to explain?
3. He’s so fucking powerful, but doesn’t use his powers for bad, or to show off (unlike some other demigods I know).
4. HE BROUGHT A WHOLE FUCKING SKELETON ARMY TO HELP IN THE IN THE TITAN WAR.
5. He discovered Camp Jupiter before anyone else.
6. He pretends not to know Percy, which must have been extremely hard for him to do, just to make sure that he doesn’t accidentally mess up the quest.
7. HE FOUND HAZEL IN ASPHODEL AND GAVE HER A NEW LIFE. WITHOUT NICO HAZEL WOULD STILL BE IN ASPHODEL.
8. His grammar is AMAZING.
9. He is so freaking polite.
10. At age fourteen, after already being in so much pain, he jumped into Tartarus. HE FUCKING JUMPED INTO TARTARUS. I REPEAT, HE FUCKING JUMPED INTO TARTARUS. HE JUMPED IN BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO HAVE TO GO THOUGH PAIN TO CLOSE THE DOORS OF DEATH, SO HE WILLING DECIDED TO TAKE THE PAIN ONTO HIMSELF.
Plus, he saw Tartarus MUCH WORSE THAN PERCY AND ANNABETH, WAS BY HIMSELF, AND WAS ALREADY IN PAIN. AND HE JUMPED IN WILLINGLY. WILLINGLY.
11. According to the old myths, Ares, an immortal god at his full strength could barely survive being in the Bronze jar. NICO SURVIVED AT AGE 14 AFTER BEING TO FUCKING TARTARUS.
12. On top of everything, he had MORE PAIN ABOUT HIS FEELINGS FOR PERCY.
13. He’s gay, and it made me SO happy to FINALLY see an LGBTQ+ character in a kids book.
14. HE SHADOW TRAVELED A FUCKING FORTY FOOT TALL STATUE ACROSS THE WORLD.
15. HE IS STILL FIGHTING
16. Reynico and Jasico BROTP
17. SOLANGELO OTP. THIS SHIP IS BEAUTIFUL.
18. He is sane enough to continue to live, talk, and be pretty okay.
19. “I have a doctor’s note”
20. He has an awesome “Son of Hades” look
21. EVEN THOUGH HE HAS BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH PAIN HE STILL TRIES TO HELP PEOPLE. ANYONE BUT HIMSELF. HE ALMOST KILLED HIMSELF BY SHADOW TRAVELING SO MUCH, JUST TO HELP THE CAMPS.
22. Nico is an amazing name. So is di Angelo. It translates to Nico from the Angels, I think. Edit: Okay so apparently, according to the helpful @the-forgotten-traveller his name translates to Victory of the Angels or the Angel of Death, depending on where his first name was rooted from. (correct me if I’m wrong).
23. “With great power, comes great need to take a nap. Wake me up later”
24. He tries to comfort Reyna and defends her by killing that demigod roman asshole.
25. I’m pretty sure Will Solace had a crush on him.
26. “I’m a son of Hades, Jason. I might as well be covered in blood or sewage, the way people treat me.”
Despite that, he STILL HELPS THOSE PEOPLE TO POINT WHERE HE ALMOST KILLS HIMSELF HELPING PEOPLE WHO BARELY NOTICE HIM.
27. He speaks Italian.
28. He’s defends all of his sisters, Bianca, Hazel, and Reyna.
29. He’s sarcastic.
30. This line: “Not a word about the shirt. Not one word.”
31. He’s probably the most attractive 80-something year old ever.
32. He was THE FIRST DEMIGOD TO SURVIVE TARTARUS. EVER.
33. He listens to Techno Pop music.
34. He’s awesome at sword fighting.
35. He’s a classic “Looks like he could kill you but is actually a cinnamon roll”
36. He was the only one to talk to Hesita and Bob.
37. Nico talking to Bob was the only reason Bob helped Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus, and therefore Nico indirectly saved the entire world.
38. He’s the ghost king.
39. “Don’t call me Death Boy!”
40. “Significant annoyance, in your case.”
41. He’s can shadow travel.
42. He helped Apollo in ToA, even though the gods have been nothing but mean to him.
43. Fuck that. Not only did he help Apollo, he HELPED ALL HE GODS.
44. Hades is pretty cool.
45. Nico is so relatable.
46. He’s such an inspiration, I mean, he’s been though so much pain, and is still a hero.
47. He’s stronger than everyone else, because not only does he have to do normal DEMIGOD stuff, he also has SO MUCH PAIN.
48. He’s not stupid, quite the contrary actually. He’s extremely intelligent, AND he stopped going to school at age 10. Let me repeat that, HE STOPPED GOING TO SCHOOL AT AGE TEN. AND THE SCHOOL HE WENT TO WAS FROM THE 1930S.
49. HE IS PERFECT AND AMAZING AND GREAT. YOU CAN FIGHT ME ON THIS.
Long Island summers weren’t ever particularly bad, per say. Temperatures at camp usually hovered around low to mid 80’s, so it wasn’t ever totally miserable, or impossible to go outside.
