( TRANS ) wonwoo’s japanese md pamphlet — february ‘17

my role in seventeen is ‘brains.’ i like books, be it mystery novels, historical novels, literature, poetry; i don’t choose based on genres. if there’s time, i’m always reading. after reading an emotional book, my tears don’t stop. i’m usually not the type to cry, but when i’m touched by a movie or book, my tears become a lot. recently, i read 3 of higashino keigo’s books. in korea, higashino keigo is very popular (his books). the one that left a deep impression on me was 'miracles of the namiya general store.’ it’s a story about communication between the past and the future via letters, it was very emotional.

my birthplace is changwon, gyeongsangnam-do. i can’t really remember much regarding kindergarten, but the thing that remained in my memory is a high slide. i often went to the nearby park with my friends, it was a very average childhood. in elementary school, i goodheartedly joked around and played with my friends. the most fun was after class, we would have a drawing battle on the blackboard. now that i think about it, it was comedic and cute. (laughs)

i liked playing with my friends, but i also liked doing stuff at home quietly, since then i often read books. in 1st grade someone bought me the whole set of the record of the three kingdoms, i read it multiple times. also, i liked solving quizzes on computer games.

i got into music in middle school. the rock band buzz was popular, so i got excited with my friends and said 'let’s try being a band too!’ and we learned how to play instruments together. i learned guitar, my friend learned drums. i had the vague dream of 'it would be good to have a concert in seoul someday,’ so i started going to a music academy. practicing dance with my friends, we even recieved an offer to stand on the stage of our middle school academy. i couldn’t dance well then, but it was a fun memory. (laughs)

at the suggestion of my teacher at the music academy, i went for an audition. i said to my friends, “if i have a dream to be an artiste, it’s definitely going to be a good experience,” i went to the audition with the purpose of gaining experinece, in the end i couldn’t believe i passed. so i came to seoul, and became a trainee from my 3rd year in middle school.

actually, before passing the audition, i thought 'when i grow up, i want to do music with my friends freely’ or 'i want to travel the world,’ there were a lot of things i had interest in, but i never thought about what i wanted to do for my future job. however, having passed the audition, i formed the goal of being a singer. my father is very happy and is supporting me for chasing my dream now. i’m always concerned about seventeen’s activities, so i search my name on the internet (laughs). my father looks after and treasures my family; at work, he’s someone who devotes himself to his work persistently. i respect him as a father, and looking at the back view of a man who lives confidently, there are a lot of things to learn from him. for the first 6 months in the dorm, there were so many things that i couldn’t get used to from my original lifestyle, it was tiring, but the friends who became trainees first taught me many things, and i could get used to it later on. when i got the sense of things, i could do well in terms of singing and dancing, it was like jumping over a wall. also, i felt reassured that i gained friends who did it with me.

originally, i listened to many genres of music. i also liked hip-hop, so i started doing rap. even thought it was my first time rapping, i was unexpectedly natural. i think rap matches me.

in my opinion, the charm of rap is its lyrics. writing about what you think and feel, and expressing it along with a rhythm was very fun. you can feel the charm of it especially when the rap is very natural. using literature as an example, a vocalist’s lyrics would be a poem, a rap would probably be an essay.

Clarification on the Seventeen “N-word” Incident

So firstly, let me say that Gyeongsang-do is a province in South Korea to the south of the country. In the district is both Seungcheol’s birthplace (Daegu) and my birthplace (Changwon; yes, I am Korean) , so the two cities speak very similar dialects. The only difference is that the district of Gyeongsang-do is subdivided into Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. The term buk means north and nam means south, meaning that Gyeongsangbuk-do is to the north of the district and Gyeongsangnam-do is more to the south.

I will admit I am a Seventeen stan, but I’m not here to protect them or make an excuse for or cover up what some of you guys are accusing them of doing. I am merely presenting you with the facts. (Some, not all. I assure you, it is a misunderstanding.)

So let’s just summarise what happened >> in the video <<. Seventeen were at the airport, waiting for their flight to Hong Kong to attend the 2015 MAMA Awards. For fun, they decided to make acrostic poems with the syllables “Ma” and “Ma” for “MAMA”, since it was the event they were going to.

S.Coups distinctly says “Ma, naega.” (마, 내가) I understand that for some non-Korean speakers, that may sound very much like the N-word. When it is not.