Today, though, smack dab in the middle of July, the air was thick with humidity and the temperature had hit a record breaking 101 degrees. Activities went on as usual, though times were limited and there were water pitchers and coolers in every activity area. The climbing wall had been shut down, and most of the campers spent the day inside or in the shade.
While the classes in the sword fighting arena had all been cut short, 30 minute maximums with a quick water break every 10 minutes to insure everyone remained hydrated, Nico was teaching his fourth consecutive class. Some of the Apollo kids were doing rounds to insure that everyone was safe, but with the rules in place and the ridiculous amount of water jugs, everyone seemed to be fairing pretty well.
Will was on infirmary duty, and while he didn’t have a scheduled class, he sat in the shade somewhere across from where Nico was teaching. He’d come in sometime during the fourth lesson, unsuspecting of how long Nico had been in the sun.
The blond had been pretty preoccupied with his book, so he didn’t even notice how pale Nico had gotten until one of the campers shouted his name.
Glancing up and quickly setting the book aside, he frowned at the little girl, who looked at him then pointed at Nico. The son of Hades was sitting on the ground, his head between his knees, his sword abandoned at his side.
The healer shot the girl a reassuring smile, standing up and jogging to his boyfriend’s side. “Class dismissed- keep up with those fluids.” Will said, waving off the group of concerned campers and dropping to his knees once he reached Nico’s side. “Hey—are you alright?”
Nico gave a short nod, his eyes closed, his face ashen despite how badly he was sweating. Upon closer examination, Will found that Nico’s shirt was damp with sweat and that he trembled slightly with chills. “M'fine, just got lightheaded…” He croaked.
“Gods, Nico, how long have you been jn the sun?” Will asked incredulously. “Come on, you need to sit down in the shade. Can you stand?” His boyfriend just nodded, so with a firm hand under his elbow, Will helped him to his feet and watched, with only a little shock, as Nico bent over to vomit on the arena ground.
Sighing, Will held tight onto his shoulders, keeping him steady. “Just a little dizzy? Looks like heat exhaustion, to me, and dehydration.” He muttered, leading Nico off to where he’d been watching the class just a few minutes before. The son of Hades looked disoriented, but he followed Will’s moments, sitting without any fight.
Will wanted to make sure he was stable enough for the walk to the infirmary before they moved anywhere, so he coaxed Nico onto his back and stuck his medical bag under his feet so they were elevated slightly. “You should start feeling a bit better, but we need to get you inside and into the air conditioning.”
Nico mumbled a halfhearted thanks, eyes fluttering as Will laid his icy water bottle across his forehead. Rolling his eyes, Will chuckled.
“I can’t believe you.” Will teased, rolling up the hem of Nico’s shirt to expose his stomach and then fanning him with his hands. “You’ll cool off a bit soon. Drink some of the water.”
They sat there for only a few minutes, Will fanning Nico and doing his best to keep the son of Hades cool.
By the time they started their trek back to the infirmary, Nico at least had the energy to look sheepish about the piggy back ride Will insisted on giving him.
Heeeey! My friend Kirie recommended you're blog for starting to worship Hades! You are amazing and everything of the sorts and I love your blog! Now I have a small question... I want to make a spell jar for Hades as an offering/altar piece but I have no clue what his herbal correspondences would be... ~Moon Child
Wow that’s so nice! Thank you!!
Herbs that’ll work in a Hades jar: mint, pomegranate seeds, poppy seeds, yew, birch, poplar, cedar, rose, daisy, marigold, passionflower, lily, grain, olive, or dandelion. ( ^ ^ )
As a reference, any herb associated with death or Pluto would work.
Art + Fic because I’ve had this small fic sitting around in my drafts for awhile and felt like publishing it. Thanks to everyone who came to my stream!! Drawing this one was a lot of fun.
“Yeah, I uh…” Nico’s gaze was faraway, and he began to twist at the ring on his index finger. Nico sighed and looked away. “Forget it.”
Hazel stuck out her lower lip. “Nico, what’s been eating at you?” She murmured tenderly. Hazel took a step closer to her brother, and Nico shuffled his feet in response. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed you disappearing again.” She blinked slowly, not looking away from Nico’s dark, hollow eyes. He wouldn’t meet Hazel’s gaze. “C'mon, sit down at least.” She reached out and gave a little tug to Nico’s wrist.
They sat down at the base of a tree and gazed out at Camp Half-Blood’s morning-bustling troopers. They were far enough away, though, that they couldn’t hear more than an occasional pegasus whinny from the stables or giggle of the naiads in the nearby lake. Nico stayed quiet, and the two siblings sat in silence, listening to the stream.
Hazel shuffled through the river rocks at their feet and handed Nico a smooth, flat one that. “Here, watch me.”