Naega means “I am” in Korean. Ma is a dialect-based word, dropping the first syllable of the word “인마” (Inma) or “임마" (Imma) which translates to “Hey (boy)” or an informal way of saying “You”. Despite sometimes (but still very rarely) coming off as rude, “Ma” is so commonly used it isn’t normally considered rude to dialect speakers. Most people say it to people they’re close to and it just breaks the ice a little and keeps the mood comfortable. So in the dialect-speaking districts, it translates more to “Yo” or “Hey” in a more friendly manner.

So he was saying “Hey, I am”. As for the rest of the members who repeated what he was saying and laughing, they seemed to be merely getting excited that he was showing a bit of his background by speaking satoori.

And continuing with his acrostic poem, he adds “Mama-e ganda aiga” which translates to “Going to MAMA.” He was saying that he was going to MAMA.

Why might he say the phrase in this sort of fashion, you ask? He says it as if he’s slightly boasting about going to MAMA. Well, it might be true. Going overseas is a pretty big deal in Korea anyway, and MAMA is a pretty big deal for idols and artists, too. So in a way, he was showing off the fact that he was going to the MAMA awards and was proud of it.

As for Seungkwan, I read a very well-explained description on @jolbyjo ‘s post about it and completely agree with what she said about Seungkwan’s situation, although I disagree with what she said about S.Coups.

Thanks for reading ^^

[TRANS] 160226 10Asia Interview - UP10TION’s Jinhoo

My Name is Jinhoo. It means ‘thick tree’, which translates into “becoming a man with a backbone like a thick tree”. My real name is Kim Jinwook. It’s written as “star (Jin)” and “shine (Wook)”, so it means “Shine like a star!” (laughs) My hometown is Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. VIXX’s N? He was also from Changwon. We didn’t know each other personally at first, but we became close after going for classes at the same academy. Hoya (Infinite) and Kang Dongwon are also from the same hometown.

I wanted to be a singer since elementary school but I didn’t try to audition or anything like that. But one day, an older friend I know auditioned for JYP and got through to the finals. He told me to try out and we went for classes together, but everyone made it through auditions and left the academy. I was the only one left and I thought, “Ah, I should give up now,” but I got chosen then. I was the last one picked but the first one to debut.

It’s interesting to be getting attention after debuting. Whenever I hear the cheers from the stage, I get goosebumps. The members who changed the most from pre-debut are Sunyoul and Hwanhee, and I lost a lot of weight. When our director saw me gain weight, he asked, “I heard he went back to Changwon?” (laughs) So I lost about 10-11kg.

I’m UP10TION’s leader. (Kuhn: I’m the sturdy vice-chairman!) It’s the role of a leader. Since we have 10 members, I won’t be able to control everyone alone, so the company decided to make Kuhn and I the leaders. When I’m talking seriously, Kuhn will tell those who don’t listen, “Follow me!” (laughs) (Kuhn: Jinhoo is like the shepherd who leads the sheep, but sometimes there are stray sheep that leave the herd. My role is to bring everyone together from the side, although there are rarely any stray sheep.) Sometimes there are. (The older members look at the youngest Xiao and Hwanhee) (Xiao: Who, who? / Hwanhee: You mean there are those who stray away!? / Sunyoul: The sheep speaks!) (Everyone bursts out laughing)

In the dorm I’m… (Xiao: He messes up the house!) (Everyone laughs) I’m roommates with Xiao and our room is clean! (Members: You’re saying that our rooms are dirty!? You don’t even come down from the 2nd floor! You’re the 2nd floor poltergeist!) I don’t do much around the dorm. (laughs) I like having my own space, so I stay up on the 2nd floor… At first, the rest said it was too cold so they don’t come up, but after I made the space warm, they keep coming up.

I’m always listening to music. (Gyujin: He wears earphones as though they’re hearing aids.) I like R&B. I love and respect Dean, Taeyang, Jay Park and Moon Myungjin. I do want to follow in their footsteps, and this might be my own greed, but I’m practicing hard to find my own style.

The 3 words that describes Jinhoo are “lips”, “little giant” and “smile”!

Dear Jinhoo, you debuted in September 2015, being in charge of 9 kids. It’s already 2016 and you’ve been busy, but I think you’re doing well. I’m proud of you. Do even better in the future, and let’s make our team shine. I hope you become a leader that leads well.