Nico tossed his gaze over at Hazel, then at the rock before taking it from her hands. He followed Hazel’s lead when she threw the stone into the river, except Nico managed to skipped his three times.
“If there’s… Something you want to talk about, I’m all ears.” Hazel spoke quietly.
Playing Astraeus’s route with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and “Turning Tables” on repeat. Goddamn, I did not ask for these feels.
I’ve seen people dismiss Hades’s villainization here as lazy writing, and I beg to differ. You could see traces of this even in his own route, and elsewhere.
Remember Season 1, how dismissive Hades was of the titans’ plight? He didn’t even consider that they had a valid cause, in spite of their terrible methods. So does the MC, but keep in mind that she grew up learning that H.E.R.A. was right about everything. That the gods were to be revered. If they paint the titans as antagonistic, what other reason would she have to believe otherwise? Until Astraeus she had never met any for herself – and the “good ones” she does meet later on, she’s told are an exception to the rule.
But Hades has lived through it all. He was there when they sealed the titans’ fate. He has met their descendants. He knows what Tartarus is like, he knows that there are innocent children born there doomed to an eternity of darkness for no other reason than that they share the same blood as their parents. Does that bother him? Maybe. He certainly doesn’t come across as the heartless sort.
—-But still, he believes it best to stay on the safe side. As the gods have always done. So he continues to paint them all with the same brush.
Remember Season 2, how Hades responded to MC’s concerns about his – and the rest of the pantheon’s – attitude to humans? He keeps denying that he sees humans as inferior, yet his behavior throughout the season suggests otherwise. That humans are weak, inapt of judging for themselves; that the gods know better, and should decide what’s best for them without their input. Just like he does to MC.
And when MC keeps pushing him about the issue – that maybe he sees her the same way as Olympus perceives humans in general – he finally drops the bomb: that MC is not just a human. She’s special. Did he have ill intentions when he put it that way? Probably not. Hades is friendly with humans; he cooperates with them, and thinks fondly of them.
—-But still, he believes it best to stay on the safe side. As the gods have always done. Humans should be kept in the dark. MC should stick to the sidelines and be stowed away in a gilded cage for her safety, as long as she’s still (just a) human. Outwardly, if nothing else.
Remember how Hades responded to Hydra’s cooperation in Hydra’s Season 2 route, and H.E.R.A.’s involvement in Cerberus’s Season 2 route? Part of his initial antagonism and continued dismissiveness towards Hydra could be chalked down to Hydra’s own attitude, true, but he rejected his cooperation first and foremost on the grounds that he wasn’t part of H.E.R.A. In other words, not sanctioned by the gods themselves. Never mind the fact that Hydra had already signed a temporary joint contract with Cyprin, or that a field agent (MC) vouched for him. Never mind the fact that the godly monsters are on the frontlines for taking the consequences of whatever decisions Olympus make, good or bad, without being able to voice their opinions or otherwise partake in the progress. Unless the pantheon calls the final shots, no one gets to have a say.
And again, we see it with Cerberus. MC has no business getting involved with the goings-on with the underworld unless she’s the fiancée of its lord. Even when it falls under the jurisdiction of what H.E.R.A. normally deals with, Hades stubbornly insists on overtasking Cerberus and his brothers instead of letting other godly monsters fill in or allow MC help with the source of the problem. At least not until it becomes evident that it’s too much for him to deal with through his usual channels.
Is that because Hades is incompetent, or an irrational tyrant? Is he simply too emotional to make proper judgments in times of need? Definitely not. We know Hades as the cool-headed strategist among the Top Tier Gods. Most likely he saw the benefits of the alternate methods proposed.
—-But still, he believes it best to stay on the safe side. As the gods (or he alone) have always done. Because, at the end of the day, they know better. That’s their part as gods.
And so we arrive at Astraeus’ route, the alternate timeline in which he decides to cave to the rest of the pantheon and let Hera take MC’s place. Is it so surprising, really? Hades doesn’t want this, either. But this is what they’ve chosen, and he can’t deny them the right to overrule a single human’s desire. He tries, in the beginning. Tries to make MC see. This is the safe choice. This is how things have always been done. It might not make her happy right now, but she’ll see in the long run. Especially when she becomes one of them.
And when that fails, when MC rebels against the system and beliefs he has spent centuries helping to build, helping to maintain? When she goes to take refuge with the most unpredictable antagonist of them all, gambling the safety of them all in the process? He fights back. As he should. I get that Hades is the fandom bae, but let’s not pretend he’s perfect and infallible, incapable of making the wrong call even for the supposed love of his life. Because he isn’t. And honestly, I can’t blame him for it. Ideologies centuries in the making don’t fold so easily.
Doesn’t stop me from raging half the time while playing this route about how we could’ve had it all, though. And soaking in all the delicious angst the other half. And listening to this:
“Next time I’ll be braver / I’ll be my own savior / When the thunder calls for me…”
